The effects of lung volume and surface forces on airway smooth muscle shortening were studied in isolated perfused rat lungs. The lungs were inflated via the trachea with gas or Krebs solution (n = 12 each) to volumes equivalent to gas inflation pressures of 5 (low), 15 (medium), and 25 (high) cmH2O (n = 4 each). At each volume, two of the four lungs were perfused with methacholine (10(-2) M) and then all were perfused with Formalin for fixation. The amount of smooth muscle shortening present in transverse sections of the airways was determined by comparing the observed outer perimeter of the

During fetal life the lung develops as a liquid-filled structure with low blood flow compared with postnatal life. We studied the effects of liquid expansion of the fetal lung by measuring vascular conductance in perfused lungs in situ and arterial diameters in excised lungs of fetal lambs. Pulmonary vascular conductance invariably rose as the lung was deflated from its initial volume; maximal deflation to residual volume increased conductance 122%. With reexpansion, conductance fell progressively, culminating in cessation of flow at lung volumes of twice the initial volume. These changes pers

Using the parenchymal marker technique, we measured pressure (P)-volume (P-V) curves of regions with volumes of ∼1 cm3 in the dependent caudal lobes of oleic acid-injured dog lungs, during a very slow inflation from P = 0 to P = 30 cmH2O. The regional P-V curves are strongly sigmoidal. Regional volume, as a fraction of volume at total lung capacity, remains constant at 0.4–0.5 for airway P values from 0 to ∼20 cmH2O and then increases rapidly, but continuously, to 1 at P = ∼25 cmH2O. Studies on human infants suggested that thoracic gas volume (TGV) measured at end exhalation may not depict the true TGV and may differ from TGV measured from a series of higher lung volumes and corrected for the volume added. This was explained by gas trapping. If true, we should expect the discrepancy to be more pronounced when functional residual capacity (FRC) and higher lung volumes are measured by gas dilution techniques. We studied lung volumes above FRC by the nitrogen washout technique in 12 spontaneously breathing rhesus monkeys (5.0–11.3 kg wt; 42 compared measurements). Lung volume

The pulmonary circulation, which includes the movement of blood from the heart to the lungs and back, facilitates gas exchange and serves several other functions. It differs from systemic circulation but is crucial for maintaining homeostasis. Pulmonary vessels protect against thrombi and emboli, metabolize vasoactive hormones, and act as a blood reservoir. Hemodynamically, pulmonary circulation is characterized by high flow, low pressure, and low resistance. Pulmonary vascular resistance adjusts to changes in cardiac output and lung volume, impacting gas exchange efficiency. Hypoxia can induc

Streszczenie:
Noninvasive measurement of mechanical wave motion (sound and vibration) in the lungs may be of diagnostic value, as it can provide information about the mechanical properties of the lungs, which in turn are affected by disease and injury. In this study, two theoretical models of the vibro-acoustic behavior of the lung parenchyma are compared: (1) a Biot theory of poroviscoelasticity and (2) a simplified “bubble swarm” model for compression wave behavior. A “slow” compression wave speed predicted by the Biot theory formulation agrees well with the bubbly swarm theory in both analytical calculat

Certain serious illnesses, including pneumonia and the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), can lead to fluid accumulation in the lung and obstruction of the small pulmonary airways. Fluid in the lungs inhibits gas exchange and patients may require mechanical ventilation, which can expose the lung to mechanical stresses that exacerbate the existing injury and result in additional fluid accumulation. Recent improvements in ventilation protocols (e.g. low lung volume ventilation) have improved ARDS treatment, but mortality rates remain high (30–40%).

Detailed knowledge of the fate of aerosols in the lung is essential in understanding the effect of exposure to airborne particulate matter and infectious agents and in assessing the efficiency of inhaled drug therapy. Detailed, yet non-invasive, studies of peripheral aerosol deposition are almost impossible in humans. Thus, understanding the fate of aerosols in the lung requires the use of computational and/or animal models in which more invasive techniques can be used. In this study, using magnetic resonance (MR) images of rat lungs, we (1) built three dimensional (3D) models of the airway tr

Respiratory motion causes either over-dose to the tumor or under-dose to the organ at risk in radiation therapy treatment for cancer. In order to characterize the motion, a nonlinear finite element model of the lungs has been developed based on 4D computed tomography (CT) data of a cancer patient with a tumor in the right lung. Pressure-volume (PV) curve data was applied to deform the model in real time. Realistic results are obtained when contact conditions are imposed between the pleura and the thoracic cavity.

The goal of a QIBA Profile is to achieve a repeatable and useful level of performance for measures of lung density from quantitative CT using the RA-950 HU and Perc15 biomarkers of emphysema. Please see Appendix C for more detailed information on the calculation of and rationale for RA-950 HU and Perc15 as the biomarkers of choice. The Claim (Section 2) describes the performance in terms of bias and precision of RA-950 HU and Perc15 for detecting change in lung density. The Activities (Section 3) describe how to generate RA-950 HU and Perc15 for longitudinal studies of the change in lung densi
