Pełny tekst źródłaNon-conscious behavioral synchronization is adaptive, depending on affiliation and participating in fostering social cohesion. It is found within various species, including humans, but little is known about such a phenomenon between species. Due to their close association, dog and human dyads is a good biological model to study interspecific behavioral synchronization.For the first time, behavioral synchronization of dogs with humans was evidenced between highly affiliated partners (i.e. pet dogs and their owners) when freely walking inside or in open outside area, and when facing an unfamiliar person. The effect of affiliation was also investigated: lower affiliated partners (i.e. shelter dogs and their caregiver) exhibited lower degree of synchronization with human compare to highly affiliated partners, similarly than between humans. This is the first time that the effect of affiliation on behavioral synchronization has been evidenced at interspecific level. Almost no effect of age, sex or breed was evidenced. Finally, it was evidenced that pet dogs exhibit increased affiliation towards humans who synchronized their behavior with them. It is the third species in which such an ability is evidenced, and the first time it is found in canids.To conclude, as in humans, behavioral synchronization acts as a social-glue between dogs and humans. It is the first time that such a skill is evidenced between a primate species and a canid species; it suggests a convergent evolution of this behavior, and human-like processes in dogs. Applied implications of such findings, as well as Tinbergen (1963) four’s inquiries for behavioral synchronization are discussed

Pełny tekst źródłaThe way children and adolescents decode information about an animal or a human, and the type of interaction that follows, deserves particular attention, as accurately extracting information is crucial for appropriate interaction. Visual attention is a key cognitive function. In individuals with ASD, alterations in information acquisition are often observed, particularly an atypical visual exploration of human stimuli, which can limit their interactions. However, this atypicality does not seem to apply to animal stimuli, suggesting that it could facilitate interactions between individuals with ASD and animals. This thesis examines visual attention in naturalistic contexts through an approach combining eye-tracking and ethology, with both cross-sectional and longitudinal measures. We first characterized the visual attention of youths with ASD and typically developing (TD) youths towards a dog, establishing a link between visual attention, understanding of others, and behavior. Youths with ASD interacted with the dog in a similar way but paid less attention to both human and canine faces. We then described visual exploration strategies for faces across a panel of species (rabbit, guinea pig, dog, horse, human). Youths with ASD looked at animals in a similar way to TD youths but differed in their attention to the human face. Finally, a longitudinal approach showed that the presence of an assistance dog in a school setting could improve the ability to identify human and canine facial expressions. ASD may not be a generalized communication disorder but rather a human-centered one. Visual attention is essential in both intra- and interspecies interactions, helping to better understand the role of animal presence in the development of social and emotional skills in youths, especially those with ASD

Pełny tekst źródłaMixing with conspecifics and interactions with humans are two of the major stress sources for pregnant sows. They may respond to it in different ways. This variability of response, if it is time stable, draws the concept of animal personality. Stress response and personality could have an impact on the offspring behaviour, as well as early positive experiences with human. This study thus first focused on the investigation of the individual response variability and stability to a social stressor, and its impact on the stress response. Social status can modulate the stressor impact ; we thus previously investigated the characteristics of the hierarchy inside our groups. Since the aggressiveness seemed to be a valuable indicator of the social stress response variability, we investigated its impact on piglets’ behaviour. Finally, we studied the effects of sows’ reaction to humans and their interactions with early positive human handling on piglets’ behaviour.We demonstrated that the hierarchy inside groups of sows is linear, steep and stable, which limited the impact of the social stress. The most aggressive sows were also the most dominant and least injured, but no effects of sows aggressiveness were described on their stress levels, neither on their piglets’ behaviour. Piglets born from fearful sows showed behavioural responses in various tests that could be directly or indirectly attributed to the fear of human. Positive experiences with humans improved human-piglets relation but didn’t erase the maternal effects. Piglets born from fearful sows had lower performances in a spatial memory task that could be attributed to a general anxious state. This study raises the importance of the breeding of sows in stable groups to lower the impact of a possible social stress thanks to the hierarchy. It also points out the importance of a good human-animal relation in sow breedings, not only for their own welfare but also for their piglets’
