Many polymorphic genes that code enzymes involved in carcinogen biotransformation have been reported to be associated with development of cancer. GSTT1, GSTM1 genes that code phase II enzyme belongs to the glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) family and seems relevant for the susceptibility to oral diseases as it detoxify carcinogenic tobacco smoke to its excretal form. The aim of our study was to determine the association of GSTT1, GSTM1non null/null polymorphisms with the plasma level of GR, GSH and GST and susceptibility in pre oral cancer and oral cancer in North Indian population. ABSTRACT Background: Genetic polymorphisms are common and contribute significantly to human illnesses. Aim: This study was carried out to evaluate the importance of genetic variations in the genes expressing cancer-metabolizing enzymes (CYP1A1 and GSTM1) in individuals experiencing oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF). Methods and Materials: Based on the clinical and histological characteristics of OSMF, 40 patients were chosen for the study; 10 of these patients had considerable polymorphism and malignant transformation; therefore, they were placed in a different group. Carcinogenesis is a multistep process and individual risk to development of cancer depends not only on environmental factors or extrinsic exposure to carcinogens but also on genetic susceptibility of an individual. In head and neck cancer, tobacco exposure and alcohol consumption are predominantly the most significant external factors for tumor formation. Individual’s susceptibility to cancer may be partly explained by variability in enzymatic activities of metabolic genes. Mutations in genes concerned with production of enzymes for metabolism of tobacco products may lead to increased risk of

The transformation of ovarian surface epithelial cells, stromal cells, sex cord, or germ cells initiates ovarian malignancy. Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is clinically silent with vague, non-specific symptomatology and is generally diagnosed at an advanced stage, resulting in a high mortality rate. The known main etiological factors are: age at menarche and menopause (early menarche or late menopause), use of oral contraception (estrogen and/or progesterone), family history, genetic factors, inflammation, occupational and environmental exposure.
