Streszczenie:
The research work covered the in vitro establishment of Persian lime nodal segments using a twig disinfection protocol, and their culture on Murashige and Skoog (MS) culture media supplemented with antibiotics (Estrepto-Ler® and Rifampicin) and fungicide (Chlorothalonil). The axillary buds production was performed cultured the nodal segments without contamination signs on MS culture media enriched with two cytokinins (6-BAP and Kinetin) at different concentrations. Results showed that 52 % of the nodal segments did not show signs of in vitro contamination when the twig submerged in 20% chlorine for 15 min during disinfection process and nodal segments were grown in MS culture medium supplemented with 2 mg L-1 of Rifampicin and fungicide Chlorothalonil. Interestingly, MS culture medium enriched with 6-BAP (0.5 mg L-1) + Kinetin (0.5 mg L-1) turned out to be the best combination to achieve that 78 % of nodal segments promoted 1 to 2 axillary buds.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Micropropagation of Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess. (Clusiaceae) is a way to overcome difficulties in achieving large-scale plant production, given the recalcitrant nature of the seeds, irregular fructification and absence of natural vegetative propagation of the species. Cultures were established using nodal segments 2 cm in length, obtained from 1-2 year old seedlings, maintained in a greenhouse. Mercury chloride and Plant Preservative Mixture™ were used in the surface sterilizing stage, better results being achieved with Plant Preservative Mixture™ incorporation in culture medium, at any concentration. Polyvinylpyrrolidone, activated charcoal, cysteine, ascorbic acid or citric acid were added to the culture medium to avoid oxidation. After 30 days of culture, polyvinylpirrolidone and ascorbic acid gave better results, eliminating oxidation in most explants. For shoot multiplication, benzylaminopurine was used in concentrations of 4.4 and 8.8 µM in Woody Plant Medium, resulting in an average of 4.43 and 4.68 shoots per explant, respectively, after 90 days. Indole-3-butyric acid and α-naphthalene acetic acid were used to induce root formation, reaching a maximum rooting rate of 24% with 20µM α-naphthalene acetic acid. For acclimatization. the rooted plants were transferred to Plantmax® substrate and cultured in a greenhouse, reaching 79% of survival after 30 days and 60% after one year.

Adventitious shoots developed within 3 weeks from the petiolar stub and, less often, from wounded lamina tissues when leaves excised from nodal cultures of Vitis vinifera L. cvs. French Colombard and Thompson Seedless were cultured on solid Nitsch and Nitsch medium containing BAP at 2 mg·liter-1. The youngest leaf that could be excised, from 1 to 8 mm long, was the most responsive (90% of explants producing shoots compared to 16% for leaf 6). Removal of the lamina from the petiolar stub within the first 3 weeks of culture reduced shoot production. Increase in nodal culture age, without transfer to fresh medium, had no effect on subsequent regeneration from the youngest leaves but did reduce the regeneration frequency of leaves at the next position from 43% to 20%. In regularly subculture nodal cultures, the number of transfers had no effect on subsequent regeneration. Leaves from recently established shoot tip cultures were more responsive than leaves from nodal cultures. The frequency of shoot production was higher in laterally bisected than intact leaves (70% vs. 43%) due to additional regeneration from the distal leaf half at the sites of severed veins. Shoot outgrowth was promoted by the isolation and subculture of regenerating tissue to fresh regeneration medium. Petiolar stub removal promoted de novo shoot organogenesis from the resulting lamina wound. Shoots rooted at a high frequency on Murashige and Skoog medium with 1 mg IA-A/liter and produced morphologically normal plants. Chemical names used: 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP); indole-3-acetic acid (IAA).

Streszczenie:
Shikimic acid is a very important precursor for industrial synthesis of oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) which is used for the antiviral treatment. In this study, callus culture of Ginkgo biloba for shikimic acid production was reported. Callus induced from either leaves or nodal stems of sterilized ginkgo was grown on MS medium supplemented with a combination of plant growth regulators as followed: MS+KD, MS+BD, MS+KN and MS+BN for 90 days. Morphological changes, fresh weight and shikimic acid content of callus in each medium were monitored every 30 days. The result showed that callus cultures from each treatment were morphologically different. It is likely due to explant used for callus induction and type of plant growth regulators added into the medium. Browning effect was noticeably detected from 60 days to 90 days. Moreover, fresh weight and shikimic acid content of callus culture depended on cultivation time, cultivation medium and type of explants used for callus induction. Callus induced from nodal stem grown on MS+BN for 30 days offered the highest fresh weight. For shikimic acid production, the most satisfied quantity of shikimic acid was achieved from callus cultured on MS+KN for 30 days by exploiting nodal stem as explant.

Jasmonates are a group of native plant bioregulators that occur widely in the plant kingdom and exert various physiological activities when applied exogenously to plants. We investigated the effect of free jasmonic acid (JA) on stem and root growth and tuberization of potato in vitro nodal culture. Nodal cuttings of three potato cultivars, Norchip, Red Pontiac, and Russet Burbank, were cultured in 2.5 × 15 cm test tubes containing either nodal culture (MS with 2% sucrose) or tuber-inducing (MS with 8% sucrose and 11.5 μm kinetin) medium. The media were supplemented with JA at 0, 0.1, 0.5 1.0, 5.0, 10.0 and 50 m. The cultures were maintained under a 16-hour photoperiod at 24°C for 6 weeks. Potato cultivars showed different sensitivities to JA in stem growth. Norchip is the most and Red Pontiac the least sensitive cultivar. On the nodal culture medium, stem length of Norchip was promoted at 0.1–5 μm, and inhibited at 10–50 μm of JA, but that of Red Pontiac was promoted by JA at all concentrations tested. The number of nodes increased significantly on media with JA than that on medium without JA. The number of adventitious roots did not, but the lateral roots increased significantly when JA was added to the medium. On tuber-inducing media, stem length and node number did not appear to be affected by addition of JA to the medium. The number of axillary shoots increased significantly on the media with low concentrations of JA (0.1–5 μm). No microtubers formed on both media from all three cultivars in 6 weeks.

The synthesis of this text comes from a contemporary appraisal of the term “the closet” and its current place in culture since the advent of cybernetics. The authors’ assertion is that this metaphor, one that is rooted in the iconography of the late-capitalist home, is in a moment of transition and constant redefinition. In this paper, the authors explore and assess three basic modern manifestations of the homosexual rite of passage and how they have been rendered obsolete, adapted, or in some respects, catalyzed by new media and mobile technology. The charting of these changes is evaluated as a ’nodal’ phenomenon within queer culture and is paired with Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia to better explore the spatial qualities of this shifting circumstance. The closet term is part of a continuum; one marked by intersecting moments of connectivity. In this article, the authors assess the term mainly in relation to a pre-computer era, a personal computer era and a mobile computer/smartphone era.

The hard, strong, very close-grained wood of common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana L.; Ebenaceae) is desirable for specialty products such as golf club heads, percussion sticks, billiard cues, and for wood turnery. The edible fruit of cultivated varieties is sold as pulp for use in puddings, cookies, cakes, and custards. Persimmon is usually propagated by grafting. Own-rooted clonal persimmon could offer several advantages to specialty fruit growers such as elimination of grafting, graft incompatibility issues, and improved rootstocks for variety testing. Four mature, grafted (male and female) persimmon genotypes and one hybrid were used for nodal explant culture. Nodal stem explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 10 μM zeatin, 3% (w/v) sucrose, and 0.7% (w/v) Bacto agar. Explants were routinely transferred to fresh medium every 3 weeks until shoot cultures were established. All nodal explants excised from grafted greenhouse plants produced at least one viable shoot. For in vitro rooting of microshoots, half-strength MS medium with 0, 5, 10, or 15 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), 0.1 g·L−1 phloroglucinol, 3% (w/v) sucrose, and 0.7% (w/v) Bacto agar were tested with a 10-day dark culture treatment followed by culture in the light. Best rooting (14% to 87%) was achieved on medium containing 5 μM IBA for the common persimmon genotypes with means averaging from 0.5 to 3.9 roots per shoot. Ninety-one percent rooting with 5.3 ± 2.6 roots per shoot was achieved for the hybrid persimmon. Rooted plants were successfully acclimatized to the greenhouse.

A study was conducted to evaluate the potential of in vitro techniques for genetic conservation of citrus. A tissue culture system was developed using explants of juvenile `Pineapple' sweet orange. It consisted of: a) establishment of primary cultures from nodal stem segments followed by the recovery of plants in vitro; and b) successive cycles of secondary cultures consisting of the culture of nodal stem segments from in vitro-grown plants, rooting of shoots obtained from nodal stem segments, and recovery of whole plantlets. Two parameters, K and K', based on the multiplication factors of the different stages of primary and secondary cultures are proposed to monitor the system as a potential tool for genetic conservation of citrus. The system also can be successfully used for the conservation of juvenile tissues of two sweet orange varieties [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb.], trifoliate orange [Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Surface sterilization is a vital step in preparation of healthy and viable explants in tissue culture. Most surface contaminants can be eliminated by surface sterilization with a suitable sterilizing agent. The study aimed to present an effective disinfection method for Clinacanthus nutans shoot regeneration using nodal segments. A total of four different sterilization approaches were conducted by treating nodal explants with various concentrations of sterilizing agent. Sterilizing agents used were Rhizophora apiculata Pyroligneous acid (PA), sodium hypochlorite (Clorox) thiophanate-methyl (fungicide), and Mercuric chloride (HgCl2). Nodal explant then was cultured on plant growth regulator-free Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium. This study sterilizing agents revealed that PA showed strong bactericidal activity. However, it led to a high number of fungal contaminations. The pyroligneous acid did not exhibit a strong potential as a disinfectant for C. nutans nodal explant. Overall, HgCl2 exhibits the best reduction in fungal contamination and gives a significant result with thiophanate-methyl fungicide. Surface sterilization with mercuric chloride (0.2%) for 1 hour was the optimum concentration and duration, which resulted in the highest percentage of nodal explant survival and viability. All viable nodal segments developed into shoots. It had been concluded that the best surface sterilization agent was HgCl2.

Streszczenie:
The #noDAPL movement was an Indigenous-led environmental social movement occurring between 2015 and 2017, in which the Standing Rock Sioux and other American Indian tribes comprising the Oceti Sakowin garnered support to oppose the 1,172-mile Dakota Access Pipeline. Pipeline opponents agreed that the pipeline's construction posed a threat to the health and safety of tribal members and other residents of the area and that the pipeline's path crossed previously-designated tribal treaty boundaries, compromising tribal sovereignty. In this body of work, I utilize Facebook data from the Sacred Stone Camp Facebook page to locate and identify collective action frames and core framing tasks, adhering to social movement framing theory. Further, I provide insight into the movement's most used collective action frames and how their use enabled to movement to maintain occupation at protest camps along the Missouri River, garner resources from participants and gain international social support. I also draw on concepts of pan-Indianism and supratribalism to discuss indigenous collective identity, as well as concepts like relational values and Indigenous traditional knowledge to better assess the nuances of Indigenous environmental activism and how this movement evoked discussions of modern day settler colonialism.

Streszczenie:
This PhD Thesis By Publication poses two concepts – ‘cultures of governance’ and the ‘governance of culture’ – as tropes by which to analyse the contemporary condition of Indigenous governance. The thesis publications enable a theoretical understanding of Indigenous governance as being culturally self-referential field of meshed nodal networks, and as also influentially shaped by its intercultural articulation with the governmentality of the Australian state. In doing so, concepts of governance, governmentality, field, power, agency, legitimacy, network, culture and intercultural are investigated and theoretically refined. Eight published papers are presented which have valuable synergies between them. They are laid out under five Parts which focus on particular aspects of governance and governmentality. The publications provide extensive ethnographic evidence and analyses derived from long-term fieldwork undertaken over a period of 37 years in rural, urban and remote Indigenous locations across Australia, as well as with governments and their departments. These provide the bases upon which a cohesive theoretical framework is newly developed by way of the thesis conclusion. On a more pragmatic level, the Conclusion also highlights he significance of that framework for the ongoing relationship between Indigenous Australians and the state, and their practices of governance and governmentality.<br>The following article: Economy and governance in Aboriginal Australia (pp. 175-186). Streszczenie:
This chapter traces the shift from unidirectional Protestant foreign missions at the beginning of the twentieth century to globalized missionary efforts at the end of the century, often fuelled by global migration patterns. These can originate in any country or culture, and end up (along relatively predicable paths dictated by rational markets in education, migration, business, and national interest) in almost any other country. The chapter compares the ‘World Missionary Conference 1910’ in Edinburgh with the 1989 ‘Global Consultation on World Evangelization’ held in Manila, as ‘bookends’ for a period of rapid change and indigenization of Christianity around the world. It points to four key vectors as determinative: the rise of short-term missional experientialism, the co-option of non-missionary globalized settings, diasporic mission, and conversion as resistance. The counter-logical global upsurge of grass-roots Christianity after Edinburgh 1910 demonstrates that people appropriating new futures start from where they are, and go to unpredictable places.

As the British expanded their empire from near colonies such as Ireland to those in remote corners of the world, such as Barbados, Ceylon and Australia, they left a trail of physical remains in every parish where settlement occurred. Between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, gravestones and elaborate epitaphs documented identity and attachment to both colony and metropole. This collection by leading migration historians and archaeologists seeks to explore what this evidence tells the twenty-first century reader about the attachment remote British and Irish migrants had to ‘home’ in life and death. As well as making public statements about imperial allegiance, the bereaved carved in stone the reunification of disparate families in death. Such mourning left an important seam of material culture that has hitherto received scant comparative analysis by scholars. Focusing on nodal areas of British and Irish trade around the world, each chapter reveals the social, religious, political and personal milieu of remote migrants in all continents where the British and Irish lived, worked and ultimately died.

The economic history of early India is a rich and diverse area of study, covering agricultural developments, trade, markets, occupation and professional groups, urbanization and the institutions that govern the economy. Recent research has expanded our understanding of the processes of transformation of the economy in different temporal contexts within the Indian sub-continent. They have particularly led us to explore connected histories given the trans-continental trading networks and movements of people from very early times. This volume seeks to draw attention to this vast and unexplored terrain in the economic history of early India, by bringing together essays on a new and rich historiography. Essays in the volume cover neglected regions, economic processes and structures. Scholars have looked at questions of settlements, crops that were cultivated and market orientation. Essays cover material culture and provide insights into how early Indians lived, what kinds of activities they were engaged in, and how they organised their production activities within and outside domestic spaces. Further the volume bring new insights on hierarchy of settlement types, nature of exchange, and the significance of a nodal site in exchange networks. Maritime history as well as the understanding of trade in its varied forms and manifestations are covered in several essays.

Abstract Large European rivers are flowing through cultural landscapes. Their floodplains are usually narrowed, often keeping remnants of the natural vegetation in strips, with nodal extensions only at sites extremely prone to flooding. Sava River, the largest Danube tributary by its water flow, is still well preserved considering its free streaming from Slovenia, downstream borders between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, to its confluence in Belgrade, Serbia. The river corridor is functioning as a lifeline connecting different habitats. It is essential to wildlife migrations, seed transfers, and gene flow for both native and introduced species. Among the latter, many have been recognized to have invasive behavior. Invasive alien species (IAS), being recognized as the second most important cause of biodiversity loss on the global scale, are thus exploiting the river corridor, invading the natural habitats, and reducing the transnational river corridor connectivity. A platform for joint cross-border actions against IAS was developed in the Danube Transnational Project. Differences in legislative frameworks in the economies along the Sava River are still hampering its full implementation, giving the invasive species both time and space to further develop their populations, suppressing the native species, and increasing their influence in terms of ecological, social, and economic impacts.

Since the early 19th century, Chinese languages pop cultures have been financed, produced, distributed, circulated and consumed among ethnic Chinese population in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Illustrative of this highly integrated industrial structure is the Shaw Brothers, a pillar in this Chinese languages media industry. Shaw Brothers started business in Shanghai in the 1920s, moved its financial operation to Singapore in the 1950s, produced films in Hong Kong and distributed and exhibited them in its network of cinemas throughout Southeast Asia in the 1960s and now produces and distributes television dramas throughout the same network. This ethnic Chinese population arguing share more knowledge about Chinese languages pop culture than about Confucianism, especially among those below forty years old. The greater cultural China is thus more accurately represented as a Pop Culture China, a decentred, multi-lingual, multi-nodal relatively well integrated cultural economy that operates under the presumed ‘sameness’ of a ‘common’ Chinese cultural heritage, then being unified by some grand philosophical-civilizational tradition. Pop Culture China is made manifest daily through the entertainment pages of the mass media in the constitutive locations.

Abstract This essay reveals how throughout Leaves of Grass, gardens matter as material geographies that crystallize a core concern of Walt Whitman’s work—how to live in and with the nonhuman world. Seemingly at odds with Whitman’s guiding interest in undomesticated nature, gardens nonetheless form a nodal point of his ecopoetics. Generally in the nineteenth century, gardens signified genteel culture, based on control of nature, ornamentation, and ownership. Whitman instead turns gardens into liminal realms of wildness, work, and mobility, recasting them as utopian sites of ecological and social possibility. Surprisingly, his transformed, transformative gardens profoundly resonate with environmentally insightful discussions of horticulture that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century and have resurfaced in the twenty-first. However, unlike environmentalists then and now, Whitman refrains from suggesting that such natural-cultural spaces provide a solution to the conflicts between ecological perspectives and the democratic ideals they serve to negotiate. Instead, he leaves the tensions and incongruities inherent to gardens fully intact.

Significant advancements in micropropagation methods facilitate the commercial cultivation of avocado (Persea americana Mill), a remarkable tropical and sub-tropical fruit, highly recommended for its nutritional value. Since high quality, true-to-type planting materials are required to promote the commercial producti on of avocado, this study was conducted with the objective of investigati ng an eff ective sterilization method to control both epiphytes and endophytes present in nodal explants of P. americana cv. ‘Pollock’ to optimize in vitro establishment measures which will lead to popularize its micropropagation. In this study, nodal segments of approximately 10 cm from soft wood stem cuttings of P. americana cv ‘Pollock’ were used to obtain explants. The effects of 10%, 20%, and 30% concentrations of sodium hypochlo- rite (NaOCl) were evaluated, with exposure durations of 10 and 20 minutes, to determine their efficacy in eliminating epiphytes during vitro establishment. Additionally, the nodal explants were treated with 100 mg/L Augmenti n™ for 20 - minutes and 30 - minutes periods respectively, as a final dip before culturing to eradicate endophytes. The effects of three different culture media, half-strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, Woody Plant Medium (WPM), and Gamborg’s medium (B5) were also investigated. The highest survival rate (83%) of nodal segments was achieved when explants were sterilized with 20% Na- OCl for 20 minutes, followed by a final sterilization step involving a 30-minute dip in Augmenti n™, and subsequently cultured in WPM medium. Gypsophila (Gypsophila paniculata L.), commonly known as baby’s breath, is a very popular ornamental plant in the floriculture industry. Gypsophilas are often grown as ornamental plants in many European gardens. They are valuable as a cut flower in floristry to add as a filler to flower bouquets. A protocol for the regeneration of Gypsophila paniculata L. using nodal explants grown in the field was established. The induction of multiple shoots was best obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1 mg L-1 BAP and 0.5 mg L-1 NAA. After 8 weeks of initial culture, multiple shoots were regenerated from the explants and transferred to the rooting medium with different concentrations of IBA and NAA. The highest number of roots was obtained from the MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg L-1 IBA and 0.5 mg L-1 NAA within 6 weeks. Rooted plantlets were hardened and established in pots with 89% highest survival rate.

Even though Manihot esculenta (Cassava) has been identified worldwide as a key starchy crop, it contains a rich number of phytochemicals that can be used for various purposes. However, conventional propagation methods have led to an increase in viral diseases, creating a problematic condition when using this species for the pharmaceutical industry. There is a lack of reliable protocols for the micropropagation of cassava (Var. MU51) for mass production in industrial use. Therefore, this work aimed to develop a reliable method for the mass production of healthy, virus-free Manihot esculenta (Var. MU51) for industrial applications. The focus was on creating a micropropagation protocol for the variety MU51, involving optimal surface sterilization and effective hormonal combination for shoot proliferation and ideal media for meristem culture. According to the study, a 10% Clorox solution, coupled with an exposure duration of 15 minutes, manifested the most noteworthy success rate (78 %) in preventing contamination (P &lt; 0.05). In the context of the proliferation of shoots from M. esculenta nodes, the application of 0.5 mg/l BAP + 0.1 mg/l NAA as well as 1mg/l BAP + 0.1mg/l NAA following 5 weeks, the nodal segments that underwent shoot proliferation exhibited comparable growth in both treatments without significant difference (P &gt; 0.05). The initiation of meristem growth was carried out utilizing a solid Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium fortified with a blend of 0.1 mg/l BAP, 0.25 mg/l GA3, and 0.2 mg/l NAA, in addition to a standard MS medium. The hormonal MS medium demonstrated a significantly superior survival rate (87%) (P &lt; 0.05). The current investigation underscores the optimal conditions for mitigating contamination risks and promoting desirable outcomes in M. esculenta shoot proliferation and meristem growth, thereby contributing valuable insights to the fi eld. Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder that was first described by Destombes in 1965 and subsequently classified by Rosai and Dorfman in 1969 as a distinct clinical and pathological condition. It is a self-limiting disease process characterized by a non-Langerhans cell benign proliferation that usually involves the lymph nodes, but can affect extranodal sites. Classic RDD most commonly presents as massive bilateral painless cervical lymphadenopathy, with associated fever and loss of weight in children and young adults. Despite the predilection for the head and neck lymph nodes, RDD may present extranodal case in 43% of cases and in rare instances (around 23% of extranodal cases) only extranodal involvement can be described. The more common extranodal sites include the skin, nasal cavity, bone, orbital tissue, and the central nervous system. RDD involving the breast tissue is extremely rare, with fewer than 50 reported cases and it is important to recognize because it can mimic malignancy. Patients with involvement of the breast can present with painless palpable mass and ill-defined sensation or abnormal mammogram. The radiologic presentation of RDD lesions can have a notable diversity, but commonly have an appearance that is indistinguishable from breast carcinoma on mammogram and US. Therefore, the main diagnostic modality is histopathologic evaluation, with the features of marked dilatation of sinuses due to accumulation of activated histiocytes that demonstrate variable degrees of emperipolesis, along with the immunohistochemical characteristics like S100+, CD68+, and CD1a−. Management of RDD depends on the symptoms and it can be conservative with observation, as long as some cases have spontaneous regression, especially in the classic nodal disease. Surgical excision may be indicated in unifocal extranodal disease, especially for symptomatic cases. A 14-year-old female adolescent visited a breast surgeon with a self-detected painless palpable mass in the left breast for 3 months, without systemic symptoms or significant family history. On examination, there was a firm 3.5-cm mass in the upper inner quadrant of the left breast. The mammogram revealed a focal distortion on axillary tail in the left breast, designated as BIRADS 4. US demonstrated two masses in the left breast, including a 3.4×2.6×1.5 cm hypoechoic, irregular mass at 11:00 and a 1×0.9×0.7 cm hypoechoic, irregular mass at 11:00, both near the infraclavicular region, accompanied by a 2.8×1 cm atypical lymph node in the left axillary region, designated BIRADS 4C. US-guided core biopsies of both masses were obtained, which showed a nonspecific chronic inflammatory process. A new core biopsy was performed but once more with nonspecific histopathological findings, as well as negative results from culture examinations. Following these indeterminate findings, the patient underwent excisional biopsy, which histopathologic conclusion finally elucidated the extranodal RDD diagnosis.

In 2014 the FORTE CULTURA network was born, known as “European Fortress Tourism and Fortress Marketing Network e.V.”, a non-governmental organization for the cultural, touristic, social and economic valorization of the cultural heritage of fortresses in the community. The 10 years since its establishment are an opportunity to reflect on the state of the art and the developments of the management models of these complex systems, as well as on the innovative trajectories linked to sustainable “new tourism” processes. The valorization highlights the need to involve local communities in raising awareness between memory and the creation of new identities and in developing branding processes. Starting from the rich scientific debate, the paper aims to reread from the point of view of the discipline of economic valorization the case of the fortified city of Kostrzyn in Poland (Central Europe 2007-2013): a paradigmatic case, as it is a nodal place of a system that is not only military, but also infrastructural and civic and administrative management of the territory, which, following the Second World War, became a central element in the division of borders between States and the object of a radical metamorphosis both in its physical aspects and in its intangible and immaterial ones. A disciplinary aspect is the development of shared and specific evaluation tools for each decision-making phase, focused on identifying the intangible elements and recognizing the impacts they can create on the territory. The enhancement proposals not only define the interventions from a technical point of view (formal and construction solutions), but they also put into action a planning necessary to experiment with measures, actions and strategies capable of inducing potential implementing bodies to intervene in a coordinated manner and to respond to unsatisfied needs in terms of forecasting and quantification of real and potential demands and profiling of the target audiences, who have drastically changed their cultural consumption preferences.

The dominance of protective dispersal then freeway building in 1950s and 1960s Melbourne planning reflects a view of its suburbs as an undifferentiated sprawl, with little internal agency, difference, nuance, cultural or visual texture. It is seen as primarily determined by demands of Melbourne’s CBD, and is assumed to spread in almost magic fashion: landscape one minute, ‘suburbia’ the next. For varied reasons this view is consolidated in planning imagery, responding to concerns at commuting and transport distance, disappearing food-producing land near the city, and concerns at raising population density. The result is urban form perceived constantly through liminality and outer boundary conditions: extensive borderlines. This suited urbanism that dealt with cities through quantification and circulation routes. This paper argues the dynamics of Melbourne’s suburban development come not from concentric spread but from the steady, sequential emergence of nodal suburbs, themselves major generators of commercial, industrial and transport activity. The original determinants for these suburban nodes were (i) the inability of Melbourne suburbs to remain in walk-to-work scales; (ii) the means to commute lowering urban density – initially through train and tram, and later cars commuting; (iii) these nodal suburbs’ breaking of the long arterial road system that shaped Melbourne’s early suburban form till the 1880s, largely by developing off or away from these arteries; (iv) the imagery of clustered institutional buildings with increased mass and expression beyond those of surrounding suburbs; (v) the specialisation of tributary suburbs as a residential hinterland, not for Melbourne the collected city, but for each of these localised nodes; and (vi) each suburban node gained a series of standard assets in making it an urban focus. These nodes form part of a series of intensive boundaries: more nuanced and individually distinctive. Intensive boundaries also encompass the miniature urban forms and specific urban models emulated in suburban nodes.

This research brief details findings from a recent collaborative project exploring different groups related to Atomwaffen Division (AWD) on Telegram. The brief provides an initial foray into understanding the digital communicative practices these AWD-related groups use to maintain their loose structure as a transnational, digitally networked extremist culture. Groups affiliated with the meta-brand of AWD are continuing to develop globally and building a transnational, digital networked culture, despite increased scrutiny. This indicates that their structure as a digitally networked, transnational culture provides resilience to traditional policy and law enforcement approaches. Addressing this threat requires insight into the practices that such groups use to interconnect their now multi-nodal, supranational organization.
