Although eIF4E plays an important role in the development and progression of cancer, the mechanism through which it acts has not been directly characterised. In order to aid in the progression of this knowledge, an in vivo eIF4E-mRNA immunoprecipitation assay was developed and validated in NIH 3T3 cells. This assay demonstrates its ability to specifically pull down capped mRNAs bound to ectopically expressed 3X-FLAG tagged eIF4E. A temperature-dependant rabbit model of Haemophilus ducreyi infection was used as a quantitative virulence assay to evaluate the effect of host factors upon ulcerative cutaneous disease production. New Zealand White rabbits underwent inoculation with H. ducreyi strain #35000 either after iron loading, dexamethasone immunosuppression, prior infection or immunization. Chancroid-like disease was scored for severity, time, culture of lesions, and serologic response. In primary infections, culture-positive ulcerative lesions were consistently produced at and above 105 colony forming units inocula.

A soja geneticamente modificada tolerante ao herbicida glifosato foi testada em ensaio nutricional. A qualidade protéica da soja foi avaliada durante 14 dias de experimento com ratos machos tipo Wistar recém desmamados. Além de um grupo controle aproteico, quatro dietas testadas continham cerca de 10% de proteínas de diferentes fontes: caseína, soja comercial, soja parental e soja GM. Resultados similares entre os grupos demonstraram o baixo aproveitamento da proteína ingerida, conforme esperado para todas as dietas com soja não suplementadas com metionina e expressos pelos valores de PDCAAS.

<p>Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases in Sweden – more than 5000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The overall five-year survival is about 60% and in cases of recurrence the prognosis is poor.</p><p>In a phase III study in advanced colorectal cancer the response rate was doubled when 5-FU was given as a bolus injection versus as a short infusion.
