ABSTRACT Nuts have been identified as a vector for salmonellosis. The objective of this project was to estimate the prevalence and contamination level of Salmonella in raw tree nuts (cashews, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, and walnuts) at retail markets in the United States. A total of 3,656 samples of six types of tree nuts were collected from different types of retail stores and markets nationwide between October 2014 and October 2015. These samples were analyzed using a modified version of the Salmonella culture method from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Bacteriologi

Macadamia has increasing commercial importance in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. However, the toxic compound hydrogen cyanide (HCN) released from the hydrolysis of cyanogenic compounds in Macadamia causes a safety risk. In this study, optimum conditions for the maximum release of HCN from Macadamia were evaluated. Direct headspace analysis of HCN above Macadamia plant parts (flower, leaves, nuts, and husks) was carried out using selected ion flow tube–mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). The cyanogenic glycoside dhurrin and total cyanide in the extracts were analyzed using HPLC-MS

Background Macadamia is a true dicotyledonous plant that thrives in a mild, humid, low wind environment. It is cultivated and traded internationally due to its high-quality nuts thus, has significant development prospects and scientific research value. However, information on the genetic resources of Macadamia spp. remains scanty. Results The mitochondria (mt) genomes of three economically important Macadamia species, Macadamia integrifolia, M. ternifolia and M. tetraphylla, were assembled through the Illumina sequencing platform. The results showed that each species has 71 genes, including 42

Macadamia nuts are considered a high-quality oil crop worldwide. To date, the lipid diversity and the genetic factors that mediate storage lipid biosynthesis in Macadamia ternifolia are poorly known. Here, we performed a comprehensive transcriptomic and lipidomic data analysis to understand the mechanism of lipid biosynthesis by using young, medium-aged, and mature fruit kernels. Our lipidomic analysis showed that the M. ternifolia kernel was a rich source of unsaturated fatty acids. Moreover, different species of triacylglycerols, diacylglycerol, ceramides, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosp

A long-term study of the effects of lime and nitrogen on a young macadamia orchard included acidifying sulfate of ammonia treatments to separate pH and Ca effects of lime applications. Lime, per se, had no influence on yield, quality, or trunk girth growth. Annual nitrogen applications (with or without neutralising applications of lime), however, consistently depressed the size of nuts and kernels and the percentage of first grade kernels, but had no effect on yield or other quality characteristics. More nuts developed with N treatments but failed to fill effectively.

Macadamia nuts constitute an important part of the world nut industry and are highly valued for their health-promoting properties. Macadamia is an open-pollinated crop that takes 8–12 years to bear fruit when multiplied via seeds. The yield and nut quality in seedling plantations are often highly variable, and grafting is currently the most common method for producing nursery trees with reduced variability. We have previously reported on the tissue-culture propagation of macadamia, and in the present study we assessed the clonal integrity of the regenerated shoots. The RAPD profiles of 3 macad
