In this thesis I explore the effect of parameter uncertainty in ocean biogeochemical models on the calculation of carbon uptake by the ocean. The ocean currently absorbs around a quarter of the annual anthropogenic CO2 emissions to the atmosphere [Scholes et al., 2009], slowing the increase in radiative forcing associated with the increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration. Ocean biogeochemical models have been developed to study the role of the ocean ecosystem in this process. Such models consist of a greatly simplified representation of the hugely complex ocean ecosystem. This simplification r

This dissertation presents experiments with the UVic Earth System Climate Model that explore the sensitivity of global climate simulations to an increase of horizontal resolution into the ocean eddy-permitting range. Model versions, with resolutions ranging from 1.8' (latitude) x3.6' (longitude) to 0.2'x0,4'. are evaluated in control states and in response to climate perturbations. The effect of resolution on ocean volume transport, ocean heat transport, water mass formation, and sea ice distribu¬tion are investigated within the framework of three foci: 1) the Atlantic meridional overturning c

abstract: The numerical climate models have provided scientists, policy makers and the general public, crucial information for climate projections since mid-20th century. An international effort to compare and validate the simulations of all major climate models is organized by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), which has gone through several phases since 1995 with CMIP5 being the state of the art. In parallel, an organized effort to consolidate all observational data in the past century culminates in the creation of several "reanalysis" datasets that are considered the closest

In order to study the impact of global runoff, sensitivity experiment (NoRiv) was carried out by shutting down the entire runoff into the ocean for a period of 200 years. The changes in NoRiv, compared to the reference simulation (CR), shows the impact of global runoff (NoRiv minus CR). The evolution of mean ocean SSS in the major ocean basins show that the upper– ocean reached a quasi-stabilized stage in the first 100 years in the NoRiv. Globally, when there is no runoff, the surface ocean turns saltier with the largest increase occurring off the mouths of major river systems. High sali

River discharge can affect ocean surface temperature by altering stratification within the oceanic mixed layer. A hitherto unexplored aspect of present climate is the feedback of river runoff onto climate. This thesis presents an investigation of the impact of global river runoff on oceans and climate using a fully coupled global climate model, Community Climate System Model (CCSM). Two model simulations for a period of 100 years have been carried out: 1) a reference run (CTRL) that incorporates all the features of a global coupled model with river runoff into the ocean embedded in it, and 2)

According to the "Out-of-Africa 2" theory of human evolution all living humans today descend from a group of Anatomically Modern Homo sapiens or Anatomically Modem Humans that evolved in Africa 200,000 years ago and subsequently migrated out of Africa and spread into the rest of the World around 100,000 years. As a result an interest has developed in establishing a concrete theory of the factors that compelled and/or motivated our ancestors to venture out of their African origins at this time. Interestingly, the Earth's Last Glacial Cycle also dates from this period--stretching from 115,000 to

<p>Methane (CH4) is the second most powerful greenhouse gas (GHG) behind carbon dioxide (CO2), and is able to trap a large amount of long-wave radiation, leading to surface warming. Carbon monoxide (CO) plays an important role in controlling the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere by reacting with OH radicals that affect atmospheric CH4 dynamics. Terrestrial ecosystems play an important role in determining the amount of these gases into the atmosphere. However, global quantifications of CH4 emissions from wetlands and its sinks from uplands, and CO
