It has been suggested that in nonsense literature the form sometimes directs the events of the story (Tigges 1988, Lecercle 1994). Translation of a poem may make this even more evident, as with "Mr Pii Poo" (1956, originally “Herra Pii Poo”), a poem by the Finnish author Kirsi Kunnas, born in 1924. "Mr Pii Poo" tells a story about a magician in a conflict between rural and urban elements, a figure who is introduced also as a witch and who could at the same time be interpreted as an alter ego for the poet Kunnas. In this poem, Kirsi Kunnas binds a bizarre bundle of rhymed and free verses around

The present essay argues for reading Laura E. Richards’s nursery and Nonsense rhymes as her third autobiography. Unlike her formal autobiographies, which primarily served to maintain a mythic legacy of her renowned parents, Julia Ward and Samuel Gridley Howe, Richards’s nonsense poetry subtly subverts the constraints of this narrative. Food and eating are recurring themes throughout Laura Richards’s children’s poems. This essay examines how several of Richards’s poems bring together food and education, specifically in conjunction with excess, grotesquerie, and otherness. Reading foods as gesturing beyond themselves and as signifying on social relations, I argue that excessive food consumption and the ingestion of “wrong” foods are tied to a warning of greed and over-indulgence and to discouraging ambitions to transgress social boundaries in terms of race and class. Space as the locus of a game (“field”) has been a common metaphor in analysing Victorian nonsense literature: Elizabeth Sewell’s 1952 monograph incorporated it already in its title, The Field of Nonsense, while Susan Stewart’s study, Nonsense (1978), identifies discursive operations of nonsense-making “within a closed field.” However, little has been said about space as a motif (or topos) in the primary texts of nonsense. Although Gillian Beer in her 2016 book Alice in Space treats certain spatial aspects of Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, the spaces of Edward Lear’s limericks are yet to be explo
