Abstract Following a series of mass-bleaching events that have seriously degraded coral reefs, notably the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, a common narrative is now dominating the discourse, according to which “the only sure way to save the world’s coral reefs is climate change mitigation”. However, climate change is not a sole stressor. Most coral reefs around the world are threatened by a myriad of local stressors, including overfishing, destructive fishing, untreated sewage, agriculture effluents (nutrients and pesticides), and siltation due to deforestation. Long-distance electrical signals caused by the local action of stressors influence numerous physiological processes in plants including photosynthesis and increase their tolerance to the action of adverse factors. We hypothesized that HESs are related to stressor-induced increases in the hydrostatic pressure in the zone of action of the stressor and follo

Abstract For the first time fracture mechanical properties of scales from wet corrosion were considered with respect to the initiation steps of flow induced localized corrosion (FILC) of steel under conditions of scale forming corrosion processes. Fracture mechanical data for iron carbonate scales from carbon dioxide corrosion, assessed by first principle considerations, were compared with own experimental data in a failure mode diagram which correlates the tendency of scale spalling with scale thickness related critical strains. Inhibitors influence the fracture mechanical properties of corro

This assessment synthesizes information about current and projected climate and related impacts at Martin Van Buren National Historic Park (MAVA) in order to help park stewards understand, plan, and manage for climate change. Working with a group of park managers, scientists, and local stake-holders, six key park resources were identified for assessment herein: Climate, Water quantity, Phenology, Agriculture, Trees, and Cultural resources. Where data was available, this analysis assessed current condition and considered mid-century (2030–2060) and end-of-century (2100) impacts based on a range

Harmful chemicals are typically regulated one at a time. Yet in the real world we are all exposed to multiple harmful chemicals, from the products we use, to pollution sources in our neighborhoods, to legacy pollution in our communities and us. These exposures combine with stressors on health that are often driven by systemic racism and unjust public polici

The SSHAP West Africa Hub brings together academics, humanitarian responders and public health practitioners primarily working in Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone to explore socio-political and historical issues shaping crises, with the intention of enhancing national and humanitarian programmes seeking to reach vulnerable groups. In this landscape paper, we aim to summarise the contextual factors that shape health emergencies and responses to health emergencies in the West Africa region (termed ‘health emergency cycles’). Drawing on examples from Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone, we explore

This research report is a case study on local peace practices within pastoralist communities in Kenya’s Turkana North (a subcounty of Kenya’s Turkana County). While significant existing research and analysis has focused on the concern that pastoralist communities across the African continent may contribute to growing violent conflict—and in particular to violent extremism—this report instead situates these communities within the theoretical framework of “everyday peace.” This framework centers on understanding the myriad ways in which ordinary people in conflict-affected contexts engage in sma

The purpose of this technical note is to develop a conceptual model that describes the critical processes, stressors, and interactions that affect coastal marsh dynamics within the Chesapeake Bay, as identified by subject matter experts, and then link those factors to specific management actions. Managing coastal marshes within Chesapeake Bay involves multiple stakeholders across federal, state, local, and nongovernmental agencies. Reaching consensus among large stakeholder groups can be difficult, since each has their own perspective and requirements for management. Mediated modeling is a tec

The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (HTLN) is a component of the National Park Service’s (NPS) strategy to improve park management through greater reliance on scientific information. The purposes of this program are to design and implement long-term ecological monitoring and provide information for park managers to evaluate the integrity of park ecosystems and better understand ecosystem processes. Concerns over declining surface water quality have led to the development of various monitoring approaches to assess stream water quality. Freshwater streams in network parks are threaten

CO2 leakage from geological storage is considered unlikely from properly selected sites and the potential impacts small when compared to other anthropogenic and natural stressors. However, it is important to predict and understand potential environmental impacts and risks to human health from a range of leak scenarios in order to undertake appropriate monitoring and mitigation necessary to meet both regulatory and societal expectations. Migration of CO2 to the surface, subsurface or into potable water reservoirs poses a risk, and although is predicted to be rare and limited in quantity, cannot

Birds are an important component of park ecosystems. Due to their high body temperature, rapid metabolism, and high ecological position in most food webs, birds are also good indicators of the effects of local and regional ecosystem changes. Patterns in the community composition, distribution, and occurrence of breeding birds provide a metric for assessing ecological integrity and sustainability in southeastern U. S. ecosystems. Further, trends in these attributes in relation to activities occurring at Cumberland Island National Seashore (e.g., management actions, natural disturbance, invasive
