In this paper, we investigate the impact of non-farm employment (disaggregated by wage- and self-employment) on household income and poverty. Using a propensity score matching model, we evaluate the differences in outcomes between households who participate in the non-farm employment and those who do not. The results from the study show that non-farm wage-employed households in rural Nigeria have a significantly higher income than self-employed households. Second, we show that non-farm wage-employment impacts more on household welfare than non-farm self-employment. Third, we show that the bene

It has also brought new challenges to the governance of relative poverty in China. In Nepal, the two most reported uses of remittances received are: "for daily consumption" and "repayment of the loan". However, in general it is considered that international migration and remittances significantly reduce the level, depth, and severity of poverty in the developing world. We can conclude that the policy has led to an obvious increase in the total income of low-income families, as well as positive effects on those poor families who rely on agriculture and government subsidies. Yet the policy showed little impact on low-income families that rely on non-farm income. The program has also encouraged farm families to increase their various sources of capital stock. Descriptives are given to the motivations and constraints youth face when engaging in the RNFE or in migrant labour. The findings suggest that there are limited rural employment opportunities for youth, leading to a slow pace of rural poverty reduction. Rural youth still work mainly in poor quality jobs in agriculture, although they increasingly try: (i) to diversify their and their family’s income by engaging in nonfarm employment, or (ii) to lo

Although poverty in Zambia is more pronounced in rural than urban areas, the increase in poverty was much higher in urban areas. This increase may be at least partly explained by a confluence of factors, including load shedding, the Covid-19 pandemic, which considerably negatively affected businesses and employment, and the effect of rising prices, which also put pressure on households’ purchasing power.
