Abstract. In this article, the degree of representativeness of the examples (pairs of lexical units) which illustrate antonymous relations in the English language has been determined, utilizing the method of linguistic interviewing. The article presents the procedure and the results of the psycholinguistic experiment conducted. The peculiarities of the method of linguistic interviewing as a type of psycholinguistic experiment have been defined. A selection of antonymous pairs provided by leading linguists in the area of lexical semantics as illustrative examples in thirteen English-language linguistic works (monographs, textbooks and linguistic encyclopaedias) serves as the material for the experiment. All of the 101 respondents are scholars in the field of linguistics (Candidates (Ph.D.) and Doctors of Philological Sciences, as well as postgraduate students from the higher educational establishments of Ukraine), and are native speakers of Ukrainian, English being their first foreign language. In the experiment, the respondents were to identify which pairs of lexical items given in the list illustrate the relation of antonymy. After analyzing the results of linguistic interviewing, we were able to determine the pairs of antonyms with the highest and the lowest degrees of representativeness. The research demonstrated that gradable and complementary antonyms, mainly adjectives, have the highest degree of representativeness. In addition, we identified certain correlations with the results of linguistic interviewing conducted earlier, the respondents being linguistics scholars, including university and college professors, who are native speakers of English from five English-speaking countries.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the communication strategies employed between investigators and detained individuals during interrogations, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the linguistic interactions in this particular context. The theoretical framework is based on Julia Oglesby's (2010) linguistics and investigative interviewing and Eric Shepherd's (2018) conversation management approach in investigative interviewing. The research adopts a qualitative methodology, involving detailed analysis of actual interrogations between investigators and detainees. The data comprises recordings and transcripts of these dialogues. The conversations are analyzed from a linguistic and communication strategy perspective, focusing on language usage, question structures, and persuasive techniques. The study will provide valuable insights into the dynamics of communication during interrogations, identifying effective and ineffective strategies, as well as their impact on the outcomes of the interrogations. Ultimately, this research contributes to a better understanding of linguistic interactions in the context of interrogations, potentially improving interrogation skills and methods, and ensuring justice and efficiency in the legal process.

Cognitive interviewing (CI) has emerged as a key qualitative method for the pretesting and evaluation of self-report survey questionnaires. This article defines CI, describes its key features, and outlines the data analysis techniques that are commonly used. The authors then consider recent extensions of cognitive testing to the cross-cultural survey research realm, where the major practical objectives are: (1) to facilitate inclusion of a range of cultural and linguistic groups and (2) for purposes of comparative analysis, to produce survey questionnaire items that exhibit comparability of measurement, across groups. Challenges presented by this extension to the cross-cultural and multilingual areas are discussed. Finally, the authors introduce the articles contained within the current special issue of Field Methods (2011), which endeavor to apply cognitive testing in specific cross-cultural survey projects, and to both identify and suggest solutions to the unique problems that face questionnaire designers and researchers more generally, in the practice of survey pretesting and evaluation methods as these endeavor to cover the sociocultural spectrum.

In interviewing witnesses, the Cognitive Interviewing (CI) technique has become an international benchmark with the potential to significantly reduce coercive tactics in police interviews. However, this requires the adaptation of CI to new languages, cultures and legal systems. This article demonstrates that such adaptation is a more complex exercise than merely translating the training manuals. It proposes an evidence-based translation procedure known as the Delphi method using rounds of questionnaires with experts in relevant fields. It demonstrates transparently the process of adapting the CI instructions to non-English-speaking countries using an example from Indonesia. Importantly, the proposed method takes into account the pragma-linguistic context of police interviews in Indonesia. This article provides a road map for adapting investigative interviewing to culturally and linguistically diverse international communities required by the implementation of the 2021 United Nations Declaration of ‘The Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information Gathering’.

Streszczenie:
In the modern linguistic literature, without taking into account new qualitative changes in contemporary syntactic theory, the theory of text science and speech activity, the view of the consideration of punctuation as a separate section of syntax still prevails. If the linguistic environment changes and the language has the ability to adapt to changes in real life, changes that are observed in a particular speech practice must first be seen as a new but standard, communicative, and pragmatic phenomenon (pauses, deviations). After all, speech and language are interrelated phenomena. Both are two other units of the system. From this point of view, changes made in the syntactic structure of speech should be recognized as consequences of non-verbal communication in non-oral (written) communication. Despite the recognition of the importance of many definitions and studies presented for punctuation, the generally recognized values of textbooks, the emergence of various additional clarifications, and changes relating to punctuation indicate the need to take into account the qualitative changes occurring in the practice of punctuation marks and punctuation-graphic means. In particular, the results of the survey among students clarify this opinion.

The paper provides a linguistic analysis of political slogans. The corpus material includes political slogans of this year‘s general elections held on April 3, 2022. The aforementioned syntactic constructions are classified into two categories – slogans with a predicate constituent and slogans without a predicate constituent. Using qualitative methodology, we endeavor to provide a thorough description of excerpted linguistic units in order to determine their stylistic and pragmatic potential. The analysis concludes that the dominant feature of these linguistic expressions are stylistic figures of repetition – alliteration, assonance, and consonance – but in some instances, other marketing strategies have been implemented that contribute to the retention of statements. Nevertheless, we suggest that interviewing native speakers would provide a better insight into the pragmatic nature of the examined material.

It is now well accepted that working in research teams that span universities, jurisdictions and countries can be rewarding and economically prudent. To this end, investigators collaborate in the pursuit of knowledge to address human and societal problems and translate results into local and global contexts. This implies that investigators need to develop study instruments that are fit for purpose and strategically manage issues arising from geographical, linguistic and cultural diversity. A proven method is cognitive interviewing to pre-test the study materials to ensure clarity and relevance in the study population. This paper describes the steps taken to increase the methodological reliability of study instruments through the use of cognitive interviewing and argues this technique should be a standard step in instrument development.

AbstractFocused as we are on uncovering how language works, many linguists are less cognizant of how the communicative strategies we employ in our knowledge-gathering activities impact the language users, identities, and communities we connect with and learn from. This autoethnographic essay, offered as a critical, introspective and analytical account by a U.S.-based, African American woman researcher, unfolds across three scenes of embedded ethnographic research in Micronesia and Tanzania—ocean-facing nations separated by a distance of more than 12,000 kilometers. Each scene's storytelling and dialogue—among users of Pohnpeian and Nukuoro in Micronesia, and users of Korean and Swahili in Tanzania—depicts how competing ideas about the value of marginalized languages surface within the talk of the research interview through allusions to socioracial power and linguistic capital. The essay concludes with a discussion of how a shift toward multilingual, multi-person interviewing can expand and deepen the insights of language-focused research.

The research is carried out in the direction of the actual modern science – gender linguistics and reveals the linguistic, psychological and ethnospecific features of the communicative style of American TV hosts. The author develops an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems at the intersection of Humanities: linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, genderology, journalism. As a result of the linguistic analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that the male style of interviewing Larry King is characterized by restraint, official style, clear structure of the interview; Oprah Winfrey’s speech style is characterized by emotionality, openness, characteristic of the conversational style of communication. However, the revealed gender features of the analyzed interviews do not affect the success of achieving the goals set by the interviewer. The presenter receives information through the use of psycholinguistic techniques. The result was a success regardless of the chosen tactics of negotiating in the analyzed interviews.

This study examined and compared results from two questionnaire pretesting methods (i.e., behavioral coding and cognitive interviewing [CI]) to assess systematic measurement bias in survey questions for adult smokers across six countries (United States, Australia, Uruguay, Mexico, Malaysia, and Thailand). Protocol development and translation involved multiple bilingual partners in each linguistic/cultural group. The study was conducted with convenience samples of 20 adult smokers in each country. Behavioral coding and CI methods produced similar conclusions regarding measurement bias for some questions; however, CI was more likely to identify potential response errors than behavioral coding. Coordinated qualitative pretesting of survey questions (or postsurvey evaluation) is feasible across cultural groups and can provide important information on comprehension and comparability. The CI appears to be a more robust technique than behavioral coding, although combinations of the two might be even better.

Purpose This article discusses the clinical utility of ethnographic interviewing as an approach for capitalizing on the life knowledge and skills of a broad range of individuals, with varied cultural backgrounds, during clinical practice. An overview of ethnographic interviewing procedures, a description of the Funds of Knowledge framework, and its application are presented. Conclusions As the ethnic and racial composition of the general population in the United States shifts, speech-language pathologists and audiologists can expect this to be reflected in the ethno-racial profiles of the clients and families they serve. To continue to deliver the highest quality of speech, language, and/or hearing services, it will become increasingly important for clinicians to engage in ongoing practices that develop and expand their competence and understanding of the cultural and linguistic needs and values of each client and family. This article proposes that ethnographic interviewing, grounded in a Funds of Knowledge framework, offers a means for clinicians to discover the knowledge and resources that clients and families have acquired through their everyday life experiences. Notably, it is suggested that, when viewed as valuable assets, such experiences can significantly contribute to the delivery of culturally competent clinical services and potentially help decrease biases in clinical decision making.

Abstract The aim of investigative interviews is to gather comprehensive and reliable information from suspects, offenders, victims and witnesses through questioning. Research on questioning during police interviews has mainly explored question types and question approaches when interviewing adults and children. This paper is concerned with so far unexplored aspects of police interviewing, that is the employment of mitigating and aggravating linguistic devices in questions and statements and their pragmatic effects. The corpus consists of six police interviews with suspects of crime. Mitigation and aggravation strategies were extracted and a total of eighty-two instances were found, analysed and classified into a categorisation taxonomy which was designed to ascertain the types and functions of mitigation and aggravation devices. The findings reveal that more mitigation than aggravation strategies were used in police questioning and statements during the interviews. Mitigation was found to be used not only as a device for alleviating or attenuating, but also as a strategy to build rapport between suspects and police officers.

Abstract The Eastern Massachusetts Life and Language project was in its planning stages when the COVID-19 pandemic began to make headway in the United States in 2020. We contribute to the conversation about conducting linguistic fieldwork during a major social upheaval by providing a description of our shift to virtual methodologies, which include utilizing Instagram for participant recruitment and Zoom for conducting sociolinguistic interviews. Virtual data collection remains underexplored, as there has never been a widespread need for such practices until the recent lockdowns resulting from the pandemic. Likewise, social media appears to be underutilized as a recruitment tool in linguistic fieldwork. Nevertheless, it is effective in producing a heterogeneous participant sample in a short amount of time. We are delighted to engage in discussions about the effects of virtual recruitment and data collection on linguistic fieldwork and the data itself. We offer a description of our pivots to virtual recruitment and interviewing and the racial justice initiatives that become achievable because of these changes. We hope this contribution is beneficial to researchers looking to incorporate virtual methodologies into their research program.

The 16-volume "Reeks Nederlandse Dialect-atlassen" - RND (Atlases of Dutch Dialects Series; 1925-1976), which was started by Edgar Blanquaert, is due of the major sources of the study of linguistic variety in Dutch and Frisian. Very positive evaluations have already been made by researchers in the field of linguistic geography. In the present contribution, it will be shown that also from a sociolinguistic point of view the RND can be considered a distinctly progressive project. This is clear from the method of fieldwork chosen (personal interviewing; narrow phonetic transcription; original data on display maps), from the choice of location (particular attention for the urban character) and from the selection criteria for informers (several informers per location, great attention for middle-class speakers and relatively young speakers). The sociolinguistic character is strengthened by the additional information in the section Taaitoestand' (socio-linguistic situation), in which a brief sociolinguistic description of the location studied is given. The information to the following aspects: the period during which fieldwork took place, the fieldworkers, Flanders versus the Netherlands, local variation and, finally, social variation.

The article presents practical ways to harmonize English teaching by balancing linguistic, sociolinguistic competences with the pragmatic one at primary school. We employ psycholinguistic approach to facilitate close to real life communication in the classroom. The PURPOSE of this paper is to reveal an experimental psycholinguistic shift from prioritizing linguistic with the elements of sociolinguistic competences to a more balanced model of teaching speaking young primary learners, which resembles natural communication and includes pragmatic competence too. METHODS: The paper presents the results of an action research carried out among 9-10-year old schoolchildren from 3 primary schools. During the research, we turned to interviewing teachers and learners, used questionnaires and observation. We employed analysis and experiment during the intervention. The RESULTS reveal students’ interactive problems while speaking in English realized in their bodies, articulatory blockages predetermined by emotional and psychological tension as well as the lack of appropriate language and pragmatic skills. In CONCLUSIONS, we have developed a range of recommendations with examples to facilitate teacher’s work with primary students’ pragmatic competence along with linguistic and sociocultural ones

The paper presents the results of a psycholinguistic experiment aimed to identify the general characteristics and national-cultural characteristics of linguo-cognitive categorization and conceptualization of the linguistic axiological spheres GOOD, EVIL, TRUTH, LIE in Russian, Ukrainian, British, and American linguistic cultures. A total of 830 respondents of both gen-ders, different social status, and education levels from Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain, and the USA participated in the experiment. The psycholinguistic experiment involved the following stages: setting the goal and objectives of the experiment, determining the timing of its imple-mentation, formulating the expected results, compiling the task, interviewing the respondents, and analyzing the results, with tasks, deadlines, and expected results specified for each stage. At the preparatory stage, the questionnaires were developed in Russian, Ukrainian, and Eng-lish to be completed by the respondents. At the next stage, the associative reactions obtained were processed, and conclusions were formulated. The linguistic axiological spheres of GOOD, EVIL, TRUTH, LIE in the structure of the linguistic sphere of MAN were found to be universal in Russian, Ukrainian, British, and American linguistic cultures, with specific dif-ferences in linguo-cognitive categorization and conceptualization being associated with the cultural, historical, socio-economic development, the political structure of different countries. This fact explains the slight differences in the language representation of the outside world by the representatives of Russian, Ukrainian, British, and American linguo-cultures.

The article is devoted to the metacritical component in the scientific heritage of Yu. S. Stepanov (1930–2012) and its significant presence in modern scientific research. Metacriticism is understood as a method of an analytical revision of estab-lished linguistic concepts, opinions, and assessments related to iconic personalities and their views. This method is included in the tools of narrative linguistic historiography, along with the study of the full linguistic heritage corpus created by specific authors in a strictly chronological order, identifying a broad scientific context, ex-ploring the intellectual discourse of the era, a detailed acquaintance with the linguistic journals and collections of the period of interest, restoring the scientist’s library according to his / her writings, reconstructing his / her conceptual chronology, interviewing eyewitnesses of scientific events, students and opponents of key figures in the specific scientific school, etc. In this sense, metacriticism significantly expands its original boundaries as defined in the middle of the 19th century in the course of revising I. Kant’s critical ideas, and is represented in the works by Yu. S. Stepanov with his arguments about the accuracy of interpretations of classical concepts, terms and categories related to the philosophy of language in Russian and foreign scientific publications.

Introduction: Relevance of the research is defined by the need to design new methods aimed at enhancing learners’ grammar proficiency, which could meet the requirements of new educational standards in relation to graduates’ communicative competence. A possible reason for graduates’ inability to successfully communicate in the foreign language is ineffective traditional grammar-teaching methods still used at non-linguistic universities. Teaching grammar in line with the communicative approach could help avoid too formal a procedure typical of traditional approaches, and be instrumental in increasing the speaking practice time. The study is aimed at designing a method of using the interviewing activity borrowed from speaking club sessions in order to work on grammar skills in classes of non-linguists with L2 levels varying from Elementary to Advanced.Research materials and methods included analysing a pool of relevant publications, testing the method proposed in four groups of non-linguists with levels of English varied from Elementary to Advanced, interviewing the students in the target groups, interpreting the survey results. The Research results: interviewing activity as a communicative method to teach grammar is successfully applied at Lobachevsky University. Practical recommendations are provided.Discussion and conclusion. First, the proposed method raises learners’ interest to the subject of the foreign language. Second, it lowers the level of foreign language anxiety and increases foreign language enjoyment. Third, it treats L2 as a means to receive and exchange information, which develops learners’ social interaction skills.

In this study, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach. The study relied on interviewing some professors at the institute, observation, and documentation of all data. The researchers arrived at several results, including: The types of linguistic overlap that occurred during students’ conversations in Arabic at the Al-Amien Islamic Boarding School Prenduan of Sumenep Madura were represented by morphological overlap from the Madurese language to the Arabic language, morphological overlap from the Indonesian language to the Arabic language, semantic overlap from the Madurese language to the Arabic language, and semantic overlap from the Indonesian language to the Arabic language. Al-Amien Islamic Boarding School Prenduan of Sumenep Madura employed methods for teaching the Arabic language through daily conversation expressions to rectify linguistic overlaps among students. This approach was documented in booklets authored by KH. Mohammad Marzuki Ma’ruf, who held the primary responsibility for Arabic language instruction. The booklets included: A book on correcting errors in the Language Week Arabic, a book of terminology and error correction, a book of common terms, a book of daily conversation, and a book of daily terms and methods. From these mentioned books, materials for the error correction program for linguistic interference were extracted, and activities were conducted throughout the Al-Amien Islamic Boarding School, encompassing both formal and informal activities spanning twenty-four hours.

In their early presence that immigrant used English (Eng) and Indonesia language (IL) formally to communicate with IOM staff, UNHCR staff, among immigrant, and out of them, but when they have access to live for a while in Makassar, they interact with Makassar people freely and they use various languages such as Makassar language (ML), Indonesian language by Makassar Malay language (MML) as the trend of Makassar dialect, or sometimes used English as their language code. MML was mostly used compared to other language by those immigrants in some public area in Makassar. The using of MML by immigrant was a linguistic adaptation to the target language.

This study uses the tools of corpus linguistics to investigate ascending kinship terminology in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle Rockies, a collection of interviews gathered in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming as part of a dialectological survey of the American West. Relying in part on the framework of Dahl and Koptjevskaja-Tamm (2001), particularly with respect to their notion of a parental kin prototype, the study examines lexical and grammatical variation in the use of terms for parents and grandparents in different interviewing contexts in an effort to identify patterns in these distributions. The study finds important quantitative differences in the distribution of mother and father, as well as differences in the grammatical behavior of these and other kinship variants. While these results provide some support for a parental kin prototype, they also suggest the benefits that survey data collected within a variationist framework offer such a prototype, both with respect to the counterexamples to broad generalizations that such datasets inevitably include as well as the variable patterns that often emerge from such data that might go unobserved using formal methods.

The goal of the research is a transdisciplinary reconstruction of the hybrid subject of linguistics. The result of the research is the distinction between the local onomasticon as a linear list of words, separated from spatial and temporal contexts, and the onomastic suite formation. Transdisciplinarity as a methodological principle of research is represented in the actualization of the cenological approach. The concept onomastic suite formation was coined to linguistically explain the excessive derived groupings of different-frequency onyms related to the parent onym and sharing the common cultural-historical context. The onomastic suite formation is interpreted as a dynamic subsystem of semiocoenosis, the elements of which are formally heterogeneous, loosely coupled from the linguistic point of view, but they share spatial and temporal parameters forming homogeneous social-historical contents associated with psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and linguoculturological factors. The results are based on the analysis of a sample of 4000 onomastic units, which was generated and interpreted in an “all-humanities key” using an integrated methodology (including contextual analysis, method of vocabulary definitions, interviewing, modeling, introspection).

Current veterinary communication skills training often focuses on the strategies necessary to successfully transfer information and promote shared decision making rather than inspiring client motivation to engage in behaviour change(s). One evidence-based communication methodology with a specific focus on enhancing conversations about change is Motivational Interviewing (MI), which is perceived by veterinarians to be highly relevant to their profession. We examined whether veterinarians who experienced brief (4–5 hours) MI training (BMIT) were able to change their communication behaviours to be more MI consistent. Fourteen veterinarians recorded 31 veterinary herd health consultations before (n = 15) and after (n = 16) BMIT to allow pre-post intervention analysis of veterinarian and farmer verbal behaviour. Additionally, using a sequential linguistic analysis of 3885 veterinarian-farmer communication events within these consultations, the influence of veterinarians’ verbal behaviours on farmers’ response language was explored. Analysis of veterinary consultations undertaken before and after BMIT revealed that veterinarians changed their communication style to be more consistent with the MI methodology, including more use of reflection statements, a more empathic and partnership-oriented consultation style and greater emphasis on clients’ own language in favour of change goals. In response, farmers contributed more to the conversation and discussed more herd health-related changes. Sequential linguistic analysis suggested that following a veterinarian emphasising something positive about the farmer (e.g. efforts, strengths), seeking collaboration or emphasising farmer choice, farmers were subsequently more likely to express arguments in favour of change (‘Change Talk’), especially phrases indicative of commitment. This study offers the first evidence of the potential value of a BMIT experience to enhance veterinary communication skills, although conscious and disciplined use of MI principles, strategies and Spirit–an ethos of compassion, acceptance, partnership and evocation—requires longer and more complex training. Further studies examining the longevity and consistency of these verbal behaviour changes following BMIT are required.

There are several interpretations of code-switching. Some teachers encourage EFL learners to apply it as they believe it helps them acquire and comprehend the target language. This study investigates in three different settings the code-switching behaviors of 10 Saudi students, the association between the participants' degree of English proficiency and their employment of code-switching. It also investigates how the context affects code-switching behaviors by examining the various types of code-switch as well as how code-switchers perceive it. The study's qualitative methodology involved interviewing the participants and use of checklist to analyze their responses. Results show the participants with high English proficiency levels, did not like to switch codes. Additionally, while the minority of participants claimed they did not code-switch in the Saudi context, the remaining individuals claimed they did so in each of the three settings. However, the study found that among the participants, one word (noun) was the form of code-switch that was used the most frequently. Finally, the study demonstrated that even though all individuals occasionally switched codes, they all had unfavorable perceptions of it. The study suggests that teachers should regulate code-switching in different contexts.

This study aims to examine names and naming in online thrift shops in Indonesia based on linguistic and anthropological perspectives. Names and naming as essential parts of language convey representation of an individual, object, places, etc. Names also have three categories in anthropological perspective, such as name and identity, roles of name, and name and culture. To pursue the goal of this study, qualitative descriptive method together with linguistic and anthropological perspectives was used. Next, purposive sampling technique was used to collect names of online thrift shops in Indonesia which have more than 500 followers on Instagram as criteria. In total, there were 50 names of online thrift shops in Indonesia collected. Interviewing all of the owners of online thrift shops selected then was conducted. The results showed that the owners of the selected online thrift shops have many considerations and reasons before choosing the suitable name for their small business, such as self-representation and social relationship with others. Those considerations represent the owner’s self-identity. In conclusion, names of online thrift shops reveal an identity of the owner as well as the role of those names in the society.

Within research on language and gender, a classical standpoint is to assume a straightforward relation between gender on the one hand and social and linguistic practises on the other. Men are assumed to speak and act in one way - competing and construcdng power hierarchies - whereas women are assumed to aim at solidarity and mutual support in their social and linguistic practises. In this paper, which is based on a study of job interviews, I suggest that the classical standpoint has, in fact, much to offer. The study of job interviews confirms one of the classical hypotheses: the men among the job applicants talk more than the women. Furthermore, the men gain power by talking more - the study also shows that talkative applicants are more successful in job interviews. The practise of job interview seems biased in men's favour. However, the study of job interviews also shows that women and men are not homogenous groups: some women talk a lot and get a job, some men talk little and do not get a job. It seems that there are more to job interviews and to social and linguistical practises than construction and reconstruction of a simple binary gender system. Through qualitative discourse analyses I suggest that there are other determinants at play than gender in the binary sense. I analyse two j ob interviews with female applicants and demonstrate that linguistic practises vary substantially within one gender. My explanation is based on social theory: the two women are socialised differently and therefore make use of language in different ways. Their language practises are enactings of habitus and symbolic capital as Pierre Bourdieu would put it. And here another bias emerges: the practise of job interviewing also seems biased in favour of applicants with a middle class as opposed to a working class background.

AbstractTo sustain competitiveness in contemporary, fast-paced markets, organizations increasingly focus on innovating their business models to enhance current value propositions or to explore novel sources of value creation. However, business model innovation is a complex task, characterized by shifting characteristics in terms of uncertainty, data availability and its impact on decision making. To cope with such challenges, business model evaluation is advocated to make sense of novel business models and to support decision making. Key performance indicators (KPIs) are frequently used in business model evaluation to structure the performance assessment of these models and to evaluate their strategic implications, in turn aiding business model decision making. However, given the shifting characteristics of the innovation process, the application and effectiveness of KPIs depend significantly on how such KPIs are defined. The techniques proposed in the existing literature typically generate or use quantitatively oriented KPIs, which are not well-suited for the early phases of the business model innovation process. Therefore, following a design science research methodology, we have developed a novel method for defining business model KPIs, taking into account the characteristics of the innovation process, offering holistic support toward decision making. Building on theory on linguistic summarization, we use a set of structured templates to define qualitative KPIs that are suitable to support early-phase decision making. In addition, we show how these KPIs can be gradually quantified to support later phases of the innovation process. We have evaluated our method by applying it in two real-life business cases, interviewing 13 industry experts to assess its utility.

The act of lying and its detection have raised interest in many fields, from the legal system to our daily lives. Considering that testimonies are commonly based on linguistic parameters, natural language processing, a research field concerned with programming computers to process and analyse natural language texts or speech, is a topic of interest on this front. This study aimed to examine the linguistic styles of simulated deception and true testimonies collected with the aim of studying witness memory. Study participants were asked to act as a witness of a crime by retelling the story they had just read. Cognitive interviewing techniques were used to collect testimony under two conditions: truth and simulated deception. A sample of 48 participants volunteered to participate in the study. Analyses of the linguistic indicators and content were carried out. Specifically, we performed a comparison of testimonies of the same participant by condition to analyse the variation between (i) lexical and (ii) linguistic features and (iii) content and speech characteristics (disfluencies) depending on the narrative condition. Concerning lexical properties, adjectives were the most-varying grammatical category between truthful and deceptive testimonies. Furthermore, in the linguistic analysis, we observed that truthful testimonies were generally longer than deceptive ones in terms of the number of words and sentences and also characterised by more articulated sentence structures, and these differences were also statistically significant. Regarding the analysis of the content, cognitive criteria (details) and admitting lack of memory were more present in truthful statements. By providing an objective measure, these results are of interest in developing NLP tools for assessing the credibility of testimonies in forensics.

The Arabic language that Malay learns as a second language belongs to a language group other than that of the Malay language, which is the mother tongue of the Arabic language learners in the Malay archipelago. It is well known that the Linguistic Library was filled with many studies comparing the two languages at the linguistic level, and no study compares them to the cultural level. Therefore, this pioneering study was concerned with a comparison between the two cultural languages. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach; comparing the Malay and Arabic cultures and describing the differences between them in this field. The method of interviewing Malay students who represented the archipelago region and Arab Arabic teachers was also used to identify the most important problems arising from the different cultures that confront the two parties in Arabic teaching. The findings show that the Malay culture was greatly influenced by the Arab-Islamic culture. But there are differences between cultural manifestation in Arabic and Malay languages that, in turn, give some problems in Arabic teaching and learning in the Malay Archipelago.

The results of this study indicate that all forms of discriminatory behavior both from classmates and teachers can affect student achievement. So that negative behavior also produces negative responses such as fear, anxiety, and separation so that it limits and restrains student participation in the learning process.
