The family Janiridae is reviewed, primarily using the published literature, as a step for revising the systematics of the Asellota. The history of janirid taxonomy is reviewed, and all taxa that have been attributed to the family are listed and discussed. A new composition for the family is provided with synonymies and references to all genera. The genera included in the Janiridae are: Austrofilius Hodgson, Caecianiropsis Menzies & Petit, Caecijaera Menzies, Carpias Richardson, Ectias Richardson, Hawaianira Miller, Heterias Richardson, Iais Bovallius, Ianiropsis Sars, Iathrippa Bovallius,

The interstitial stygobiotic isopods of the genus Microcharon (Crustacea) are diversified in Morocco. A new species, M. ourikensis, is described. The new species shows some original characters for this genus: large size, strong elongation in the first male pleopod exopodal inner lobe, 5-dentate mandibular pars incisiva, and 5 spines on the last mandibular palp segment. The species is a member of the Ibero-Maghrebin messoulii group. It is an endemic representative of the Ourika valley groundwater in the Moroccan High Atlas. It derives from a littoral marine ancestor which could have colonized t

The interstitial crustacean isopods of the genus Microcharon (Microparasellidae) are relatively well-diversified and widely distributed in Morocco. A new species, M. boutini, is described. The 5-dentate mandibular pars incisiva, the elongated inner lobe of the exopodite, and the reduced armature of the first male pleopod characterize the species. M. boutini n. sp. belongs to the monophyletic messoulii group of species, the most primitive representatives of the genus. The interstitial stygobites of the genus Microcharon (Crustacea, Isopoda, Microparasellidae) are highly diversified in Morocco, especially in the High Atlas. A new species from the North Saharan platform is described. A phylogeny of the isopod family Janiridae and genera from presumptive outgroups, Acanthaspidiidae, Joeropsididae and Microparasellidae is estimated. Characters were gathered from the published literature, and assembled into a data matrix for cladistic analysis. The data, when evaluated with heuristic search algorithms, yielded eight most-parsimonious trees, none of which supported the monophyly of the Janiridae. To evaluate the impact of homoplasy, characters with a rescaled consistency less than 0.1 were deleted, resulting in four somewhat different trees that were non-monophyletic for the j
