Due to changes in pedestrian postures, illuminations, and perspectives, it remains a significant challenge to improve the accuracy of person re-identification. Although the attention mechanism can alleviate some of these issues, it causes attention-based methods to pay excessive attention to features in the most salient areas of images while ignoring discriminant features outside the most salient areas, resulting in the

This study examines a type of event-based sampling known as Level Crossing - its behaviour when applied to noisy signals, and an application to cardiac arrhythmia detection. Using a probabilistic approach, it presents a mathematical description of events sampled from noisy signals, and uses the model to estimate characteristics of the underlying clean signal. It evaluates the use of segments of polynomials, calculated from the Level Crossing samples of real cardiac signals, as features for machine learning algorithms to identify various types of arrhythmia.

A sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), SFR-600, is under development at KAERI. Its fuel is the metal fuel of U-TRU-Zr and it uses sodium as coolant. Its advantages are found in the aspects of an excellent uranium resource utilization, inherent safety features, and non-proliferation. SFR-600 has passive safety features such as passive shutdown functions, passive pump coast-down features, and passive decay heat removal systems. It has inherent reactivity feedback effects. The probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) will be one of the initiating subjects for designing it from the aspects of a risk inf

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are expected to improve safety by gradually reducing human decisions while driving. However, there are still questions on their effectiveness as we transition from almost 0% CAVs to 100% CAVs with different levels of vehicle autonomy. This research focuses on synthesizing literature and identifying risk factors influencing fatal crashes involving level 1 and level 2 CAVs in the United States. Fatal crashes involving level 0 vehicles—ones that are not connected and automated—were compared to minimize unobserved heterogeneity and randomness associated with

Autonomous vehicles are reshaping the car rental and ridesharing industries, potentially leading to a unified model of on-demand transportation suitable for both uncommon (e.g., business trips) and daily commuting. An exploratory study of human behavior towards autonomous vehicles can uncover the challenges and opportunities inherent in different levels of vehicle automation. This study aims to (a) identify behavioral differences in drivers operating vehicles at various levels of automation and (b) explore how these behaviors vary with different assistance feature styles, specifically between

The transportation studies literature recognizes the relationship between accessibility and active travel. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of walking and cycling accessibility to multi-use paths on active travel behavior. Combined with the culture of automobile dependency in the US, this knowledge gap has been making it difficult for policy-makers to encourage walking and cycling mode choices, highlighting the need to promote a walking and cycling culture in cities. In this case, a clustering effect (“you bike, I bike”) can be used as leverage to initiate such a trend

Historically, the State of California assessed the environmental impacts of proposed developments based on how it was projected to affect an area’s level of service (LOS). However, as LOS focused on traffic delays, many agencies simply widened roads, which was an ineffective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). With the passage of Senate Bill (SB)743 in 2013, LOS was replaced by Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) as a more appropriate metric by which to gauge the environmental impacts of proposed development. Additionally, SB 743 presented an opportunity for off-site VMT mitigation strateg

Governments in the world’s poorest countries face severe revenue constraints. They typically collect less than 10 per cent of GDP in taxes, compared to 25–50 per cent in high-income countries. The literature on state capacity and development argues that inability to collect taxes is at the heart of why low-income countries are as poor as they are. It suggests that the path to economic prosperity may begin with investment in governments’ capacity to collect the tax revenue necessary to provide public goods that enhance productivity. Property taxation is often the primary source of government re
