Stigmasterol - a plant sterol with several pharmacological activities - is susceptible to oxidation when exposed to air, a process enhanced by heat and humidity. In this context, microencapsulation is a way of preventing oxidation, allowing stigmasterol to be incorporated into various pharmaceutical forms while increasing its absorption. Microparticles were obtained using a blend of polymers of sodium alginate, starch and chitosan as the coating material through a one-stage process using the external gelation technique. Resultant microparticles were spherical, averaging 1.4 mm in size. Encapsu

The use of polymeric matrices in the encapsulation of entomopathogenic fungi ensures the preservation of the inherent characteristics of the fungi, protecting them against external factors. However, depending on the dehydration technique used, the encapsulation capacity of the bioactive compound may be compromised. Thus, an encapsulation matrix in the form of beads of the fungus Beauveria bassiana composed of alginate and bentonite was developed through ionotropic gelation and subjected to different drying techniques. The article reviews current trends in the use of biologically active gel-forming polysaccharides in the food industry, cosmetology and medicine. It is shown that polysaccharides and their derivatives of natural origin have recently acquired important importance for technologies related to human health care. A wide range of possibilities and examples of the application of some of these substances is due to their ability to form stable spatial structures with the participation of water and, as a result, increase viscosity, stabilize dispersions, and form gels. This study focuses on the formulation and characterisation of Capecitabine muco-adhesive beads for the treatment of colorectal cancer. The alginate beads were synthesised using the ionotropic external gelation technique. To maximise encapsulation efficiency and control the release of Capecitabine from the alginate beads, precise formulation conditions were implemented. Results from in vitro dissolution studies revealed that formulations incorporating increasing concentrations of sodium alginate with SCMC released the drug more rapidly compared to those formulated with sodium alginate and HPMC.

Over 85% of human cancers are solid tumors. The effectiveness of anticancer therapy in solid tumors depends on adequate delivery of the therapeutic agent to tumor cells. Inadequate delivery would result in residual tumor cells, which in turn would lead to regrowth of tumors and possibly development of resistant cells. The most prominent option, for now, is the local delivery of chemotherapic drugs into the cavity resection of the tumor. However, the burst release of massive concentrations of the drugs usually boosts the side effects of chemotherapy. Aiming to block the burst release a new drug

Abstract Geothermal energy has emerged as a promising renewable energy source with its continuous availability and independence from weather conditions. However, the development of geothermal wells faces various challenges that limit its widespread adoption. One of these challenges is the decline in the efficiency of geothermal wells over time due to the reduction in permeability and scale formation. Acidizing is a common technique used to enhance productivity of the wells. During the stimulation of these geothermal wells, there is a need to temporarily block the high permeability zones for su

Abstract In this study, we design, fabricate and characterize a novel unimorph-like structure in which a shape memory polymer (SMP) is actuated using a magneto-active elastomer (MAE), resulting in contactless and large deformation shape change. The constituent materials are: a two-part elastomer, iron oxide microparticles, and a rapid cure epoxy. Combining the elastomer with the iron oxide particles results in an MAE actuator, such that application of an external magnetic field induces dipoles in the iron oxide particles, resulting in the actuation of the MAE. Soft robots have exhibited excellent compatibility with functional and physical requirements of intraluminal procedures such as bronchoscopy and cardiovascular intervention [1]. Despite their favourable mechanical compliance and scalable design, integrating miniature force and shape sensors on them is cumbersome [2]. Also, large mechanical deformation of such robots, i.e., flexures, may push traditional rigid sensors out of their linear range [3]. As an alternative approach, the authors have recently introduced a novel soft sensing method and soft embedded sensors for flexures that exhibited l
