During the second year of excavations at the site the expedition exposed a third phase of occupation (Stratum 3). Abstract Scholars of Greek and Roman art have long recognized that many sculptures that today appear unpainted were originally covered in bright, polychrome paint. In contrast, the hallowed works of China's classical antiquity, the bronzes, are generally believed to have been monochrome works. In recent years, however, many varieties of bronzes have been unearthed with polychrome ornamentation including sacrificial vessels, figural sculptures, mirrors, lamps, weapons, and personal ornaments. An interdisciplinary approach to Late Classic Maya polychrome-painted ceramics from Buenavista del Cayo and Cahal Pech, Belize allows for preliminary observations relevant to a better understanding of elite pottery production and use in the western Belize Valley. The combination of typological and contextual data from archaeological investigations of ceramics along with art-historical stylistic analyses and ceramic-paste chemical-composition data identifies ordinary and special-purpose vessels excavated from palace-midden contexts as having been created in the same elite-oriented or “palace” w

AbstractRecent research carried out at the Maya site of Nakum, located in northeastern Guatemala, has brought about the discovery of a large collection of ceramic artefacts. This substantial assemblage, apart from monochrome ceramics, includes fragments of polychrome vessels that are decorated with elaborate iconographic scenes and painted hieroglyphic texts. Most of them date to the Late Classic period (ca. a.d. 600–800), which represents the peak of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The style of these ceramics, their iconography and accompanying glyphic texts, supplemented in many cases b

As a result of large-scale archaeological excavations of ancient settlements and burial grounds, carried out over the past 25 years in the zone of the lowland part of Karabakh, the number of ceramic finds has increased several times. A significant place in the composition of ceramic products belongs to artistic ceramics: zoomorphic and anthropomorphic vessels, terracotta figurines of people, animals and birds. An exceptional quantity of glazed ceramics was unearthed from the Maroneia cave located on Mt. Ismaros, in Aegean Thrace, north of the homonymous city. It consists mainly of open vessels: Sgraffito, “Black and Green Painted”, “Slip painted” and Monochrome ware. Zeuxippus derivatives comprise the most abundant group, a great amount of which is associated with the local Mikro Pisto workshop in the vicinity. The Mosynopole and Serres workshops are attested too; a unique example belongs to Lemnos workshop. The cave offered a refuge to the Maroneia habitants during the Normans’ raids in 1185, the t
