Abstract Ectopic eruption of teeth into regions other than the oral cavity is rare although there have been reports of teeth in the nasal septum, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, palate, chin, and maxillary sinus. Occasionally, a tooth may erupt in the maxillary sinus and present with local sinonasal symptoms attributed to chronic sinusitis. We present a case of an ectopic maxillary third molar tooth that caused chronic sinusitis in the maxillary sinus. Citation Büyükkurt MC, Tozoglu S, Aras MH, Yolcu Ü. Abstract Introduction There are no clear guidelines for deciding between endoscopic sinus surgery and tooth extraction for the treatment of odontogenic sinusitis. Furthermore, tooth extraction does not necessarily improve sinusitis and eventually results in additional endoscopic sinus surgery. Objective The present study aimed to retrospectively investigate negative predictive factors of tooth extraction for odontogenic sinusitis. Methods In total, 22 patients with odontogenic sinusitis, who underwent tooth extraction between April 2017 and March 2021, were included. The patients were divided

Cyst is defined as a pathological cavity which may or may not be lined by an epithelium and is usually filled with solid, semisolid or gaseous material. Dentigerous cyst is of odontogenic origin and is usually associated with an impacted tooth. Dentigerous cyst in maxillary antrum is often misdiagnosed in peripheral health care centers due to initial complaints mimicking maxillary sinusitis with patients reporting to general physicians/otolaryngologist for treatment. This article intends to report a case of infected dentigerous cyst initially managed as recurrent maxillary sinusitis in a perip

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis is a sinus pathology secondary to maxillary dental pathologies or complications from dental procedures. Due to its clinical presentations of sinonasal symptoms, odontogenic sources may be underdiagnosed, leading to an incorrect treatment. This report presents two cases in which odontogenic maxillary sinusitis was correctly diagnosed and treated by nonsurgical endodontic management. In both cases, the patients presented with pain or discomfort in the maxillary region, and the cone-beam computed tomography revealed thickening of the maxillary sinus membrane, which

In the treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis, the removal of causative teeth is actively used, although the tooth removal indications are not always clearly defined. Modern endodontic approaches and technologies, in most cases, help preserve the tooth in the oral cavity with the elimination of the chronic infection focus, thus restoring the integrity of the maxillary sinus.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening and compare it to the presence of odontogenic pathology of adjacent teeth. Three hundred and twenty-one full maxilla cone-beam computed tomography scans were examined. The parameters investigated included signs of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening and the diagnosis and proximity of the adjacent teeth. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS version-16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Out of the 2001 teeth examined, 888 (44.4%) were associated with mucosal thickening with a significant diffe

Oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, such as tooth extractions, surgical treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinus pathologies, dental implant surgery, orthognathic surgery, and sinus lift procedures, often correlate with the maxillary sinuses, due to anatomical proximity. For instance, in Le Fort I osteotomy, which is the predominant surgical technique preferred for the treatment of dentofacial deformities of the maxilla, the osteotomy line includes maxillary sinus and nasal walls.
