L’orthodoxie dans la littérature florissante au sujet de la fondation (grounding) suggère que cette notion ne peut être analysée ou exprimée en terme d’aucune autre. Par ailleurs, le primitivisme à propos de l’essence est considéré comme très plausible depuis l’article influent de Kit Fine à ce sujet1. Cela contraint les philosophes qui emploient ces deux notions à accepter une position doublement primitiviste. Mon objectif principal est de proposer une définition de la fondation en terme d’essence. Je commencerai par présenter la conception positive en question, puis je montrerai la façon dont elle répond à un certain nombre d’objections à son encontre. L’apport d’une telle approche, si elle est couronnée de succès, devrait être évident : les philosophes qui acceptent la fondation comme notion primitive n’auront plus à le faire, pour autant qu’ils emploient déjà la notion d’essence. Pour ceux qui refusaient de parler de fondation sous prétexte que la notion était indéfinissable, la présence d’une définition éliminera ipso facto leur raison d’être sceptique.

Ce numéro thématique trouve son origine dans le succès paradoxal de l’expression de « panique morale » qui sature l’espace médiatique, mais dont les usages élastiques permettent les appropriations les plus diverses. Comme pour d’autres notions à la croisée du champ scientifique et du champ politico-médiatique (populisme, complotisme…), le flou qui entoure ces usages et les multiples récupérations dont cette notion fait l’objet interrogent en effet sur sa nature, son intérêt heuristique, et les conditions de son utilisation scientifique. Ce numéro propose donc d’opérer un retour réflexif sur la question des paniques morales.

Le concept d’immersion théâtrale rencontre aujourd’hui un succès grandissant, tant auprès des artistes que des chercheurs. Combiner les notions d’immersion et d’interactivité semble aller de soi lorsque l’on évoque le théâtre immersif, pour certains artistes, théoriciens ou journalistes, pour qui le spectateur est invité à habiter l’espace du spectacle. Est-il pourtant si naturel de combiner ces deux notions ? Comment combiner le développement d’une histoire, fut-elle non linéaire, et une organisation interactive ? Dans cet article, Catherine Bouko propose de traiter les rapports entre théâtre immersif et interactivité en trois points. Dans un premier temps, elle définit la notion d’interactivité, afin d’insister sur ce qu’elle est… et sur ce qu’elle n’est pas. Ensuite, elle présente rapidement une définition du théâtre immersif. Dans un troisième temps, elle aborde trois techniques dramaturgiques visant essentiellement une personnalisation des spectacles immersifs, sans pour autant toujours atteindre l’interactivité et une véritable intégration dans une image habitable.

Le succès d'études récentes fondées sur une conception interactionniste des échanges langagiers a conduit à remettre en avant la notion de contexte de situation, un concept élaboré dans les années 50 par Firth et Malinowski. Le but de cet article est de montrer que la théorie contextuelle du sens de J.R. Firth permet de concilier la prise en compte exhaustive des données linguistiques aussi bien que des facteurs pertinents du contexte de situation, pour aboutir à la construction dynamique du sens. La conception du contexte comme série d'emboîtements depuis le niveau phonétique jusqu'au niveau du contexte de la culture conduit à valoriser le niveau collocationnel et ouvre des perspectives intéressantes pour une utilisation de la notion de collocation dans le domaine de la morphologie.

La notion de différenciation proposée par l’économie industrielle rejoint un premier sens de la notion de spécificité : le produit est dit différencié s’il a des caractéristiques particulières (mesurables, au sens de substantielles ou d’intrinsèques) et s’il est perçu comme tel par les usagers. Le festival italien Notte della Taranta est un exemple très intéressant qui permet de comprendre le rôle et l’incidence des politiques culturelles locales et régionales mises en oeuvre afin d’attirer l’attention médiatique et touristique sur le territoire salentin. Pour ce faire, les opérateurs culturels, qui organisent le festival, ont recours à la force attractive d’une certaine image de l’identité musicale locale. C’est pourquoi nous avons réinterrogé la notion d’identité locale afin d’analyser comment cette notion devient opérationnelle dans le cadre du festival en contribuant à sa réussite et à son succès. Nous avons ainsi circonscrit les divers acteurs qui participent à cet événement, puis défini leur rôle et leurs stratégies respectives afin de dégager des outils d’analyse, voire peut-être un modèle de fonctionnement qu’il serait intéressant de mettre à l’épreuve d’autres contextes festivaliers similaires.

La théorie littéraire et les statistiques peuvent sembler bien éloignées l’une de l’autre, et pourtant, leur association permets de proposer un point de vue singulier dans le domaine des Lettres. Cette recherche a été pensée à partir des possibilités offertes par une telle approche, susceptible de trouver une réponse à une curiosité littéraire de l’extrême contemporanéité constatée en territoire français. L’objet d’étude en question est celui de la littérature de l’imaginaire pour jeunes-adultes, qui, en France, témoigne de degrés de succès tranchés selon l’origine de ses titres publiés : avec d’un côté, des œuvres anglo-américaines traduites à la popularité exponentielle ; et de l’autre, des œuvres françaises dont les représentants les plus populaires le sont pourtant bien en deçà de leurs contemporains. Et si certains facteurs externes influents peuvent, en toute logique, être déterminés, qu’en est-il de ceux qui, possiblement, se jouent à l’intérieur même du texte ? Le cœur de la recherche consistera à interroger, détecter, voire prédire, ces éventuelles raisons textuelles à l’angle de la statistique, sans pour autant faire l’impasse sur celles de l’extérieure qui seront aussi examinées afin de mesurer au mieux le poids des influences en action. Soit, pour reprendre la double modalité du titre de cette recherche, un objectif traduisible sous la forme de la problématisation suivante : « Les succès de la littérature de l’imaginaire pour jeunes-adultes en France peuvent-ils, dans une certaine mesure, être expliqués et prédits à partir de la matière textuelle ? ». Cette démarche à la croisée des sciences exactes et de la théorie littéraire, rendue possible par une approche analytique axée sur les typologies et modélisations conceptualisées grâce à une combinaison d’approches en structuralisme, narratologie et textométrie, a pour objectif une mesure et une vérification des caractéristiques de succès externes au texte au prisme de la statistique ; mais surtout, se propose d’examiner des phénomènes textuels sous une forme quantifiable, pour détecter ceux qui se jouent à l’intérieur même de la fiction et les mettre en miroir selon le succès commercial que les œuvres ont connu
Literary theory and statistics may seem far removed from one another, but their combination makes it possible to propose a singular point of view in the field of literature. This research has been conceived in the light of the possibilities offered by such an approach, which is likely to provide a response to a literary curiosity about the extreme contemporaneity observed in France. The object of study is the young adult imaginary literature, which, in France, shows clear-cut degrees of success depending on the origin of its published titles: on the one hand, translated Anglo-American books with exponential popularity; on the other, French books whose most popular representatives are nonetheless far less popular than their contemporaries. And if certain external influencing factors can logically be determined, what about those that may be in action within the text itself? The heart of this research will be to interrogate, detect and even predict these possible textual reasons from a statistical angle, without however ignoring external ones, which will also be examined in order to best measure the weight of the influences at book. In other words, to use the double modality of the title of this research, an objective that can be translated in the form of the following problematization: “Can the successes of young adult imaginary literature in France be, to some extent, explained and predicted on the basis of textual material?”.This approach, at the crossroads of the exact sciences and literary theory, made possible by an analytical approach based on typologies and models conceptualized through a combination of approaches in structuralism, narratology and textometry, aims to measure and verify the characteristics of success external to the text through the prism of statistics; but above all, proposes to examine textual phenomena in a quantifiable form, and detect those at by in action within the fiction itself and to mirror them according to the commercial success that the books have enjoyed

Virtual Teams are becoming an increasingly common work form. The ability to connect people with required sets of skills, regardless of their location in the world has been enabled by advances in information technology over the past 20 years. However, as researchers and practitioners have discovered, this new kind of team brings with it number of challenges. This thesis aims to examine the challenges and the opportunities that technology brings to the environment of the Virtual Team and to give hands on advice to researchers and practitioners in the field. The authors have taken an interdisciplinary view on Virtual Teams and Collaborative Virtual Environments. The focus has been on the design of the virtual space as well as early team building activities that support team formation. An extensive literature review examines concepts such as the development of trust, team opacity and shared mental models in respect to the virtual team. In respect to technology, the authors have also looked into research on the transformation of virtual spaces into places, where meaningful activities can been carried out.

The authors recommend anyone considering to assemble a Virtual Team to look at the greater context of the team in respect to the people that will make up the team, the previous history of the team members, the timeline and lifespan of the team and a number of other variables. These recommendations are presented in the form of a framework for understanding the context of the Virtual Team, including its supporting technologies. In certain cases, the team may benefit from engaging in virtual team building activities. For these purposes, the authors have investigated technologies which support interaction in a 3D virtual space where the team member is represented by a virtual persona, an avatar.

The thesis presents an experimental platform, called Teamlink, for conducting virtual ice breaking and team building in a 3D environment, developed in increments at Auckland University of Technology over the past 8 years. Based on the theoretical findings from the review and on an evaluation of previous research conducted on Teamlink the authors give recommendations on future work on Teamlink as well as its suitability as a platform for virtual ice breaking.

This thesis explores the discourses of success within the Anglophone transatlantic television industry through the semi-structured interviews of sixteen industry practitioners. The TV industry has long been studied in media studies, its working conditions discussed in production studies, its texts scrutinised in TV studies; but what drives the TV industry? What is ‘success’ to television industry practitioners? How do they apprehend it and discuss it? Looking at this key element through those at the heart of it is this research’s purpose, and a necessary step for cultural, production and television studies to better comprehend the industry and what drives it and its members. After discussing the methods selected for this research and bringing forth a new, sevenfold taskbased industry categorisation, my research will tackle its subject of enquiry through three main topics: •the perception of decision-makers by industry practitioners •the industrial executive discourses of success among the different industry constituents (networks/cable/premium/public channels/studios); •the personal definitions of success of all practitioners (and their link to industrial/professional success). This research will engage with many academic fields: from discourse analysis and industrial sociology to organisational research and management psychology, through production studies, cultural studies and film/television/media studies, giving it a clearly multidisciplinary scope. With this thesis, I also wish to further help bridge the gap between academic and industrial expertise. By doing so, and making sense of industrial and personal ideas of success, my research aims at developing a new framework for it, thereby proposing to academics a first approach to the notion of success in this industry.

This study explores the notions of 'success' and 'failure' held by senior executives in the UK and Irish airline industry. Previous studies of this industry have tended to be from a positivist perspective, focusing on financial performance at the level of 'airline' or 'airline industry'. This study takes the airline executive as the unit of analysis and is conducted from a phenomenological perspective. A methodology using interviews, causal mapping and postal questionnaires is applied to surface the notions of 'success' and 'failure' and the perception of the causes of 'success' held by board-level airline executives. Standardised data published by the Civil Aviation Authority Economic Research Group is used to establish a range of objective measures, both financial and operational, and these objective measures are compared with the rankings of the senior executives' perceptions of the success of UK and Irish airlines. The research establishes that senior airline executives do not see 'success' in terms of financial objective measures such as Added Value or Operating Ratio; they use profit as the primary financial measure of 'success' and frequently hold notions of 'success' that are based in other functional areas such as operations and marketing. The causes of 'success' are seen as coming from the breadth of functional areas. The influence of HRM factors becomes clearer at deeper levels of abstraction when considering 'success'. There is limited evidence of the stereotyping of perceptions when the success of specific airlines is considered, but not for airlines' success in general. Recommendations for further research into the management of human resources within airlines are made.

This qualitative study explores the evolving notion of economic success among middle class Salvadorans. While initially aimed at the effects of dollarization, the scope was widened to be more inclusive of overall neoliberal practices in El Salvador. In-depth interviews and ethnographic observations were used to understand life as a middle class Salvadoran and the relationship between government practices, including dollarization, and the evolving definition of economic success. Focusing on the individuals in the advertising industry, this study examines the complex factors that influence and determine middle class sentiments regarding their economic status and their point of view on dollarization’s effects on their lives. Additionally, this study considers how opinions and experiences differ along socioeconomic lines, comparing middle class employee experiences with that of upper class CEOs. The study was conducted in San Salvador, El Salvador; the economic and cultural center of El Salvador.

The monograph is devoted to the foreign policy of Ancient Rome during the period of the kings and the early Republic. The paper draws attention to the fact that at these stages of its development, Rome did not create a state in the modern sense, but rather a Federation, and with a developed self-government of its participants. Thanks to a system of mutually beneficial treaties, Rome became a political center among the peoples of Ancient Italy. At the same time, remnants of tribal relations were preserved in Ancient Rome for a long time. Attention is also paid to the development of military Affairs in Rome. It is noted that in Ancient Rome for a long time there were no defensive walls, which predisposed the Romans to an offensive type of warfare. The Romans created battle tactics that would be consistent with the characteristics of the soldiers ' weapons and would allow for rapid military training among recruits, which provided the Romans with high mobilization capabilities. However, classically represent the soldier in the Lorica of segmentata in the tsarist period was not. An important role in the development of Rome as the center of international politics of Ancient Italy, the center of the Federation was played by the high moral standards postulated by the ancient Roman society and invested in the concept of the Republic. All these diplomatic, ethical, and military features of Ancient Rome combined to determine the success of Roman civilization. However, it is worth noting that the disorganization of these principles caused the fall of Rome. For anyone interested in the historical processes of Ancient Italy and Ancient Rome.

This article examines potential applications of the concept of cause to some central ethical concepts, views, and problems. In particular, it discusses the role of causation in the family of views known as consequentialism, the distinction between killing and letting die, the doctrine of double effect, and the concept of moral responsibility. The article aims to examine the extent to which an appeal to the concept of cause contributes to elucidating moral notions or to increasing the plausibility of moral views. Something that makes this task interestingly complex is the fact that the notion of causation itself is controversial and difficult to pin down. As a result, in some cases the success of its use in moral theory hinges on how certain debates about causation are resolved.

The Yishi yuyan, a Chinese translation of Aesop’s fables based largely on the collection by Roger L’Estrange (1616–1704), was published circa 1840 by Robert Thom (1807–1846), with his Chinese tutor as co-translator. This chapter examines the sinicization of the Yishi yuan by investigating how the translators recontextualized a culturally appropriate context for the integration of various Chinese literary sources in their narration and reflection of the fables. Following a discussion of the rendering of L’Estrange’s Aesop into Chinese, the key elements that facilitated the success of sinicization of the Yishi yuyan are analysed to illustrate the sinicization techniques and strategies employed by the translators in adapting L’Estrange’s Aesopic fables to a Chinese narrative.

AbstractEconomic performance has long been routinely measured by GDP. Although it is a good measure of activity, it is generally agreed to be a poor measure of economic success. The reasons are that it omits domestic labour and other unpaid work, it includes a great deal of economic activity that does not contribute directly to economic welfare (“defensive expenditures”) and may be harmful to individuals, society or the environment, and it is insensitive to inequality. There are also several other, more technical, problems. More fundamentally, purchases that merely improve one person’s economic standing compared to others make no contribution to aggregate wellbeing yet are counted in GDP. And macro-evidence shows that in rich societies, increasing prosperity is subject to diminishing returns—as GDP per person rises ever higher, the amount of additional benefit greatly decreases, possibly even to zero.There have been various responses to this situation. One is to start from GDP, and attempt to remedy its defects by adding some items (e.g. domestic labour) and subtracting others (e.g. the cost of deterioration of nature). Various methods have been devised to adjust for inequality. And there have been many attempts to broaden the range of included items to form composite indices—the basic motivation being that economic success is only one criterion of societal benefit (this is not the same thing as providing a measure of economic success). Some useful ideas have emerged from this work, but there are no clear criteria for deciding which items should be included. Furthermore, the underlying notion is that monitoring something desirable will in itself lead to improvement—whereas in reality, effective policy needs to be based on the determinants of desirable outcomes that can be altered. And it is difficult to envisage such composite indices displacing GDP in the development of major policies. However, a different approach to “beyond GDP”, the OECD/EU initiative for an “economy of wellbeing”, has much in common with the emphasis on basic needs proposed in this book.A great deal of progress has been made in assessing household disposable income, in valuing public services that are free at the point of delivery and in evaluating “free” goods and new products. The valuation of the various types of assets has also advanced considerably, including the UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting and the Inclusive Wealth Index. Particular attention is needed in relation to critical resources that are non-substitutable, including drinkable water, fertile soil, and pollinators including bees.Subjective wellbeing has been the focus of much development activity. It is now widely monitored, and substantial research is being undertaken on its determinants. However, many methodological and conceptual problems remain, and its causal dependence on economic factors may be too weak to justify its sole use in evaluating the success of an economy. Health status needs to be considered alongside happiness as a primary criterion. Its social determinants are extremely well established, and account for a greater proportion of health outcomes than either healthcare or lifestyle choices. To a large extent, these determinants correspond to the satisfaction of basic needs as emphasised in this book, and health is responsive to interventions across the corresponding range of policy areas. The success of an economy in promoting a good quality of life for everyone can therefore be evaluated by monitoring of the satisfaction of basic needs, as determinants of health and happiness.

AbstractWe study semi-algorithms to synthesise the constraints under which a Parametric Timed Automaton satisfies some liveness requirement. The algorithms traverse a possibly infinite parametric zone graph, searching for accepting cycles. We provide new search and pruning algorithms, leading to successful termination for many examples. We demonstrate the success and efficiency of these algorithms on a benchmark. We also illustrate parameter synthesis for the classical Bounded Retransmission Protocol. Finally, we introduce a new notion of completeness in the limit, to investigate if an algorithm enumerates all solutions.

La différence ? Elle tient principalement au cadre organisationnel. Dans un cas, la question est circonscrite, les acteurs impliqués et l’horizon temporel délimités. Des orientations et des limites sont fixées à l’intérieur desquelles un dirigeant peut effectivement conduire une réflexion pour que des réponses et des solutions soient apportées à la question posée. Dans l’autre, des injonctions multiples viennent modifier les données du problème, des changements brusques surviennent sous l’impulsion d’un donneur d’ordre lointain. Sous pression, le responsable porte moins son regard vers ceux dont les analyses peuvent mener à une solution que vers les commanditaires et leurs volontés. According to the EU, Circular economy represents a development strategy that entails economic growth without increasing consumption of resources, deeply transform production chains and consumption habits and redesign industrial systems at the system level. The decisive economic branch in ensuring circularity is industry. Thus, the engineer becomes the key to success, but for this he must be trained in order to support the sustainability of production. Through the curricula of the Department of Engineering and Management of Technological Systems (IMST), students are trained in fields such as engineering and management, environmental engineering and marine engineering and navigation. The sustainable integration of future engineers in industrial activity is an older concern that, in the current context, must be supplemented with notions and applications regarding the circular economy. The paper presents the authors' proposals for the completion of some syllabuses that develop specific competences and abilities for the circular economy.

Abstract With the most recent Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM)(1) that addresses pipeline integrity and indirect inspections, there is language that relates to Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) and Alternating Current Voltage Gradient (ACVG) surveys including certain criteria associated with what must be addressed after completing DCVG or ACVG surveys. While generally both DCVG and ACVG are categorized as having the ability to pinpoint indications of coating defects, there can be a major difference in the success of the chosen technique depending on the pipeline conditions. This paper will point out when and why to use either technique including what the criteria of percent IR and Decibel microvolt (dBμV) really mean when conducting these survey techniques.

Étant donné que les processus d'entreprise sont extrêmement complexes en raison de la variété des ressources utilisées, des contraintes imposées par l'environnement externe, des difficultés à définir les caractéristiques de la qualité et à les évaluer par des mesures, une approche systématique du concept de qualité est nécessaire, en tenant compte du fait que le produit est le résultat d'un effort commun. La question de la qualité devient de plus en plus pertinente pour les biens et les services dans l'environnement hautement compétitif caractéristique d'une économie de marché. Des programmes sont mis en oeuvre dans les pays développés pour améliorer la qualité et la compétitivité des produits. Une attention particulière est accordée au développement d'indicateurs qui déterminent la capacité des entreprises à fonctionner avec qualité et à produire des produits de haut niveau. Les entreprises qui opèrent avec succès sur le marché disposent de systèmes de qualité certifiés. With the proliferation of learning scenarios with an abundance of instances, but limited amount of high-quality labels, semi-supervised learning algorithms came to prominence. Graph-based semi-supervised learning (G-SSL) algorithms, of which Label Propagation (LP) is a prominent example, are particularly well-suited for these problems. The premise of LP is the existence of homophily in the graph, but beyond that nothing is known about the efficacy of LP. In particular, there is no characterisation that connects the structural constraints, volume and quality of the labels to the accuracy of LP. In this work, we draw upon the notion of recovery from the literature on community detection, and provide guarantees on accuracy for partially-labelled graphs generated from the Partially-Labelled Stochastic Block Model (PLSBM). Extensive experiments performed on synthetic data verify the theoretical findings.

Despite the success of CDCL SAT solvers solving industrial problems, there are still many open questions to explain such success. In this context, the generation of random SAT instances having computational properties more similar to real-world problems becomes crucial. Such generators are possibly the best tool to analyze families of instances and solvers behaviors on them. In this paper, we present a random SAT instances generator based on the notion of locality. We show that this is a decisive dimension of attractiveness among the variables of a formula, and how CDCL SAT solvers take advantage of it. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first random SAT model that generates both scale-free structure and community structure at once.

Design is seen as the magic word and being a design engineer is considered to be the key to success in the job market by many of the mechanical engineering students. However, it is always assumed that the mechanical systems not the thermal engineers are indeed design engineers by education and practice. This notion probably stems from the fact that most of the thermal fluid courses in mechanical engineering curriculum seem to have been defined and developed to prepare undergraduate students for going to graduate school rather than the job market. The undergraduate courses usually emphasize on the theories with less attention to the design and application aspects. Perhaps, the responsibility of thermal engineering educators is to correct this notion by emphasizing more on the application and design in the existing courses or alternatively to develop and offer new courses on more applied topics. In this paper, we will report an integrated approach in teaching topics in fins and fin assemblies, which includes class lectures, laboratory experiments, ANSYS simulations and design competition. In this manuscript, we will report on the details of this approach including the procedures, methods, our observations, and the students’ feedbacks.

User experience of digital platforms and technologies tends to be quite ‘thin’, characterized by low-quality engagements such as addictive tendencies or browsing on autopilot. This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach to identifying more cognitive and active dimensions of ‘thick’ user experience, introducing a new design and UX framework which is centered around the notion of joy. In this paper, we explain how we are piloting this framework and working at developing measurements that operationalize the different dimensions of joy, through a series of case studies of different digital platforms and applications.The first part of this paper develops a conceptual framework for building for joy. We consider existing UX frameworks which focus on dimensions such as delight, happiness, satisfaction, pleasure, adoption, and retention. We explain how many harmful kinds of engagement either do not impact negatively on these kinds of assessments, or even result in higher scores. We then draw on recent work in positive psychology, which has seen a move from happiness and ‘thin’ conceptions of pleasure to ‘thicker’ notions such as joy. Although there is no one definition of joy, the kind of experience we are interested in involves an intense feeling of fulfilment and a deep alignment between some good in the world and oneself (Johnson, 2020a, 2020b). This kind of joy encompasses a range of motivations and intensities, and incorporates a cognitive profile which includes recognition of integrity and dependence on external factors, as well as normative assessments.The second part of this paper provides an overview of our case studies, which explore how design elements of digital platforms interact with the motivational, cognitive, and normative dimensions of joy identified within our conceptual framework. For these studies, we used a range of methodologies, including surveys which aimed to collect both quantitative and qualitative data, structured interviews, and autoenthnography. We suggest that platforms and applications which do well within our joy-focused framework promote a deeper and healthier level of engagement with digital technologies. We end by opening up some new research directions, including how building for joy might correlate with increases in adoption, retention, task success, and financial profitability.

The COMPASS project has examined the ways kaiako, ākonga, and whānau navigate educational experiences and contexts. Using quantitative and qualitative data, the report focuses on examining the social-psychological conditions for school success from the perspectives of Māori and Pasifika students (n = 5,843), Pasifika whānau members (n = 362), and Māori kaiako (n = 311) from 102 schools across Aotearoa New Zealand.

En effet, à ce jour, 79,4 % de la population totale des pays du G7 a reçu une première dose, 72,9 % une seconde, et 45,4 % une dose de rappel (données du 28 avril 2022) 1 En France, c’est 80,6 % de la population totale qui a reçu une première dose, 78,2 % qui a reçu deux doses, et 55,4 % qui a reçu un rappel (données du 28 avril 2022).2 Au Royaume-Uni, 79,3 % de la population totale a reçu une première dose, 74,1 % une seconde, et 58,5 % un rappel.1 Enfin, en Italie, 85,2 % de la population totale a reçu une première dose, 80,4 % a reçu deux doses et 66,5 % a reçu leurs rappels (données du 28 avril 2022). Ces taux de vaccination élevés masquent pourtant des disparités importantes à l’intérieur de chaque pays. Ainsi, à Marseille, deuxième ville de France, moins de 50 % des habitants des quartiers nord de la ville étaient vaccinés à la fin de l’année 2021, alors que plus de 70 % des habitants des quartiers sud l’étaient au même moment.3 Dans le quartier populaire de Ealing, situé au nord-ouest de Londres, 70 % de la population admissible avait reçu une première dose, soit près de 10 % de moins que la moyenne nationale. 4 (Données du 4 avril 2022). Des disparités similaires ont été observées dans d’autres métropoles urbaines des pays du G7. Ce document examine ces disparités au prisme de la notion d’« (in)égalité vaccinale ». En s’appuyant sur des recherches qualitatives menées pendant la campagne de vaccination de la COVID-19 dans les quartiers nord de Marseille, le quartier de Ealing à Londres (Nord-ouest) et dans la région de l'Émilie-Romagne et à Rome, en Italie, il montre comment les autorités locales peuvent agir pour atténuer ces inégalités. Mieux comprendre les inégalités en matière de vaccins fut primordial lors de la pandémie de la COVID-19 en ce sens que les populations sous-vaccinées étaient la plupart du temps des minorités ethniques ou culturelles, vivant dans des zones défavorisées, ou sans-papiers, donc plus susceptibles de contracter la COVID-19, et d’en subir les conséquences les plus dramatiques. 5 6 7 8 Ainsi, à Ealing, quatre mois après la campagne de vaccination, seulement 57,6% des personnes dans le décile de pauvreté le plus bas avaient reçu une dose, contre 81% des personnes dans le décile le plus aisé. 9 En outre, 89,2 % des résidents britanniques blancs de Ealing étaient vaccinés, contre 64 % des Pakistanais et 49,3 % des habitants issus des Caraïbes.9 À Rome, comme c’est le cas dans d’autres métropoles urbaines des pays du G7, nos données révèlent des disparités particulières importantes entre le recours aux vaccins des populations sans papiers et celui des citoyens établis. Les facteurs d’inégalité vaccinale dans ces environnements urbains sont complexes et liés à l’interaction de nombreux phénomènes tels que les inégalités économiques, le racisme structurel, l'inégalité d'accès aux soins de santé, la méfiance envers les professionnels de santé, les représentants de l'État, et plus encore. Les collectivités locales tout comme les professionnels de la santé, les groupes communautaires et les résidents jouent un rôle clé dans la manière dont s’exprime l’(in)égalité vaccinale. Pour autant, peu de leçons ont été systématiquement tirées des efforts menés en matière d’ «engagement vaccinal » au niveau local. Dans ce document, nous proposons d’expliquer comment l’expérience des inégalités structurelles se recoupe avec celle des habitants, et comment ces expériences ont été prises en compte ou au contraire ignorées dans la promotion et l’administration des vaccins contre la COVID-19 par les collectivités locales. Nous adressons également un ensemble de recommandations qui s’appliquent aux programmes de « vaccination de rattrapage » contre la COVID-19 (visant à atteindre les personnes qui n’ont pas encore reçu leur schéma vaccinal complet), mais elles concernent également les programmes de vaccination d'urgence à venir. Ce document repose sur des recherches menées entre octobre et décembre 2021 à Marseille et sur des échanges réguliers avec les autorités du Borough de Ealing initiés dès mai 2021. Il identifie comment les gouvernements locaux, les acteurs de la santé, les groupes communautaires et les résidents jouent un rôle clé dans la production d’(in)égalités vaccinales. We develop and test a relational contracting model where building relationships requires the principal and agent to solve task clarity and credibility problems. We model task clarity as the likelihood of the agent finding a productive action for the principal and demonstrate that it influences the agents propensity to fulfill promises the usual notion of credibility in relational contracts. This is because improving task clarity increases the ease of replacing a relationship after a defection, making defection more tempting. We validate our model using a decade of administrative data from the Ethiopian floriculture industry. Our estimation documents that: i) task clarity problems are economically relevant in the industry and larger for domestic firms, ii) consistent with a unique prediction of our model, domestic firms, due to their lower task clarity and despite a lower discount factor, are less likely to defect on relationships as a response to improvements in the outside option, and iii) the buyer and seller components of task clarity explain differences between foreign and domestic firms in credibility and overall success in relational contracts.

This study investigates Korea's success in the area of skills development and what role the Korean government played during the stages of Korean economic development since the 1960s. Major achievements connected with the Korean skills development system over the last few decades are described and evaluated. However, it is worth noting that the Korean system has confronted challenges, arising from rapid changes in the economic and social environment that have put the sustainability of its current skills development system into question. In this regard, this study also analyzes the direction the Korean skills development system is moving toward and makes policy recommendations concerning how current challenges may be better handled.In doing so, the notion of lifelong skills development is derived. This notion signals a shift away from a government-led, supply driven model towards a locally based, demand-driven model, in order to align the supply of education and training programs with the needs of local business, and the improved effectiveness of Korea's skills development system over the coming years. The Korean government has played a key role in establishing the skills development system over the last few decades. Government intervention in skills development has addressed both the public and private sector. In the public sector, government initiatives established vocational education and training institutions in response to rising demand for skills, and according to economic development strategy. In the private sector, government legislation established regulations and institutions that incentivized private employer investment in in-plant training by providing financial support (e.g., levy-exemption) until the late 1990s, with the levygrant system under the Employment Insurance Act effective since 1995. These measures helped employers to bear costs related to training prospective and existing employees. Additionally, national qualification systems helped job seekers to undertake vocational training, which was in high demand throughout the labor market. This paper briefly describes challenges and concerns connected with establishing a lifelong skills development system in Korea. The analysis will focus on how the existing government-led VET system may be transformed into a public-private partnership based model that provides better VET programs. Additionally, the VET system needs to foster lifelong employment or employability rather than lifelong jobs, which was previously the cornerstone of the Korean employment system. Regarding career development, policy intervention needs to disestablish the "monorail" career trajectory of school-work-retirement, in favor of diversified careers by establishing flexible and competency-based qualification systems. This paper also describes some examples of instances of application of the lifelong skills development system in Korea. In-depth case studies are carried out regarding the development and application of National Competency Standards, the local-industry tailored skills development system, and reform of secondary vocational education focused on specialized vocational and Meister Schools in Korea. However, the Korean central government must still perform a significant role in managing and monitoring skills development. It should continue to use policy to foster public-private partnership in skills development, as local municipalities and sectoral stakeholders are yet to develop their own capabilities in this area. In addition, National Competency Standards (NCS) and regional Human Resources Development (HRD) committees need to further develop their roles and functions in order to better meet the diversified demands of business and employees and adapt to rapid technological and organizational changes. This essay is a reflection on some aspects of dramaturgy observed during the creation and development of One by One, a silent tragicomedy designed by the Auckland company, LAB Theatre, in 2011 and restaged in 2013. The emphasis of the essay is on pedagogical aspects at the core of the company’s work, as they inform the creative process and lead to the blending of the actor’s function into that of the dramaturg. The following discussion makes apparent the fact that this process of hybridisation, made possible by implementing features of devised theatre, emancipates the actor and brings improvisation to a better use. The play was based on the notion that theatrical action must be ‘suggestive’ rather than ‘descriptive.’ This idea originated in the works of Konstantin Stanislavski (1988) and Jacques Copeau (2000) and was developed by more recent theorists of dramaturgy into a practical framework for theatrical performance in general. The success of One by One depended very much on the implementation of these principles. The achievement was duly noted by reviewer Lexie Matheson (2011), who appreciated that One by One “exists on its own, doesn’t need explanation, doesn’t explain itself; it just unravels with delicacy and tenderness, like a good yarn should.

Indonesia has done much to improve access to education in recent decades but it has had little success in improving learning outcomes. This paper examines the political origins of this problem. It argues that Indonesia’s learning crisis has reflected the political dominance during the New Order and post-New Order periods of predatory political, bureaucratic and corporate elites who have sought to use the country’s education system to accumulate resources, distribute patronage, mobilize political support, and exercise political control rather than produce skilled workers and critical and inquiring minds. Technocratic and progressive elements, who have supported a stronger focus on basic skills acquisition, have contested this orientation, with occasional success, but generally contestation has been settled in favour of predatory elites. The analysis accordingly suggests that efforts to improve learning outcomes in Indonesia are unlikely to produce significant results unless there is a fundamental reconfiguration of power relations between these elements. In the absence of such a shift, moves to increase funding levels, address human resource deficits, eliminate perverse incentive structures, and improve education management in accordance with technocratic templates of international best practice or progressive notions of equity and social justice—the sorts of measures that have been the focus of education reform efforts in Indonesia so far—are unlikely to produce the intended results.

The article discusses the prospects of the augmented reality using as a component of a cloud-based environment. The research goals are the next: to explore the possibility of the augmented reality using with the involvement of the cloud-based environment components. The research objectives are the next: to consider the notion of augmented reality; to analyze the experience the augmented reality using within the cloud environment / system; to outline the prospects of the augmented reality using in educational institutions; to consider the technical conditions of the augmented reality use. The object of research is: the educational process in educational institutions of Ukraine of different levels of accreditation. The subject of research is: the educational process in a cloud-based environment in educational institutions of Ukraine. The research methods used are the next: analysis of scientific publications, observations. The results of the research are the next: on the basis of the analysis of scientific works, it has been established that the experience of the augmented reality using in the systems based on cloud technologies already exists. However, the success of such a combination has not yet been proven. Currently, laboratory tests are known, while the experiment was not carried out under natural conditions in control and experimental groups. It is revealed that the attraction of the augmented reality for the educators requires the development of new methodologies, didactic materials, updating and updating of the curriculum. The main conclusions and recommendations: the main principles of augmented reality use in the learning process are: designing of the environment that is flexible enough, attention should be paid to the teaching and didactic issues; adjusting the educational content for mastering the material provided by the curriculum; the research methods that can be used in training along with the elements of augmented reality are to be elaborated; development of adaptive materials; training of teachers, which will include augmented reality in educational practice.

Disruptive innovators take advantage of unique opportunities. Prior to COVID-19 progress in Latin America and the Caribbean for integrating technology, learning, and system change has been exceedingly slow. In this paper we first offer a general framework for transforming education. The framework focuses on the provision of technology, innovative ideas in learning and well-being, and what we call systemness which are favorable change factors at the local, middle/regional, and policy levels. We then take up the matter of system reform in Latin America and the Caribbean noting problems and potential. Then, we turn to a specific model in system change that we have developed called New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, a model developed in partnerships with groups of schools in ten countries since 2014. The model consists of three main components: 6 Global Competences (character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking), 4 learning elements (pedagogy, learning partnerships, learning environments, leveraging digital), and three system conditions (school culture, district/regional culture, and system policy). We offer a case study of relative success based on Uruguay with whom we have been working since 2014. Finally, we identify steps and recommendations for next steps in Latin America for taking action on system reform in the next perioda time that we consider critical for taking advantage of the current pandemic disruption. The next few years will be crucial for either attaining positive breakthroughs or slipping backwards into a reinforced status quo.

In the 21st century, business engagements are becoming increasingly global, and global teams are now an established form of organising work in multinational organisations. As a result, managing cultural diver-sity within a global team has become an essential part of ensuring motivation, creativity, innovation and efficiency in today’s business world.Global teams are typically composed of a diversity of experiences, frames of references, competencies, information and, not least, cultural backgrounds. As such, they hold a unique potential for delivering high performance in terms of innovative and creative approaches to global management tasks; however, in-stead of focusing on the potentials of cultural diversity, practitioners and studies of global teams tend to approach cultural diversity as a barrier to team success. This study explores some of the barriers that cultural diversity poses but also discusses its potential to leverage high performance in a global context.Our study highlights the importance of how team leaders and team members perceive ‘culture’ as both a concept and a social practice. We take issue with a notion of culture as a relatively fixed and homogeneous set of values, norms and attitudes shared by people of national communities; it is such a notion of culture that tends to underlie understandings that highlight the irreconcilability of cultural differences.Applying a more dynamic and context-dependent approach to culture as a meaning system that people negotiate and use to interpret the world, this study explores how global leadership teams can best reap the benefits of cultural diversity in relation to specific challenging areas of intercultural team work, such as leadership style, decision making, relationship building, strategy process, and communication styles. Based on a close textual interpretation of 31 semi-structured interviews with members of global leader-ship teams in eight Danish-owned global companies, our study identified different discourses and per-ceptions of culture and cultural diversity. For leaders of the global leadership teams (Danish/European) and other European team members, three understandings of cultural diversity in their global teams were prominent:1)Cultural diversity was not an issue2)Cultural diversity was acknowledged as mainly a liability. Diversities were expressed through adifference in national cultures and could typically be subsumed under a relatively fixed numberof invariable and distinct characteristics.3)Cultural diversity was an asset and expressions of culture had to be observed in the situationand could not simply be derived from prior understandings of cultural differences.A clear result of our study was that those leaders of global teams who drew on discourses of the Asian ‘Other’ adherred to the first two understandings of cultural diversity and preferred leadership styles that were either patriarchal or self-defined as ‘Scandinavian’. Whereas those leaders who drew on discourses of culture as dynamic and negotiated social practices adhered to the third understanding of cultural di-versity and preferred a differentiated and analytical approach to leading their teams.We also focused on the perceptions of team members with a background in the country in which the global teams were co-located. These ‘local’ team members expressed a nuanced and multifaceted perspective on their own cultural background, the national culture of the company, and their own position within the team, which enabled them to easily navigate between essentialist perceptions of culture while maintain-ing a critical stance on the existing cultural hegemonies. They recognised the value of their local knowledge and language proficiency, but, for those local members in teams with a negative or essentialist view of cultural diversity, it was difficult to obtain recognition of their cultural styles and specific, non-local competences. 3Our study suggeststhat the way global team members perceive culture, based on dominant societal dis-courses of culture, significantly affects the understandings of roles and positions in global leadership teams. We found that discourses on culture were used to explain differences and similarities between team members, which profoundly affected the social practicesand dynamics of the global team. We con-clude that only global teams with team leaders who are highly aware of the multiple perspectives at play in different contexts within the team hold the capacity to be alert to cultural diversity and to demonstrate agility in leveraging differences and similarities into inclusive and dynamic team practices.

Objective. To assess the comparative benefits and harms across three airway management approaches (bag valve mask [BVM], supraglottic airway [SGA], and endotracheal intubation [ETI]) by emergency medical services in the prehospital setting, and how the benefits and harms differ based on patient characteristics, techniques, and devices. Data sources. We searched electronic citation databases (Ovid® MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Scopus®) from 1990 to September 2020 and reference lists, and posted a Federal Register notice request for data. Review methods. Review methods followed Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Evidence-based Practice Center Program methods guidance. Using pre-established criteria, studies were selected and dual reviewed, data were abstracted, and studies were evaluated for risk of bias. Meta-analyses using profile-likelihood random effects models were conducted when data were available from studies reporting on similar outcomes, with analyses stratified by study design, emergency type, and age. We qualitatively synthesized results when meta-analysis was not indicated. Strength of evidence (SOE) was assessed for primary outcomes (survival, neurological function, return of spontaneous circulation [ROSC], and successful advanced airway insertion [for SGA and ETI only]). Results. We included 99 studies (22 randomized controlled trials and 77 observational studies) involving 630,397 patients. Overall, we found few differences in primary outcomes when airway management approaches were compared. • For survival, there was moderate SOE for findings of no difference for BVM versus ETI in adult and mixed-age cardiac arrest patients. There was low SOE for no difference in these patients for BVM versus SGA and SGA versus ETI. There was low SOE for all three comparisons in pediatric cardiac arrest patients, and low SOE in adult trauma patients when BVM was compared with ETI. • For neurological function, there was moderate SOE for no difference for BVM compared with ETI in adults with cardiac arrest. There was low SOE for no difference in pediatric cardiac arrest for BVM versus ETI and SGA versus ETI. In adults with cardiac arrest, neurological function was better for BVM and ETI compared with SGA (both low SOE). • ROSC was applicable only in cardiac arrest. For adults, there was low SOE that ROSC was more frequent with SGA compared with ETI, and no difference for BVM versus SGA or BVM versus ETI. In pediatric patients there was low SOE of no difference for BVM versus ETI and SGA versus ETI. • For successful advanced airway insertion, low SOE supported better first-pass success with SGA in adult and pediatric cardiac arrest patients and adult patients in studies that mixed emergency types. Low SOE also supported no difference for first-pass success in adult medical patients. For overall success, there was moderate SOE of no difference for adults with cardiac arrest, medical, and mixed emergency types. • While harms were not always measured or reported, moderate SOE supported all available findings. There were no differences in harms for BVM versus SGA or ETI. When SGA was compared with ETI, there were no differences for aspiration, oral/airway trauma, and regurgitation; SGA was better for multiple insertion attempts; and ETI was better for inadequate ventilation. Conclusions. The most common findings, across emergency types and age groups, were of no differences in primary outcomes when prehospital airway management approaches were compared. As most of the included studies were observational, these findings may reflect study design and methodological limitations. Due to the dynamic nature of the prehospital environment, the results are susceptible to indication and survival biases as well as confounding; however, the current evidence does not favor more invasive airway approaches. No conclusion was supported by high SOE for any comparison and patient group. This supports the need for high-quality randomized controlled trials designed to account for the variability and dynamic nature of prehospital airway management to advance and inform clinical practice as well as emergency medical services education and policy, and to improve patient-centered outcomes.
