This paper describes two marine renewable energy stakeholder workshops in North Scotland that were held in March 2009 to discuss industry requirements for developing the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters between Scotland's north coast and the northern isles. This is an area of considerable interest for the development of renewable energy in Scotland. If the area is developed (mainly with wave and tidal power) it could make a significant contribution to both meeting government renewable energy targets and to the local economy. Abstract This paper examines marine planning in Scotland and the extent to which it constrains or enables change towards adaptive governance. An in-depth case study of the partnership-based regional marine planning process is presented, based on interviews and documentary analysis. Drawing on adaptive governance theory, analysis focussed on key themes of: (1) local governance and integration across scales; (2) participation and collaboration; (3) learning, innovation and adaptability; and (4) self-organization. We describe Scottish farming as a network of resources and farm enterprises. Resources move between enterprises as inputs and outputs. The network of farming activities was taken from the SRUC Farm Management Handbook. The network is fragile to the removal of resources, but some resources, such a labour and land, are more important as they are shared between more enterprises. The farming system constrains changes between enterprise. Changing from one business enterprise to another is likely to be easier the more shared resources there are between them.

There is now a global and regional awareness that marine fisheries have been significantly mismanaged in all parts of the world, including the South Atlantic and South Pacific oceans. This paper attempts to provide the background information necessary for the development of a new coastal and marine resources managment strategy for the IDB and offers some suggestions for its formulation and implementation. The paper emphasizes the critical need for improved management, in order to obtain the potentially large economic rewards of the fisheries, and to provide a basis for dealing with conflicts o

Dynamic and interconnected marine systems cover about 70% of the earth’s surface. Marine and coastal systems are vital to many ecological processes necessary for general life and human well being, including food provisioning, climate regulation, and the freshwater cycle. This module serves as an introduction to the aspects of marine biology concerning conservation. An overview is provided of marine biodiversity and physical oceanography, as well as major marine ecosystems and marine ecology. Sections focus on topics specifically relevant to conservation, namely resource use, threats, and manag

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are coastal or offshore marine areas managed to protect the natural and/or cultural resources of a particular place. MPA networks, a more recent development, are systems of MPAs designed to increase protection to a geographic area. There can me numerous goals of MPAs though they are mainly related to conservation (e.g., biodiversity conservation, protection of a rare species), or sustainability (e.g., fisheries management, recreation). This module introduces MPAs including the costs and benefits, relations to biodiversity and fisheries management, design and imple

The National Park Service (NPS) Water Resources Division’s Natural Resource Condition Assessment (NRCA) Program initiated an NRCA project with Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU) in 2022. The purpose of an NRCA is to synthesize information related to the primary drivers and stressors affecting natural resource conditions at a park and to report conditions for natural resource topics selected by park managers. Resource conditions are evaluated as either a condition assessment or a gap analysis, depending on data availability. For FOPU’s NRCA, managers selected salt marsh, shorebirds, Eastern
