Buckwheat herb is known to contain a large amount of rutin. Rutin, the flavonol glycoside quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, is found in many plants. Only few, such as Sophora japonica and even some Eucalyptus species, contain as high amounts as buckwheat leaves. Rutin and even buckwheat herbs are a medicine to influence the permeability of the vessels, thus helping to prevent haemorrhages, ruptures and edema. The review mentions results about the preclinical and clinical studies of buckwheat herb, and even of isolated rutin. The fagopyrism and even a small number of allergy cases are disscused.

Buckwheat grain is a cereal used by people with a gluten allergy. The herb is a relatively new medicinal plant, its use started in the thirties in the USA. Of main importance for its pharmacological activity are the high amounts of rutin (3-10 % of the dried leaf) which is a flavonoid. As well for nutrition as for medicinal application complex knowledge about the complete composition of the different plant parts are of interest. Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) are sources of many bioactive compounds, such as rutin, quercetin, emodin, fagopyrin and other (poly)phenolics. In damaged or milled grain under wet conditions, most of the rutin in common and Tartary buckwheat is degraded to quercetin by rutin-degrading enzymes (e.g., rutinosidase). From Tartary buckwheat varieties with low rutinosidase activity it is possible to prepare foods with high levels of rutin, with the preserved initial levels in the grain. The quercetin from rutin degradation in

AbstractKaryotype analysis and classification of buckwheat chromosomes were performed without chemical banding or staining using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fagopyrum esculentum (common buckwheat) and Fagopyrum tartaricum (Tartarian buckwheat) chromosomes were isolated from root tissues using an enzymatic maceration technique and spread over a glass substrate. Air-dried chromosomes had a surface with ridges, and the height of common and tartary buckwheat were approximately 350 and 150 nm. Volumes of metaphase sets of buckwheat chromosomes were calculated using three-dimensional AFM measurem

In the context of the molecular phylogeny of Polygonaceae, the phylogenetic positions of most genera and their relationships have been resolved. However, the monotypic genus Harpagocarpus has never been included in any published molecular phylogenetic studies. In the present study, we adopt a two-step approach to confirm the phylogenetic placement of Harpagocarpus using two datasets: (1) a concatenated dataset of three chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) regions (matK, rbcL and trnL-F) for Polygonaceae and (2) a combined cpDNA dataset of five sequences (accD, matK, psbA-trnH, rbcL and trnL-F) for Fagopyru

Buckwheat is a pseudo cereal and its cultivation history can be traced back to thousands of years ago in China. Nowadays, buckwheat is a symbol of healthy life because of its rich nutritional and pharmacological properties. In this research, the current suitable areas of 19 wild buckwheat species were analyzed by the MaxEnt model, which proved that southwestern China was the diversity center of buckwheat. Their morphological characteristics and geographical distribution were analyzed. In addition, it was found that the change of buckwheat cultivation in three periods might be related to the Gr

Seven varieties of common buckwheat were tested in field experiments under two levels of nitrogen fertilisation (0 and 50 kg N ha-1) during the period 1998-2000. The objective of the experiments was to evaluate the influence of varieties, fertilisation andyear on the formation of yield components in common buckwheat and to evaluate the relationships between the individual components. As was observed, a compensatory ability exists among the particular yield components. An increase in stand density reduces branching and the number of inflorescences per plant. Plant regeneration by different techniques was evaluated in three buckwheat cultivars: indirect regeneration from cotyledons and hypocotyls, direct regeneration by nodal segment cultivation and induction of multiple shoots from seedling apices. Regenerated shoots were obtained in all procedures. The effects of BA (6-benzylaminopurine), media composition and gelling agent were tested. The regeneration efficiency of shoot apex culture was 2.65–3.33 nodal segments/explant. Cotyledon and hypocotyl segments produced 1.25–2.44 shoots per explant plated.
