Experimental data are shown for survival of fossilized diatoms undergoing shocks in the GPa range. The results were obtained from hypervelocity impact experiments which fired fossilized diatoms frozen in ice into water targets. After the shots, the material recovered from the target water was inspected for diatom fossils. Nine shots were carried out, at speeds from 0.388 to 5.34 km s −1 , corresponding to mean peak pressures of 0.2–19 GPa. In all cases, fragmented fossilized diatoms were recovered, but both the mean and the maximum fragment size decreased with increasing impact speed and hence

Starch is arranged in a crystalline manner within its storage granules and should thus give sharp X-ray diagrams. Unfortunately most of the common starch granules have sizes between 1 and 100μm, making them too small for an X-ray study on individual grains. There is only one instance where an oriented X-ray diagram could be obtained on one sector of an individual giant starch granule. Despite their small size, starch granules are still too thick to be studied by electron diffraction with a transmission electron microscope. The only reported study on starch ultrastructure using electron diffrac

Abstract A new interstellar molecule, FeC (X 3Δ i ), has been identified in the circumstellar envelope of the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch star IRC+10216. FeC is the second iron-bearing species conclusively observed in the interstellar medium, in addition to FeCN, also found in IRC+10216. The J = 4 → 3, 5 → 4, and 6 → 5 rotational transitions of this free radical near 160, 201, and 241 GHz, respectively, were detected in the lowest spin–orbit ladder, Ω = 3, using the Submillimeter Telescope of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) for the 1 mm lines and the ARO 12 m at 2 mm. The non-bonded interactions between a porphyrin molecule and a C 60 molecule, in the gas-phase, has been systematically investigated using various theoretical models. These are: (1) wavefunction-based methods, Hartree-Fock SCF (HF), second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) theory, and the localized MP2 (LMP2) theory using the diatomics in molecules (DIM-LMP2) and triatomics in molecules (TRIM-LMP2) methods; (2) density functional theory (DFT), using non-local (BLYP, PW91), hybrid (B3LYP), and local (SVWN) functionals. The purpose of this study Part II-12 months is to evaluate titanium (Ti) and vitallium (Vi, an alloy composed of Co, Cr, Ni, and Fe) endodontic endosseous implants (EEI) and the tissue surrounding them, one year after insertion. In humans this type of implant is sometimes used to stabilize compromised teeth. An adult primate model was employed using comparable techniques during implantation. Various clinical and research methodologies were used to investigate EEI and adjacent tissue in subapical bone of the maxillae

From a synthesis of recent oceanic observations and paleo-data it is evident that certain species of giant diatoms including Rhizosolenia spp. Thalassiothrix spp. and Ethmodiscus rex may become concentrated at oceanic frontal zones and subsequently form episodes of mass flux to the sediment. Within the nutrient bearing waters advecting towards frontal boundaries, these species are generally not dominant, but they appear selectively segregated at fronts, and thus may dominate the export flux. The Southern Ocean, the ocean encircling Antarctica, has been described by explorers as cold, empty, and dangerous. Despite this, it is a paradise for tiny algae called diatoms that are crucial players in the regulation of our climate. Why are these tiny organisms so happy in this cold and far away ocean? Diatoms have a solid shell made of a glass-like material called silica, so they need to find silicon in surface waters to build it. The Southern Ocean is the perfect place for diatoms because it is full of silicon compared to the other oceans. This is due to a special phenomenon called the si
