Abstract Metaphor permeates Islamic devotional literature and generates what might be construed as textual charisma. Aḥmad ibn Zayn al-Dīn al-Aḥsāʾī (1753/1166-1826/1241), eponym of the influential Shaykhī School of Twelver Shīʿism, author of numerous dense works of mystical philosophical theology on the Qurʾān and the Ḥadīth, reads and creates metaphors to establish a reasonable basis for the love of the Imāms, the prophet Muḥammad and his daughter Fāṭima, the Ahlu’l-bayt, the Fourteen Infallible Ones (in Persian, Chahārdah Maʿṣūm).
