Abstract In 1995, the Japanese manufacturer Shima Seiki introduced the first complete garment knitting machine capable of producing a ready-made flat knitted article under the trade name WholeGarment. Recently, the company also developed a co-design software tool, Ordermade WholeGarment®, for the customisation of knitted fashion garments. Factory Boutique Shima, their retail shop for on-demand production of customised knitted garments, makes it possible for clients to modify a knitted garment according to personal taste in style, colour, pattern and size. At the same time, the Tabu Search algorithm is applied as a local search to improve the quality of the solution found by ACO. The myotonometric measurements of upper limb muscles of garment workers working in a static posture are presented. The workers’ pain intensity was followed on the pain Visual Analogue Scale. The results show that M trapezius and other spine muscles differ at the beginning and the end of the workweek. In hand muscles, the difference is not so significant. The load accumulates in the hands over the years, and the spine and neck get tired more quickly; therefore, there are more complaints of pain in the neck and back. The values of measured stiffness of the muscles was between 156–278 N/m and for

Interacting in the perceptual process by artificial means (augmented perception) involves a) capturing and conveying environmental cues, and b) designing relevant interfaces toward the human receiver. Expanding communication beyond vision and hearing in the visocentric paradigm is valuable for a user living with deafblindness but in the long run also for the many opening up for new informational pathways. Augmented perception, regarded as a process, is highly complex spanning incommensurable domains, mental and material, natural and man-made, active agency and passive. We deconstruct augmented

This paper presents the formulation and application of Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) for the design and optimization of a smart hanger, which simulates the manual handling of garments to facilitate the inspection process. Due to the symmetrical nature of clothes, the hanger is expected to expand only half of the clothes. Thus, a four-link robot consisting of three revolute joints and one prismatic joint is employed to model the hanger. With a Proportional and Derivative (PD) controller, the hanger can regulate the link positions by adjusting the applied torques and force. The object

In higher education of national and international courses, there appear the designation Fashion Design, Fashion Technology, and the techniques of pattern making and garment manufacturing which are not always associated in the same curricular unit. The practical skills associated with these two techniques are complementary in fashion product development; but the separation or the failure of interaction between them in the past, contributed to the deficiencies in the validation of the fashion product in the learning phase and in many cases, they present deficiencies in the transfer of knowledge

Labour abuse in the garment industry has been widely reported. This qualitative research explores the lived experiences in communities with bonded labour in Tamil Nadu, India. We conducted a qualitative expert-led analysis of 301 life stories of mostly women and girls. We also explore the differences and similarities between qualitative expert-led and participatory narrative analyses of life stories of people living near to and working in the spinning mills. Our findings show that the young female workforce, many of whom entered the workforce as children, are seen and treated as belonging – bo

This study analyses the impacts of COVID-19 on the lives and livelihoods of workers in the garment, textile and footwear manufacturing in Cambodia, a sector which employed approximately 800,000 people (80 percent of whom were female) and contributed about 70 percent to the country’s annual total export value prior to the pandemic. The analysis examines potential disproportionate effects of the pandemic on women and men, focusing on earnings, consumption and remittances, possible conflicts at home and workplace, mental health, coping strategies and receipts of in-cash and in-kind assistance fro
