AbstractElevated estradiol levels associated with ovulation-stimulating drugs used to treat infertility and ovarian punctures involved with in vitro fertilization (IVF) have led to concerns regarding long-term cancer effects. Assessed risks, however, have been contradictory. This may reflect small sample sizes and short follow-up times, as well as an inability of many studies to adjust for appropriate potential confounders, such as causes of infertility and parity. While early studies of ovulation-stimulating drugs suggested large increases in large ovarian cancer risk, more recent studies hav

SummaryUsing a unique set of birth registration data from the Demographic Surveillance System of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, for the period 1974–77, and socioeconomic information collected in the 1974 census, fertility was studied in relation to occupation, size of dwelling, number of cows and number of boats owned. The total fertility rate was found to vary between 6 and 6·5 except in the famine year of 1975. There was no consistent relationship between fertility and education of women. This thesis examines the fertility and women's status in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It reviews the differences in population growth rates among the world's major areas during the 1950-2000 and the fertility characteristics and family policy in Europe. The fertility transition across Europe is highlighted. All European countries have experienced considerable decline of fertility and by the end of the 20th century the rates were far below replacement levels in almost every country. The demographic change and fall in fertility in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in neighbouring states is marked. In so doi

A survey of 967 married women from Misamis Oriental, Philippines was conducted to examine pregnancy as a reproductive experience that may either be status-enhancing or status-degrading. In the study, pregnancy status was defined as a social position located within a set of relationships. The position involved ranking based on its importance to the society. Pregnancy status was said to be derived from the woman’s relationships with significant others as well as self definition. Findings from multivariate analyses indicated that four variables were significantly related to pregnancy status.

Streszczenie:
The overall objective of the current proposal is to develop procedures to improve the pregnancy rate achieved following transfer of fresh or cryopreserved embryos produced in the laboratory into heat-stress recipients. The overall hypothesis is that pregnancy rate in heat-stressed lactating cows can be improved by use of embryo transfer and that additional gains in pregnancy rate can be achieved through development of procedures to cryopreserve embryos, select embryos most likely to establish and maintain pregnancy after transfer, and to enhance embryo competence for post-transfer survival thr

Streszczenie:
The general research objective was to increase herd pregnancy rates by enhancing corpus luteum (CL) function and optimizing follicle development, in order to increase conception rate and embryo survival. The specific objectives were: to determine the effect of the duration of the preovulatory LH surge on CL function; to determine the function of LH during the postovulatory period on CL development; to optimize CL differentiation and follicle development by means of a biodegradable GnRH implant; to test whether optimization of CL development and follicle dynamics in timed- insemination protocol
