Introduction Despite progress in recent years, full antenatal care utilization in India continues to be relatively low and inequitable, particularly between states and districts. In 2015–2016, for example, only 51% of women aged 15–49 in India attended antenatal care at least four times during pregnancy. Using data from the fifth iteration of India’s National Family Health Survey, our study aims to explore factors related to the underutilization of antenatal care in India. We examined factors related to the uptake of two malaria prevention measures, insecticide-treated bed-nets and prophylactic sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), among pregnant women in Nnewi, Nigeria. The survey had a quantitative and qualitative part. For each part, the subjects meeting our inclusion criteria were systematically identified in a population-based manner. For the qualitative part, focused group discussions, in-depth interviews with a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., health workers, males whose wives are pregnant, and drug and net sellers), and key informants including doctors and

AbstractAntenatal care in Denmark is shared between general practitioners, midwives, and hospital departments. A minimum of 9 visits is officially recommended for all pregnant women. In 1987, 80% made 10 or more visits. An inadequate number of visits in relation to recommendations was most frequent in the lowest social group. Risk of stillbirth and neonatal death varied substantially between social groups even after taking account of number of visits made.

Antenatal care (ANC) plays a crucial role in preventing and detecting pregnancy risks, facilitating prompt treatment, and disseminating essential information to expectant mothers. This role is particularly vital in developing countries, where a 4.65% rise in maternal mortality rate was observed in 2022, with over 800 maternal and 7,700 perinatal deaths reported. This study aims to analyse the relationship between pregnancy planning and antenatal care in sub-Saharan Africa and to identify which categories of mothers are most likely to make inadequate use of antenatal care in the event of a mistimed or unwanted pregnancy. The latest data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 32 countries were analysed using bivariate and multivariate descriptive methods. The results show that compared with planned births, mistimed and unwanted births are respectively 27% (OR=0.733) and 29% (OR=0.711) less likely to have an antenatal visit in the first three months

Abstract Genetics is becoming more and more relevant to primary care. The aim of this chapter is to put this major development which affects existing and future babies and children, into context. Practice staff have an important role in educating and counselling carriers of common recessively inherited conditions (haemoglobin disorders, cystic fibrosis), in providing information to those offered testing elsewhere, and in referring carrier couples for genetic counselling. Many women attending for family planning advice intend to have a baby in the near future. This may be an ideal opportunity f
