Over geological time, glacial-interglacial cycles affected the geographical range of marine species. Typically, this has been documented by tracking the long-distance dispersal of tropical, shallow-water mollusc species in archipelagos during the last phase of glacial terminations or the early phase of an interglacial episode. Many studies conducted in the Macaronesian archipelagos (i.e., the Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canaries and Cabo Verde) support this view. To date, however, such studies exclude data from full glacial periods, owing to difficulties in accessing the geological record of l

Large-scale gravitational flank collapses of steep volcanic islands are hypothetically capable of triggering megatsunamis with highly catastrophic effects. Yet, evidence for the generation and impact of collapse-triggered megatsunamis and their high run-ups remains scarce or is highly controversial. Therefore, doubts remain on whether island flank failures truly generate enough volume flux to trigger giant tsunamis, leading to diverging opinions concerning the real hazard potential of such collapses. We show that one of the most prominent oceanic volcanoes on Earth—Fogo, in the Cape Verde Isla

Evidence for frequent, large landslides on the flanks of the volcanic edifices forming the Canary Islands include outstanding landslide scars and their correlative submarine and subaerial rock and debris avalanche deposits. These landslides involved volumes ranging from tens to hundreds of km3. The sudden entry of large volumes of rock masses in the sea may have triggered tsunamis capable of affecting the source and neighboring islands, with the resulting huge waves dragging coastal and seabed materials and fauna and redepositing them inland. Here, we present new geological evidence and geochr

Abstract. INTRODUCTIONMcMurtry et al. (2004) described a thin (c. 20–50 cm) bioclastic, carbonate gravel from the NW coast of Hawaii, on the flanks of the extinct Kohala volcano (Fig. 1). This unit is found between modern altitudes of c. 1.5–61 m above sea-level. The deposit is sandwiched between a fossil soil below and a modern soil above in Keawe’ula Bay (Fig. 2). Dating of coral fragments from within the deposit indicate an age of 110±10 ka (McMurtry et al., 2004). Given rates of subsidence on Hawaii, this would place the deposit at an original palaeo-altitude up to 491 m. The deposit conta

The distribution of tsunami deposits in the lacustrine-swamp sections on the Kasatka Bay coast is analyzed. The main objects were a swamp formed on the place of overgrown lagoon-type lake located behind dune ridge, and a low swampy isthmus between Oktyabrskoe and Srednee lakes. Five major events have been identified, run-up parameters and age have been determined on the base of radiocarbon dating and tephrostratigraphy. Diatom analysis data were used to confirm the marine origin of the sand. Established events are correlated with data on adjacent islands and the Eastern Hokkaido coast. A trace
