Streszczenie:
Abstract. In this article, the degree of representativeness of the examples (pairs of lexical units) which illustrate antonymous relations in the English language has been determined, utilizing the method of linguistic interviewing. The article presents the procedure and the results of the psycholinguistic experiment conducted. The peculiarities of the method of linguistic interviewing as a type of psycholinguistic experiment have been defined. A selection of antonymous pairs provided by leading linguists in the area of lexical semantics as illustrative examples in thirteen English-language linguistic works (monographs, textbooks and linguistic encyclopaedias) serves as the material for the experiment. All of the 101 respondents are scholars in the field of linguistics (Candidates (Ph.D.) and Doctors of Philological Sciences, as well as postgraduate students from the higher educational establishments of Ukraine), and are native speakers of Ukrainian, English being their first foreign language. In the experiment, the respondents were to identify which pairs of lexical items given in the list illustrate the relation of antonymy. After analyzing the results of linguistic interviewing, we were able to determine the pairs of antonyms with the highest and the lowest degrees of representativeness. The research demonstrated that gradable and complementary antonyms, mainly adjectives, have the highest degree of representativeness. In addition, we identified certain correlations with the results of linguistic interviewing conducted earlier, the respondents being linguistics scholars, including university and college professors, who are native speakers of English from five English-speaking countries.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the communication strategies employed between investigators and detained individuals during interrogations, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic interactions in this particular context. The theoretical framework is based on Julia Oglesby's (2010) linguistics and investigative interviewing and Eric Shepherd's (2018) conversation management approach in investigative interviewing. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, involving detailed analysis of actual interrogations between investigators and detainees. The data comprises recordings and transcripts of these dialogues. The conversations are analyzed from a linguistic and communication strategy perspective, focusing on language usage, question structures, and persuasive techniques. The study will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of communication during interrogations, identifying effective and ineffective strategies, as well as their impact on the outcomes of the interrogations. Ultimately, this research contributes to a better understanding of linguistic interactions in the context of interrogations, potentially improving interrogation skills and methods, and ensuring justice and efficiency in the legal process.

Cognitive interviewing (CI) has emerged as a key qualitative method for the pretesting and evaluation of self-report survey questionnaires. This article defines CI, describes its key features, and outlines the data analysis techniques that are commonly used. The authors then consider recent extensions of cognitive testing to the cross-cultural survey research realm, where the major practical objectives are: (1) to facilitate inclusion of a range of cultural and linguistic groups and (2) for purposes of comparative analysis, to produce survey questionnaire items that exhibit comparability of measurement, across groups. Challenges presented by this extension to the cross-cultural and multilingual areas are discussed. Finally, the authors introduce the articles contained within the current special issue of Field Methods (2011), which endeavor to apply cognitive testing in specific cross-cultural survey projects, and to both identify and suggest solutions to the unique problems that face questionnaire designers and researchers more generally, in the practice of survey pretesting and evaluation methods as these endeavor to cover the sociocultural spectrum.

In interviewing witnesses, the Cognitive Interviewing (CI) technique has become an international benchmark with the potential to significantly reduce coercive tactics in police interviews. However, this requires the adaptation of CI to new languages, cultures and legal systems. This article demonstrates that such adaptation is a more complex exercise than merely translating the training manuals. It proposes an evidence-based translation procedure known as the Delphi method using rounds of questionnaires with experts in relevant fields. It demonstrates transparently the process of adapting the CI instructions to non-English-speaking countries using an example from Indonesia. Importantly, the proposed method takes into account the pragma-linguistic context of police interviews in Indonesia. This article provides a road map for adapting investigative interviewing to culturally and linguistically diverse international communities required by the implementation of the 2021 United Nations Declaration of ‘The Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information Gathering’.

Streszczenie:
The study examines the concept of cultural determinism in relation to the business interview, analysing differences in language use between English, French and West German native speakers. The approach is multi- and inter-disciplinary combining linguistic and business research methodologies. An analytical model based on pragmatic and speech act theory is developed to analyse language use in telephone market research interviews. The model aims to evaluate behavioural differences between English, French and West German respondents in the interview situation. The empirical research is based on a telephone survey of industrial managers, conducted in the three countries in the national language of each country. The telephone interviews are transcribed and compared across languages to discover how managers from each country use different language functions to reply to questions and requests. These differences are assessed in terms of specific cultural parameters: politeness, self-assuredness and fullness of response. Empirical and descriptive studies of national character are compared with the survey results, providing the basis for an evaluation of the relationship between management culture and national culture on a contrastive and comparative cross-cultural basis. The project conclusions focus on the implications of the findings both for business interviewing and for language teaching.

However, it has been receiving little attention in language studies. The purpose of this research is to compare the English job interview register with the other English language registers along the five dimensions of variation identified by Biber (1988 et seq.) through Multidimensional Analysis (MDA). To do so, this research is based on Corpus Linguistics (CL) that deals with the collection and exploitation of corpora with the purpose of helping to research a language or part of it. (BERBER SARDINHA, 2000; 2004). The corpus of this study was the Job Interview Corpus (JIC), composed of 40 real job interviews conducted in Germany with native speakers from Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, totaling approximately 50,000 words. In order to enable MDA, the study corpus, JIC, was grammatically tagged with the Biber Tagger and later processed by the Biber Tag Count, which calculated the frequency of 67 linguistic variables considered in this study. The MDA results showed how the English job interviews of the study corpus, JIC, resemble or differentiate from the other English language registers along the five dimensions of variation (BIBER, 1988 et seq.). Since there are no precedents of studies within the CL devoted to the investigation of English job interviews in a multidimensional analysis, this research intends to fill this gap in the academic field<br>Em um cenário em que cada vez mais o processo de seleção de candidatos a uma vaga de emprego se torna mais exigente (JOSEPH, 2013), o estudo das entrevistas de emprego em inglês é de grande importância.

Despite many studies of language use in motivational interviewing, the vast majority have based this upon the quantitative coding of practitioner and client linguistic behaviours in order to relate these to client change outcomes. The current study aimed to investigate how clients and practitioners co-constructed the process of change using discourse analysis. Ten MI sessions for alcohol use were analysed in terms of how alcohol was verbally constructed, the functions and effects of rhetorical strategies employed and subject positions. Power and subjectivity were considered alongside these strands of analysis. The findings suggest that clients and therapists constructed alcohol as either a destroyer or facilitator, drawing upon discourses of differing degrees of power, which impacted upon the availability of client positions of agency and expertise in relation to alcohol. There was also a diversity of function within categories of client and practitioner speech. These findings have implications for clinical practice, in terms of moving beyond the recognition of ‘types of client talk’ and responding with an ‘MI consistent’ verbal behaviour, and moving towards reinvigorating the spirit of MI in relation to clinical outcome.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In disseminating information about health issues, government health departments and NGOs use, inter alia, written health texts. In a country like South Africa, these texts are generally written by medical experts and thereafter translated into the languages of the people. One of these languages is Zulu, which is spoken by the majority of South Africans. A large percentage of Zulu speakers are illiterate or semi-literate, especially in the rural areas. For this reason, Zulu translators have to use ‘simple’ language that these readers would understand when translating English texts into Zulu. Translators are expected to use strategies that can deal with non-lexicalized, problematic or other related terms that appear in health texts, as well as geographical and cultural constraints. This study focuses on the strategies used by Zulu translators in an attempt to make translated Zulu health texts accessible to the target readership. The investigation includes the use of self-administered questionnaires for respondents from two of South Africa’s nine provinces, where Zulu speakers are found (Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal), to determine whether the health texts do reach the target readership. Focus groups, semi-structured interviews and other complementary techniques were used to collect data from the selected respondents. Furthermore, a parallel concordance called ParaConc was used to extract and analyse data from the corpus as compiled for the present study, in an attempt to investigate the strategies used to make the translated health texts easier to read. The study uncovers various strategies which are used when translating English health texts into Zulu. These strategies include the use of loan words, paraphrasing, cultural terms and so on. In future, the use of ParaConc can be broadened to investigate newly discovered translation strategies, with the aim of making health texts more accessible to the target readers. Furthermore, this software programme can also be used to study translation strategies as used in other types of texts, for example journalistic texts.<br>Linguistics<br>D. Litt. et Phil. The image of Magellan as a modern hero who strongly wanted and tried at any price to complete the circumnavigation of the earth, but whom death prevented from doing so partly arose as soon as the first reports of the journey following the arrival of the only ship, Victoria, with 18 survivors were issued. Among these, there is the account Maximilianus Transylvanus gave on the basis of the information obtained interviewing a group of survivors, including Captain Elcano. He immediately understood the political relevance and the propaganda potential of the success of Magellan’s enterprise. In this article we will analyze De Moluccis insulis, highlighting the content and linguistic choices that contribute to creating an image of the expedition, of Magellan and of the role of Spain in the new world.

Streszczenie:
AbstractAs a traditional and dominant practice of qualitative research, interviewing is heavily dependent on meanings constructed by language. In a cross-cultural setting, the challenge of adequately capturing what interviewees want to convey is well acknowledged by researchers. Indeed, meanings are not only tied to linguistic meanings but also to cultural practices. Moreover, when the focus of one’s research is to understand the mindsets and practices of farmers, focusing solely on spoken words may also hide the fact that farmers also engage with plants, soil and nature through emotions and feelings. In this chapter I will reflect on my personal experiences as a non-Japanese Asian researcher working with an interpreter during my field work in Japan. In the interviews I conducted with farmers, I used photographs of local artwork to elicit information to understand what relationships they may build between the artworks and their farming practices. I used photo elicitation to supplement the limitations of language in making sense of meanings tied to farming practices. Also, to convey results to a western audience, I explore the use of visual illustrations to complement verbal quotes to more fully convey the meaning of the quotes. Two main observations emerged from this cross-cultural experience: first, the gap between language and cultural meaning can provide valuable opportunities for researchers to experiment with different methods, that broaden our sensibilities beyond rational reasoning in data collection; second, using photography in interviews can unfold different layers of realities than talk-only interviews. I argue that visual methods can take us beyond language and open up a more diverse picture to understand the practices of farmers. It is therefore important for cross-cultural researchers to be reflexive about the limitations of language, transform these challenges to an opportunity to remake method and open up different layers of understanding.

Domain expertise, such as medical or linguistic knowledge is desirable, but other factors may be equally important. The University of Utah has a group of 20+ reviewers with backgrounds in medicine and linguistics, and 10 key traits have surfaced in those best able to annotate quickly and with high quality. To identify reviewers with these key traits, we created a hiring process that includes interviewing candidates, testing their medical and linguistic knowledge, and having them complete an annotation exercise on realistic medical text. Each step is designed to assess the key traits and allow the investigator to choose the skill set required for each project.

By analyzing manifest media content on the Internet, as well as by interviewing people involved in Internet development, this chapter goes beyond the question of access to the Internet and asks how language factors exacerbate the digital divide in an impoverished country. Initiating non-Western alphabet domain names and setting culturally inclusive non-Western alphabet standards have been important steps in achieving linguistic diversity on the Internet and overcoming the global digital divide in countries like Mongolia. Furthermore, this chapter explores how a post-communist political setting, aid dependency, and international organizations influence Internet development. The analysis of in-depth interviews provides nuanced explanation of the socialist legacy that is traced in institutional routines, people’s attitudes, and social practices.

Streszczenie:
Empirical evidence suggests that communication among deaf individuals is easier than it is in spoken languages. However, this procedure has not been thoroughly examined in peculiar situations such as police interrogation. This study, like a few others (Russell, 2002; McCay and Miller, 2005) takes a linguistic approach to investigate the challenges that arise when police interview members of the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. This is with the base for highlighting their potential real-world implications, thereby providing mitigative mechanisms. Drawing on Rock and Katz's traditions, the study uses ethnography (a hallmark–qualitative research) to gather the views of sign language users from the Deaf Federation of South Africa and police officers who do not share a language. The objectives of the study are a) to determine the challenges that arise when deaf and hard-of-hearing people report criminal incidents to the police, b) to establish how these challenges impact evidential value in the police report, and c) to determine the possible strategies (if any) that can be adopted to extenuate these issues. Papers such as this are significant in that they generate spinoffs on how the government, through policies and practice, take issues of language development seriously to mitigate the circumstances of possible marginalisation.

Streszczenie:
Medical communication training is being challenged to meet the demands of a more internationalized world. As a result, interdisciplinary simulation-based education is designed to advance clinical skill development, specifically in doctor-patient interactions. The Standardized Patient Program has been applied in American Medical Schools since the 1960s, implementing patient profiles based on authentic cases. At the University of Pécs, Medical School in Hungary, this model is being adapted to facilitate improving patient-interviewing, problem-solving, and medical reporting skills. The interdisciplinary program operates in Hungarian, German and English languages, utilizing actors to perform as simulated patients under the close observation of medical specialists and linguists. This innovative course is designed to train students to successfully collect patient histories while navigating medical, linguistic, emotional, and socio-cultural complexities of patients. Experts in medicine and language assess student performance, offering feedback and providing individualized training that students might improve their professional and communicative competencies. This paper examines how this interdisciplinary course provides valuable opportunities for more efficient patient-oriented communication practices. Through responding to medical emergencies, miscommunications, and conflicts in a safe environment, medical students prepare to deal with a diverse patient context, that more qualified and empathetic health personnel may be employed throughout clinics worldwide. Streszczenie:
In the past two decades, various CAE technologies and tools have been developed for design, development and specification of the graphical user interface (GUI) of consumer products both in and outside the automotive industry. The growing trend of deploying speech interfaces by automotive manufacturers and the resulting usage of speech requires that the work be extended to speech interface modeling — an area where both technologies and methodologies are lacking. This paper presents our recent work aimed at developing a speech interface integrated with an existing GUI modeling system. A multi-contour seat was utilized as the testbed for the work. Our prototype allows one to adjust the multi-contour seat with a touchscreen GUI, a steering wheel mounted button coupled with an instrument cluster display, or a speech interface. The speech interface modeling began with an initial language model, which was developed by interviewing both the experts and novice users. The interview yielded a base corpus and necessary linguistic information for an initial speech grammar model and dialog strategy. After the module was developed it was integrated into the exiting GUI modeling system, in a way that the human voice is treated as a standard input for the system, similar to a press on the touchscreen. The multimodal prototype was used for two customer clinics. In each clinic, we asked a subject to adjust the multi-contour seat using different modalities, including the touchscreen, steering wheel mounted buttons, and the speech interface. We collected both objective and subjective data, including task completion time and customer feedback. Based on the clinic results, we refined both the language model and dialogue strategy. Our work has proven effective for developing a speech-centric, multimodal human machine interface.

Streszczenie:
Barriers in teaching are defined as all nuisances between the factors of the teaching process. Nuisances hamper the teaching process and affect the quality of educational communication and learning outcomes. The information won't become a part of student's knowledge, because he/she can't imagine it and understand it. Overcoming communicational barriers is everyone's need and obligation, this particularly applies to the people who are responsible for establishing the effective communication system. Depending on the criteria, barriers are classified as psychological, linguistic, educational, social, economic, technical and other barriers. Teaching in general, and the teaching of computer science can be organized and therefore studied in terms of cybernetic didactic theory, in other words, system's theory and communication models. In the teaching of Computer Science, educational barriers are in the form of complex, too extensive and outdated textbooks, as well as unavailable actual technical literature. The conclusions of the paper are derived from the research conducted on students from high and technical schools in Vojvodina. The sample includes high schools in several towns, while the pilot study additionally includes elementary schools. As independent appraisers, students of the University of Novi Sad give their opinion about educational barriers in high schools. In computer science teaching, several types of barriers were detected by students' evaluations and assessments based on interviewing techniques. The detected language barriers have low intensity, they permeate all other barriers: educational, psychological, technical, ergonomic, socioeconomic, and they vary depending on the demographic characteristics of the respondents. This paper points to the language barriers in teaching computer science, and also in IT education through systems theory and communication processes. Data were analyzed using statistical methods. For determining variables' interrelation, the multiple-regression factor analyses by Gutman-Kaiser criterion was applied.
