The RNA binding protein DAZL (Deleted in Azoospermia) is essential for germ cell survival and subsequent fertility. The transgenic mouse DAZL model has confirmed that knockout (KO) females are infertile as a direct consequence of complete postnatal oocyte ablation. Interestingly, the heterozygous (Het) DAZL females have increased fertility giving rise to significantly more viable offspring, accompanied by significantly reduced plasma FSH and increased inhibin B compared to levels observed in the wildtype (Wt) females. Recent studies to identify putative DAZL mRNA targets suggest that DAZL may

Regulation of reproduction is one central feature of social life. In particular, only a few individuals are in charge of producing offspring in eusocial species. This division of the reproductive labour is mainly mediated by pheromones emitted by the queens in social insects. These queen pheromones may signal the presence of a fertile queen so that workers react accordingly by taking care of her and not reproducing.

Here I investigated two aspects of the reproduction of two polygynous ant species. Hyperprolactinaemia is an important cause of infertility due to the suppression of gonadotrophin release. In seasonal breeders such as the sheep and horse, PRL displays a temporal pattern of secretion. Peak secretion of prolactin (PRL) coincides with the long days of summer in both species, yet whereas the sheep is infertile during the sununer, the horse is fertile. Moreover, in both species, PRL only suppresses the gonadotrophin response to GnRH when applied to pituitary cultures concomitantly with bromocriptine (Br), a dopamine (DA) agonist, during the summer. AQPs are a class of small, hydrophobic, integral membrane proteins that are able to make the cell membrane 10 to 100 fold more permeable than the membranes lacking such channels. Based on studies with AQP1, it appears that AQPs exist in the plasma membrane as homotetramers. Each AQP monomer contains 2 hemi-pores, which fold together to form a water channel. Different aqps have different patterns of glycosylation. In the case of AQP1 the peptide backbone is roughly 28 kDa and the glycosylated forms range from 40 to 60 kDa in mass.
