RésumésLes publications et les programmes de recherche qui portent sur l’histoire des archives, de leurs acteurs, de leurs méthodes et de leur signification sociale, politique et culturelle se sont beaucoup multipliés ces dernières années. Ces préoccupations posent à nouveau la question de la pertinence du couple formé par les archives et l’histoire depuis au moins l’époque moderne. Deux mouvements, qualifiés de « tournants » semblent en réalité se développer sans toujours se rencontrer : le « tournant archivistique », qui serait plutôt le fait du monde des archivistes (et des anthropologues), et le « tournant documentaire » des chercheurs historiens qui ne considèrent plus seulement les pièces et les fonds d’archives comme des matériaux, mais comme des objets historiques à part entière, producteurs de sens social, politique ou culturel. L’archivistique, entendue au sens très large, revendique parfois une rupture avec la science historique pour gagner une véritable reconnaissance académique dans le paysage contemporain des sciences sociales, tandis que le « tournant documentaire », essentiellement européen, porte plus volontiers sur les époques médiévales et modernes. L’analyse de la production récente développée dans ces deux directions conduit à souhaiter leur mutuelle hybridation et, plus spécialement pour les historiens, à approfondir une contextualisation et une historicisation des fondements archivistiques sur lesquels repose une partie de nos connaissances historiques.

La présente thèse se propose de mettre en valeur le développement d’une archivistique chinoise moderne et de l’usage social des archives depuis le milieu du XXe siècle, à la lumière de l’évolution de l’État et de la société. La thèse comporte cinq chapitres. Le premier est un rappel de l’histoire politique de la Chine et de son impact socioculturel sur les archives et le métier d’archiviste. Le deuxième présente l’évolution de l’archivistique chinoise, afin d’expliquer le contexte dans lequel s'établissent la communication et la valorisation des archives. Le troisième traite des origines et de la formation de la législation archivistique en Chine à l'époque contemporaine : législation archivistique générale et spécifique, se rapportant à la communication. Il s’agit d’une base essentielle dans le domaine de la communication des archives. Le quatrième chapitre présente une étude des politiques de communication des archives en Chine et donne des éléments de comparaison avec la situation en France, allant jusqu’au fonctionnement des salles de lecture – lieux où les archivistes et leurs « clients » se rencontrent et où s’appliquent les textes législatifs et réglementaires. Le dernier chapitre aborde le problème des relations entre les archivistes et le public, qui s’établissent et se développent notamment dans le cadre d'activités culturelles, principaux moyens de valorisation des archives conservées : publications, expositions, sur site et en ligne
This thesis proposes to develop a modern Chinese archival science and the social use of archives since the mid-twentieth century in the light of the evolution of the state and society value. It is composed of five parts: First of all, we are going to take a historical review with its impact on the archives and the profession of archives in a socio-cultural aspect. Second of all, we’ll look back into the evolution of the archives in China so as to make clearer the context in which the communication and the valorization of the archives have been established. In the third part are explained the origin and the development of the archival legislation in China, from the Qing dynasty till nowadays. Here we’ll consider the legislation of archives in general and the one who concerns more specifically the communication of archives. It’s the basis that is essential to the communication of archives. The forth part presents a comparative study of Chinese politic about the archives communication comparing with that of France, as well as the organization of the lecture rooms— locations where the archivists and their “customers” get in touch with each other directly, are also where confront usually some contradictions. In the last part, we’ll examine the relations between the archivists and its public, which are generally recognized, particularly when it comes to cultural activities, as important means to promote the archives conserved, including the publication, the on-site and virtual exhibitions

Le sujet de la these implique une recherche qui se situe a la jonction de deux domaines qu'il a fallu definir : celui de "l'oeuvre grammaticale" de f. Brunot, (1860-1938), et celui des documents deposes a l'institut de france qui constituent depuis 1985 le fonds brunot. L'"oeuvre grammaticale", designe a la fois les objets crees en ce domaine par f. Brunot - rendus publics par leur publication - et les operations d'ordre cognitif ou strategique, qui l'ont conduit a construire ces objets : le precis de grammaire historique en 1887 - elabore par un jeune normalien erudit qui ose traiter la langue francaise hors de ses origines latines -, la methode de langue francaise en collaboration avec m. Bony leguee a l'enseignement primaire en 1909, la realisation magistrale de la pensee et la langue publiee en 1922; la sanction de l'academie francaise par les observations clot cette production, en 1932. Entre ces travaux d'autres occurences ponctuent, dans les archives, la demarche de f. Brunot liee a sa conception de la langue francaise et a son desir de la voir prise en consideration dans des structures d'apprentissage modernes : sa participation aux projets de reforme de l'agregation de grammaire et de l'orthographe, sa creation des archives de la parole, son enseignement a l'alliance francaise qui lui permet de fonder l'ecole pour les professeurs de francais a l'etranger, ses voyages associes a l'implantation de la langue francaise hors de ses frontieres. Chacun de ces evenements reunit au fonds brunot des ensembles de documents qui les definissent, par leur origine socio-professionnelle, politique, geographique etc. , permettant de preciser, puis de suivre la progression de la pensee "grammaticale" de f. Brunot dans son champ universitaire contemporain. Le dernier chapitre consacre au souvenir de f. Brunot, montre une institution universitaire qui faconne a sa convenance la memoire officielle de son ressortissant
The thesis subject means a research work situated at the boarder between two fields that had to be definited : the scope of the "oeuvre grammaticale" by f. Brunot (1860-1938) and the range of documents left at the institut de france and built up in 1985 as a separate brunot collection (fonds brunot). The "oeuvre grammaticale" describes both the objects created by f. Brunot in this field - open to the public audience through their publication - and the various cognitive or strategic processes which lead f. Brunot to put together these objects : the precis de grammaire historique - elaborated in 1887 by an erudite and young holder of the diploma of the ecole normale superieure, who then dared to deal with the french language out of its latin roots-, the methode de langue francaise drafted in collaboration with mr. Bony and inherited by the french primary education system in 1909, la pensee et la langue, this brilliant work published in 1922; his sanction of the academie francaise in the observations ended this production in 1932. In between these works, various occurences phase here and there f. Brunot's approach of his concept of the french language and his wish to have his processes considered in modern teaching structures : his participation in reform projects of the 'agregation' (highest competitive examination for teachers in france) of grammar and spelling, his creation of the 'archives de la parole', his teaching activity at the alliance francaise that allowed him to found the 'school of the french teachers abroad', his travels associated with the establishment of the french language out of its boarders. The whole of these occurences are collected in the fonds brunot and are specified according to their social-professional, political and geographical origins eg. , thus making it possible to trace the progress of the grammar thought of f. Brunot in his contemporary university domain. The last chapter devoted to the memory of f. Brunot shows an academic institution modelling the official memory of its member to suit its convenience

Pendant plusieurs siècles, le Yémen n’a pas porté d’intérêt institutionnel à ses archives, étant isolé du monde extérieur à cause de l’occupation ottomane au nord du pays et de l’occupation britannique au sud. Depuis la révolution de 1962, le besoin de disposer d’archives bien organisées et accessibles est apparu et la création du Centre National des Archives en 1991 a permis d’améliorer considérablement la situation. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier l’intérêt que l’État yéménite a porté au patrimoine archivistique. Elle rappelle l’histoire et le développement de l’archivage dans les ministères et les institutions gouvernementales yéménites depuis la révolution de 1962 jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Elle présente la création des Archives nationales, avec l’aide de partenaires internationaux notamment l’UNESCO et l’ICA, la direction des archives de France et les Archives nationales de Tunisie. Elle explore aussi la façon dont les nouvelles technologies appliquées aux archives permettent aux chercheurs et aux citoyens d’y accéder. Elle présente l’organisation des archives courantes et intermédiaires dans les institutions qui s’est imposée comme un concept et une pratique depuis la création du Centre National des Archives. C’est autour de ses activités et de ses applications qu’ont été élaborées l’observation, l’enquête, la réflexion et certaines propositions. Les problématiques de la thèse s’articulent autour de cinq points : - L’histoire et l’organisation administrative du Yémen- La tradition archivistique au Yémen avant la réunification de 1990- Les origines et le développement du Centre national des archives (CNA)- Les missions, le fonctionnement et l’évaluation du CNA (de 1994 à aujourd’hui)- La fonction archives chez les producteurs (institutions gouvernementales)Les événements survenus au Yémen depuis 2011 ont malheureusement remis en cause toutes ces avancées. Ils ont tari les principales sources de financement de l’État et détruit une partie des fonds et des bâtiments, entraînant une paralysie complète du CNA
For centuries, Yemeni institutions have not shown particular interest in their archives. The country was isolated from the outside world by British colonization in the South and the Ottoman occupation in the North. After the 1962 revolution, however, the need for organized and accessible archives has developed. This led to the creation in 1991 of the National Archives Centre (CNA). The Centre has improved the situation.This thesis aims at studying the interest shown by the Yemeni State in archival heritage. It starts with the history and the development of archives management in the ministries and governmental institutions of Yemen from the 1962 revolution to the current situation.It sheds light on the creation of the National Archives in Yemen and its international partnership with such institutions as UNESCO, ICA, French Directorate of Archives and Tunisian National Archives. It investigates the way new technologies are implemented in order to enable researchers and citizens to access to archives in a country such as Yemen. Moreover, it sheds light on the records management inside the Yemeni institutions. This practical has been commonly implemented since the creation of the National Archives Centre. This Centre has been the focus of this research. Suggestions are given for the development of its activities.Therefore, this thesis main topics are:- the history and administrative organization of Yemen ;- the archival practice and legacy in Yemen until the country’s reunification in 1990 ;- the origins and subsequent development of the National Archives Centre (CNA) ;- the CNA’s goals, functioning and assessment of its activities from 1994 up to nowadays ;- the archival functions in the producing governmental institutions.Events unfolding in Yemen since 2011 have challenged all these advances. The war did not only exhaust State’s funding. Warlike operations have also destroyed holdings and buildings, bringing the CNA to complete paralysis. This dissertation is concluded by an assessment of the archives current situation in Yemen
ملخصلعدة قرون، لم يكن لدى اليمن أي مؤسسة أرشيفية، لأنها معزولة عن العالم الخارجي بسبب الاحتلال في شمال البلاد والاحتلال البريطاني في الجنوب. منذ ثورة 1962 ظهرت الحاجة إلى أرشيفات منظمة تنظيماً جيداً وسهل الوصول إليها، وقد أدى إنشاء المركز الوطني للوثائق (المركز الوطني للأرشيف) عام 1991 إلى تحسين الوضع إلى حد كبير.الهدف من هذه الرسالة هو دراسة اهتمام الدولة اليمنية للتراث الوثائقي والأرشيفي، وتشير الرسالة إلى تاريخ وتطور التوثيق والارشفة في الوزارات والمؤسسات الحكومية اليمنية منذ الثورة من عام 1962 وحتى اليوم. وكذلك تقدم إنشاء المركز الوطني للوثائق بمساعدة الشركاء الدوليين بما في ذلك اليونسكو والمجلس الدولي للأرشيف، إدارة الارشيف الفرنسي والأرشيف الوطني التونسي. وتدرس مدى تطبيق التكنولوجيا الجديدة على الارشيفات التي تمكن الباحثين والموطنين من الوصول إليها. وتعرض تنظيم الارشيف الجاري والوسيط في الوزارات والمؤسسات الحكومية التي ظهرت كمفهوم وممارسة منذ إنشاء المركز الوطني للوثائق. وحول نشاطاتها وتطبيقاتها التي وضعت للمراقبة والمسوحات الوثائقية والرؤية وبعض المقترحات لتنظيم الارشيف الجاري والوسيط. وتستند مشاكل ألأطروحة حول خمس نقاط : - التاريخ التنظيمي للإدارة ونشأت الارشيف في اليمن.- التقاليد الأرشيفية في اليمن قبل الوحدة عام 1990.- تأسيس وتطوير المركز الوطني للوثائق (cna).- مهام ونشاطات وتقييم المركز الوطني للوثائق (من 1994 إلى اليوم).- وظيفة الأرشيف لدى المنتجين للوثائق (المؤسسات الحكومية).وللأسف بأن الاحداث التي وقعت في اليمن منذ عام 2011 غيرت كل هذه التطورات في مجال الارشيف. لهذا جفت وقلت المصادر التمويل الحكومية وكذلك تدمير جزء من مبنى المركز وجزء من الرصيد الوثائقي فروع المركز بعدن وحضرموت وبعض ارشيفات الجهات والوزارات الحكومية، مما أدى الى شلل كامل للمركز الوطني للوثائق.الكلمات المفتاحية اليمن – الأرشيف – محفوظات – إدارة السجلات - تثمين - تشريعات الارشيف – تشريع المحفوظات - لوائح الارشيف - الارشيف العسكري – الأرشيف الجاري – الأرشيف الوسيط – الأرشيف التاريخي - المحفوظات الجارية - المحفوظات الوسيطة - المحفوظات التاريخية - - المركز الوطني للوثائق

La thèse présente l’édition de 35 papyrus du IIIe s. Av. J. C, conservés à l’Institut de Papyrologie de la Sorbonne. Provenant de cartonnages de momies, ils ont exigé tout un travail préalable de nettoyage et de raccord. Il s’agit en majorité de plaintes au roi ou enteuxeis, et de courriers administratifs judiciaires entre différents fonctionnaires locaux : Diophanès, le stratège (responsable régional), Dèmètrios, l’épistate (juge local) de Mouchis, et Glaukos, le phylacite (gendarme), ces ceux derniers n’étant connus que par les textes de ce lot. Les plaintes au roi évoquent des litiges sur des terrains, des vols et des violences, ou l’insatisfaction des plaignants quant à une procédure judiciaire antérieure. Les documents administratifs témoignent de certaines de ces procédures (convocations, témoignages). On n’a pas négligé les problèmes de chronologie (dus à la juxtaposition de deux calendriers) ou ceux que posent l’identification des mains et l’archivage antique du dossier
The thesis presents the edition of 35 papyri from the 3rd century B. C. , belonging to the Institute of Papyrology in the Sorbonne. Coming from mummy cartonnage, they required at first to be cleaned and joined. Most of these documents are petitions to the king, or enteuxeis, and letters between various local officials : the strategos (regional chief) Diophanes, the epistates (local judge) of Mouchis Demetrios and the phylacites (policeman) Glaukos, the later two being known only in this group of texts. The petitions to the king evoke dispute about land, stealing and abuse, or plaintiff’s dissatisfaction about former legal procedure. Administrative texts describe some of these legal procedures (summons, witnesses). We did not neglect chronological problems (due to the simultaneous use of two calendars), the study of the scripts and of filing such legal archives

L’axe principal de ce travail de thèse est de s’intéresser à ce projet visuel dans l’œuvre d’Albert Kahn et d’ouvrir le champ en s’intéressant aux devenirs des films des Archives de la Planète. Pour cela, la thèse s’appuie sur la totalité des archives administratives du Musée Albert Kahn, sur les archives d’Albert Kahn et sur ses nombreux proches, sur les archives départementales et nationales ou encore à travers des enquêtes menés dans les archives de l’INA, des centres d’art et les archives du film. En s’intéressant, dans un premier temps, à la figure kahnienne à travers la construction des discours contemporains ou posthumes de Kahn, la thèse s’oriente dans un deuxième temps vers une analyse du projet visuel kahnien. En s’appuyant sur des penseurs contemporains de Kahn et sur certains de ses écrits, ce deuxième temps tente de comprendre comment les Archives de la Planète sont rendues possibles et en quoi elles s’inscrivent dans une pensée de l’image à la fois globale et spécifique. Enfin, la troisième partie de ce travail explore, premièrement, la « mise en disponibilités » des films des Archives de la Planète en partant de la mort d’Albert Kahn jusqu’au début des années 2000 en s’appuyant sur l’histoire de l’institution muséale et sur ses satellites – comme la « Cinémathèque de Boulogne ». Le deuxième temps de la troisième partie ouvre la réflexion en se concentrant sur les devenirs des Archives de la Planète à travers des études de cas d’appropriations des films kahniens dans des productions extérieures (Chris Marker, Abel Gance, Nicole Vedrès, Frédéric Rossif etc.) et à la télévision
The main approach of this PhD is to focus on the visual project within Albert Kahn’s work and to broaden the scope by studying what will become of the films from the Archives of the Planet. To achieve this goal, the thesis draws on the whole administrative archives of the Albert Kahn Museum, on the archives of Albert Kahn and his numerous relatives, on the departmental and national archives and through investigations conducted in the archives of the INA (the National Institute for Audio-visual Media), art centres and the film’s archives. By first looking at the kahnian figure through the construction of Kahn’s contemporary and posthumous speeches, the thesis then takes a turn towards an analysis of the kahnian visual project. As it draws on thinkers contemporary to Kahn and on some of his writings, this second part attempts to grasp how the Archives of the Planet have been made possible and how they are embedded in a thinking, both global and specific, on images. Finally, the third part of this work first delves into the period when the films of the Archives of the Planet were “made available” from Albert Kahn’s death to the early 2000s, by drawing on the history of the museal institution and its satellites – such as the “Cinémathèque de Boulogne.” The third part then opens up the reflection by focusing on the futures of the Archives of the Planet and, by studying cases of appropriation of the kahnian films in external productions (Chris Marker, Abel Gance, Nicole Vedrès, Frédéric Rossif etc.) and on television

AbstractDionne Brand’s The Blue Clerk: Ars Poetica in 59 Versos (2018) is an exquisite address to the problem of the colonial archive and the challenges it poses to literature. Brand has long engaged this issue in her writing, and in her recent work of poetry she structures her interrogation with two figures, the “author” and the “clerk.” The author and clerk sometimes spar and sometimes mirror one another in their ongoing arguments and conversations about the poet’s writing and the clerk’s duty to the unwritten record of what is left out of the archive. The structuring debate between the clerk, the archivist and keeper of bales of paper, and the author, the keeper of memory and experience, addresses the fact that in a Caribbean context, archival records are not so much historical evidence as they are remains and ruins of histories untold. Remnants, ruins, and wrecks, colonial archives entice artists and writers to do counter-archival work that dives into the wreck, that does the work Brand does in The Blue Clerk, of what I call in this chapter, wreckognition.

In her book Decolonising Solidarity: Dilemmas and Directions for Supporters of Indigenous Struggles, Clare Land suggest how non-Indigenous people might develop new frameworks supporting Indigenous struggles. Land argues research is deeply implicated with processes of colonisation and the appropriation of indigenous knowledge. Given that architectural archives are central to the research of architectural history, how might these archives be decolonised? This paper employs two disparate archives to develop a framework of how architectural archivists might begin to decolonise these archives. Firstly, these archives are the Grounds Romberg and Boyd Archive (GRB) at the State Library of Victoria (SLV). Secondly, the Greg Burgess Archive is now located at Avington, Sidonia in Victoria. The materials from each of these archives will be discussed in relation to two frameworks. These are the Tandanya-Adelaide Declaration endorsed by The Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and the Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) framework developed by Janke (2019). These archival frameworks suggest how interconnected architectural histories and historiographies might be read, reframed and restored. Decolonising architectural archives will require a continuous process of reflection and political engagement with collections and archives. In pursuing these actions, archivists and architectural historians can begin to participate in the indigenous Reworlding of the archive.

This paper discusses Black Bottom Street View, an immersive representation of an historic African American neighborhood in Detroit that was destroyed during Urban Renewal. The exhibit recreates Black Bottom’s street grid and envelops visitors within panoramic views constructed from stitched archival photographs of the neighborhood. The exhibit’s light- weight, tensile, and flat-packed structures allow the project to be deployed across the city and region. In spatializing the photographs, Black Bottom Street View transforms the archive from a stack of disconnected snapshots into a shifting but cohesive whole: a public spectacle, a transient monument, a social platform for connection with the archive. Black Bottom Street View also helps to augment the city’s fragmented, incomplete record of Black Bottom by working with a local organization, Black Bottom Archives, to collect, preserve, and provide digital access to oral histories that tell the story of Black Bottom from the perspective of its former residents. Through collaborative means, the Black Bottom Street View exhibit visualizes, spatializes and mobilizes a city archive in order to amplify ongoing efforts to preserve Black Bottom’s history and help connect its legacy with the present.

Les granites peralumineux sont reconnus à l'échelle mondiale comme le produit magmatique final des cratons archéens. Cependant, leur durée, les conditions thermiques de leur mise en place, leur séquence de cristallisation, ainsi que les liens avec l'évolution tectonométamorphique des roches encaissantes et les systèmes minéralisés en métaux précieux, de base, et rares sont peu connus. Le Batholite de Decelles (c. 2670-2620 Ma) exposé dans le sud-est du craton du Supérieur au Québec, Canada est l'un des plus volumineux de la région, offrant une opportunité unique dmp;gt;'améliorer notre compréhension des conditions thermiques et de la mobilité des magmas et des fluides dans la croûte moyenne et supérieure. Nous présentons des nouvelles datations Lu-Hf et des cartes dmp;gt;'éléments traces sur grenat de trois échantillons de granite du Batholite de Decelles. Les nouvelles dates de 2668 ± 4 Ma, 2663 ± 5 Ma, 2656 ± 7 Ma sont indifférenciables (considérant les incertitudes) des dates Lu-Hf sur grenat et U-Pb sur monazite des unités métasédimentaires encaissantes. La cartographie des éléments traces in situ par LA-ICP-MS révèle une zonation compositionnelle systématique. Les grenats présentent un cur avec une zonation oscillatoire concentrique en Li, P, Sc, Ti, Y, Zr, REE, Hf, Th et U; et une surcroissance marquée par des concentrations relativement élevées en MREE, HREE et V, et de faibles concentrations en Li, Ti, P, Sm, Zr, Hf et U par rapport aux curs. Les résultats indiquent une origine magmatique des grenats par opposition aux grenats métamorphiques de la source avec une histoire de cristallisation complexe. Le contenu en éléments traces du grenat semble être contrôlé par des variations cinétiques de croissance et de diffusion à l'interface grenat-matrice, ainsi que par la cristallisation de phases majeures et accessoires telles que la muscovite, la monazite, l'apatite et le zircon. Dans l'ensemble, le grenat du Batholite de Decelles date le début de la cristallisation magmatique et son contenu en éléments traces enregistre son histoire complète. Les archives géochronologiques régionales indiquent une évolution commune des niveaux de croûte moyenne et supérieure avec un refroidissement progressif entre c. 2640 et c. 2620 Ma, associé à la migration et au refroidissement de fluides minéralisateurs.

The URL links to a website page in the Drexel Digital Museum (DDM) fashion image archive containing a 3D interactive panorama of an evening suit by American fashion designer James Galanos with related text. This afternoon dress is from Galanos' Fall 1976 collection. It is made from pale pink silk chiffon and finished with hand stitching on the hems and edges of this dress, The dress was gifted to Drexel University as part of The James G. Galanos Archive at Drexel University in 2016. After it was imaged the gown was deemed too fragile to exhibit. By imaging it using high resolution GigaPan technology we are able to create an archival quality digital record of the dress and exhibit it virtually at life size in 3D panorama. The panorama is an HTML5 formatted version of an ultra-high resolution ObjectVR created from stitched tiles captured with GigaPan technology. It is representative the ongoing research of the DDM, an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers focused on production, conservation and dissemination of new media for exhibition of historic fashion.

As part of ARL’s Research Library Impact Framework initiative, the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Libraries used its humanities core program—a year-long undergraduate freshman course that introduces students to the development of scholarly research using primary and secondary source resources—to answer the research question, “When students ‘see themselves’ represented in archives, do they experience an affective response that has an effect on how and what they learn through primary source literacy workshops?” UCI used entrance and exit surveys as assessment tools. Survey results show that the learning outcomes achieved during the community-centered archives workshop exceeded those achieved during the traditional primary literacy workshop. These findings suggest incorporating more inclusive histories into workshops and discussing the importance of representation in archives improves the student learning outcomes. When students “see themselves” represented in archives, they experience an affective response that impacts how and what they learn through primary source literacy workshops.

Fort Huachuca Environmental and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) sent funds to ERDC-CERL to develop a historic context that assists Fort Huachuca personnel in identifying the likely history and provenance of numerous historic range features located across Fort Huachuca's training lands. The historic context will be used by cultural resources personnel to evaluate and manage the resources appropriately. Various historic training range features (e.g., structures, fragments, and items left over from previous activities) are located across the ranges of Fort Huachuca, representing its long and storied history. To help identify and catalog these features, ERDC-CERL conducted a field survey of the training ranges in 2016 in or-der to photograph the historic range features. Forty-one historic range features were identified. Researchers conducted archival research, literature reviews, and image analysis of historic and current maps and photographs to identify the 41 historic range features and place them within a chronological context of Fort Huachuca's training ranges. The report concludes with guidance on how to identify and associate sites and features within the overall historic training range chronology and evaluate them appropriately for significance and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility.

Professor Leslie R. Marchant was a Western Australian historian of international renown. Richly educated as a child in political philosophy and critical reason, Marchant’s understandings of western political philosophies were deepened in World War Two when serving with an international crew of the merchant navy. After the war’s end, Marchant was appointed as a Protector of Aborigines in Western Australia’s Depart of Native Affairs. His passionate belief in Enlightenment ideals, including the equality of all people, was challenged by his experiences as a Protector. Leaving that role, he commenced his studies at The University of Western Australia where, in 1952, his Honours thesis made an early case that genocide had been committed in the administration of Aboriginal people in Western Australia. In the years that followed, Marchant became an early researcher of modern China and its relationship with the West, and won respect for his archival research of French maritime history in the Asia-Pacific. This work, including the publication of France Australe in 1982, was later recognised with the award of a French knighthood, the Chevalier d’Ordre National du Mèrite, and his election as a fellow to the Royal Geographical Society. In this festschrift, scholars from The University of Notre Dame Australia appraise Marchant’s work in such areas as Aboriginal history and policy, Westminster traditions, political philosophy, Australia and China and French maritime history.

This working paper approaches the current global crisis as a potential territoriality for radicalizing concepts and for learning with ongoing fugitive routes. Through nonlinear paths, I aim to examine the contours of the quilombo not only as a slavery-past event but as a continuum of anti-colonial struggle that invokes other forms of re-existence and convivial coexistence in Brazil. In doing that, this research draws attention to an Améfrica Ladina epistemology and a decolonial methodology embodied by living archives and oral histories.
