The paper focuses on implications of the EU accession for competitiveness of New Member States, and specifically, Lithuania. Basing on a case study analysis of internationally trading Lithuanian company, effects on its performance, caused by European trade regulation, are being revealed. Authors raise a question whether the EU accession facilitated international trade for newcomers, and if not, what reasons conditioned unfavourable effects. Subjective and objective factors impacting business activity in the after-transition years are being considered.

As countries aspire to attain EU membership, they must undergo a comprehensive process of harmonization with EU norms and standards. This paper explores the relationship between EU integration and the erosion of sovereignty from the perspective of candidatemember states, analyzing the underlying dynamics and implications with a particular focus on the transfer of decision-making powers from the national to the supranational level. In May 2024, the Georgian parliament adopted the law known as the “foreign agent law”, which was followed by a barrage of Western attacks on the Georgian ruling party. The US imposed sanctions on Georgian Dream parliamentarians and Germany effectively froze Georgia’s EU accession. The Hungarian government, on the other hand, has expressed its support for the Tbilisi administration and vetoed a unified EU statement of condemnation on Georgia. However, even the Presidency of the EU Council is not enough to launch accession negotiations, thus Budapest can only offer alternative support to the EU

Bilateral disputes between European Union member states and candidate countries are one of the key obstacles to EU enlargement. They have been plaguing the EU accession process ever since the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent border dispute between EU member Slovenia and candidate country Croatia which then ensued. More recently we have the case of North Macedonia. It became a candidate country in 2005 but ever since, its accession negotiations have been bogged down by endless bilateral disputes. In the aftermath of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, enlargement has shot to the top of the EU’s agenda. However, the accession policy is hardly fit for purpose. With EU Member States now exerting control over the enlargement process – exploiting it for their own benefits as and when necessary – they undermine both the accession principles and general Union objectives, as set out in the Lisbon Treaty. The disjuncture between the enlargement policy and geopolitical realities leaves aspiring states (especially those from Eastern Europe) in a precarious limbo. We offer a set of essential

In the wake of Russia’s full- scale invasion of Ukraine, European Union (EU) member states have taken decisions that have shifted the focus of civilian Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) more firmly to its Eastern Neighbourhood. This shift has raised the geopolitical profile and relevance of civilian CSDP, but it has also increased the stakes. Although civilian CSDP has become more geopolitical, it has not necessarily become more strategic, as decision making and action remain ad hoc and reactive. This raises questions about the EU’s capacity to use civilian CSDP more strategically and
