Concentrations of 18 metals, including toxic metals (As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb) and essential metals (Al, Ba, Be, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, Mg, Mn, K, Sr, V and Zn) in various compartments (sediment, floc, and periphyton) were measured in the Florida Everglades to (i) establish the spatial distribution pattern of the metals in the Everglades and (ii) quantify the major sources of the 18 metals present in the Everglades. This PhD thesis studies the performance of metal-on-metal bearings, which are used in hip arthroplasty. Three aspects in particular were studied, namely the clinical results, the release of cobalt and chromium wear debris from the bearings, and the effects of this debris on a cell's DNA. This study investigates the use of two intermediate shapes, constructed with an automatic design strategy, in Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) to improve thickness distribution and geometric accuracy for cranial implants. Previous work showed a trade-off between these two factors when using only one intermediate stage. In this research, five three-stage experiments were conducted, along with both a two-stage and a single-stage control. During year 1 of this project a test to evaluate the sensitivity of the heat affected zone (HAZ) to hydrogen cracking was developed. This was in response to a need for a test which provided unambiguous results in contrast to existing test methods which often led to difficulties in interpretation.
