Streszczenie:
The essay offers an interpretation of P. F. Strawson’s “Freedom and Resentment” on which attributions of moral responsibility presuppose a practice of holding people morally responsible for their actions, and what explains the practice is our liability to such reactive attitudes as resentment and indignation. The interpretation is offered to correct a common misinterpretation of Strawson’s essay. On this common misinterpretation, attributions of moral responsibility are implicit in the reactive attitudes of resentment and indignation, and consequently our liability to these attitudes cannot explain these attributions. The reason this is a misinterpretation of Strawson’s essay is that Strawson’s compatibilist solution to the free will problem requires that our liability to the reactive attitudes be conceptually prior to our attributions of moral responsibility.

Accurate interpretation of electroencephalograms requires knowledge and experience with a wide range of findings. Misinterpretation is common and may result from insufficient inexperience, incomplete training, or simply human error. However, misinterpretation may also arise from the relative rarity of some findings, and also from the evolution and necessary change in our understanding of the significance of these findings. One of the most common sources of reader error is in dealing with patterns that have some hallmarks of abnormalities but are actually normal findings. We refer to these findings as variants, or “patterns of unclear significance.” This chapter reviews several of the common and uncommon patterns (fast or slow alpha variant, alpha squeak, rhythmic midtemporal theta bursts of drowsiness, midline theta rhythm, subclinical rhythmic electrographic discharge in adults, 14- and 6-Hz positive bursts, 6-Hz spike-and-wave bursts, benign sporadic sleep spikes, wickets, frontal arousal rhythm), emphasizing characteristics that can optimize interpretation.

The second quote, from a 1904 editorial in JAMA, certainly holds true today, but of course, editors do consider manuscripts that are poorly written but are of good science, although they may feel less confident about a paper’s content if the presentation is sloppy. Also, authors whose first language is not that of the journal should still be given consideration. In particular, editors should not lose the author’s voice, especially in informal usage. Still, scientific writing should be as precise as possible to avoid misinterpretation. This section provides a selection of correct and preferred terms...

It is argued that Samuel Moyn’s critique of Tasioulas’s ‘Towards a Philosophy of Human Rights’ is undermined by an overly ambitious conception of the supposed goals of philosophical enquiry into human rights and by a serious misinterpretation of the nature of Tasioulas’s ‘orthodox’ theory of human rights as affirming that such rights apply timelessly. With these misconceptions set aside, it becomes clear that a philosophical theory of human rights, such as the orthodox account, can help us illuminate and evaluate the complex realities of contemporary human rights practice, such as the creation of a non-statist and non-legalist human rights framework through the UN’s Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

This chapter deals with oracles, a paradigmatic type of religious communication that cannot be said to accomplish any of the typical aims that otherwise may be taken for granted—such as transmitting information, influencing recipients or observers, or fostering relationships. As Kindt shows, some Greek oracular shrines encouraged misinterpretation by adopting an enigmatic style of expression that mixed ambiguity with vagueness, opacity, and a countervailing impression of divine infallibility; she focuses on this “enigmatic voice” at Delphi, the most famous ancient oracle. She seeks to explain why this voice characterizes some oracles but not others; how it complicates the interpretation of oracular messages; and how oracles confirm, but adjust, the Greeks’ notion of a barely bridgeable gap between human and divine participants in their polytheistic religion.

Streszczenie:
Misuse and misinterpretation of statistics result in statistical biases that affect the quality, clarity, relevance, and implications of communicated scientific information. Statistical tools are often suboptimally used in scientific papers, even in the best journals. The vast majority of published results are statistically significant, and even nonsignificant results are often spun as being important. Inferences based on P-values generate additional misconceptions. It is also common to focus on metrics that are more prone to exaggerated interpretation. Most of these problems are possible to solve or at least improve on. The prevalence of statistical biases has been used in attacks designed to discredit science’s validity. However, the use of rigorous statistical methods and their careful interpretation can be one of the strongest distinguishing features of good science and a powerful tool to sustain science’s integrity.

Most visual illusions involve distorted or altered perception of objects or events or misinterpretation of image information. The discrepancy between what we experience and what is physically present in the world or in the retinal image can be large, surprising, and dramatic. It is much rarer to see things that simply are not there at all. Repetitive stimuli, such as grating patterns or flickering lights, can induce perception of a range of illusory geometric patterns, forms, and movements—during or after exposure to the inducing stimulus. This chapter describes one such illusory phenomenon—the graph-paper effect—a striking illusion of moving, oriented lines and edges; links it to a family of related effects; and offers a general theory for these effects in terms of neural inhibition and disinhibition at the level of the visual cortex.

Stories are very effective means of seduction, and stories allegedly about seduction even more so than others. I will look at three sets of artworks that use allusion to bring in biblical stories and, in the process, change these. Paradoxically, the frequent presence of biblical stories in culture at large also makes them handy tools to subvert their own baggage of misinterpretation. My analysis of three visual artworks is based on what I call a ‘politics of allusion’. An allusion is not a metaphor; instead of replacing one thing with another, an allusion enfolds the alluded into what we see. Allusions operate not on an ‘either/or’ structure but on a ‘both … and’ or ‘as well as’ inclusive model. I will argue that the traditional interpretations of biblical stories can be subverted by the search for allusions.

Streszczenie:
According to the standard interpretation of the First Paralogism, its fallacy is based on a confusion between two meanings of the term ‘subject’, namely that of ‘thinking subject’ and that of ‘subject of predication’. This chapter argues that this interpretation is incorrect and that Kant in fact explains the illusion of cognizing ourselves as thinking substances by a misinterpretation of a certain logico-semantical feature of the representation ‘I’, namely that of non-predicability. This interpretation puts the First Paralogism in accord with the other Paralogisms, all of which are claimed by Kant to stem from a confusion between ‘logical’ and ‘real’ features of the self. It also allows us to relate the chapter on the paralogisms to Kant’s views on the connection between the ideas of pure reason and the progress towards the unconditioned in chains of prosyllogisms.

This book styles itself as “a Sherpa guide to Process and Reality, whose function is to assist the serious reader in grasping the meaning of the text and to prevent falls into misinterpretation.” Although originally published in 1925, Process and Reality has perhaps even more relevance to the contemporary scene in physics, biology, psychology, and the social sciences than it had in the mid-twenties. Hence, its internal difficulty, its quasi-inaccessibility, is all the more tragic, since, unlike most metaphysical endeavors, it is capable of interpreting and unifying theories in the above sciences in terms of an organic world view, instead of selecting one theory as the paradigm and reducing all others to it. Because Alfred North Whitehead is so crucial to modern philosophy, this book plays an important role in making Process and Reality accessible to a wider readership.

This article reviews the impact of Thomas Kuhn’s monograph The Structure of Scientific Revolutions on subsequent work in the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. It identifies the early philosophical reaction to Kuhn’s alleged “relativism” as based on a misinterpretation of his views about incommensurability and argues that the answers to relativistic challenges are already latent in Structure itself. Kuhn’s enduring influence consists in the impetus he gave to studies of the role of values within the sciences, in the recognition of the complexities of episodes of scientific change, in his proposals for understanding how scientific revolutions may change the world in which scientists work (this latter theme was at the center of his thought in the decades after Structure), and, most obviously, in his introduction of the term ‘paradigm’. In articulating that theme, Kuhn can be seen as returning to central ideas in classical pragmatism.

Streszczenie:
Chapter 1, “Out of Context,” in A New Narrative for Psychology, argues that one of the main consequences of the overreliance on variable-centered methods is a misinterpretation of the nature of psychological processes. Although variable-centered research seems to argue that we can understand the process outside of the person and outside of the social world as an abstract entity, this is not really possible. Psychological processes are aspects of subjective experience that have meanings specific to a person who is situated in a definite time and space. The chapter reviews the debate on the stability of personality traits over time and argues that it makes no sense to ask if personality changes or stays the same. Personality doesn’t do anything, but variables are characterized as if they have a life of their own. Outside of the context of the person, one misunderstands what personality is and means.

Streszczenie:
Dryden’s early heroic plays find dramatic potential in early modern natural law debates about sovereignty, and explore the language of contract central to these debates. The Indian Emperour interrogates the context of Spain’s claims to empire in the new world, reflecting the historical moment of England’s growing colonial ambitions. The Conquest of Granada shows how natural law’s metaphors of contract can destabilize an empire from within, as Dryden’s hero Almanzor employs them to contest and divide. Almanzor’s claims connect to an earlier critical exchange between Davenant and Hobbes on the cultural influence of epic romance and theatre in relation to political instability. Dryden’s play, however, works to redeem romance from its association with the misinterpretation of passion and interest in Hobbes’s writing. In The Conquest of Granada, romance and theatre become part of the process of refined law-making, providing a culture of propriety and discrimination which supports the artifice of empire.
