Microfinance loans have long been associated with relatively high interest rates. There is a wide variation of interest rates charged by microfinance institutions (MFIs) across countries, as well as some dispersion of interest rates across MFIs within the same country. The source of interest rate variation can result from institution specific characteristics such as, average loan size and the composition of female borrowers. The dispersion in prevailing interest rates in the formal financial sector across countries may partially contribute to the variation of microfinance interest rates across

This paper presents quantitative estimates of the indirect cost of financial distress and its determinants. In order to measure the cost, this study estimates the annualized changes in industry-adjusted operation profit and sales from a year before the onset of distress to the resolution year. Using those approaches, the median of indirect financial distress cost is estimated between three and 11 percent annually. To the extent that the direct cost of financial distress reduces reported operating income, the estimated costs are overstated. The simple regressions analysis suggest that the indir

The paper identifies bank-specific determinants of Czech commercial bank efficiency during the period 2000–2012. The paper employs a panel version of a stochastic efficiency frontier model with time variant efficiency to identify the impact of bank size and the structure of bank’s portfolio on the bank’s cost and profit efficiency. The results of the estimation show that bank size has no impact on cost efficiency but it negatively influences the bank’s ability to generate revenue. Cost efficiency increases with deposit-to-assets ratio and profit efficiency increases with loans-to-assets ratio.

To support agriculture, Zimbabwe’s government introduced a Targeted Command Agriculture Programme (TCAP), in terms of which the state provides production inputs like seeds, fertilisers, protection chemicals, and extension services. In turn, the farmer is expected to produce 5 tonnes of maize per hectare for the Grain Marketing Board.
