A study of topics related to relationships and interactions between children and dolls was conducted through literature searches and interviews with target audiences. Based on the conclusions of the study a design concept was created, intended to criticize the idealization of passivity and beauty by which the market is characterized. One concept was selected and further developed using Critical Design methods.

Pełny tekst źródłaOne might say that it is of significant importance for social work practices that students, during education to become social workers, acquire knowledge of the aspects of power that occur during the meeting with clients. Anti-oppressive education as norm criticism and intersectionality addresses these aspects of power, thus points out the importance of good conditions for such education. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the teaching is conducted in practice and examine teachers’ experiences on how to teach about norm criticism and/or intersectionality in social work education. A qualitative study has been conducted with teachers who have experience in teaching about norm criticism and/or intersectionality. Nine semi-structured interviews have been conducted with teachers from different institutions. The study material has been analyzed on the basis of norm critical pedagogy and anti-oppressive education. The study highlights the importance that students develop critical thinking, which is imperative in order to question known “truths” and to continuously apply the process of critical thinking. For a deeper understanding, the students must understand the of power, norms and structures as well as how they affect and are influenced by them. This is achieved by the students turning the critical look toward themselves. There are organizational barriers to the teaching about norm criticism and/or intersectionality due to the lack of resources. For example, the student groups are too large and there is time constraint in designing the teaching in a constructive way. The conclusions are that teachers believe that knowledge about norm criticism and/or intersectionality is of outmost importance to achieve social change on a structural level. In order for students to gain such knowledge, the resources required must be made available to teachers. Therefore, to ensure that new models of teaching about norm criticism is practically implemented in social work education, the shortage of resources exposed in this study need to be considered when developing new teaching methods and during further research.

Pełny tekst źródłaCommunications have a variety of stereotypes that create prejudices and norms. Which, in turn, amplified and re-used in a habitual patterns when communication is created. It creates a vulnerability and marginalization of the people is the norm deviant. The stereotypes and norms that reproduced again and again in public space affects the mindset of who should get seen and which not to have seen. To find out how these stereotypes can be changed and to get more people included in the communication, the study developed using the concept as a norm creativity, critical analyzes norm and stereotypes. The study has a qualitative perspective, where three qualitative structured interviews conducted with people working with norm creativity and norms critical analyzes. The characters come from both the communications industry and the education system. The three respondent states that it is important to work with a norm creative and inclusive communication. It would change the negative stereotypes that are in communication. They also see a resistance in the industry to move away from the familiar. They all believe that there is a fear of losing money on a norm creative communication. This is not right. When companies work with norm creative communication it will appear new, perhaps unexpected, audiences for agencies to reach out to. Which will then lead to more groups may be apparent in communication. This in itself leads to a more inclusive communication. Which leads to stereotypes and norms are changing for the better.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study deals with how the Swedish school system handles questions concerning sexuality and normality. It is also an analysis of how the guidance material Någonstans går gränsen from RFSL Stockholm is used and could be used in teaching.
The study consists of two parts. The first part is a study of literature that portrays how teaching concerning these issues is performed in schools, what methods that are recommended and what methods are actually used in teaching. The second part consists of interviews with people dealing with these issues in school and in organizations.
My results show that schools often use a “pedagogy of tolerance” while the guidance material and the research and theories concerning sexuality and normality advocate a more “queer pedagogy”. The perspectives of queer theory are making their way into the school system by the help of organizations such as the Swedish RFSL and their “school information” (Skolinformation).
The study also shows that Någonstans går gränsen is not often used among teachers and therefore I discuss how it could be used and why the school system and teaching might have problems in using materials that use pedagogical methods of criticizing normality.

Many of these norms focuses on how you as a man or woman should behave in relation to your gender. Gender norms are reflected in design and what we design in products, furniture and buildings. With a gender specified norm critical approach, we examine how gender norms are reflected in design and how we as designers can design with norm criticism. With pattern design as an exploratory approach, we want to highlight and examine how gender norms affect and is repeated in what we design, just like a pattern is defined by lines and shapes that are repeated or experienced to be repeated. During our investigation it appears that patterns can contribute with discussion and stance that will work in multiple forums. We examine how unisex and male and female can be embodied in patterns, and how norm criticism works as an approach in a design process.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this essay I examine how the norm-critical material ”BRYT! ett metodmaterial om normer i allmänhet och heteronormen i synnerhet” is used by Hyresgästföreningen in Stockholm in their education of personnel in the perspective of equalisation. I’ve mostly been interested in how the personnel who takes part in workshops about the material react and reflect in relation to the purpose of the material. How do they discuss about norms and the connection to discrimination and how do they look upon the power and responsibility that comes with power in relation to norms? Earlier research in norm critical pedagogy and the critic of tolerans pedagogy perspective helps me to analyse how critical pedagogy stands above non-critical pedagogy in many perspectives.
By observing workshops and by interviewing personnels taking part in these workshops I’ve examined how they react on both the practical and theoretical parts of the material.
To summarise my examination I find the personnel who is educated in working with the material discover new experiences in knowledge and on how norms and discrimination functions. They explain that they have experienced knowledge about the connection between norms and discrimination and thereby how oppression could be counteracted and prevented.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of the study is to create a deeper understanding of preschool teachers view on norm creativity as a way of working in their organization. In order to address the study´s aims we used qualitative interviews implemented with selected preschool teachers. The results of our study have shown an association between norms and offensive treatment. The preschool teachers have described that norms can create exclusion and that the organization have to be evaluated and developed into an environment where the children are respected and strengthened in their differences. The preschool teachers have also described their view on norms, norm criticism and norm creativity mean to them, how they work with it and what responsibility they believe they have in work with norm creativity. During the qualitative interviews we met teachers who have worked with norm creativity and teacher who is unable to describe the term, but we can see in the collected data that they partly work with norm creativity after all.

Pełny tekst źródłaDen här studien syftar till att ge inblick i hur manliga ideal presenteras i ungdomslitteraturen och hur dessa är normbrytande. Boken som analyseras är Aidan Chambers bok Tullbron (1992) som behandlar identitetsutveckling, ideal och sexualitet. Denna analys är enbart ett nedslag bland all den litteratur som existerar för dagens ungdomar och unga vuxna, men den kan ge ett bidrag för att öka förståelsen för vikten av att olika manliga ideal finns presenterade i litteraturen. Analysen visar att Chambers verk behandlar normkritiska perspektiv genom att manligheten närmar sig de mer klassiska kvinnliga idealen där huvudkaraktären Jan är funderande, känslosam och osäker på sig själv. Dock visar analysen även att de kvinnliga karaktärerna emellanåt kan verka stereotyp i vissa delar av berättelsen, men samtidigt finns det en stor bredd på karaktärernas individnivå och samtliga karaktärer är väldigt olika varandra. Därav hamnar den kritik mot de kvinnliga karaktärerna snarare på individ än könsnivå i och med att ingen direkt tydlig distansering finns mellan de olika könen och en mängd diversiteter speglas i detta verk.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis, the formation and reproduction of norms in connection with pictures from teaching materials used by teachers in native languages in Eskilstuna Municipality, are researched. The thesis is based on the complex of problems that stereotypes and reproduction of norms are common in the teaching materials and the teachers lack time and possibilities to review the materials with a perspective of norm criticism. The thesis objective is to design a draft of a material from which the teachers can be supported when they are reviewing their teaching materials. The choice of theories and methods and design choices are based on questions about which norms are most common in the teaching materials, which of those should be considered in this thesis and how the materials characters should be illustrated based on rhetoric and cognition theories and a perspective of norm criticism. The results of literature studies, interviews and analyzes of teaching materials is presented and discussed. A design draft has been produced based on these results. Wrapping up the thesis is criticism of methods, a discussion which contains the answering of the question formulations and criticism of the design and lastly a con clusion is delivered.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this work is to investigate a norm-critical approach to learning as well as teachers’ views when it comes to norms and values. This work also investigates teachers’ views on possibilities and challenges with norm-critical perspectives, as well as how they implement the perspectives in planning and teaching. Explicit methods and strategies teachers use are investigated and demonstrated in the study. The methods used are surveys and semi-structured interviews based on a phenomenographic methodology. The analysis is based on theories about a socio-cultural perspective and a norm critical perspective, as well as the curriculum and the education act. The result shows that a norm-critical approach in education often is based on the teacher’s own values and sense of moral, as well as connected to the curriculum mission and its writings about norms. Teachers are seeing large possibilities when it comes to working with a norm-critical approach in most of the compulsory schools' subjects, and mostly in the different civics’ subjects. They value a general and long-term work and discussions about values and norm-critical thinking with pupils, to build on their experiences as well as connecting to the pupils’ everyday life and to use examples as they can identify with. The results agree well with prior research and literature.

Pełny tekst źródłaPurpose and Issues The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of dance, of/from eight high school students, from a standard critical perspective. What characterizes the boys' and girls' experiences and perceptions of dance at school? Does the teaching of dance in school raise awareness and discourage the stereotypical notions of what is considered masculine and feminine according to students' perception? Method The study is based on a qualitative interview survey of eight students coming from different parts of Sweden: Stockholm County, Östergötland County & Skåne County. One of all the schools was a private school and the remaining six schools were municipally run. Four boys and four girls who had read “Idrott och hälsa 1” participated in the study. The students were randomly selected. The selection of the schools was made from a convenience sample, since the selection of the school had to do with availability and contacts. Result The general attitude towards physical education in school was positive, all students except one pointed out several positive factors, for example that it is a nice break from the theoretical subjects and it is fun. Even though they have the same syllabus the experience of dance differed between the students. The students’ views of the value of the dance were divided. Many of the boys had similar ideas, just like the girls who were interviewed had. The girls felt to a greater extent than the boys that dance was meaningful. Most of the girls perceived themselves as active by helping others in the class. The girls felt that there were boundaries between the sexes while most boys perceived themselves as active in that they participated and did whatever the teacher showed them to do and they did not think there were any boundaries between the sexes. Both boys and girls agreed that it was accepted to dance with someone of the same sex. None of the students reported that they had discussed dance in relation to gender stereotypes in school. None of the students perceived that the school had been working with dance as a means to counter stereotypical views about gender differences through dance. Conclusion The study shows that the dance education in school does not contribute in raising the students’ awareness about gender stereotypes. However, the students were positive to work with the raising of consciousness about stereotypes because they felt that it would arise differences between the sexes otherwise. The study also shows that all students do not feel that the school counteracts stereotypical notions of masculinity and femininity. Another aspect that is important to highlight is that the study, based on students' experiences and perceptions, shows that the teacher's role is important because it is the teacher who has the responsibility to encourage discussion about ideas of stereotypes and norms that exist. This is done to raise awareness about and to discourage stereotypes of what is masculine and feminine.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe overall aim of this study is to analyse primary school teachers’ testimonies regarding sexuality education in religious education through a norm critical perspective. To fulfil this aim, the study seeks to find out how the teachers carries out their sexuality education when teaching religious education, and furthermore, what part the participating teachers give sexuality education, as to how big a part of the subject it represents and the teachers’ understanding of the purpose of the field. The study is based on individual interviews with four teachers who work in years 4-6 in primary school and teach religious education. What becomes apparent is the awareness the participating teachers show regarding the possibility of their sexuality education being heteronormative. There is also an outspoken ambition among the teachers to make their sexuality education less normative, however, they all lack specific education in the subject matter. This might be one of the reasons why sexuality education is given a very small part in each of the interviewees’ religious education teaching.
