Introduction In recent years the concept of ‘recovery’ has become increasingly prevalent in both government and health service policy, and in the terminology used by mental health service users. The current study examines the experiences of recovery as described by service users living in a rural / semi-rural population. This is in contrast to the majority of similar studies, which have tended to focus on urban centres where population characteristics, and the services available to service users, differ in many ways. As such, the aim of the current study was to add to the growing theory regard

Policy initiatives are calling for mental health services to change their ways of working to prioritising the promotion of service users’ personal recovery. This requires a major re-negotiation of working practices and the relationship between service users and staff/services and their respective social positions. The present study aimed to explore the construction of recovery and the positioning of service users and staff during the adoption of recovery-oriented practices in a community support and recovery team. Vocation has been described as a calling and a means of fulfilment; and personal recovery as the process of living life as well as possible. Vocational recovery can be envisaged as a person with mental illness regaining or establishing valued roles associated with vocation as it is broadly defined. This thesis explores how people with mental illness establish and achieve their vocational recovery goals within the context of complex and ever-changing policy and service settings.
