The cohort of patients with oral malignancy is typically of advanced age with significant comorbidity. The causative factors for such malignancies, such as tobacco and alcohol, are also those which result in cardiovascular disease. As a result patients undergoing ablative and reconstructive surgery, with free tissue transfer, are at considerable risk of peri-operative morbidity and mortality from both primary and secondary disease. Free flap failure has a significant impact upon patient outcome, with resultant delayed discharge, and increased morbidity and mortality. By optimising co-morbidity

Carcinoma growth requires a supportive tumor stroma. The concept of reciprocal interactions between tumor and stromal cells has become widely acknowledged and the connective tissue activation seen in the malignant process has been likened to that of a healing wound. Little is, however, known about the specific characteristics of these interactions, distinguishing them from the interplay occurring between epithelial and stromal cells in wound healing. In order to study differences in the humoral effects of malignant and benign epithelial cells on fibroblasts, we used an in vitro coculture model

One of the most widely studied MMPs is MMP-8. MMP-8 was previously thought to be expressed only by neutrophils. Presently, it is evide

The main role of these reflexes is to stabilize the head either in space or relative to the trunk, respectively. The VCR stabilises the head in space while the CCR tends to re-align the head on the trunk. These two reflexes can work synergistically or an-tagonistically according to context and movement go
