Streszczenie:
AbstractWe here give Echinocoleus new ranking as a subgenus of Ptomaphagus. Ptomaphagus (Echinocoleus) acutus sp.nov. is described from the southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, Florida). It is the most plesiotypic member of a group in which all other species live in the western United States and (probably) adjacent Mexico. All are myrmecophilous with Pogonomyrmex and Aphaenogaster (= Novomessor) harvester ants. A phylogenetic analysis is given for the subgenus. The main synapomorphies of Echinocoleus, which are mostly interrelated with myrmecophily, are reduction of body length and br

Streszczenie:
In this work, teams of small mobile robots are used to test hypotheses about cooperative transport by ants. This study attempts to explain a decrease in steady-state transport speed with increasing team size that was previously observed in the ant Novomessor cockerelli . Two models of one-dimensional collective towing are compared: one in which transporters with different maximum speeds pull the payload with continuous, variable forces and another in which transporters with identical speeds pull with intermittent, unsynchronized forces. A statistical analysis of ant data supports the hypothesi

Streszczenie:
In this study, an olfactory associative conditioning paradigm was developed to study the learning and memory capabilities of Novomessor cockerelli ants. When the antennae of the ant come into contact with sucrose solution, the ant extends its tongue to consume the sucrose. The tongue reflex was conditioned by pairing an odor (conditioned stimulus) with sucrose (unconditioned stimulus) over ten trials. The ant’s tongue reflex in response to odor indicates that an association between the odor and the sucrose has been made in the ant’s brain. The second part of the study includes analyzing

Streszczenie:
Associative learning is a form of learning where an animal learns to associate a stimulus with a behavioral response. Associative learning has been generated in the laboratory for many species, including insects, by using classical conditioning. Previous experiments show that ants can learn to associate odors and colors with a sugar reward. When ants are trained to associate a stimulus with a sugar reward, they exhibit the proboscis extension response (PER) to the stimulus alone, but it was unknown whether ants are better at color association or odor association. In order to test this, two sep
