India's exports have so far failed to take off to a longterm self-sustaining high growth path. In this paper⁄ Charan Wadhva provides a critical appraisal of the export performance and policies of India during the period 1950-97 with focus on two sub-periods of 1950-90 and 1991 onwards. He concludes that the actual record of growth of India's exports throughout the period 1950-97 can be explained by the strengths and weaknesses of India's export policies identified in this paper both at the governmental (macro) and industry (micro) levels. He also provides an illustrative list of major strategic policies and measures to enable India to fulfil national aspirations for re-emerging as a global player of greater consequence in line with India's potential in this regard.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a broad overview of welfare schemes in India and their impact on social protection during a period of high economic growth. It summarizes India's performance with respect to select economic and social indicators relative to select low and middle-income countries in the Asia Pacific region. It further overviews trends in some key select economic and social indicators for India and discusses India's attainment in Social Protection relative to an index of such protection provided by the Asian Development Bank. Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses a comparative statistical approach and evaluates India's performance in key social welfare areas vis-à-vis that of countries with economic performance comparable to that of India. It also evaluates India's progress along these parameters over time. Findings – The basic messages of this paper are: first, compared to low and middle-income countries in the Asia Pacific India's economic performance has outstripped its performance in social and welfare indicators. Second, nevertheless India is spending less on social welfare programs and other welfare schemes than many countries in the Asia Pacific, including some of those whose economic performance has been less impressive than India's. Third, the efficiency and effectiveness of key welfare programs in India need to be substantially improved. Particular attention needs to be paid to female participation in and their access to social welfare programs. Originality/value – Informed analyses of social sector spending in India and their impact on welfare outcomes are relatively scarce although descriptive studies of social sector spending and welfare schemes abound. This paper attempts to fill this gap with a cross-country as well as intertemporal analysis of India's performance in these key areas.

This paper by Jagdish Bhagwati presents a critical appraisal of India's economic strategy over the last five decades. According to Bhagwati, while India's democratic success has been outstanding, her economics has been a big disappointment leaving the economy in a state of economic backwardness. By 80s⁄ India's economic failure became a classic case study to lean what not to do. Recent reforms, which signal the final discrediting of the failed ideas⁄ have started dismantling the past policies that crippled India's performance. However⁄ Bhagwati feels that the prospects for a complete transition still remain problematic partly on account of the politics of coalitions at the centre and partly because the dissent from the supporters of India's earlier policies may create confusion and delays.

Indira, Nagaraju Rajeev. "India's Economic Growth: Role of Political Performance and Gender Wage Gap." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4370.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation will explore how gender wage gap and political capacity represented by relative political extraction affect change in economic growth rate of a country. The main argument of the study is that gender wage gap is affecting the labor market by discouraging productive female labor force from entering the labor market. This in turn affects the efficiency and productivity of the labor market reflected in negative economic growth or economic growth potential being compromised. Here the case of Indian economy is examined. The important policy implication of this study is that it could account for the wage differential between genders and it could show how economies are missing out on the labor productivity and in turn negatively affecting the rate of economic growth. Various sociological literatures have dealt in depth with the gender wage gap and its effect on the socio-cultural fabric of a society. While the current study recognizes existence of extensive sociological theories on gender wage gap, the focus is on the economic impact of gender wage gap on the growth rate change of a country. The argument is that gender wage gap negatively affects the economic growth rate change. Economic growth literature have proved beyond doubt that economic and political factor together contribute to the economic growth of a country. Political variables such as political capacity reflects the efficiency of the government in resource extraction, its reach and allocation of those resources extracted. Such an efficient government provides the necessary environment for the economic growth. However, this political variable alone is not enough to increase economic growth of an economy. Rather governments must also possess the economic tools necessary, such as capital stock, human labor and labor force. These economic and political variables together can contribute towards an increased economic growth. How these political and economic factors combine to achieve economic growth of a country? Hence this study looks at both the economic and political variables in a model to see how they affect economic growth.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the everyday activities of Indian youth on the MTV India Facebook fan page. The two-phase research design included a period of participant observation, combined with conducting online interviews, and a visit to New Delhi, India to conduct offline interviews. The thesis analyzes several aspects of identity performance (e.g. online identity performance, relation between online and offline identity, ideal presentation of an online identity) in relation to Goffman’s (1959) presentation of self in everyday life, and argues that the MTV India Facebook fan page has become a site for identity performance. Since such identity performance is bounded by participants’ everyday activities, the fan page can also be identified as a particular ‘place’. I use Tuan’s (1977) idea of ‘place-making’ and illustrate how the MTV India Facebook fan page has become a meaningful and familiar ‘place’ overtime through performance of routine activities and everyday practices (Seamon, 1979). These activities can be identified as articulating ‘Youngistan’ (voice of Indian youth) and performing Indian-ness, suggesting that fans have appropriated the fan page for performing specific activities that are particular to them. In addition, the thesis takes the local-global character into consideration and argues that local-global combine together to form separate, unique cultures such as MTV India, which safeguard ‘locality’ within the global product and help in ‘place-making’ activities.

Traditional investment portfolios are focused only on two asset classes: Stocks and Bonds. In recent decades institutional portfolios and private investors have, for balanced risk profiles, focused on 60% of global stock usually through the US S&P500 and 40% bonds through the Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index. Therefore, it is necessary to increase exposure to other financial instruments in order to diversify these portfolios and reduce systemic risks in financial markets. If so, investors should consider adding alternatives to their traditional investments as a way to potentially reduce their portfolios sensitivity to financial markets. It is therefore necessary to consider investment alternatives, in order to get adjusted returns to risk in setting up investment portfolios. Absolute return funds or hedge funds, may present a valid alternative investment in times of high volatility, and have gained visibility in periods of bear markets compared to stock index funds, consequently leading to an increase in demand, i.e., an increase of assets under management for these assets. This study aims to analyze the combination of investable indices of hedge funds in a traditional portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. It is intended to determine the minimum variance portfolio and Markowitz and the respective weights of hedge fund indices in the reference portfolio and compare their performance considering time windows of two, five and ten years.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines the role of product quality on India’s export performance to its major trading partners. It aims at evaluating the empirical relevance of product quality to explore India’s export performance from 1996-2015 using different estimation methods. The first chapter examines the relationship between product quality and export quantity in the context of how product quality influences the quantity of Indian exports traded in the global market. We perform the analysis by constructing extensive set of quality estimates and using those estimates to analyze the influence of product quality on Indian export quantity. The second chapter deals with the probability of export entry and exit of India’s exports at goods level. We draw annual product level export data for India to each of its top exporters from UN-COMTRADE recorded in the Harmonized System (HS) at the six-digit level covering the period 1996–2015. In the third chapter, we develop an entirely different dataset on export quality using a different methodology for the textiles sector. After we obtain our new set of quality estimates, we use those quality estimates to analyze the determinants of quality growth in panel cross-country framework.

AbstractFood transfers, employment generation through public works programs, supplemental nutritional assistance to pregnant mother and infant children, old age pensions, and school meals are among the major social safety nets that constitute India’s social welfare architecture. In this chapter, we review these schemes along with some of the newer programs and their performance in the light of India’s developmental trajectory over the past seven decades. We argue that to facilitate a resilient development process in the future, these programs must be attuned to the changing economic and demographic transformation of the economy.

Streszczenie:
Buildings can use less energy if they finish their walls and ceilings with gypsum board. The construction of homes, businesses, and factories uses this material, which was developed in Australia in the early 1990s and then adopted by other countries including China and India. Without the need for columns or beams, gypsum walls can be used as slabs and walls for structural and aesthetic reasons. A lack of fresh building supplies is a result of India's severe housing deficit. The use of sustainable solutions is always preferable when resources are few. To optimally use gypsum board as building material, methods are needed to reduce mold and condensation that frequently found on the material and inner surface of board. This study compares the thermal efficiency of several gypsum partition walls. The test parameters considered in the walls included with and without filler material on thermal performance. Filler materials considered as EPS sheets. Present study will help to choose the right combination of materials for improving the thermal performance of gypsum partition walled structures.

Streszczenie:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">India's natural gas consumption reached 60.3 billion cubic meters (BCM) in the year 2022-23, with imports accounting for 44.2% of the total consumption. As India targets 15% of primary energy consumption from gas by 2030, the demand for natural gas is expected to grow significantly. In this context, CBG (bio-CNG) which can reduce dependence on imported natural gas, has emerged as a viable alternative to CNG. The government's SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative encourages entrepreneurs to establish CBG plants and supply CBG to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) for use as automotive and industrial fuels. As of June 2023, 50 CBG plants have been set up, and 128 retail outlets in India are selling CBG as a transportation fuel. The quality requirements of CBG are governed by IS 16087, aligning with the specifications for automotive CNG defined in IS 15958.</div><div class="htmlview paragraph">To assess the impact of CBG on vehicle performance and emissions, an experimental study was conducted using unmodified BS VI three-wheeler and passenger car CNG vehicles. Commercial CNG served as a baseline fuel, while a commercial CBG sample was used as candidate fuel. The experiments followed the Indian driving cycle (IDC) and modified Indian driving cycle (MIDC) for three-wheelers and passenger cars, respectively. The results obtained from the commercial CBG fuel demonstrated comparable levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions for CNG and CBG fuels. Notably, CBG led to a reduction of 14.6% in NOx emissions for three-wheelers and 9.4% for passenger cars, while non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) emissions decreased by 35.6%. Further, the fuel economy, vehicle power and acceleration of the test vehicles was found to be comparable for CNG and CBG fuels. These findings highlight the potential of CBG fuel, as a sustainable alternative to CNG fuel.</div></div>

Streszczenie:
In India, these days, the solicitation for electric bicycles continues expanding step by step. Be that as it may, as indicated by the office foundation and in contemplations of India's best electric bikes, it is nearly difficult to utilize such electric bicycles for long excursions till today. Likewise, such bicycles set aside an excess of effort to get completely energized. To limit these downsides, we will see an idea of the crossover bike utilizing the Stirling Engine in this paper. The fundamental explanation for choosing the Stirling motor is, it is eco-accommodating and doesn't need a particular warmth source as a fuel. In straight words, this idea has a place in the law of energy preservation. This paper includes the concept, functions, and testing of the developed model along with an explanation of various tests performed to calibrate the performance.

Streszczenie:
India's agricultural sector, despite transitioning across economic domains, remains heavily reliant on its agrarian foundation, which faces substantial challenges from natural and human-induced disruptions. Leveraging technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning holds immense promise in bolstering agricultural productivity by providing actionable insights. This study focuses on harnessing Deep Learning techniques to forecast seasonal Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) in paddy fields using satellite imagery and an in-depth analysis of paddy field health based on the predicted NDVI values with a specific emphasis on the Kuttanad region in Kerala, India. Integration of Deep Learning models, particularly Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, the research aims to deliver precise and timely predictions of NDVI, facilitating a holistic evaluation of crop health dynamics. Time series satellite imagery with optimal temporal resolution and suitable spectral bands for NDVI computation is utilized for analysis. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of LSTM models in accurately predicting seasonal NDVI. The predicted NDVI values are correlated with ground truth data, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of paddy field health. The developed model demonstrated superior performance, achieving notable accuracy of an R2 value of 0.978. Comparing anticipated NDVI values to benchmarked periods of optimal vegetation health, one can assess the current state of crops and predict future trends in vegetation conditions.

Streszczenie:
We investigate whether better access to markets through an improved road network plays a role in improving firm profitability in India. We construct a district-level market access index using shapefiles of India's road network, district boundaries, and nightlight raster images and estimate the shortest driving distances for districts using the road network. Using the annual survey of industries data for India during 2001–2015, we show that market access through improved road connectivity resulted in a lower dispersion of ROA between 2001 and 2015 in India.
