This paper describes the relative frequency of reports of oil and hydraulic fluid fumes in the ventilation supply air (“fume events”) compared to other types of fumes and smoke reported by U.S. airlines over 10 years. The author reviewed and categorized 12,417 fume/smoke reports submitted to the aviation regulator to comply with the primary maintenance reporting regulation (14 CFR § 121.703) from 2002–2011. The most commonly documented category of onboard fumes/smoke was electrical (37%). Combining the categories of “bleed-sourced”, “oil”, and “hydraulic fluid” created the second most prevalent category (26%). The remaining sources of onboard fumes/smoke are also reported. To put the data in context, the fume event reporting regulations are described, along with examples of ways in which certain events are underreported. These data were reported by U.S. airlines, but aviation regulations are harmonized globally, so the data likely also reflect onboard sources of fumes and smoke reported in other countries with equivalent aviation systems. The data provide insight into the relative frequency of the types of reported fumes and smoke on aircraft, which should drive design, operational, and maintenance actions to mitigate onboard exposure. The data also provide insight into how to improve current fume event reporting rules.

In order to achieve the target of controlling SO2 emissions in fumes in a short period of time in China, it is necessary to develop a SO2 on-line monitoring system (CEMS) that is suitable for China. To monitor total emissions of SO2 in fumes, the concentration of SO2 in the fumes and fumes flow rate must be monitored simultaneously. To monitor fumes flow rate, first we must monitor its average flow velocity, this is a major technical problem need to solve in the SO2 CEMS. By means of study on velocity field constant in flue, An advanced method for monitoring average flow velocity of fume by mean of velocity field constant is presented, meanwhile an innovative device has been developed to detect velocity field constants automatically, which has resolved the technical difficulty in automated monitoring of fume average velocity in the flue. Through experiment and testing, the monitoring method researched is correct, structure of detecting device is reasonable, its monitoring results are stable and reliable.

Abstract With the increase in air quality problems derived from the emission of cooking oil fumes, the oil fume purifier was widely installed in household kitchens to eliminate the oil fume. However, because of the great adhesion of the oil, the elimination efficiency of the oil fume purifier goes down and its cleaning difficulty goes up. To solve the problem, four reagents were chosen to fabricate the amphiphobic surface by immersion and chemical vapor deposition. The results showed that the surfaces modified by alcohol reagent, organic fluorine group resin reagent, and heptafluorodecyl trimethoxysilane were only hydrophobic, while perfluorodecanoic acid-modified surface was amphiphobic and its contact angles for water and peanut oil were 138.3° and 125.5° respectively. Therefore, perfluorodecanoic acid could be used to prevent sticking and recycle the condensate of cooking oil fumes on the stainless steel surface of the oil fume purifier.

Herbal fume inhalation is a therapeutic module mentioned in detail in Ayurvedic literature for therapeutic purposes. Different herbal fume inhalation varieties are mentioned in Ayurvedic texts i.e. Dhoom-Nasya (herbal fumes inhaled through the nose), Dhompana (herbal fumes taken through the nose or the mouth and exhaled through the mouth) and Dhoopan (treatment using herbal fumes in total). The present manuscript studied the selected portions of Ayurvedic texts to understand the various therapeutic purposes of Dhoopan described in Ayurveda. All classical Ayurvedic texts mentioned some form of herbal fume inhalation for therapeutics. For example for disease treatment, for health prevention, for mental illness, for fever, for child growth, for diseases of ears, eyes, teeth, etc. Besides therapeutics, dhoopan is also helpful for environmental benefits such as killing bugs, purifying the environment, etc. The study gives perspective and argues ways to identify components mentioned in the Ayurvedic formula especially where some non-herbal meanings were derived from the classic Sanskrit texts; hence opening-up a new dimension of research required for reviving the ancient methods given in Ayurvedic texts.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not differing base metals and filler wires used during welding processes contributed to differing amounts of ultrafine particles (UFP) and nanoparticles being emitted during the welding procedure. The study was also conducted to determine UFP and nanoparticle exposure in the breathing zones of the welders as well as the breathing zones of pipefitters and fire watchers, who commonly sit 6ft behind the welding arc. In order to determine if UFP and NP exposures differed with base metal and filler wire, all welding processes utilized the same welding machine for metal inert gas (MIG), the same wire speed, and the same voltages during each welding process. The only variation in welding procedures were cover gases used, base metals, and filler wires. Measurements gathered during welding procedures were conducted in the breathing zone of the welder and pipefitters consisted of UFP measurements taken by two different condensation particle counters (CPC), which operated in synchrony at the start and cessation of the welding process. NP measurements were taken by a NanoScan Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and were also placed in the breathing zone of the welder. Lastly, particle characterization measurements for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were gathered using a filter attached to a high flow pump, which was placed in the breathing zone of the welder. According to the results, base metal and filler wire do emit differing amounts of NP and UFP during the welding processes. Carbon steel emits the highest amount of nanoparticles, while stainless steel emits the second highest amount, and inconel emits the least. The results also concluded that welders are exposed to a greater concentration of nanoparticles and UFPs than those experienced by pipefitters who stand 6ft from the welding arc.

Les modalités de l'organisation sociale des carnivores solitaires sont mal connues. Le but de cette recherche est d'identifier les mécanismes proximaux responsables de l'adoption et du maintien d'un mode de vie solitaire chez les petits mustélidés avec pour modèle d'étude, le furet (Mustela furo). Afin d'évaluer l'influence du sexe, de l'âge et de la présence de la mère sur le comportement des furets, une étude détaillée de l'évolution ontogénétique des relations interindividuelles au sein de portées a été menée de leur naissance à leur dispersion. L'analyse de leur distribution spatiale au sein de grands enclos a mis en évidence l'absence d'affinités préférentielles aussi bien entre les jeunes qu'entre la mère et ses jeunes mais aussi son rôle de cohésion. Ces observations révèlent une forte tolérance et une absence d'agressivité mais aussi la faiblesse du lien social au sein des portées. L'augmentation de la distance entre les mâles en période de dispersion laisse aussi supposer l'existence d'un déclic ontogénétique. L'étude des capacités de discrimination olfactive des furets a démontré, via un procédé d'habituation-discrimination, que les furets sont capables de discriminer le marquage anal d'un individu familier d'un individu non familier. Cette capacité pourrait notamment être utilisée par les femelles qui préfèrent la proximité de mâles olfactivement familiers en période de reproduction. En effet, l'étude du comportement des furets envers des congénères familiers et non familiers a mis en évidence, qu'après une période d'isolement, les femelles se montrent plus agressives que les mâles à l'égard de congénères non familiers de même sexe. La synthèse de ces travaux montre que l'organisation sociale des petits mustélidés serait dépendante de facteurs phylogénétiques et écologiques, la période d'isolement consécutive à la dispersion se présentant comme une phase clé dans la modification des relations interindividuelles entre l'âge juvénile et l'âge adulte
Social organization modalities of solitary carnivores are not well known. The aim of this study is to identify proximate mechanisms responsible for the adoption and maintenance of a solitary life in small mustelids, using the ferret (Mustela furo) as a model. To assess the influence of sex, age and mother presence on ferret behavior, a detailed study of the ontogenetic evolution of interindividual relationships within litter has been completed from their birth through their dispersion. The analysis of their spatial distribution inside large enclosures demonstrated an absence of preferential affinities between young just as well between mother and young, but also her cohesive role. These observations have revealed a strong tolerance and an absence of aggressiveness but also the weakness of social bond within litters. The increase of distances between males during dispersal period let also suppose the existence of an ontogenetic switch. The study of the olfactory discrimination abilities of ferret by a habituation discrimination procedure has demonstrated that ferrets are able to discriminate the anal odor of a familiar individual from an unfamiliar one. Females who prefer proximity of olfactory familiar male could use this ability during the breeding period. Indeed, the study of ferret behavior towards familiar and unfamiliar conspecifics has demonstrated, after an isolation period, that females are more aggressive than males towards same-sex unfamiliar conspecifics. The synthesis of these experiments shows that the social organization of small mustelids is dependant of phylogenetic and ecological factors, with the isolation period following dispersal being a key phase in the modification of interindividual relationships between juvenile and adult age

Lubricating greases have been widely used for rail lubrication systems. For an efficient grease pump design, it is important to study grease shear viscosity and it is also crucial to analyze grease yielding behavior to determine its consistency on rail surface. Among all rheological properties measured through experiments, yield stress is an ill-defined property, which investigation of a reproducible method for its determination can be invaluable. As the flow properties of a material will be usually influenced by the changes in environment temperature, studying the effects of temperature on the rheological properties of grease are important. In this study, different rheological measurements and visualization techniques, previously developed to study a wide range of materials, have been performed to characterize fumed silica based lubricating greases manufactured by L.B. Foster Rail Technologies Corp. Using commercial rheometers and different approaches to determine the yield points of these materials, it was revealed that the values obtained by curve fitting on steady-state flow curves, creep, amplitude sweep crossover and stress ramp-up were roughly similar. The microstructure of this grease was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) on Cryo and non-Cryo modes. Besides visualizing a new thickener microstructure, it was shown that the heterogeneous structures developed by small fumed silica agglomerates lead to the formation of greases with higher shear viscosities. Finally, thermo-rheological analysis of these samples revealed that these materials follow neither Arrhenius equation nor time-temperature superposition principle.

In the present work, the use of nano silica fume in developing a compressive strength of concrete that can lead to improvement in concrete construction is carried out in the present work. One of the parameters considered is a number of curing days for measuring the compressive strength. The measured results demonstrate the increase in compressive. To achieve our goals, concrete cubes were cast and tested for compressive strength, all concrete sample has the same mixing ratio and sub-classified to standard, and Silica fume added by weight of cement (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%). The results show that the recommended addition was 15% of Silica fumes for optimum compressive strength that reaches 74.8 MPa.

Abstract Thermal spray of Zn, Zn/Al, or Al is extensively used to make anticorrosion coatings on steel structures. Twin arc spray and wire flame spray are the two most practised processes to achieve such coatings. This paper presents measurements of particle emissions generated by these two processes. Sampling and analysis of aerosols generated by both processes have been carried out inside the exhaust ductwork using various instruments: an ELPI impactor, a CNC (Condensation Nucleus Counter), a TEOM microbalance and sampling filters allowing sampling for SEM observations. Electric arc spraying produced much more fumes of ultra fine particles than flame spraying. Aluminum spraying also produces large fume quantities compared to the Zn spraying under the same conditions. The aerosol comprised submicron particles and 95% of the numerical particle size distribution was less than 100 nm. The nanometric nature of the fume particles was confirmed by observations on the SEM. The strong dilution caused by compressed air has the effect of strongly limiting particle coagulation and, in turn, the size of the agglomerated particles. Electric arc spray has taken market share versus wire flame spray for Zn, ZnAl, or Al spraying, but this study shows that it generates much more particle emissions.

Abstract The cold spray deposition of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powder mixed with nano alumina, fumed nano alumina and fumed nano silica was attempted on two different substrates namely polypropylene (PP) and aluminum (Al). Approximately 4mm and 1mm thick coating were observed on Al and PP substrates respectively with UHMWPE and fumed nano alumina mixture. The nano ceramic particles played an important role as a bridge bond between the particles. The coatings with nano alumina, fumed nano alumina and fumed nano silica were very contrasting in terms of coating thickness. Gas temperature and pressure played an important role in the deposition. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results of the coatings showed that UHMWPE was melt crystallized after the coating. The substrate properties also affected the deposition mechanism greatly.

Abstract The increasing use of HVOF (hygh-velocity oxy-fuel) coatings to replace hard chrome plating was initially motivated by the environmental and health risks associated with hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) emissions during the plating process. Following performance optimization and proper coating selection, it has been found that the potential increase in performance and the cost/process-time reduction offered by the HVOF process often justifies its application. Recently, the use of Cr-containing alloys processed by HVOF has drawn attention to the potential release of Cr6+ during heating of metallic chromium. For instance a new California regulation for airborne toxic control measures to reduce emission of hexavalent chromium from thermal spraying is in preparation. The present study focused on monitoring operator exposure during the HVOF spraying of WC-10%Co-4%Cr. The spraying was performed using a JP-5000 HVOF gun in a spray room in which a ventilation flow rate of 10,000 scfm was imposed. Air sampling was taken in the spray room as well as in the adjacent control room in accordance with the NIOSH 7300 and 7600 standard methods. A portable sampler attached on the operator’s chest was also used to monitor the operator exposure during a typical workday. Results indicate that even though metallic fumes of Co and Cr are present in the spray room during spraying, the hexavalent form Cr6+ is not detected. It was concluded that an operator entering the spray room for a limited amount of time with the gun in operation would be exposed to only low fume levels that can still be reduced by wearing an appropriate respiratory mask.

Silica fume (SF) is used as a constituent to formulate cementitious materials for subsurface (oil-well) applications, e.g. by the offshore industry. Using green supplementary pozzolanic materials like silica fume could both improve the material’s performance and the footprint of the sustainable solution. X-ray diffraction and isothermal calorimetry were employed to investigate the evolution of cement paste hydration (water to binder ratio 0.44) after 14 h, 3, 7, and 28 days of curing. Experimental results are presented for both cement pastes made of Class G Portland cement and for a blended paste system where 8% of the Class G cement has been replaced by silica fume. The results indicate beneficial effects of SF on the microstructural development of the slurry.

Welding stainless steel generates hazardous air pollutants. Two technologies were developed to reduce these HAPs. The first, Tetramethylsilane is added to the welding shield gas, and welding proceeds as normal. Reactive oxygen species are consumed and the resulting metal fume particles are encapsulated. In the second technique, new chromium-free welding consumables are introduced nearly eliminating Cr(VI) in the welding fume.

Specialized classes of concrete, such as ultra-high-performance concrete, use volumes of silica fume in concrete that are higher than those in conventional concrete, resulting in increased water demand and mixing difficulty. This study considered the effects of eight different silica fumes in three dosages (10%, 20%, 30%) with three w/b (0.20, 0.30, 0.45) on rheological behavior as characterized by the Herschel-Bulkley model. Results indicated that the specific source of silica fume used, in addition to dosage and w/b, had a significant effect on the rheological behavior. As such, all silica fumes cannot be treated as equivalent or be directly substituted one for another without modification of the mixture proportion. The rheology of cement pastes is significantly affected by the physical properties of silica fume more so than any chemical effects.
