This article focuses on the literary criticism of the Edo-period scholar, Seita Tansō (1719–1785). Although a historian by vocation, Tansō additionally lectured extensively on the Chinese vernacular novel, Shuihu zhuan (Jp. Suikoden, En. The Water Margin). While earlier generations of Chinese fiction aficionados in Japan had also discussed Shuihu zhuan, early eighteenth-century analysis was primarily limited to philological explication—a task necessitated by the extensive use of colloquial language in the novel. In contrast to this tradition of philological exegesis, Tansō turned his attention to the ethical content and literary structure of Shuihu zhuan. Tansō was heavily influenced by the writing of the Chinese fiction commentator Jin Shengtan (1608–1661), and in this article, I discuss Tansō's use of Jin's fiction criticism in the construction of his own interpretation of the novel. I argue that the dissemination of Chinese novels in Edo-period Japan cannot be discussed without an understanding of Japanese engagement with Chinese narrative theory, and I identify Seita Tansō as an important figure in a transition from philological to more purely narratological analysis of Chinese vernacular fiction.

La thèse examine la poétique élaborée par le critique Jin Shengtan (1608 - 1661) sur le Pavillon de l'ouest (Xixiangji) de Wang Shifu (vers 1300). Dans une première partie, elle étudie l'établissement de l’édition de l'œuvre par le poéticien, sa conception d'un art " théâtral" exclusivement destiné à la lecture, et la manière, très élaborée, dont il installe son commentaire au cœur même du texte, établissant ainsi un appareil critique sophistiqué capable d' << ausculter >> en profondeur les moindres détails du texte. Une deuxième partie se consacre à l'étude d'une poétique de l'indirect conçue comme reposant sur le mode de la naturalité. Le pavillon de l'ouest fait figure, aux yeux du poéticien, d'un <> de l'ordre même de la nature, un ordre dans lequel l'accès au sens nécessite un cheminement toujours détourné. La terminologie critique du commentateur est examinée de façon aussi exhaustive que possible, notamment à travers une étude des << procédés littéraires >> (fa) que Jin Shengtan estime être à l'œuvre dans l'art de l'écrire de l'auteur ; des références sont faites à cette occasion aux importants fa développés dans sa critique du roman au bord de l'eau. Sont également étudiés les éléments qui, dans cette terminologie, contribuent à conférer à l'œuvre cohérence et continuité d'ensemble, ainsi que les diverses stratégies d'indirect que le commentateur estime avoir été développées par l'auteur. Une troisième partie se consacre à une retombée de cet art de l'indirect : la moralisation radicale d'une œuvre à la fois admirée et jugée scandaleuse. Cette entreprise est fondée sur la poétique même de l'indirect précédemment étudiée, poétique marquée de manière foncière par la notion de paradoxe. Dans cette partie, des références sont faites à la littérature de contes (huaben) développée au XVIIe siècle à partir de thèmes en relation avec le Pavillon de l'ouest. La conclusion nous amène à une conception globale de la pièce comme reposant sur la notion d'indifférenciation, condition de l'avènement de tout phénomène particulier. Elle ouvre aussi une perspective sur une possible valeur emblématique de la pièce : celle, d'ordre politique, d'un rapport acceptable entre le prince et le ministre, dans lequel une relation idéale du masculin et du féminin servirait de paradigme.

As far as the comments regarding to "Tales of the marshes" by Jin Shengtan are concerned, Jin Shengtan''s viewpoints not only creates meaningful inspirations toward people but also pave a solid ground for his distinguish achievements in the history of criticism of Chinese novel. Jin Shengtan conducts some literature rebuilding through literature criticism and revising published novel (like revised version of Tales of the marshes) with his passion and earnestness. In respect to Jin Shengtan''s viewpoints, the most noticeable feature is the affirmation of subjective sense which is related to author, readers and commentator. Furthermore, Jin Shengtan''s assertion about readers'' sense of awareness is a worthy subject for studying.     Jin Shengtan claims some prerequisites for writing such as talent, loose writing rules and keen sense and he also emphasizes the importance of analyzing readers'' acceptance in advance. This thesis is proposed to discuss Jin Shengtan and the book "revised Tales of the marshes" written by him. This thesis will also be focused on readers'' sense of awareness looking for obtaining some contribution in this field.     This thesis is divided into five aspects to be discussed:   Chapter 1 will be used to explain the motivation and purposes of this study, overview all utilized references and needed descriptions about methodologies and steps used in this thesis.     Chapter 2: Conducting a survey focused on Jin Shengtan''s personality and his thinking for better understanding the interconnections of his literature activities and cultural background.     Chapter 3 and chapter 4: describing the Jin Shengtan''s viewpoints in novel and writing skills in "revised Tales of the marshes", the fictional characteristics of a novel as well as the subject, personality, scenarios and expressing skills in an invented novel so as to explore Jin Shengtan’s major concerns for a perfect novel.     Chapter 5: Special explanations will be given due to Jin Shengtan possessing reader and writer both identities and dedicated explications will lead readers to having an insight into the novel''s writer by means of deep reading and accumulated perceiving abilities.     Chapter 6 is the conclusion of this thesis : main elements will be Jin Shengtan''s special appreciations and achievements in novel, the influences toward follow-on literature criticism and readers'' sense of awareness which will be given special emphasis. Jin Shengtan''s theories and thinking will also be analyzed and explored because its'' constructive contributions to the innovating and criticizing of the contemporary literature.

This thesis examines three aspects of the commentary edition of the Chinese vernacular novel Shuihu Zhuan written by Ming Dynasty literatus Jin Shengtan (ca. 1610-1661), analyzing three of the most innovative features that the commentary brings to our understanding of the novel, and what Jin Shengtan desired for the reader of his commentary to understand. The first chapter looks at a series of techniques that Jin outlines in the preliminary "How to Read" section of the commentary (dufa), where the techniques are shown to be very similar in focus and style to the literary theory of narratology as written about by Gerard Genette through a sample comparison of five of the techniques with varying characteristics of narratology. The second chapter looks at how Jin Shengtan constructs the image of the author, Shi Nai'an, through both his interlineal commentary (jiapi) and his preliminary chapter commentary (zongpi). We see through this analysis that Jin Shengtan has gone against the tradition of shu er bu zuo -- a Confucian tradition that relegates the position of the author to the background of his work -- and has brought the author into a position of prominence through his construction of the image of an unparalleled genius. The third and final chapter looks at the idea of "heroism" (xia) and how Jin's commentary reworks the way many of the primary characters of the novel and their heroic actions are seen and interpreted, focusing especially on the characters of Wu Song, Lu Zhishen, Song Jiang and Li Kui, where we see that Jin's commentary focuses on parallels between the heroes such as Wu Song and Lu Zhishen in the first portion of the novel, while switching to a more juxtapositional perspective in the latter half of the novel through Song Jiang and Li Kui.

The introduction of various sects of I-Kuan Tao (IKT) to Taiwan beginning in 1946 had resulted in conflicts between the religion and the government due to the promulgation of martial law in Taiwan at the time. Crackdown by law enforcements, negative reports by medias, and criticisms of IKT as an evil cult led to a series of opposition against IKT; it was not until after 1987 that IKT was recognized and legalized by the Taiwanese government. There are currently many sects of IKT distributed throughout parts of Taiwan, each with its own unique development and features; many IKT sects also recently started to establish IKT institutes to target youths. Although Bao-Guang Jan-De Institute realized the need to establish a site for college students in 1991, due to problems initially encountered trying to establish a common goal and organizational operations and later a shortage of manpower and funds, the project was eventually dropped. It was not until 2003 that the project was re-planned under a unified operation to avoid the problems that occurred in 1991. With support from conventional Sites, the Shenglin Site of Taoist Rituals, which is part of Bao-Guang Jan-De Institute, was successfully established in 2004. The establishment of the Shenglin Site of Taoist Rituals aims to continue college education for students who have studied at Bao-Guang Jan-De Institute since childhood. The Shenglin Site of Taoist Rituals hopes that when IKT youths leave home to pursue further studies, they can become friendly and accept course arrangements made by the Shenglin Site of Taoist Rituals to achieve the purpose of talent cultivation. In many recent activities held by Bao-Guang Jan De Institute, one concept has been constantly emphasized, “IKT needs youths as youths need IKT” with the hope of passing down the spirit of IKT through youth cultivation; Bao-Guang Jan De Institute also hopes that spreading the concepts of IKT outwards through the power of youths, chances and channels for IKT development can also be increased.
