Pełny tekst źródłaThe process of Europeanization of aristocratic elites in Wales in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is the starting point of this study. It aims at understanding the mechanisms underlying the reception of the Continental aristocratic culture by the local aristocracy as well as the selection and adaptation of some Welsh cultural elements by the Anglo-Norman aristocracy. In order to grasp these mechanisms, this study revolves around Margam Abbey. It is considered as a possible “meeting place”, inherent to the process of interculturation of the Anglo-Norman and Welsh aristocratic elites from the mid-twelfth century to the end of the thirteenth century. The written production of Margam Abbey, founded by the earl of Gloucester in 1147, gives a rich corpus to draw the portrait of the lay aristocracy in Glamorgan. The portrait made in this study is representative of a multifaceted lay aristocracy. In spite of a cultural and social heterogeneousness, the birth of a common class identity to the aristocratic elites draws. Obtaining a role of agents of transition and transformation, the Cistercians answered the spiritual needs of the Welsh and Anglo-Norman nobles, all seeking the Holy Virgin intercession in order to win their salvation. In order to prevent any claim to transfers of property, the monastery secured the transactions by different adaptations to the specific practices of the lay aristocracy of Glamorgan. This recognition of the aristocratic particularities did not avoid the breaking of conflicts, sometimes violent, often settled before the county court. This latter appears as a second “meeting place” of the process of interculturation. As “meeting place”, Margam Abbey contributed to the Europeanization impacted the lesser Welsh aristocracy in Glamorgan, who adapted to the Continental models. However, this concept presents some significant limits. The Europeanization of the native elites was not complete, because they kept their cultural inheritance. It does not also shed light on the reverse process. So, the adaptation and selection of Welsh cultural elements by the Anglo-Norman aristocracy highlight the process of interculturation of the aristocratic elites in Glamorgan

Pełny tekst źródłaThrough the examples of Lagrasse, Alet-les-Bains and Caunes-Minervois, this thesis intends to determine the mechanisms and the stakeholders’ role in the development of monastic towns in the Aude department from the 8th century to the mid-16th century. The modes of settlement on these sites are examined, as well as the relations between the religious community and the inhabitants. The construction of urban space in these medium-sized medieval towns is one of the main topics addressed through the inventory of houses, the analysis of historic plans and of medieval or modern written sources. The peri-urban space is regarded as an area allowing both communities to secure a part of their supplies and, in this sense, as a space they had to share and that was essential to the relations between them

Pełny tekst źródłaThis work studies the links between politics and religion in St. Albans Abbey (England) : the intellectual productions of the scriptorium of this Benedictine monastery are discussed in connexion with the way political power and contemporary debates were represented and examined. This work starts with a survey of the links which existed between the monastic community, those involved in politics, and the institutions of the realm. Monks were involved in many different ways in the government of the realm. These activities, the importance of the monastery – place of devotion situated on a major road – explain that monks are to be found in multiscale networks : monks and laic officers were acquainted to local county officers and to nobility. These personal, institutional and sometimes commercial links help us explain some of their opinions about courts and politics. The analysis of the intellectual productions of the St Albans monks is the occasion to understand how one topic – power – is perceived by men whose life experience were different, whereas all had undertaken the same vows in front of God and the rest of the community of St Albans. Hence, representation of political life and contemporary debates by the monks in chronicles is studied and compared to the reflexion on the nature and the limits of royal power in treatises. These reflexions were nourished by various crises, including parliamentary crises, where old debates about the exercise of power were revived. Some of these ideas about the links between temporal and spiritual powers were put on a new light by the proposition of the theologian John Wyclif, Lollards, and also by the new promulgation of statutes intended to limit papal intervention in the English realm. These questions are the subject of a more theoretical part of the study, where I analyse how monks wrote for both kings and popes, depending on the circumstances, but most of all for their own community, in a time when many discussions focused on monastic endowment. This works is an intent to put religious problematics at the heart of our approach to medieval political culture, taking the point of view of men at the crossroad between politics and religion, in a time when the line between political power and spiritual powers was contested

Pełny tekst źródłaFrom the 11th century to the 13th century the abbey of Marmoutier established a significant network of monastic dependencies – or priories – in Western France and especially in the area of Anjou. In this region the foundation movement flourished between the years 1040 and 1150, the monks of Anjou being well-skilled in navigating the often intricate local constraints and power relationships. Each priory managed its own complex set of lands, the acquisition, organization and legal defense of which were undertaken by the monks, with the support and supervision of the mother-abbey. A study of the monastic writings attests to these strong ties between the Abbey and its priories. Finally, major modifications of this prioral system characterized the end of the Twelfth century through the beginning of the Thirteenth : in Anjou some houses disappeared while others continued to grow, yet another sign of the Abbey's ability to adapt to difficult circumstances in order to persevere
Pouyet, Thomas. "Cormery et son territoire : origines et transformations d'un établissement monastique dans la longue durée (8e-18e siècles)". Thesis, Tours, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOUR2006.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this research is to characterize the topographic, functional and architectural aspects of the benedictin abbey of Cormery, founded in Touraine by the community of St Martin in 791 and which was in use until the French Revolution. This multi-scalar approach of the monastery is based on written sources and standing architectural remains which include the monastic buildings. The first part of this work is dedicated to analyze the foundation process of the monastery in the Indre Valley, especially the link with the river. Secondly, the architectural study of the remains of the abbey church and the still-standing Romanesque western tower was carried out with photogrammetric and lasergrammetric recording. Finally, we conclude this work with the analysis of the spatial organization of the monastic settlement and its periphery where a medieval market town developed
Rollier, Gilles. "Implantation et hydraulique monastiques : le cas de Cluny". Thesis, Lyon 2, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010LYO20056/document.
Pełny tekst źródłaIn 910, abbot Bernon and duke of Aquitaine, Guillaume le Pieux, implanted the abbey of Cluny, in a valley of Mâconnais, on an alluvial terrace formed in the confluence between Grosne and one of his tributaries. This situation offers important possibilities of use of streams for the diverse needs of the monks. The tributary, which will take in the course of the Middle Ages the suggestive name of Médasson, is used for the fountains of the monastery and for the sewer systems where latrines are installed. The mills, which the monastic mill, are built on arms derived of Grosne.By the choice of a site placed in border of river, the founders of Cluny could have perpetuated the traditions of implantation which we can to perceive from the Carolingian period and which will be followed by the Cistercians. In the environment of this site of confluence, the monks of Cluny are gradually going to develop a hydraulic network the complexity of which is bound at the same time to the needs of an important monastic community, to the successive modifications of the Monastic constructions and to the respect for the limits of the immunity territories of the abbey

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the north of the kingdom of France and more particularly in mediaeval Picardy, the history of the diocese of Noyon, apprehended from the point of view of the relations between aristocracy and religious communities from the end of the 9th to the beginning of the 12th centuries, reveals a relative documentary exception :in Vermandois as in Noyonnais, a certain profusion of sources (essentially diplomatic) allows a refined understanding of the place of the abbeys and chapters in the manifestation of secular religious policies. The same sources require special but not exclusive attention to the comital and episcopal policies in this area. However, for the whole period chosen, the latter were too often perceived as structured and linear blocks. It is necessary to overcome these impressions of homogeneity and immobility by showing the diversity and evolution of the reciprocal influences uniting on the one hand the religious communities, on the other hand the counts of Vermandois and the bishops of Noyon. While the churches of the studied diocese have been regarded as key places of expression of the fidelity of the second-rate aristocracy towards the high princely powers, we must also question the religious behavior of all the powerful (especially castellan) in order to show how they demonstrate individualized attitudes and contribute to drawing the contours of local authorities. In other words, the relations between aristocrats and religious communities, studied both in their material and spiritual aspects, are part of political societies polarized by the prince, whether the latter is bishop of Noyon, count of Vermandois or even castellan ?
