The novel Rimbaud le fils written by Pierre Michon is analysed in this study, using the theoretical model of modalities and modes of media elaborated by Lars Elleström (2010), the typology of intermediality defined by Werner Wolf (2002) and Irina Rajewsky’s (2010) metatheoretical reflections upon the concept of borders. The novel by Michon relates to some famous photos that have become important in creating the understandings of Arthur Rimbaud as a poet and a myth. The guiding question of the analysis has been: How can the intermedial relations to the photos create meaning in the novel?   The theoretical model of Elleström has been applied in order to define the modalities and modes involved in the photography and in the written text of the novel. Thereby the significant differences and similarities between the different media have become distinguishable. The categorization proposed by Wolf and the remarks made by Rajewsky on the concepts of borders, have helped to link together the observations of modalities and modes with the hermeneutic reading of the text. Using the intermedial references has shown to be a possible way to express or to reinforce the literary expression of for instance: the heaviness of the literary legacy and mythology, the absent, the genius, the departure, the silence, the religious language, the unknown, the literary sham, the survival and the protective power of an expressive richness that relates to or implies several semiotic systems.

Cette thèse se propose trois buts étroitement liés. Le premier en importance est de comprendre l'oeuvre de Pierre Michon, depuis les Vies minuscules (1984) jusqu'aux Onze (2009), comme un enchaînement précis de contenus génériques, et de montrer que cette oeuvre, quoiqu'elle se laisse intuitivement assimiler à des genres anciens tels que la "vie" et l'autobiographie, ressortit à une évolution essentielle de la littérature contemporaine, si bien que l'analyse détaillée de son devenir fera apparaître l'universalité sous-jacente de nombreux éléments soi-disant personnels et idiosyncrasiques mis de l'avant par l'auteur. Le second but est d'appréhender le processus historique complexe qui mène à une telle oeuvre ; plus précisément, il s'agira d'expliquer comment différentes époques produisent différents genres littéraires qui sont autant de façons de réfléchir l'existence "réelle" de l'homme sur terre ; ou encore : comment la vie, loin d'être confinée au biographique, est l'affaire de la littérature en général, de sorte que l'épopée, la tragédie, la chronique, le roman de quête, etc. sont tous à leur manière des espèces de vies.Dans la mesure où c'est la nécessité de passer d'un genre à l'autre qui nous occupera avant tout, nous serons en outre amené à voir dans l'oeuvre de Michon la détermination ultime de la vie et, en un sens, son dépassement. This thesis aims at three closely tied goals. The foremost is to understand the works of Pierre Michon, ever since Vies minuscules (Small Lives ; 1984) and up until Les Onze (The Eleven ; 2009), as a precise chain of generic contents, and to demonstrate that this body of work, even though it might appear to belong to older genres such as the "life" and the autobiography, is driven from an essential evolution of contemporary literature so much so that the detailed analysis of its becoming will reveal the underlying universality of numerous so-called personal and idiosyncratic elements put forth by the author. The second goal is to apprehend the complex historical process which leads to such works ; more precisely, the question will be to explain how different periods produce different genres that are as many ways to reflect humanity's "real" existence upon this earth, or : how life, far from being confined to the biographical, is the matter of literature at large, and that the epic, the tragedy ,the chronicles, the romance, etc., are all in their own respect subspecies of the life-genre. Inasmuch as our primary focus will be the necessity of moving from one genre to the other, we shall moreover be lead to see in Michon's works the ultimate determination of the life-genre, and, in a way, its supersession. The third goal will be to seize the concept of the text as that from which the life-genre comes to be and deploys itself, and, to that end, to examine the differences that this concept holds within, namely the fiction, the story and the tale, or in other terms the difference of the narrator, the character and the hero

Pétris de culture et imprégnés de picturalité, les textes de Pierre Michon sont souvent énigmatiques. L’accès aux carnets de travail de Maîtres et serviteurs nous permet de remonter aux sources de l’écrit et de suivre le processus créatif de l’œuvre à partir du fil conducteur de la référence picturale. Nous nous sommes demandée dans quelle mesure l’approche génétique peut nous aider à mieux comprendre la place qu’occupe la peinture dans l’imaginaire de l’auteur et son rôle dans la fabrication de ses textes. Ce travail nous a amenée à étudier le passage des notes de lecture à la constitution de l’écriture, le passage du référentiel au fictionnel, du déjà-dit à l’inédit et du visuel au verbal. Cette dynamique de va et vient entre l’avant-texte et le récit final, a été notre mode opératoire pour déterminer comment la peinture apparaît dès les premières notes consignées dans le carnet jusqu’à leur inscription dans le texte final. Il nous a également permis de cerner les modalités de sélection, de prélèvement, d’appropriation et enfin d’assimilation des éléments exogénétiques dans le texte. Nous avons pu analyser les différentes opérations de réécriture de l’intertexte littéraire et pictural par détournement, effacement et opacification. Nous avons enfin suivi l’itinéraire de la référence picturale du carnet au texte et sa réactivation dans les récits ultérieurs. Si cette première thèse sur les carnets de Pierre Michon n’élucide pas tout à fait l’énigme de ses textes, elle permet néanmoins de comprendre et de suivre le fonctionnement spécifique de l’écriture michonienne, de relancer les réflexions sur l’érudition et elle ouvre la voie à de nouvelles recherches génétiques sur les carnets des autres textes de l’écrivain
Steeped in culture and permeated with pictoriality, Pierre Michon's writings are often enigmatic. Access to the preparatory notebooks for Maîtres et serviteurs made it possible to go to the sources of what was written and to trace the creative process of the work by following the thread of pictorial reference. The question is asked about the degree to which the genetic approach can help to better understand the position of painting in the author's imagination and its role in the building up of his writings. The work led to examining the passage from notes on reading to the elaboration of writing, the passage from referential to fictional, from the already said to the new and from the visual to the verbal. This back-and-forth movement between what precedes writing and the final text was used to determine how painting appears in the very first entries in the notebook until these are incorporated in the final text. It also allowed identification of the modes of selection, sampling and appropriation and finally the incorporation of the exogenetic items in the text. The different operations in the rewriting of the literary and pictorial text by the use of twisting, erasure and opacifying were analysed. Finally, the itinerary of pictorial references from notebook to text and reactivation in subsequent writings were examined. Although this first thesis on Pierre Michon's notebooks does not fully elucidate the enigma of his writings, it nonetheless makes it possible to understand and monitor the specific functioning of 'Michonian' writing and to relaunch reflection on erudition. It opens the way to further genetic research on the notebooks for other works by the writer

Cette thèse porte sur le thème de l’artiste dans l’œuvre de Pierre Michon. L’artiste comme pratiquant d’une carrière liée à la création (picturale, poétique, musicale, etc.) est une figure compliquée, car il habite à la lisière d’un monde intérieur propre à lui seul et de l’univers socio-historique qui l’entoure et qui oriente ses essais. Ayant beaucoup écrit sur les peintres et les écrivains Michon est l’un des auteurs contemporains qui ont largement traité le processus labyrinthique du devenir-artiste. D’ailleurs, la question de l’artiste chez cet auteur ne peut être abordée qu’en compagnie des aspects socio-historiques de son œuvre. Ainsi, notre objectif durant ce travail consiste à analyser la formation de l’artiste, de même que le rôle crucial que jouent les instances socio-historiques dans le devenir-artiste, à partir de l’œuvre de Michon, afin de formuler le point de vue de cet auteur en ce qui concerne les diverses dimensions de la création artistique
This thesis focuses on the theme of the artist in the works of Pierre Michon. The artist as a practitioner of a career linked to creation (pictorial, poetic, musical, etc.) is a complicated figure, because he lives on the edge of an inner world proper to himself and of the socio-historical world that surrounds it and that guides its trials. Having written extensively about painters and writers, Michon is one of the contemporary writers who has widely dealt with the labyrinthine process of becoming-artist. Moreover, the question of the artist in this author can only be approached in the company of the socio-historical aspects of his works. Thus, the objective of this work is to analyze the formation of the artist, as well as the crucial role played by the socio-historical bodies in the becoming-artist, in the works of Michon, in order to formulate the point of view of this author with regard to the various dimensions of artistic creation

À la fin des années 70, lorsqu’on commence à s’interroger autour des changements historico-politiques qui intéressent les deux “moitiés” de l’Europe, la crise du bloc communiste et la fin des idéologies, la référence à la Modernité est inévitable : on discute la crise de la modernité, d’une modernité inaccomplie ou accomplie. Comment est-ce que le paradigme littéraire change en cette “période de mutation”? Comment s’exprime dans la littérature contemporaine la recherche du sens? On assiste, dans le panorama littéraire, au retour du sujet et du besoin anthropologique de la narration, à la fonction du narrateur comme témoin et médiateur d’histoires d’autrui. À travers la narration de récits de vie, des destins “fragmentés”, des biographies réinventées, on peut remarquer l’intention de ressusciter des “marginalia”, des traces oubliées par l’Histoire : on essaie de donner un sens à une vie ou de saisir une vie par le sens, de représenter la quête d’un centre métaphysique par le personnage qui revit le conflit et la dissociation entre “âme et forme”. Ce sont des récits de filiations, ils narrent des relations père-fils, de l’histoire de la faute et de l’origine du pouvoir, mais aussi des vies marginales, des traces de l’histoire et du rôle du narrateur en tant que témoin. Les auteurs ont recours au mythe : on s’interrogera alors sur le sens nouveau de la représentation du mythe dans ces récits en tant qu’interprétation allégorique du contemporain et d’une relation nouvelle au temps ; on questionnera son utilisation en tant qu’allégorie vide et énigmatique
In the late 70s, when one begins to wonder about the historical and political changes regarding the two “halves” of Europe, the crisis of the communist bloc and the end of ideology, the reference to Modernity is inevitable: the crisis of modernity is discussed – a modernity accomplished or unaccomplished. How does the literary paradigm change in this “time of mutation”? How is it expressed the search for meaning in the contemporary literature? We are the witnesses, in the literary scene, of the subject’s return and of the anthropological need of narration (the function of the narrator as a mediator of others’ stories). Through the narration of life stories, “fragmented” destinies, reinvented biographies, we can see the intention of resurrecting the “marginalia”, the traces forgotten by history: we try to give meaning to a life or to grasp a life by meaning, we try to represent the quest for a metaphysical centre through the character reliving the conflict and the dissociation between “soul and forms”. The authors use the myth: we will ask the new meaning of the representation of myth in these stories as an allegorical interpretation of contemporary and a new relationship to time; we will question its use as empty and enigmatic allegory

La littérature contemporaine procède en effet du douloureux sentiment d'une défection des origines. Si bien que le récit contemporain tente en vain de dresser la cartographie des emblèmes déchus de la filiation, à rebours d'une modernité qui multiplie les figures du désuet et du révolu. Jeté dans un univers qui semble sans ordre ni cohérence, dans le récit de filiation le destin du narrateur semble tragiquement insignifiant. Entre paroles empêchées et paroles tues, le passé peine à se reconstruire et la vie se transforme en une épreuve douloureuse sous l'emprise d'un héritage indéchiffrable et lourd à porter. Les récits de Gwenaëlle Aubry, Michel Del Castillo, Pierre Bergounioux et Pierre Michon soulèvent la même interrogation existentielle concernant l'héritage et la liberté. De ces expériences, nous ne relevons pas que des similitudes car, dans ses limites ainsi que dans son aspiration à la liberté, l'homme peut se nuancer différemment. L'analyse que nous avons menée des diverses formes de réminiscences ainsi que des différents moyens mobilisés pour la quête du sens nous montre que la définition de l'homme ne dépend pas seulement des accidents de l'histoire individuelle ou collective. Elle est tributaire de cette force de raison et de liberté. Nous avons proposé une analyse qui présente une approche différente de ce qui se fait couramment pour les récits de filiation, une analyse qui se libère de la lecture limitée qui ne prend en compte que les déterminismes familiaux, sociologiques, politiques et historiques. Notre travail permet de prendre conscience du témoignage à la fois raisonné et passionné qu'est le récit de filiation. Au-delà de leurs différences, les histoires personnelles que nous avons étudiées se rejoignent dans la lutte qui substitue à l'angoisse première un optimisme qui justifie l'être et l'action
Thrown into a world that seems without order or coherence, in the story parentage fate of the narrator seems tragically insignificant. Prevented between words and words kill, past struggles to rebuild and life becomes a painful ordeal in the grip of an indecipherable and legacy to wear. The stories of Gwenaëlle Aubry, Michel Del Castillo, Pierre Bergounioux and Pierre Michon raise the same existential question about the heritage and freedom. From these experiences, we do not note that because of the similarities in its limits and in its aspiration to freedom, man can qualify differently. The analysis we have conducted various forms of reminiscences and different resources mobilized for the search for meaning shows that the definition of man depends not only on accidents of individual or collective history. It depends on the force of reason and freedom. We have proposed an analysis that presents a different approach to what is commonly done for parentage stories, an analysis that is released from the limited reading that takes into account family determinism, sociological, political and historical. Our work raises awareness of testimony both reasoned and passionate about what parentage story. Beyond their differences, the personal stories we studied are joined in the struggle that replaces the first anguish optimism that justifies the being and action

Prenant notre point de départ dans l’étude du rapport fantastique avec le savoir mis en évidence par Michel Foucault à propos du travail littéraire de Flaubert, nous voudrions nous interroger sur les modalités proprement contemporaines des rapports entre les écrivains et les savoirs, et tenter de caractériser précisément ces rapports dans la littérature européenne contemporaine, en nous appuyant sur les œuvres de Pierre Michon, W.G. Sebald et Antonio Tabucchi. À l’aide d’une définition pragmatique des savoirs, nous commençons par une étude des représentations de l’érudition dans la fiction, en nous concentrant sur divers personnages, secondaires ou plus importants, qui jouent tous des rôles d’intercesseurs dans la production, la transmission et la diffusion des savoirs. S’ils fonctionnent bien d’un certain côté comme des figures de l’érudition, images idéales de savoirs efficaces, ces personnages portent aussi des critiques des savoirs établis et des hiérarchies qui lui sont associées. Les lieux associés aux savoirs, bibliothèques et musées en particulier, sont également abordés selon cet angle polémique. La seconde partie de notre travail s’attache à l’étude des usages des savoirs par les écrivains que nous avons choisis, en fournissant des éléments pour une poétique des textes littéraires contemporains construits sur un rapport à l’érudition. Leur écriture seconde, s’appuyant sur une grande variété de textes, s’approprie de nombreux savoirs. Nous étudions successivement les diverses modalités des usages des paroles rapportées, que cela soit à travers l’oralité, par des citations, ou la présence des langues étrangères, pour montrer les usages particuliers des savoirs que font nos écrivains. En opposition à un usage postmoderne de l’érudition, une érudition inquiète, mettant au centre de sa dynamique une mise en commun du sens, se fait jour
Beginning with the fantastic relation with knowledge highlighted by Michel Foucault regarding Gustave Flaubert’s literary work, we would like to bend over the contemporary modalities of the relations between knowledge and literary writers, and try to precisely characterize theses relations in contemporary European literature, basing our work on the examples of Pierre Michon, W.G. Sebald and Antonio Tabucchi. A pragmatic definition of knowledge helps us to begin with a study of the representations of erudition in the fiction, focusing upon various characters, who play an intermediary role in the production, transmission or diffusion of knowledge. If on one hand they operate as figures of erudition, ideals representations of effective knowledge, these characters on the other hand carry with them some critics of the established knowledges and the hierarchy that are associated with them. The places associated with knowledge, libraries or museums, are also studied in this polemic approach. The second part of our work studies the uses of knowledge done by the writers chosen, giving some elements for a poetic study of the contemporary literary texts that are written in a relation with knowledge. Their secondary writing, built on a wide variety of texts, assimilates various knowledges. Depuis les années 80 et jusqu’à aujourd’hui, entre le constat initial de sa perte et celui plus récent de son ressaisissement, le monde s’est imposé aux écrivains ainsi qu’une matière discontinue et douteuse. C’est à partir de traces que les récits de Marie-Hélène Lafon, de Laurent Mauvignier, de Pierre Michon et de Jean Rouaud s’érigent et se constituent, cependant que la réévaluation du rapport au réel et à l’H-histoire leur enjoint de questionner l’origine en termes symboliques. L’appréhension du monde passe ainsi chez eux tantôt par le prisme de l’enquête et tantôt par celui de l’anthropologie pour inscrire le présent dans un lien étroit avec les symboles et les mythes qui racontent les commencements. Aussi, c’est en réinterrogeant en profondeur les modalités de ses récits et de ses poétiques que la littérature contemporaine s’attache à recommencer le monde. Aux prises avec les figures d’engendrement, elle s’ordonne singulièrement entre obliquité et ubiquité ; elle s’applique à repenser l’espace et le temps au présent, ainsi qu’à réévaluer le champ et les formes de ses implications ; elle convoque tout l’empan du spectre des symboliques élémentaires au service de représentations de la création et de figurations d’un être-au-monde ; enfin elle rejoue la place du monde dans le cosmos, pose des mots sur les choses, et réinterroge le lien de l’humain à l’animal afin de délinéer les contours d’un nouvel ethos
From the 1980’s until today, between the initial assessment of its loss and that, more recent, of its re-creation, the world has been adopted by writers as a discontinuous and questionable subject. It is from traces only that the narratives of Marie-Hélène Lafon, Laurent Mauvignier, Pierre Michon and Jean Rouaud are constructed and constituted, while the re-assessment of the relationship to reality and to the story/History is urging them to question the origin of the world in symbolic terms. The understanding of the world is thus filtered in turns through the lens of the investigation or that of the anthropology to closely link the present to the symbols and myths that tell the story of beginnings. Hence, it is by profoundly questioning the arrangements of its narratives and its poetics that contemporary literature commits to recreating the world. Dealing with begetting figures, it positions itself interestingly between obliquity and ubiquity ; it focuses on rethinking place and time to fit the present time, as well as on re-assessing the scope and the arrangements of its implications ; it summons the whole span of the spectrum of elementary symbolism in the service of representations of the creation and of the depiction of ways of being a part of the world ; lastly it reenacts the place of the world in the cosmos, puts words to things, and questions the link between Human and Animal again in order to delineate the shape of a new ethos

Ce travail doctoral se veut être une approche comparative au sein de la littérature française contemporaine. L'intitulé du projet : « Vers une poétique du "récit de filiation" contemporain : autour de La Place (Gallimard, 1983) d’Annie Ernaux et des Vies minuscules (Gallimard, 1984) de Pierre Michon » se présentera comme l'expression synthétique en même temps que critique d'une tentative pour approcher, cerner et évaluer une partie non dénuée d’intérêt de cette littérature en plein essor. Ce sera tout d’abord l’occasion de montrer quels sont les caractéristiques, les défis et les limites du « récit de filiation », expression forgée par Dominique Viart dans un article qui date de 1999. Puis, en partant de ces résultats, il conviendra d’expliquer quel est l’intérêt littéraire et scientifique de l’étude des deux ouvrages du corpus et en quoi ils sont parfaitement représentatifs de la (re-)naissance de ce genre au début des années 80, ce qui se traduira concrètement par le succès quantitatif et qualitatif qui doit être interprété comme la preuve indéniable que cette époque contemporaine tente, à travers ce genre, de saisir certaines raisons profondes de son être et de son devenir. Cette recherche se servira délibérément d'une démarche qui mettra en oeuvre des instruments d'analyse appartenant à plusieurs domaines distincts mais complémentaires : l'histoire littéraire, la littérature générale et comparée, la sociologie, l’ethnologie, l’anthropologie et la poétique de l’écriture intime. Ce choix est à la fois motivé par la formation initiale reçue en Lettres Modernes, et imposé par la nature même du sujet ; une lecture pluridisciplinaire de cette littérature en train de se faire et de ce genre émergent s’imposera de fait. Par ailleurs, dans le but de bien cerner la problématique, seront également adoptées des approches d’ordre historique, générique, thématique, stylistique et narratologique
This doctoral work is intended to be a comparative approach in contemporary French literature. The title of the project: « Towards a poetics of the contemporary "récit de filiation": around La Place (Gallimard, 1983) by Annie Ernaux and Vies minuscule (Gallimard, 1984) by Pierre Michon" will be the expression synthetic as well as critical of an attempt to approach, identify and evaluate a non-irrelevant part of this burgeoning literature. It will first be an opportunity to show the characteristics, challenges and limits of the "récit de filiation", an expression coined by Dominique Viart in an article that dates from 1999. Then, starting from these results, we will explain the literary and scientific interest of the study of the two bookis of our corpus and how they are perfectly representative of the birth of this genre in the early 80s, which will concretely translate into the quantitative and qualitative success that must be interpreted as the undeniable proof that this contemporary period tries, through this genre, to grasp some deep reasons for his being and his future. This research will deliberately use an approach that will implement analytical tools belonging to several distinct but complementary fields: literary history, general and comparative literature, sociology, ethnology, anthropology and poetics intimate writing. This choice is at the same time motivated by the initial formation received in Modern Letters, and imposed by the nature of the subject; a multidisciplinary reading of this emerging literature and this emerging genre will become an evidence. Moreover, in order to better understand the problematic, we will also adopt historical, generic, thematic, stylistic and narratological approaches

Les récits de vie d’Annie Ernaux, Pierre Michon, Pierre Bergounioux et François Bon tentent de témoigner des figures oubliées de l’arbre généalogique et des figures laissées pour compte de la société contemporaine. En écho aux mutations épistémologiques des sciences humaines dans les années 1960-1970, ces quatre auteurs entendent écrire l’Histoire non plus du point de vue des hommes illustres, mais du point de vue des anonymes. La mise en récit des sans-voix participe d’un renouvellement des paradigmes de la narration dans les dernières décennies du XXème siècle. Les figures sans histoire semblent en effet induire des processus de réduction et de marginalisation du genre romanesque. La trame des vies muettes se déroule sur le mode de l’éclat, bribes de la mémoire ou jaillissement incisif d’un réel à vif. La ténuité des archives, le maintien d’un soupçon éthique et poétique quant à la reconfiguration narrative de ces vies réelles conduisent l’écrivain à délaisser les formes périmées du roman réaliste. Ils le poussent aussi à questionner l’écart social et culturel avec ces demi-autres, mués en autant de miroirs de soi en éclats. Travaillées d’hypothèses personnelles, analytiques ou fantasmatiques, ces narrations au genre hybride font apparaître une figure d’auteur majuscule problématique, latérale et brisée, nourrie d’une incertitude épistémique majeure. Ces identités narratives diffractées – personnages et auteurs – interrogent en retour l’histoire de la littérature, sa place et sa puissance de résistance dans la société d’aujourd’hui
Annie Ernaux, Pierre Michon, Pierre Bergounioux and François Bon's life-narratives attempt to bear witness to the genealogical tree of forgotten names and overlooked figures of contemporary society. In dialogue with the epistemological mutations of the social sciences in the 1960's and 1970's, these four authors will work to write History, not from the point of view of the illustrious, but from the point of view of the anonymous. Telling the stories of the voiceless contributes to the renewal of narrative paradigms in the last decades of the 20th century. These figures without history seem to conduce to a process of reduction and marginalization of the novelistic genre itself. The plot of these muted lives unfolds in the form of fragments, snatches from memory or sudden surges of raw reality. The scarcity of archives, the sustained suspicion, both ethical and poetical, regarding the narrative reconfiguration of these real lives lead the writer to abandon the outdated forms of the realistic novel. Such factors also question the social and cultural gap with these « half-others », turned into so many reflections of the self in a shattered mirror. Wrought with personal hypotheses, whether analytical or fantasised, these hybrid narratives reveal a problematic image of the Author, as a lateral and broken entity, informed by major epistemic doubts. In return, these diffracted narrative identities – characters as well as authors – raise questions as to the history of literature, its place and its power of resistance in today's society

Ce travail propose d'étudier conjointement les écritures contemporaines de Pierre Michon et Richard Millet, à travers leurs œuvres respectives : Vies minuscules, La Grande Beune et La Gloire des Pythre, L'Amour des trois sœurs Piale. Enracinés dans le terroir limousin pour l'un, corrézien pour l'autre, ces récits se donnent comme des lieux de mémoire et de rédemption, des tombeaux vivants pour des êtres minuscules voués à l'oubli. Mais sauver du silence des êtres anonymes en transformant leur existence, réelle ou imaginaire, en légende, c'est dépasser la sphère de la simple biographie rurale pour pénétrer celle de la fiction romanesque : oscillant de fait entre vérité et mensonge, tissant les voix comme autant de rets, le récit tente, par des détours multiples, de rendre une réalité qui se dérobe sans cesse. De cette vanité du langage et de leur entreprise, les narrateurs ne sont pas dupes mais la langue n'en reste pas moins, à la fois en tant que motif obsédant et matériau incontournable, l'enjeu fondamental de leurs écritures qui tantôt l'idolâtrent tel un fétiche, tantôt la rejettent avec violence. En outre, par son aspect charnel, le dire des deux auteurs tend à donner épaisseur à la réalité mais achoppe inéluctablement à une interrogation obsédante : comment donner à voir l'invisible et l'absence ? L'exploration des recoins du langage et de ses potentialités est l'une des voies empruntées pour tenter de se libérer des mythologies de l'échec et de la perte. Livrant bataille avec leur propre impossibilité et leur artifice, ces œuvres laissent sourdre la tension qui préside à leur déploiement, entre le désir fantasmé et l'imposture de leur accomplissement
This work studies both the contemporary writings of Pierre Michon (1945-) and Richard Millet (1953-) through their respective works : Vies Minuscules, La Grande Beune and La Gloire des Pythre, L'Amour des Trois Sœurs Piale. One rooted in the rural Limousin, the other in Corrèze, these stories are depicted as places of memories and redemption, living graves for valueless people doomed to oblivion. But saving anonymous people from silence by changing their life, either real or unreal, into a legend, means going beyond the sphere of the simple rural biography and entering the one of romantic fiction. Thus swinging between truth and lie, weaving the voices into nets, the story tries through manifold roads to give out a reality which keeps on vanishing. The narrators are not deceived by the vanity of the language and of their project. However, both as an obsessive theme and unavoidable material, the language remains the fundamental stake of their writings which sometimes idolises it like a fetish and sometimes rejects it with violence. Besides, through its fleshly nature, the two authors' message tends to give depth to reality but inevitably comes up against an obsessive question: how to reveal the invisible and the absence? Since they endlessly question the power of appearance, the exploration of the recesses of the language and its potentialities, painting or music are among the ways followed in order to try and free oneself from the mythologies of failure and loss. Struggling with their own impossibility and their artifice, these works let well up the tension which commands their display, between fantasized desire and the deception of their completion

Mobilitet genom att köra egen bil ger en ökad livskvalitet. Förekomsten av stroke ökar och för att kunna tillfredställa individens behov av aktivitet och självständighet i transporter finns ett ökat behov av körkortsbedömningar. Restsymtomen efter en stroke kan variera. Därför krävs olika typer av bedömningar. Arbetsterapeuter som är vana att arbeta klientcentrerat och bedöma skilda färdigheter har mycket att tillföra i körkortsfrågor. Syftet med studien var att sammanställa beskrivningar av bedömningsinstrument för körförmåga efter stroke i vetenskaplig litteratur, utifrån författarnas frågeställningar. En systematisk litteraturstudie användes som metod. Femton vetenskapligt granskade artiklar samt en master of science uppsats ingick i studien. Resultat visade en stor mängd bedömningsinstrument, varav majoriteten testade egenskaper på taktisk nivå enligt Michons hierarkiska modell. Ytterst få av instrumenten kunde kopplas till de av författarna efterfrågade kvalitetsaspekterna. Arbetsterapeuternas utgångspunkter var i de allra flesta fall att bedöma färdighet snarare än insikt i frågan om bilkörning. I diskussionen tar författarna upp att arbetsterapeuter är väl lämpade för den här typen av bedömningar trots att tillfälle sällan ges, detta baserat utifrån litteraturgenomgången. Vidare ger författarna förslag på fortsatt forskning i form av utvecklandet av ett nytt bedömningsinstrument som ska baseras på ett arbetsprov för bilkörning som alternativ till uppkörning.


Mobility through driving a car leads to enhanced quality of life. The prevalence of stroke is increasing, and to satisfy the individual’s need for activity and independence in transportation, an increased need of assessments of the ability to drive is apparent. Residual symptoms of stroke vary. There is therefore a need of different kinds of assessments. Occupational Therapists familiar with client-centred assessments and used to assessing various skills can contribute to issues concerning the acquisition of driving licences. The aim of the study was to gather descriptions of tools for assessing the ability to drive after stroke in scientific literature, based on the authors´ questions. A systematic review was the method used. Fifteen scientifically reviewed articles and a Master of Science report were included in the study. The main outcome was that a great number of assessment tools were found, of which the majority tested skills on the tactical level according to the hierarchic model of Michon. Very few of the tools could be related to the requested quality aspects. The occupational therapists´ starting point in most cases was to assess skill rather than insight into the question of car-driving. The authors believe that occupational therapists are well suited for that kind of assessment, based on the results of this study. The authors suggest further research in developing a new assessment tool based on a practical test for car driving as an alternative to the driving test.

"Mort du sujet", "retour du sujet", "sujet postmoderne", notre temps n'est pas avare de concepts et de formules... Or, savoir précisément ce qu'ils recouvrent est un autre défi. Penser l'époque contemporaine est en effet une gageure intellectuelle et déterminer ce qu'est le sujet ne l'est pas moins... Pour cela, étudier les spécificités du sujet aujourd'hui dans ses trois acceptions d'écrivain, de fable et de personnage sans gommer les différences propres à un corpus d'étude comparatiste semblait de bonne méthode. Une trentaine de vies imaginaires et d'essais méditatifs, formes littéraires nées pour ainsi dire dans le dernier quart du XXe siècle ; des proses mi-fictionnelles mi-sérieuses de quatre auteurs contemporains ayant déjà une certaine reconnaissance institutionnelle, P. Michon, G. Macé, P. Quignard et Fl. Delay, constituait notre corpus d'étude. Se demander d'abord comment les ruptures avec l'ère formaliste affectaient la parole de nos auteurs était une étape nécessaire. On les a ainsi vu refuser l'autorité de "l'auteur" pour se représenter en "lettrés actifs" et chercher davantage l'espace tenu mais ferme d'un "effet sujet" que les sables mouvants de l'écriture personnelle. Que cette subjectivité repensée influe également sur le délicat équilibre de l'avéré et de l'imaginaire dans nos textes n'est alors pas étonnant. Elle est révélatrice de l'attente double qui caractérise notre temps et d'une des configurations que prend le lyrisme dans la prose contemporaine. Ces tensions dans l'écriture sont cependant moins sources de déchirements que l'origine d'une figuration nouvelle. D'une densité légère, d'une luminosité spectrale et d'une profondeur complexe et translucide à la fois, l'hologramme constitue une métaphore riche de sèmes pour penser l'écriture contemporaine comme le fonctionnement du personnage dans nos textes. Ni acteur impliqué dans la glèbe du monde ni individu désabusé, le sujet contemporain est plutôt ce rêveur qui construit des mondes et qui s'efforce d'y advenir. Altérant le présent pour pouvoir rencontrer autrui, le sujet contemporain s'assume comme être de relation et d'accueil, nouveau sujet lyrique qu'une voix chuchotée a fait naître entre le monde de l'attesté et celui de l'imaginaire
"Death of the subject", "return of the subject", Postmodern subject" - modern criticism is not short of such notions and formulae. To know precisely what these mean is, however, another matter entirely... Whilst understanding the contemporary poses an intellectual challenge of one kind, defining the subject poses another of equal importance. For this reason, it seemed methodologically appropriate to define the specificities of the subject today by considering the three dimensions it assumes in the works of contemporary writers - namely the scholarly, the fabulous and the fictional. The corpus of works considered in this study comprises about thirty imaginary lives and meditative essays - literary forms which have developed mainly during the last quarter of the 20th century. These texts, by four relatively well-established literary figures, (P. Michon, G. Macé, P. Quignard and F. Delay) mingle both fiction and reality. It was firstly necessary to determine how the break with the Formalist era had affected the writing of the authors considered. In this regard, they were found to be locking for a more concrete way of self-expression thus avoiding the potential pitfalls inherent in subjective writing. that this re-analysis of subjectivity in the chosen texts equally affects the delicate characterises our times and illustrative of one of the forms of lyricism in contemporary prose. Such tensions in contemporary writing do not lead so much to rupture as to the beginnings of a new configuration. With a lightness, a spectral luminosity and a depth of complexity with a translucent quality, the hologram represents a rich set of metaphors for contemporary writing and the dynamic of the character within our texts. Neither an active force within the world nor disabused by it, the contemporary subject is above all a dreamer constructing its own worlds in which to take place ; altering the present in order to approach others, the contemporary subject presents itself as open to relationships with others, and constitutes a new lyrical entity brought forth by a whispering voice between the real world and the imagined

Littérature et peinture n'ont cessé, à travers l'histoire de l'esthétique occidentale, d'entretenir un dialogue certes souvent teinté de polémique, mais incontestablement fécond. Au cœur de cet échange, dans le domaine du roman contemporain, la représentation de la peinture hollandaise du Siècle d'or ressort avec un relief particulier. Parmi les raisons de la prédilection des romanciers pour cette école picturale, se distinguent : son aspect puissamment novateur, l'extraordinaire richesse de sa production, les affinités électives qu'elle possède avec la sphère du roman ; mais aussi, parmi la cohorte des petits maîtres talentueux, le patronage de quelques figures légendaires, aujourd'hui regardées comme des « phares » de l'univers artistique : Rembrandt, Vermeer et Hals. Entrée en force dans le roman avec l'œuvre de Balzac, convoquée ensuite chez des auteurs tels que Gautier ou les Concourt, la peinture hollandaise occupe une place de choix dans la Recherche du temps perdu : la qualité indiscutable de génie y est accordée à Rembrandt, et Proust a grandement contribué à la reconnaissance de l'excellence de Vermeer. Ponctuellement, nous retrouvons la présence des peintres hollandais chez des auteurs « reconnus »; c'est toutefois dans l'édition « grand public » récente qu'ils sont le plus souvent représentés. L'étude porte sur le statut que les romans français et anglophones, depuis Marcel Proust, accordent au descriptif, sur les modalités de l'implication de l'objet-tableau dans la dynamique narrative, sur la manière dont la figure légendaire des peintres se voit reconduite ou infléchie, et enfin sur ce qu'il est advenu aujourd'hui du roman d'artiste
All through the history of Western art, literature and painting have had polemical but constructive relationships. In the thick of this exchange, the representation of the Dutch painting of the Golden age is brought out in strong relief in contemporary novels. Among the reasons for the particular interest of the novelists in this school of painting, can be found : its innovating strength, its profuse production, its closeness with the world of the novel ; and also, among he crowd of talented little masters, the patronage of some legendary figures now seen as the beacons of the artistic universe : Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Having forced its way into the novel with Balzac, Dutch painting is then seen in Gautier's and the Goncourts'work, and holds a high rank in Remembrance of Things Past : Rembrandt is indisputably recognized as a genius, and Proust bas highly contributed to the recognition of Vermeer's excellence. Dutch painters may sometimes be met in the work of some acknowledged authors, but are mostly represented in the recent popular editions. This study deals with the status bestowed on to the description by French and English novels since Proust, with the means used to involve the painting - as an object - in the narrative dynamic, with the way the legendary figure of the painters is perpetuated or bent, and in the end, with what's become today of the artist's novel

La thèse, s’appuyant sur le fonds de motets à grand chœur conservés à la bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, tente de répondre à la problématique de la pratique musicale lyonnaise au XVIIIe siècle. Les quatre-vingt dix-neuf manuscrits et imprimés conservés se présentent sous forme de partitions ou de parties séparées et viennent pour la plupart de l’ancienne académie des beaux arts ou Concert. La première partie présente les cadres d’exécution du Grand motet à Lyon, dont le Concert, actif entre 1713 et 1773, mais aussi l’éphémère académie des Jacobins, la cérémonie annuelle du vœu pour le salut du roi Louis XV, les fêtes et réjouissances publiques et les concerts spirituels. Le corpus des motets conservés à Lyon est l’objet d’une analyse rigoureuse : la deuxième partie s’attache au catalogue de l’académie, au support musical (papiers à musique, filigranes et graphies musicales), ainsi qu’aux éléments musicaux dont témoignent les sources. La troisième partie présente le répertoire lyonnais du genre. This thesis is founded on the corpus of french “grands motets” which are part of the collection of the Lyon public library, and tries to explain the question of musical practice in Lyon in the 18th century. The ninety-nine manuscripts and engraved sources conserved in the collection are scores and material which come mostly from the ancient “académie des beaux-arts”, also known as Concert. The first part of the thesis presents the context of Grand motet performances in Lyon, namely the Concert, which was active from 1713 to 1773, the short-lived “académie des Jacobins”, the yearly ceremony of the vow for salvation of the king Louis XV, and also public festivities and spiritual concerts. The corpus of motets conserved in Lyon is the subject of a rigorous analysis: the second part is dedicated to the catalogue of the Concert, the musical support (music papers, watermarks and musical handwritings) and to musical elements which appeared in the sources. The third part presents Lyon’s repertory of the motet genre. Half of the corpus is made up of Lalande’s works; most of the composers are from the Court or the capital, but there are musicians from other French provinces (Pétouille, Valette de Montigny, …) and also from Lyon (Estienne, Bergiron du Fort-Michon, Belouard…). The specific nature of the treatment of the motet in Lyon is brought to the fore by a comparison of the sources, while local particularities appear, like the composition by “fragments”. This study shows that if Lyonnais music belonged to its time, it nevertheless developed its own characteristics

This project is the final work as a part of the MSc. Finance degree at Lisbon School of Economics and Management (ISEG). Students can choose to write a master thesis or write an equity research of a chosen company. The project is structured after ISEG's guidelines and the CFA institutes research report recommendations. I choose to analyze Micron Technology Inc. because of my interest in the technology sector, especially the semiconductor industry. The industry displays a lot of special traits like cyclicality and extreme capital requirements, which was both educational and demanding to analyze.

Three tools for the rapid prototyping of micron and sub-micron scale devices are presented. These tools represent methods for the manufacture of PEMS, or Printed micro Electro Mechanical Systems, and are enabled because they exploit the novel properties of nanocrystalline materials and their interactions with energetic beams. UV contact mask lithography was used to directly pattern metallic nanocrystals on glass and polyimide surfaces without vacuum or etching processes or the use of photoresist layers. Direct electron beam lithography of nanocrystalline metals was used to pattern multiple layer, multiple material, structures with minimum feature sizes of 100nm. Finally a micro-mirror array based selective laser sintering apparatus was built for the rapid, maskless patterning of PEMS. This tool was used to directly pattern metal structures, and for the rapid manufacture of elastomeric stamps for "nano embossing". Minimum feature sizes under 10 microns were achieved and routes to 2 micron features described. Processing time was reduced to hours from the weeks for traditional photomask / photolithography based systems. These tools are examined in the greater context of rapid prototyping technologies.

Characterization of micron and sub-micron size particles requires the simultaneous measurement of the joint particle property distribution (JPPD). The JPPD is comprised of particle size, shape, orientation, composition, optical properties, and surface properties. Measurement of each of the particle properties independently is a difficult task and it has been only partially successful. To determine as many particle properties as possible using optical methods it is necessary to simultaneously measure all aspects of the interaction of the incident light with the particles of interest. This approach leads to the concept of multidimensional spectroscopy suggested by Prof. Garcia-Rubio. Dr. Bacon proved the proposition by developing and testing a prototype multianglemultiwavelength (MAMW) spectrometer proposed by Prof. Garcia-Rubio. However, the prototype MAMW spectrometer has limitations in the amount of information it can obtain because of strong absorption of deep UV light and detector saturation due to the use of optical fibers and single integration time for the CCD detector. The Integrated UV-VIS MAMW spectrometer has been developed to overcome the limitations of the prototype MAMW spectrometer. Improvements have become possible through the use of UV lenses and integration time multiplexing (ITM). The Integrated UV-VIS MAMW spectrometer has the capabilities to perform low angle scattering measurements starting from 4o with simultaneous detection of multiwavelength light from 200 nm to 820 nm, UV-VIS transmission spectroscopy, and frequency domain fluorescence spectroscopy. Following the development, possible sources of errors were analyzed and data calibration procedures have been established to ensure the validity and reproducibility of the measurement results. The capabilities of the Integrated UV-VIS MAMW spectrometer were tested by measuring UV-VIS MAMW spectra of polystyrene standards. The measured UV-VIS MAMW spectra clearly show differences due to particle size, shape, and compositional changes. Measurements of the UV-VIS MAMW spectra of sickled whole blood samples demonstrate that particle shape and compositional changes can be detected simultaneously. These results confirmed that the Integrated UV-VIS MAMW spectrometer could be a powerful tool for the characterization of micron and sub-micron size particles. Alternate approaches to enhance these capabilities further, i.e., the development of a new multidimensional MAMW spectrometer, are also described.

Ce travail porte sur le contrôle électrohydrodynamique (EHD) des écoulements et plus particulièrement sur la mise au point d'une méthode de visualisation ainsi que sur le développement d'actionneurs. Dans une première partie, une analyse bibliographique rappelle les principes fondamentaux de l'EHD. Dans le deuxième chapitre, la méthode de vélocimétrie par image de particules (PIV) est adaptée au cas des écoulements EHD. La validité des mesures PIV en présence d'un champ électrique est analysée sur un écoulement de référence : le panache chargé bidimensionnel. Ensuite, dans le troisième chapitre, deux actionneurs utilisant deux techniques différentes d'injection sont examinés. Le premier actionneur étudié est basé sur la configuration lame-plan. La comparaison du jet 2D plan obtenu avec différents écoulements classiques de la mécanique des fluides permet de souligner les particularités du système. Les résultats obtenus permettent d'envisager des applications dans l'industrie aérospatiale. Le second actionneur utilise l'injection à barrière diélectrique. L'étude du comportement à l'aide de la méthode PIV a montré que le flux induit se comporte principalement comme un jet de paroi. Dans le chapitre quatre, l'actionneur est ensuite placé dans un injecteur afin d'obtenir la pulvérisation d'une nappe de carburant. Les différents paramètres testés montrent l'efficacité de la méthode. En conclusion, les deux actionneurs EHD ont montré leurs capacités à agir sur un liquide. Cette technique a été appliquée avec succès à la pulvérisation d'une nappe de carburant. Elle est particulièrement intéressante en aéronautique dans le cas où un écoulement externe d'air ne peut être utilisé
This work is a study of the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) control of fluid flows, more particularly, an adaptation of a visualization method and the development of EHD actuators. In a first part, the general points of the EHD principles are presented. Then, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method is adapted on EHD flows. Its validity is discussed in the presence of an electric field and analyzed on a typical EHD flow: the two-dimensional charged plume. Afterwards, in the third part, two actuators using two different injection techniques are examined. The first actuator is based on the blade-plate geometry. The comparison of the generated 2D jet with classical fluid mechanics flows underlines the advantages of the system. The results obtained with this actuator allocate several applications in the aerospace industry. The second actuator uses the dielectric barrier injection. The study of its behavior with the PIV method has shown that the induced flow is similar to a wall jet. In the fourth chapter, an EHD actuator is embedded in a fuel injector in order to pulverize a liquid sheet. The tested parameters show the efficiency of this method. In conclusion, both EHD actuators have shown their ability to act on a liquid. This technique was applied on the atomization of a fuel liquid sheet. It is particularly interesting in aeronautics in the case where an external air flow cannot be applied

Our research is the first in-depth study in the use of the Micron Automata Processor, a novel re-configurable streaming co-processor which is purpose-built to execute thousands of Non-deterministic Finite Automata (NFA) in parallel. By design, this processor is well-suited to accelerate applications which need to find all occurrences of thousands of complex string-patterns in the input data. We have validated this by implementing two such applications, one from network security and the other from bioinformatics, both of which are significantly faster than their state-of-art counterparts. Our research has also widened the scope of the applications which can be accelerated through this processor by finding ways to quickly program any generic graph into it and then search for hard to find features like maximal-cliques and Hamiltonian paths. These applications and algorithms have yielded valuable design-inputs for next generation of the chip which is currently in design phase. We hope that this work paves the way to the early adoption of this upcoming architecture and to efficient solution of some of the currently computationally challenging problems.

As the demand for high performance small electronic devices has increased, heat removal from these devices for space use is approaching critical limits. A heat pipe is a promising device to enhance the heat removal performance due to the phase change phenomena for space thermal management system. Even though a heat pipe has a big potential to remove the thermal energy from a high heat flux source, the heat removal performance of heat pipes cannot be predicted well since the first principle of evaporation has not been established. The purpose of this study is to establish a method to apply the evaporation model based on the statistical rate theory for engineering application including vapor-liquid-structure intermolecular effect. The evaporation model is applied to the heat pipe performance analysis through a pressure balance and an energy balance in the loop heat pipe.

For optoelectronic devices submicron precision is required to optimally couple the laser source with the optical fibre. Laser welding is used because of its inherent attributes of accuracy, strength, cleanliness and minimised heat affected zone and structural changes. Due to the rapid solidification of the welded parts post welding residual stresses occur which can lead to a post weld shift between the aligned components and can significantly reduce the light coupling efficiency. Submicron misalignment induced due to the welding process can result in significant power loss. This is a serious and common issue in the manufacture of optoelectronic components and affects production rates. The aim of this work is the development of a methodology that can estimate the residual stresses in the weld piece and to optimise the process by locating the optimal site for micro laser welding. The aim establishes the research question which was addressed by nine objectives. The first eight objectives are elements that comprise the Optoelectronic Packaging Interfaces for Sub-Micron Alignment (OPISA) project. The final objective is the dissemination of this work. Finite element models were developed and used with design of experiments (DoE) statistical technique. This was used to investigate how the key process parameters influence the resultant stress in the optical fibre and to develop a predictive surrogate model. The surrogate model was used with Monte Carlo simulations to determine the fibre stress variation when uncertainty and variation of the design variables are accounted for. The Monte Carlo simulations predicted fibre stress response values which were used to understand how the uncertainties of the input design variables propagate into uncertainty and variation of fibre stress. The surrogate model was used in a sensitivity and risk analysis. The capability analysis of the welding process was also investigated. The original finding of this work is the development of a methodology that fulfils the aim. The work successfully demonstrated that the current industry weld spot location generate 180MPa of post weld stress in the optical fibre. Using the OPISA methodology the optimal weld locations generate 57.6MPa of post weld stress in the optical fibre.

The micron-scale manufacturing industry has grown to hundreds of billions of dollars since the advent of the transistor in 1947. Increasing demands for integration of surface mount components, greater use of portable electronic devices, and miniaturized medical diagnostic devices have given rise to the need for methods of fabricating and assembling micron-scale discrete components. Development of reliable non-contact assembly methods requires thorough understanding of electro-mechanics, surface adhesion, and gravitational forces acting on micron- scale objects. The impact of such a study will spread beyond microelectronics, and will also have broad significance in the development of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) for diverse applications such as biological assays, drug delivery devices, and tools for high throughput combinatorial materials development. This thesis will discuss methods for and challenges in fabrication, manipulation, and assembly of discrete micron-scale objects. The impact of these issues will be illustrated for the development of a micro-dispensing system used to manipulate microgram quantities of dry granular substances for combinatorial materials development. This method provides a model system to explore the forces on micron-scale objects, and is important in its own right as it will introduce a new range of materials that may benefit from combinatorial development. The applicability of traditional methods for computing dielectrophoretic forces on micron scale objects in the presence of spatially non-uniform electric fields will be discussed for the case of closely-spaced, interacting spheres.
(cont.) A dipole approximation model will be presented to quantitatively illustrate the limitations of existing techniques for calculating these forces, and to aid in explaining the observed motion of multiple interacting particles.

Using Magic and the results of the HSPICE simulations, I explore transistor topologies with different ratios of nFets to pFets. An analysis on the technology shows important characteristics for digital systems and how they relate to the explored transistor topologies.

Sub-micron patterning is fundamental to the fabrication of numerous devices Traditional commercial manufacturing methods either lack the resolution needed to attain the appropriate size or are prohibitively expensive due to low throughput or the necessity of expensive equipment. Imprint lithography is a rapid, inexpensive alternative to making sub-micron features that can be tailored to work with a variety of materials. Imprint lithography, while traditionally used with pure polymers has been tailored to be used with nanoparticle-polymer hybrid films. This work has achieved high-fidelity pattern transfer onto polymer-nanoparticle hybrid films with feature sizes as small as 250 nm. The polymer-nanoparticle hybrid was fabricated by creating a liquid suspension of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in a solvent. The ZnO particles were functionalized by adding nonanoic acid in order to facilitate the dispersion of the particles in a non-polar solvent. This suspension was spread onto substrate, imprinted with a patterned stamp, allowed to dry, and was demolded. The final result was features ranging from 250 nm to 1 μm in size with good fidelity as determined by the accuracy of the feature replication and the surface roughness of the overall sample. The effect of the ZnO content as well as the method of combining the suspension components on the feature fidelity was studied. In general, it was found that feature fidelity is acceptable up to a dry-film composition of 15 vol% ZnO and that feature sizes above 500 nm were more tolerant of higher solids loading. The same imprint lithography method was also used to pattern a polymer-derived SiOC glass. The SiOC was shown to be have interesting shrinkage properties where the feature-level linear shrinkage was up to 5% more than that of the bulk. The features were shown to be stable during pyrolysis up to 1000oC and stable at operating temperatures up to 1000oC. A constant number Monte Carlo simulation was used to describe the suspension behavior to confirm the empirical results from the physical experiments. The effects of Van der Waals forces, steric stabilization, depletion flocculation, as well as the physical impediment of entangled polymer chains were considered. A similar agglomeration behavior was shown in the simulations compared to the physical experiments. This thesis shows that polymer-nanoparticle hybrid films are a compatible material for imprint lithography using appropriate suspension parameters. This is very important for a variety of applications and devices. Using imprint lithography to make these devices makes them cheaper and more accessible to the commercial market and can make a large number of theoretical devices a reality.

Sub-micron patterning is an integral part of making many modern technologies such as memory storage devices or integrated circuits. As this technology becomes smaller and smaller, the limiting factor for making these devices has become the ability to manufacture effectively at the appropriate scale. Traditional commercial manufacturing methods lack the resolution needed to attain small enough features. Manufacturing methods that can make small enough features are often either extremely expensive or offer incomplete control of the feature morphology. Imprint lithography is a high-throughput, inexpensive alternative to making sub-micron features that can be tailored to work with a variety of materials. Imprint lithography is simple process in which a patterned stamp is pressed into a softened film of material in order to transfer the pattern of the stamp onto that material. Traditionally, imprint lithography works best with polymers and researchers have struggled to pattern nanoparticle-based materials. This work has achieved high-fidelity pattern transfer onto polymer-nanoparticle hybrid films with feature sizes on the same order as the polymer films found reported in literature. The polymer-nanoparticle hybrid was realized by creating a liquid suspension of functionalized ZnO nanoparticles and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in a solvent. The ZnO particles were functionalized by adding nonanoic acid, allowing the normally polar particles to disperse in the non-polar solvent needed to dissolve the PMMA. This suspension was spread onto a glass substrate, imprinted with a patterned stamp, allowed to dry, and was demolded. The final result was the successful transfer of features ranging from 250 nm to 1 μm in size with good fidelity. The effect of the ZnO content as well as the method of combining the suspension components on the feature fidelity was studied. To help prove the broad applicability of this imprint method, it was adapted for use with polymer-derived ceramics. Additionally, a computer simulation was developed to help understand the behavior of the nanoparticle-polymer suspension during the imprint process.

Creating an IC (Integrated Circuit) can be very time consuming if high flexibility of the construction is demanded. This report will try to solve this problem by creating own standard cell libraries, which in turn are more flexible since the user designs them. Having these libraries makes it possible to map VHDL or Verilog code to those libraries, using them instead of predefined cell libraries. The procedure of creating the libraries is quite time consuming, and thus the possibilities of making that procedure automatic, or as automatic as possible, has been examined. Unfortunately some manual labour has to be done, butthe process can be speeded up a lot by making parts of it automatic.

Over the past decade, low power, energy efficient VLSI design has been the focal point of active research and development. The rapid technology scaling, the growing integration capacity, and the mounting active and leakage power dissipation are contributing to the growing complexity of modern VLSI design. Careful power planning on all design levels is required. This dissertation tackles the low-power, low-energy challenges in deep sub-micron technologies on the architecture and circuit levels. Voltage scaling is one of the most efficient ways for reducing power and energy. For ultra-low voltage operation, a new circuit technique which allows bulk CMOS circuits to work in the sub-0. 5V supply territory is presented. The threshold voltage of the slow PMOS transistor is controlled dynamically to get a lower threshold voltage during the active mode. Due to the reduced threshold voltage, switching speed becomes faster while active leakage current is increased. A technique to dynamically manage active leakage current is presented. Energy reduction resulting from using the proposed structure is demonstrated through simulations of different circuits with different levels of complexity. As technology scales, the mounting leakage current and degraded noise immunity impact performance especially that of high performance dynamic circuits. Dual threshold technology shows a good potential for leakage reduction while meeting performance goals. A model for optimally selecting threshold voltages and transistor sizes in wide fan-in dynamic circuits is presented. On the circuit level, a novel circuit level technique which handles the trade-off between noise immunity and energy dissipation for wide fan-in dynamic circuits is presented. Energy efficiency of the proposed wide fan-in dynamic circuit is further enhanced through efficient low voltage operation. Another direct consequence of technology scaling is the growing impact of interconnect parasitics and process variations on performance. Traditionally, worst case process, parasitics, and environmental conditions are considered. Designing for worst case guarantees a fail-safe operation but requires a large delay and voltage margins. This large margin can be recovered if the design can adapt to the actual silicon conditions. Dynamic voltage scaling is considered a key enabler in reducing such margin. An on-chip process identifier to recover the margin required due to process variations is described. The proposed architecture adjusts supply voltage using a hybrid between the one-time voltage setting and the continuous monitoring modes of operation. The interconnect impact on delay is minimized through a novel adaptive voltage scaling architecture. The proposed system recovers the large delay and voltage margins required by conventional systems by closely tracking the actual critical path at anytime. By tracking the actual critical path, the proposed system is robust and more energy efficient compared to both the conventional open-loop and closed-loop systems.

Friction between nanoscale objects has been a subject of great interest and intense research effort for the last two decades. However, the vast majority of the work done in this area has focused upon the sliding friction between two rigid, atomically smooth surfaces. Thus the parameter most explored has been the corrugation in the atomic potentials and how this affects the force required to slide one object across another. In truth, many nanoscale objects whose translation force is of practical interest are more spherical in nature. We hypothesize that the factors that determine the translation force will be related, not only to the interfacial adhesion, but also to the mechanical properties of the translating object and its underlying surface. The dependence on these quantities of the friction is not known. In this dissertation we have utilized Atomic Force Microscopy and Force Spectroscopy to study the tribological properties of submicron scale polymeric particles to explore how the friction between these submicron spherical objects translating over planar substrates is related to interfacial energy and the mechanical properties for these particles. A technique for modifying the mechanical properties was developed and used to provide a set of samples over which we had control of the elastic modulus without corresponding changes in the chemical bonds. The modified mechanical properties were tested against the Flory-Rehner theory. Lateral force microscopy was used to measure the force required to translate asymmetric, nanoscale particles of controlled size, surface chemistry and moduli. Silicon wafers were used as the substrate. The effects of work of adhesion, elastic modulus of polystyrene microspheres, and contact radius between particle and substrate have been studied for the different modes of particle translation under an external force.

Transmission measurements using six wavelengths were made through the edges of plumes for solid propellant rocket motors using various propellants and motor geometries. The average values obtained for the aluminum oxide particles were a Sauter mean diameter of 0.30 + /- .02 microns, an index of refraction of 1.64 + /- .04 and standard deviation of 1.52 + /- .12 for the assumed monomodal, log-normal size distribution. The results indicated that the small aluminum oxide particles in the plume edge were gamma-AL203, independent of propellant composition, motor operating conditions and nozzle geometry. The good correlation of the data indicated that the small particles can be adequately represented by a monomodal, log-normal distribution
