In the modern industrialized countries every year several hundred thousands of people die due to the sudden cardiac death. The individual risk for this sudden cardiac death cannot be defined precisely by common available, non-invasive diagnostic tools like Holter-monitoring, highly amplified ECG and traditional linear analysis of heart rate variability (HRV). Therefore, we apply some rather unconventional methods of nonlinear dynamics to analyse the HRV. Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variations in time between consecutive heart beats, and reflects the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Not only is HRV a good marker for many physiological disorders, but it is well known that HRV can be altered consciously by different approaches even though it is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Respiration is an important factor in modulating HRV and this property is utilized in HRV biofeedback, which is a method that aims at increasing heart rate variability.
