Over the last 20 years, Lyme disease has grown to become the most common vector-borne disease affecting Americans. Spread in the eastern U.S. primarily by the bite of Ixodes scapularis, the black-legged tick, the disease affects an estimated 329,000 Americans per year. Originally confined to New England, it has since spread across much of the east coast and has become endemic in Virginia. Since 2010 the state has averaged 1200 cases per year, with 200 annually in the New River Health District (NRHD), the location of our study. Introduction. The role of psychosocial aspects in the onset of the cardiovascular disease is known but, it is not clear which features are more associated with cardiovascular risk and if they can improve the predictive capability of the classic models based on age, sex, smoking, diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol. The study of the association among the risk of an event and the people's characteristics is, generally, conducted using two approaches: i) stochastic data modeling, ii) algorithmic modeling. In the field of epidemiology, we have always preferred the first approach because the r

Studies presented in this dissertation highlight the importance of fungal pathogens in forestry nurseries in South Africa. Both Acacia meamsii seedlings and Eucalyptus hybrid cuttings are shown to be affected by important nursery pathogens. Chapter one presents an evaluation of the potential importance of pathogens to Eucalyptus hedge plants maintained in hydroponics. Hydroponics is a new technology being used in South African forest nurseries, which allows for the rapid establishment of Eucalyptus hedge plants. However, no information is available on pathogens affecting Eucalyptus in hydropon

<p> Butternut (<i>Juglans cinerea</i> L.), or white walnut, has suffered large population declines in the past half-century due to poor regeneration and mortality caused by an introduced fungus, <i>Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum </i> (Nair, Kostichka &amp; Kuntz) Broders &amp; Boland. This fungus causes branch and trunk cankers that can coalesce to girdle adult trees. Chapter 1 provides background information on butternut and butternut canker. We used next-generation sequencing to identify new nuclear DNA markers for butternut and Japanese walnut, a congener with which butternut
