This article is devoted to the application of the field approach to the organization of the onomasticon of the military community. A modern linguistic personality communicates using varied vocabulary, a special place being occupied by proper names as one of the most important means of reflecting national culture. A highly effective approach to distinguishing and identifying systemic relations in the rich onomastic vocabulary as well as determining their structural, semantic, and functional properties is the field approach. In the traditional understanding of the onomastic field of the Russian language, the nucleus is made up of anthroponyms (personal names, patronymics, surnames, nicknames and pseudonyms), the near-nuclear zone, of anthropocentric proper names (theonyms, mythonyms, zoonyms and ethnonyms), while the peripheral zone, of proper names exhibiting features of the appellative-onymic boundary; at the same time, toponyms and cosmonyms are dispersed both in the nucleus and on the periphery, depending on the size of the object and whether it is well known or not. With regard to the closed military community, the field approach, together with the author’s anthropocentric criterion, allowed us to obtain a different distribution of proper names used by Russian servicemеn in communication. The centre of the nucleus is comprised of official anthroponyms of the full name (first of all, the surname), which are individualized, unmotivated, systemic and stable. In the peripheral zone of the nucleus are call signs and nicknames that precisely fulfil the nominative and distinguishing function; they are motivated, relatively systemic and changeable. On the periphery of the field, we find military ergonyms, chrematonyms, toponyms and chrononyms. Ergonyms and chrematonyms have weak individualizing properties, are motivated, systemic, stable and gravitate more towards the nucleus due to their frequent use by the linguistic personality. Military toponyms and chrononyms belong to the immediate periphery of the onomastic field, but are not equidistant from the nucleus: they are motivated and weakly individualize what is being named. However, chrononyms are more systematized and more stable in time. The study sheds some light on both the features of the onomasticon of military discourse and on many general issues of the theory of proper names.

Object Peripheral nerve field stimulation has been successfully used for many neuropathic syndromes. However, it has been reported as a treatment for trigeminal neuropathic pain or persistent idiopathic facial pain only in the recent years. Methods The authors present a review of the literature and their own series of 6 patients who were treated with peripheral nerve stimulation for facial neuropathic pain, reporting excellent pain relief and subsequent better social relations and quality of life. Results On average, pain scores in these patients decreased from 10 to 2.7 on the visual analog scale during a 17-month follow-up (range 0–32 months). The authors also observed the ability to decrease trigeminal pain with occipital nerve stimulation, clinically confirming the previously reported existence of a close anatomical connection between the trigeminal and occipital nerves (trigeminocervical nucleus). Conclusions Peripheral nerve field stimulation of the trigeminal and occipital nerves is a safe and effective treatment for trigeminal neuropathic pain and persistent idiopathic facial pain, when patients are strictly selected and electrodes are correctly placed under the hyperalgesia strip at the periphery of the allodynia region.

The activity of 132 neurons in the caudal part of the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPLc) of the thalamus was recorded from 23 anesthetized monkeys. All single thalamic units that could be excited by electrical search stimuli applied to the contralateral sciatic nerve were investigated. Responses of these cells to mechanical, thermal, and electrical stimuli applied in the periphery indicated that at least half of the sampled cells were nociceptive. Based on responses to graded mechanical stimuli applied to the periphery, 110 of the sampled cells that received a predominant input from cutaneous receptive fields were classified. There were 56 low-threshold, 39 wide dynamic range, and 15 high-threshold cells. The same neurons were also classified into five mechanical types based on a cluster analysis: types 1-5 contained 25, 34, 17, 10, and 24 cells, respectively. The fact that about half the population of cells belonged to either the wide dynamic or the high threshold group (or mechanical types 3-5) suggested that a large population of VPLc neurons respond to mechanical nociceptive stimuli either exclusively or preferentially. Responses of 63 thalamic neurons were tested to noxious heat pulses applied to their cutaneous receptive fields with a contact thermostimulator. Of these, 47 cells were excited, whereas only 16 cells did not respond. The peripheral nerve that innervated the receptive field of each of 82 thalamic neurons was stimulated with graded strengths to activate A fibers only or both A and C fibers. All tested cells responded to peripheral A fiber volleys. In addition, 42 of these cells responded to peripheral C fiber volleys. The C fiber responses could be either short lasting (a few hundreds of milliseconds) or long lasting (up to several seconds). The recording sites of 80 cells were reconstructed. Of these, 78 were in the VPLc nucleus and the remaining two were in the reticular nucleus of the thalamus. No obvious relationship between the response characteristics and the locations of the cells within the VPLc nucleus was found. Sampled thalamic units had a variety of sources of input from the periphery, including both cutaneous and/or deep tissue receptive fields. The majority of the cells, however, had exclusively cutaneous receptive fields. The sizes of the cutaneous receptive fields were often very small, so that nearly half (41%) of the receptive fields of cells sampled occupied an area of skin smaller than half the foot.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The article focuses on linguopragmatic potential of affixal derivatives in the semantic field of the novel “The Marquis of Roccaverdina” by L. Capuana, one of the most prominent representatives of Italian verism. The semantic field of the verism novel “The Marquis of Roccaverdina” is based on polarized reference groups (associated with positive and negative characters) that implement the opposition “feudal lords – poor population”. The reference group has a field structure and includes the subject (character) as a representative of a social stratum, his place of residence, surrounding objects, landscape. The nucleus of the reference group is a subject (character) belonging to a higher vs. lower social stratum, the pre-nuclear zone – the place of residence, surrounding objects, landscape, the near periphery – the characteristics of the place of residence, surrounding objects, landscape. The nucleus of the reference group determines the spreading of the semantic space in a certain direction depending on the evaluation of the character and sets the direction of the typification of the conditions of meaning creation. The field structure is based on the degree of determinism, which decreases in the direction from the nucleus to the periphery. When characterizing negative characters (belonging to the class of feudal lords), affixal derivatives with augmentative suffixes, pejorative suffixes, negative prefixes are used in the pre-nuclear zone, and on the near periphery – descriptors indicating the size of cultural artifacts and household items, which correlates with the greatness of the marquis and his family. Descriptors often function as epithets. To describe the landscape and natural phenomena surrounding negative characters, the author often uses the stylistic device of personification, and natural phenomena are correlated with their character traits and mental state. In the microcontext, lexical units of negative evaluation are used. In the speech of negative characters, deictics with the function of referent substitution are used, which reinforce the meaning of affixal derivatives with a negative prefix or pejorative suffixes. When characterizing positive characters (belonging to a lower class) affixal derivatives with diminutive suffixes are used in the pre-nuclear zone, descriptors indicating the small size of artifacts and household items are used in the near periphery; in themicro context, lexical units are used to denote impersonality. To describe the landscape and natural phenomena surrounding positive characters, the author often uses the stylistic device of personification, while natural phenomena are perceived as threatening and correlated with their state of depression and helplessness. The polarization of reference groups implementing the opposition "feudal lords – poor stratum of the population" is manifested in the semantic relation of contradiction, which include affixal derivatives and their descriptors. The semantic relations of contradiction are revealed in the stylistic device of antithesis used not only at the level of single phrase, but also at the transphrastic and textonomic level. The identification of the linguopragmatic potential of affixal derivatives is possible due to imposition of semantic connections in the semantic space of the novel. The author's choice of affixal derivatives is pragmatically conditioned.

Abstract Understanding how the packaging of chromatin in the nucleus is regulated and organized to guide complex cellular and developmental programmes, as well as responses to environmental cues is a major question in biology. Technological advances have allowed remarkable progress within this field over the last years. However, we still know very little about how the 3D genome organization within the cell nucleus contributes to the regulation of gene expression. The nuclear space is compartmentalized in several domains such as the nucleolus, chromocentres, telomeres, protein bodies, and the nuclear periphery without the presence of a membrane around these domains. The role of these domains and their possible impact on nuclear activities is currently under intense investigation. In this review, we discuss new data from research in plants that clarify functional links between the organization of different nuclear domains and plant genome function with an emphasis on the potential of this organization for gene regulation.

We estimated the spectrotemporal receptive fields of neurons in the songbird auditory thalamus, nucleus ovoidalis, and compared the neural representation of complex sounds in the auditory thalamus to those found in the upstream auditory midbrain nucleus, mesencephalicus lateralis dorsalis (MLd), and the downstream auditory pallial region, field L. Our data refute the idea that the primary sensory thalamus acts as a simple, relay nucleus: we find that the auditory thalamic receptive fields obtained in response to song are more complex than the ones found in the midbrain. Moreover, we find that linear tuning diversity and complexity in ovoidalis (Ov) are closer to those found in field L than in MLd. We also find prevalent tuning to intermediate spectral and temporal modulations, a feature that is unique to Ov. Thus even a feed-forward model of the sensory processing chain, where neural responses in the sensory thalamus reveals intermediate response properties between those in the sensory periphery and those in the primary sensory cortex, is inadequate in describing the tuning found in Ov. Based on these results, we believe that the auditory thalamic circuitry plays an important role in generating novel complex representations for specific features found in natural sounds.

Within the past two years, actin has been implicated in eukaryotic gene transcription by all three classes of RNA polymerase. Moreover, within just the past year, actin has been identified as a constituent of filaments attached to the nuclear pore complexes and extending into the nucleus. This review summarizes these and other very recent advances in the nuclear actin field and emphasizes the key present issues. On the one hand, we are confronted with a body of evidence for a role of actin in gene transcription but with no known structural basis; on the other hand, there is now evidence for polymeric actin—not likely in the classical F-actin conformation—in the nuclear periphery with no known function. In addition, numerous proteins that interact with either G- or F-actin are increasingly being detected in the nucleus, suggesting that both monomeric and oligomeric or polymeric forms of actin are at play and raising the possibility that the equilibrium between them, perhaps differentially regulated at various intranuclear sites, may be a major determinant of nuclear function.

Rapid, nongenomic effects of 17β-estradiol (E2) in endothelial cells are postulated to arise from membrane-associated estrogen receptors (ERs), which have not been visualized in vascular tissue. To identify membrane ERs, we used multiple site-directed ERα or ERβ antibodies to label en face rat cerebral and coronary arterial endothelia. Western blots revealed a novel 55-kDa ERα isoform. Three-dimensional images of cells labeled with these antibodies and markers for the nucleus and caveolin-1 were acquired with a wide-field microscope, deconvolved, and numerically analyzed. We found ERα in the nucleus and cell periphery, where one-third colocalized with caveolin-1. The receptor location was dependent on the epitope of the antibody. Human ovarian surface epithelium produced similar results; but in rat myometrium, the distribution was epitope independent and nuclear. ERβ distribution was predominately intranuclear and epitope independent. A small amount of ERα colocalized with ERβ within the nucleus. The results were identical in both arterial preparations and insensitive to E2. We postulate that the different ERα conformations at the membrane, in the nucleus, and between different cell types allow E2 to trigger cell- and location-specific signaling cascades.

Axons from the nucleus magnocellularis form a presynaptic map of interaural time differences (ITDs) in the nucleus laminaris (NL). These inputs generate a field potential that varies systematically with recording position and can be used to measure the map of ITDs. In the barn owl, the representation of best ITD shifts with mediolateral position in NL, so as to form continuous, smoothly overlapping maps of ITD with iso-ITD contours that are not parallel to the NL border. Frontal space (0°) is, however, represented throughout and thus overrepresented with respect to the periphery. Measurements of presynaptic conduction delay, combined with a model of delay line conduction velocity, reveal that conduction delays can account for the mediolateral shifts in the map of ITD.

The effect of transplantation of adult bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) into the freeze-lesioned left barrel field cortex in the rat was investigated by measurement of local cerebral glucose utilization (lCMRglc) in the anatomic structures of the whisker-to-barrel cortex sensory pathway. Bone marrow stromal cells or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) were injected intracerebrally into the boundary zone 1 h after induction of the freezing cortical lesion. Three weeks after surgery, the 2-[14C]deoxyglucose method was used to measure lCMRglc during right whisker stimulation. The volume of the primary necrotic freezing lesion was significantly reduced ( P<0.05), and secondary retrograde degeneration in the left ventral posteromedial (VPM) thalamic nucleus was diminished in the MSC-treated group. Local cerebral glucose utilization measurements showed that the freezing cortical lesion did not alter the metabolic responses to stimulation in the brain stem trigeminal nuclei, but eliminated the responses in the left VPM nucleus and periphery of the barrel cortex in the PBS-treated group. The left/right (stimulated/unstimulated) lCMRglc ratios were significantly improved in both the VPM nucleus and periphery of the barrel cortex in the MSC-treated group compared with the PBS-treated group ( P<0.05). These results indicate that MSC transplantation in adults may stimulate metabolic and functional recovery in injured neuronal pathways.

The article focuses on investigating the categorial features of the units belonging to functional-semantic class of response words of evaluation that express positive and negative axiological categories in Modern English. The linguistic status of response words is defined. Response words are viewed in the article as the units of communication which form the reaction to the words of the interlocutor or the situation itself. They comprise one-word or above-word ones which express agreement or disagreement with the communicant’s point of view and the variety of positive and negative emotions such as joy, delight, contempt, despair. The article deals with the structure of the functional field of the response words, the nucleus of which is comprised by interjections. The specific character of interjections is the ability to perform an expressive function and serve for the direct manifestation of feelings and volitional intentions. The modal-evaluative response words adjacent to the nucleus of the functional field are taken into account. Above-word response words as peripheral structures of the field are described. Response words with the sentence structure occupying the extreme periphery of the field are investigated. Idiomatic response words and non- idiomatic response words as the constituents of idiomatic and non-idiomatic zones of the functional-semantic field are specified. The further perspective of the research lies in determining the cognitive-pragmatic characteristics of axiological units. Linguo-cultural and ethnolinguistic peculiarities of axiological nominations may be identified. The changes of stereotypes in the English-speaking linguo-cultural community may be singled out.

1. Experiments were carried out in chloralose-anesthetized cats to study the responses of neurons in the lateral thalamus to excitation of afferent fibres from the knee joint. 2. Single- and multi-unit recordings were made with tungsten electrodes in dorsoventral penetrations through the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPL) during electrical stimulation of the medial articular nerve (MAN) of the cat's knee joint at an intensity sufficient to excite slowly conducting unmyelinated fibers. The locations of the recording sites were verified by recovering electrolytic lesion sites in histological sections (Nissl and cytochrome oxidase staining). 3. The average earliest latency for excitation of thalamic responses was 19.1 +/- 8.5 (SD) ms (n = 50). The threshold for excitation of most thalamic units was found to correspond to peripheral joint afferent fibers of the A-delta group. 4. The majority of neurons responding to MAN stimulation were found to be dorsal or ventral to the low-threshold cutaneous hindlimb region of the lateral division of the VPL (stereotaxic coordinates: AP 9.0-11.5; ML 7.0-9.5). In the ventral periphery of the VPL, most neurons responding to MAN stimulation (11/14) were wide dynamic range (WDR) with a discrete cutaneous receptive field on the hindpaw digits. Six WDR neurons were found dorsal to the hindlimb VPL with a convergent receptive field on the hindlimb (but not hindpaw digits). No nociceptive-specific knee joint units were found. 5. Other neurons were found dorsal to the hindlimb VPL with large receptive fields often encompassing the whole contralateral leg, including skin and deep hindlimb structures, possibly in a region described as the dorsal portion of the posterior complex (POd). Some neurons were found with no receptive field. 6. This study provides the first observations on the responses of lateral thalamic neurons to stimulation of the MAN of the cat knee joint. These results demonstrate a central pathway conveying impulses from specific deep joint afferents of the MAN to the peripheral region of the VPL and overlying region known as the POd, regions implicated in the transmission of nociceptive information.

In previous work, we have shown that sudden image displacements well outside the classical receptive field modulate the visual sensitivity of LGN relay cells. Here we report the effect of image displacements on the response versus contrast function. The stimuli consisted of a central spot of optimal size and polarity (contrast range: 3–98%), flashed alone or in the presence of a peripheral annulus (radii: 5–15 deg) containing a low spatial-frequency grating displaced at saccade-like velocities (shift). The most consistent effect of the shift on the response to a central spot was to reduce the responsiveness of Y relay cells and, to a lesser extent, of X relay cells. The reduction in responsiveness was primarily a divisive rather than a subtractive effect and could be modelled by assuming that a greater contrast was required to produce a given excitatory response. In the absence of a central spot, remote motion had inhibitory effects on the firing rates of the majority of relay cells, but its effect on retinal ganglion cells was mainly excitatory. When the shifting grating covered the classical receptive field and its periphery, facilitatory effects or suppressive effects, depending on the spatial phase of the pattern, were observed in both retinal and geniculate cells. Remote motion strongly suppresses the responsiveness of relay cells to stimuli within the classical receptive field. This suppressive effect involves intrageniculate processing and is primarily associated with a reduction in contrast gain. It is likely that shift suppression contributes to the loss of visual sensitivity observed in saccadic suppression.

Problem statement. The article presents lexical-and-semantic analysis of the anthropological concept “MAN” in the philosophical discourse of F. Bacon. The research is aimed at revealing lexical means of verbalization of the concept “MAN” in the philosophical works of F. Bacon, determine the features of its nominative field, which belong to its nuclear and peripheral areas and to analyze frame structure of the concept. Special attention is paid to the contents of the frame “properties of man” in terms of the correlation of the intellectual, sensual and spiritual components and their basic features. The research is aimed at detailed analysis of the frame “properties of man”. Research results. The features of the nucleus of the concept “MAN” are: “sociocentricity”, “individuality”, “specificity”, “commonality”, “high moral qualities”. The near-nucleus area of the concept “MAN” is represented by the features: “category of planetary scale”, “equality”, “unity”, “integrity”. Far periphery area of the concept “MAN” is structured by the following features: “mental abilities”, “sensual and ethical abilities”, “power”, “determination”, “productivity”, “maturity and self-awareness”, “empirical abilities”. Conclusion. Nominative field of the concept ”MAN” in the philosophical discourse of F. Bacon is structured by three frames, representing features, functions and nature of man. Frame “nature of man” contains the following slots: “intellectual abilities”, “sensual abilities” and “spiritual abilities”of man. The largest number of features (positive, negative and neutral) is included in the slot “intellectual abilities” of man. Slot “sensual abilities” represents the features of “ineffectiveness” and “imperfection of nature” of the concept. Slot “spiritual abilities” contains the features of “superiority” and “priority”. The key components of the anthropological nature in the picture of the world of F. Bacon are mind and intellect.

The experimental ratios of the neutron to the proton densities at the nuclear periphery (≃ half-density radius + 2.5 fm) determined using very low energy anti-proton annihilation studies are compared with the predictions of the semi-phenomenological model of the nucleon density distributions. The model incorporates correctly two physical requirements: the correct asymptotic behavior (r → ∞) and the behavior near the center (r → 0). The model gives a good account of the experiment. The results of the more sophisticated, microscopic mean field calculations like non-relativistic Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) with Skyrme type interactions though are qualitatively similar, the model density results are relatively closer to the experiment.

The nuclear envelope (NE) physically separates the genetic machinery residing in the nucleus from protein synthesis taking place in the cytoplasm. Bidirectional transport of proteins, RNAs and RNP particles between these two compartments is mediated by the nuclear pore complexes (NPCs), large (-120 MDa) supramolecular assemblies embedded in the NE and being built of -100 different polypeptides, called nucleoporins. Extensive structural studies have revealed the 3D architecture of NPCs, and epitopes of several nucleoporins have been localized within their 3D structure.In an attempt to go beyond the current consensus model of the NPC (Fig. lc, inset), we have embarked on a more systematic structural analysis of the molecular architecture of native NPCs. This is achieved by field-emission (FETEM; Fig. la) or energy-filtering (EFTEM; Fig. lb) TEM of completely unfixed and unstained Xenopus oocyte NEs embedded in thick (i.e. -200 nm) amorphous ice so that the 3D organization of the cytoplasmic and nuclear periphery of the NPCs (i.e. the cytoplasmic fibrils and nuclear baskets) is fully preserved (Fig. lb).

Aim. To determine the structural organization (core and periphery) of the conceptual field “GRATITUDE” in the Russian language, to clarify the scope of interpretation of this concept and its status.Methodology. The study includes analysis of dictionary definitions, corpus analysis; distributional analysis highlighting the seme or sememe of the keyword; conceptual analysis, including a description of the structure of the concept; linguoculturological method to establish the linguistic, cultural and sociological features of the linguistic units under consideration.Results. The description of the structure of the conceptual field “GRATITUDE” made it possible to identify several active semantic zones, united by the archeme of ‘gratitude’ / ‘appreciation’: core - ‘being thankful’, ‘recognition’; perinuclear zone - ‘respect’, ‘duty’ and ‘love’; periphery: near periphery - ‘praise/ approval’, ‘evaluation measure’, ‘encouragement’, ‘reward’, ‘payment’; distant periphery - ‘intention’, ‘compliment’, ‘reciprocity’, ‘courtesy’. The core of the field consists of the basic words and expressions used to express these ‘gratitude’ and ‘being thankful’, which are the basic ethical formulas for expressing interpersonal relationships, which are a special speech genre, a category. Near-nuclear and peripheral elements expand the semantic space of the field and make it possible to express gratitude in various contexts and with additional shades of meaning: peripheral gradual semes of politeness and formality; semes of support and assistance; semes of expressing positive emotions and feelings; semes of encouragement and praise; semes of recognition and respect, indicating various non-verbal ways of expressing gratitude (“facial expressions”, “gesture”, “gift” “emoticons”). In the conceptual field “GRATITUDE” semantic associative series with the concepts of “reciprocity”, “respect”, “mercy” and “love” are established.Research implications. The theoretical and/or practical significance of the study of the conceptual field “GRATITUDE” in the Russian language is undeniable, since in the Russian language not only key lexical units and phraseological units have been identified, but also many linguistic aspects of modern communicative practices remain not fully explored. The results of the study can be used in the practice of teaching courses “Modern Russian Language” (Lexicology), “Stylistics”, “Cognitive Linguistics”, “Linguistic Analysis of Text”, “Philological Analysis of Text”, “Linguoculturology”, “Culture of Speech”, “Ethics of Speech Behaviour”; the materials are useful in lexicographic practice, as well as in the study of Russian as a foreign language.

The article focuses on discovering emotional and evaluative overtones in Vladimir Nabokov's short story "Terror." Based on a thorough examination of the story and meticulous analysis of dictionary and thesaurus definitions of the notions conveying emotions in it, the author constructs a text associative semantic field (TASF) with the nucleus represented by the lexeme "terror" and the periphery with its synonyms and associations. Such an approach to researching an artwork's overall emotional tone constitutes the paper's novelty. The study has demonstrated that many words belonging to the field appear to be involved in diverse linguistic devices that are dispersed throughout the story and create a more sophisticated layer of meaning and subcontext that allows for a more profound understanding of the character's emotional state and detection of hidden emotional and evaluative overtones. Specifically, apart from the leading emotion of terror and its synonyms from the fear cluster, multiple emotional and evaluative overtones have been discovered, including terror-disgust, terror-rage, terror-surprise, and terrorgrief. Overall, the comprehensive linguistic investigation has proven the complexity and depth of human emotions, the unique character of their verbal representation, and the multi-layered nature of the short story where they are so skillfully concealed.

Abstarct: The article is devoted to the analysis of the concept of "justice" in the novel “Arhat” by K. Akmatov which was later translated into English by Elizabeth Adams. The verbal representation of this concept is presented in terms of nucleus and periphery level. A comparison of these means makes it possible to identify similarities and differences in the consciousness of the collective and the individual. The examples for the analysis were selected from both original and translated texts. Along with study of the language picture of the world , the concept “justice” will be studied from linguacultural point of view and lexical semantic field will be revealed . We investigated the receptive fields of principal cells from the cat's lateral geniculate nucleus cells. About 20% of the X type neurones showed clear nonlinearities of summation when stimulated by two simultaneously onset, small bars of light. The possible source of this nonlinearity was studied on a specially designed model of a one-layer neuronal network with inhibitory, recurrent interactions, intended to mimic the inhibitory influence exerted on geniculate relay cells by perigeniculate interneurones. The model, when activated from periphery by two stimuli-like input patterns, produced at the output side the nonsymmetrical profiles of the receptive fields sensitivity, similar to those obtained in real experiments. This nonlinear output appeared when some of the relay cells were inhibited below their firing level threshold and this effect was spread through the network by lateral inhibitory connections. It is concluded that physiologically observed nonlinearities of the order of single receptive field mechanisms can be predicted by a simple recurrent network.

The appropriate field structure (nucleus, near-nucleus zone and periphery) of the microconceptosphere Sviatki was modeled and the hierarchical organization (superconcepts, presuperconcept, basic concepts, subconcepts) was presented. But the technique of the analysis of the lingvoculturological concepts suggested in this work consists of 3 stages: 1) formation of the nominative field of concept and definition of its nominative density; 2) description of the structural elements of the concept; 3) modeling of its field structure. During the analysis of every concept the means of its linguistic expression, including their paradigmatic and derivational peculiarities were characterized. Photonuclear reactions are induced by the strong electromagnetic field generated by ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. These processes have been extensively studied in ultraperipheral collisions, where the impact parameter is larger than twice the nuclear radius. In recent years, the observation of coherent J/ψ photoproduction at very low transverse momentum has been claimed in nucleus−nucleus (A−A) collisions with nuclear overlap, based on the measurement of an excess in the J/ψ yield with respect to hadroproduction expectations. Such quarkonium measurements can help to constrain the nuclear gluon distribution at low Bjorken-x and high energy. The photoproduced quarkonium is expected to preserve the polarization of the incoming photon due to the s-channel helicity conservation. In this contribution, we report on the new preliminary measurements of the y-differential cross section and the first polarization analysis of coherently photoproduced J/ψ in peripheral Pb−Pb collisions with the ALICE detector at forward rapidity in the dimuon decay channel. Comparison with models will be shown when available.

Язык является знаковой системой, поэтому он может отражать чувства и эмоции человека. Объектом исследования является эмоциональный концепт Freude (радость) в немецкой лингвокультуре, а предметом - выявляемые в ходе лингвистического анализа изменения в содержании эмоционального концепта. Цель исследования состоит в установлении таких содержательных сдвигов. Предполагается, что эмоциональный концепт подвержен трансформации, вызванной социокультурными факторами, к которым можно отнести наряду с изменениями ценностных ориентаций и изменениями в системе коммуникаций. Эмоциональный концепт имеет полевую структуру и может быть реконструирован через анализ его составляющих. Language is an iconic system, so it can reflect a person's feelings and emotions. The object of the study is the emotional concept Freude (joy) in German linguistic culture. The subject is changes in the content of the emotional concept identified during linguistic analysis. The aim of the study is to establish such meaningful shifts. The authors believe that the emotional concept is subject to transformation caused by sociocultural factors, which can be attributed along with changes in value orientations and changes in the communication system. The emotional concept as knowledge of the sociocultural deterministic emotional sphere has a complex multilevel field structure and can be reconstructed through the analysis of its constituents. Therefore, the semantic fields method and the free associative experiment method are used as the main research methods. As a result, the lexic-semantic field Freude (joy) is mapped to the associative field. The scientific significance of the work is the possibility of experimental establishment of the content of emotional concepts. The results obtained showed that the nucleus of the lexic-semantic field Freude (joy) and the associative field of the word partially coincide. However, the configuration of the field changes: nuclear constituents move to the periphery and vice versa. The transformation of the concept manifests itself in changing the connotation of the word Freude (joy). The practical value of the study lies in the possibility of applying the developed methodology in the practice of the university teaching of intercultural communication, linguoculturology etc.

Introduction: Analysis of nuclear texture features as a measure of nuclear chromatin changes has been proven to be useful when measured on thin (5–6 μm) tissue sections using conventional 2D bright field microscopy. The drawback of this approach is that most nuclei are not intact because of those thin sections. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) allows measurements of texture in 3D reconstructed nuclei. The aim of this study was to develop 3D texture features that quantitatively describe changes in chromatin architecture associated with malignancy using CLSM images. Methods: Thirty-five features thoughtfully chosen from 4 categories of 3D texture features (discrete texture features, Markovian features, fractal features, grey value distribution features) were selected and tested for invariance properties (rotation and scaling) using artificial images with a known grey value distribution. The discriminative power of the 3D texture features was tested on artificially constructed benign and malignant 3D nuclei with increasing nucleolar size and advancing chromatin margination towards the periphery of the nucleus. As a clinical proof of principle, the discriminative power of the texture features was assessed on 10 benign and 10 malignant human prostate nuclei, evaluating also whether there was more texture information in 3D whole nuclei compared to a single 2D plane from the middle of the nucleus. Results: All texture features showed the expected invariance properties. Almost all features were sensitive to variations in the nucleolar size and to the degree of margination of chromatin. Fourteen texture features from different categories had high discriminative power for separating the benign and malignant nuclei. The discrete texture features performed less than expected. There was more information on nuclear texture in 3D than in 2D. Conclusion: A set of 35 3D nuclear texture features was used successfully to assess nuclear chromatin patterns in 3D images obtained by confocal laser scanning microscopy, and as a proof of principle we showed that these features may be clinically useful for analysis of prostate neoplasia.

The article presents the results of a free associative experiment with 105 words-stimuli of advertising vocabulary. The study was conducted in 2011 and 2012 among 732 students from different regions of Ukraine. The quantitative methods of calculation of stereotyping and diversity of reactions are applied. Stereotyping is defined as the process of formation, preservation and functioning of stereotyped word-stimulus relations and reactions in the minds of native speakers. The level of stereotyped determined as a percentage, which is three indicators of reaction of associative fields, or as the average number of different responses to the stimulus word. Results. Analyzed the associative field with high (word stimuli PROFIT) and the lowest (word stimuli DISCOUNT, NEW, STEREOTYPE) level of stereotyped and defined the key vectors of association. The most repeated reactions in associative fields of words-stimuli of the advertising vocabulary have he range from 40 to 355 times. The vectors of associating, object, subject and estimation, where the estimation can be both neutral and positive or negative, turned out to be common for these associative fields. For example, the word-stimuli DISCOUNT in the associative field has the advantage of positive evaluation, and the word- stimuli STEREOTYPE – negative. A high degree of diversity has associative stimulus fields of MUSIC and COLOR. Conclusion. Vectors of associating, which are distinguished on the basis of the degree of stereotyped reactions of the associative field, included in the core of language consciousness and allow to establish a typical for the average native speaker of the language "cultural core". To trace the persistence of stereotypical vectors of associating is possible with the mapping data, wherein a time of fixing. On the example of two associative fields, MUSIC and TIME saw how the content of the associative field changes over time, where reactions from the far periphery enter the nucleus and vice versa.

The research features communicative behavior of the logical-grammatical category of predicativity, its realization in speech, and field organization of the sentence in the modern German language. The study is focused on the means that shape the periphery of the predicative field. The subject of the study is the categorical meaning of predicativity, which considers any linguistic phenomenon from its meaning (attributive meaning) to its form (explicit and implicit ways of expressing predicativity) and is based on such abstract linguistic predicative unit as the predicative sign. The authors pay particular attention to such syncretic means of implicit predicativeness as close explicative syntagm, compound words (copulative and determinative composites) on the periphery of the predicative field. By applying the extrapolation method of the predicativity test to the level of these structures, the authors have revealed a "collapsed" predicative core, a kind of predicative "ellipse": a two-step transformation that allows one to unfold a predicative "ellipse" into a "nuclear" sentence. The results obtained can be used in theoretical grammar and lexicology.

Discrete anatomic structures in the monkey somatic sensory thalamus may segregate input arising from different peripheral receptors and from different parts of the body. It has been proposed that these structures serve as components of modality- and place-specific pathways from the periphery to the cortex. We now test this hypothesis by examining the modality- and place-specific segregation of sensations at sites where microstimulation (μA currents) within the region of ventral caudal (Vc; human principal somatic sensory nucleus) evokes somatic sensations. Microstimulation was delivered in an ascending staircase protocol consisting of different numbers of pulses (4–100) presented at different frequencies (10–200 Hz) during awake thalamic surgery for movement disorders. The results demonstrate that the part of the body where microstimulation evoked sensation (projected field) and the descriptors of nonpainful sensations were usually uniform across the staircase. These results strongly support the existence of psychophysical elements of place and modality specificity in the Vc thalamus. The proportion of sites at which the sensation included more than one part of the body almost always stayed constant over current intervals (plateaus) of 10 μA. Similar plateaus were not found for sites with more than one descriptor, suggesting that elements of modality-specificity are smaller than and located within those for place-specificity. The intensity of sensations varied with the number of stimulation pulses for mechanical/tingle and cool sensations. The results provide strong evidence for psychophysically defined elements that are responsible for modality specificity of nonpainful sensations, place specificity, and intensity coding of somatic sensation in the human thalamus.

The present article analyzes the the model of the concept of «migrant» with the particular focus on the evaluative component of this concept that can be observed through the linguistic consciousness of Russian speakers, as a reflection of the value picture of the World typical for Russian society. The increase in mass migration flows to Russia, extensive media coverage of migrant problems and, as a consequence, greater attention to the problems associated with language adaptation of migrants, national language security as well as increased language conflict potential determine the relevance of the chosen research direction. Free associative experiment was used as a method of study, which allows to reveal the whole range of evaluative nuances. As a result, a field evaluative model of the concept of «migrant» was presented, the nucleus being comprised by neutral, positive and rational evaluation while negative, legal, aesthetic, ethical, theological and sensor evaluation being in the periphery.

Statement of the problem. The semantic-cognitive method of language analysis as a means of studying concepts is of interest, because it allows one to identify the cognitive attributes of the concept on a wide and representative material. In the present study, the claimed method is presented in part regarding the analysis of lexicographic data and the cognitive interpretation of the contexts of the use of Atomkraftnominative field lexemes in German. The purpose of the article is to establish the cognitive features of the Atomkraft nominative field lexemes, codified in dictionaries and revealed during the analysis of the text corpus of publications in the media and blogs from 1980 to 2014, for the subsequent construction of a field model of the concept. Of particular interest is the effect of technological disasters in the nuclear energy sector that occurred during this period on the frequency of use and semantics of designated lexical units. Results. Based on the analysis of vocabulary entries, as well as the involvement of a representative text corpus, it is established that the dominant cognitive feature of the concept is “rejection of nuclear energy”, the most widely represented by the tokenAtomenergie. The general field structure of the concept, taking into account all nominative units, is as follows: the core is a sign of “abandonment of nuclear energy” (31%); the near periphery – “political aspects” and “dangers of nuclear power” (31%); the far periphery – “environmental issues” and “the future of nuclear power” (17%); the outer periphery – “nuclear power as one of the problems of our time” and “peaceful use of nuclear energy” (9%). Conclusion. The question of whether there is a correlation between the frequency of use of the lexical units of the field in question and the technological disasters occurring in the world continues to remain debatable. In the framework of the presented study, no reliable evidence of such a relationship was revealed. In the course of the work, it was found that the peak of the use of lexical units of the nominative field occurred in 2008–2009, when preparations for and pre-election campaigns were held in Germany, which suggests the greater influence of the political situation on the semantic content of the concept. This problem, however, requires further research on an expanded corpus of texts.

1. Mapping experiments were performed in the region of the ventral posterolateral nucleus of the lateral thalamus in pentobarbitone-anesthetized cats with the aim to locate foci with input from the electrically stimulated pelvic nerve. The locations of the recording sites were verified in Nissl-stained histological sections with reference to electrolytic lesions. 2. Of the 68 visceroceptive thalamic neurons identified, 63% were located in the periphery of the ventral posterolateral nucleus (VPLp) and 34% in the dorsal, lateral, and medial aspects of the posterior complex (POd, POl, and POm, respectively) directly adjacent to VPLp. The region surrounding the middle and caudal part of the ventral posterolateral nucleus (VPL) received a much denser input from the pelvic nerve than that around the rostral pole of VPL. 3. The response latencies of the thalamic neurons to pelvic nerve stimulation ranged from 10 to 65 ms (median: 16 ms; interquartile distance: 12–20 ms) indicating a transmission of information from the pelvic space via small and large diameter myelinated fibers. 4. Seventy-nine percent of the visceroceptive neurons tested (n = 58), in addition, had low threshold somatic receptive fields that were located in 67% of the cases in regions of the lower back, the thigh, the tail and/or the heel and in 26% of the cases on the hindfoot. None of the 40 visceroceptive neurons tested with noxious mechanical stimulation of the skin responded to this kind of stimulus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Using the term semantic field in the work, we consider it as a symbolic model of the organization of the sector of extralinguistic reality, which has a complex structure, the core of which is a concept, around the nuclear sphere – a set of concepts similar to the synonymous core and actualized in micro- and macro-contexts, and the periphery - interpretations of these texts and concepts. In a broad sense, semantic fields make up a picture of the world, but have blurred boundaries. This means that in the process of the development of linguistic culture, there is a continuous interpenetration and mutual influence of conceptual fields opposed in meaning. We introduce the lexeme suit into the semantic field “suit”, which has a multidimensional structure, since its elements illustrate not only linguistic means, but also cultural extralinguistic choices. Therefore, we insist on linguistic and extralinguistic factors that create the filling of the named field. We consider the linguistic parameters that regulate the allocation and description of a specific semantic field and declare it as follows: the formation of SP takes place around a defined integral meaning, taking into account objective external factors and the real capabilities of the researcher; the composition of SP includes those lexemes in the semantic structure of which there is a sema, which received the status of integral for the studied verbal group; the semantic structure of the constituents of the field is qualified based on the dictionary definition; according to the position of the integral semantic component in the content of the lexical unit, its place in the SP structure is determined - in the nuclear, central or peripheral part. Extralinguistic factors include: 1) social roles that determine the specificity of the semantic field of costume; 2) human habits; 3) wealth / poverty; 4) the person’s age; 5) the cultural stratum to which a person belongs, perhaps some fashion trend; 6) season, time of day, area, place of event; 7) author’s speech: the filling of the semantic field “costume” depends on linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, among which is the image of the author, because it is through him, through the choice of language means, that we have different semantic fields in artistic texts; 8) fashion.

<em>The article deals with the complex analysis of the concept Birth of the microconceptosphere Sviatkiprojected for studying the peculiarities of its reflection in the synchronistical and diachronic aspects, as well as for clarifying of the specific character of its reflection in the hierarchical system of the linguistic world-image. Keeping within the limits of the lingvoculturological approach of the linguistic conceptology, in the research the notions such as conceptosphere, concept, conceptual microfield were considered. In the structure of the microconceptosphere Sviatki46 central concepts distributed to 10 conceptual microfields were distinguished. The appropriate field structure (nucleus, near-nu-cleus zone and periphery) of the microconceptosphere Sviatkiwas modeled and the hierarchical organization (superconcepts, presuperconcept, basic concepts, subconcepts) was presented. But the technique of the analysis of the lingvoculturological concepts suggested in this work consists of 3 stages: 1) formation of the nominative field of concept and definition of its nominative density; 2) separation and description of the structural elements of the concept; 3) modeling of its field structure. During the analysis of every concept the means of its linguistic expression, including their paradigmatic and derivational peculiarities were characterized. The research of the central concepts of the microconceptosphere Sviatkipermitted to discover the specific character of the national mentality of the Ukrainians within the limits of this fragment of the linguistic world-image.</em>

1. The ability of ferrets to localize sounds in space was determined before and after large unilateral lesions of the inferior colliculus. Three animals sustained restricted lesions that destroyed the inferior colliculus caudally but spared some tissue rostrally. These restricted lesions did not extend substantially beyond the cytoarchitectonic boundaries of the inferior colliculus. Four animals received more extensive lesions that destroyed all of the inferior colliculus, including the rostral pole. These lesions also involved to various degrees other midbrain structures, including the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and the lateral tegmentum. Psychophysical curves and minimum audible angles were obtained for midline and left and right lateral fields. Comparisons were made of deficits ipsilateral and contralateral to the lesion. 2. The animals were tested in a semicircular apparatus with loudspeakers located at various positions around the periphery. Separate sound localization tests were conducted for midline, left, and right field positions. In each test the animals were trained first to discriminate between speakers separated by 60 degrees. They were then tested with progressively smaller angles of speaker separation to obtain their psychophysical threshold (minimum audible angle). All critical tests of sound localization were based on the ability of animals to identify the location of a 45-ms noise burst presented at the beginning of each trial. Correct responses were rewarded by delivery of a small quantity of water from spouts located around the perimeter of the apparatus. 3. Unilateral lesions restricted to the inferior colliculus had relatively little effect on sound localization. All three animals with restricted lesions were still capable of localizing a single noise burst and minimum audible angles were similar before and after surgery for midline, left, and right field tests. There was no difference in postoperative performance ipsilateral and contralateral to the lesion site. 4. More extensive unilateral lesions that included the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and the lateral tegmentum as well as the inferior colliculus resulted in severe deficits in sound localization. Each of the four animals with large unilateral lesions had a substantial impairment in sound localization in the field contralateral to the lesion site. Postoperative performance in the contralateral field was too low to obtain a minimum audible angle for these animals. Midline sound localization was also affected in some cases but ipsilateral sound localization was only slightly affected.

Although the clinical use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) is increasing, its basic mechanisms of action are still poorly understood. Platinum/iridium electrodes were inserted into the subthalamic nucleus of rats with unilateral 6-OHDA-induced lesions of the medial forebrain bundle. Six behavioral parameters were compared with respect to their potential to detect DBS effects. Locomotor function was quantified by (i) apomorphine-induced rotation, (ii) initiation time, (iii) the number of adjusting steps in the stepping test, and (iv) the total migration distance in the open field test. Sensorimotor neglect and anxiety were quantified by (v) the retrieval bias in the corridor test and (vi) the ratio of migration distance in the center versus in the periphery in the open field test, respectively. In our setup, unipolar stimulation was found to be more efficient than bipolar stimulation for achieving beneficial long-term DBS effects. Performance in the apomorphine-induced rotation test showed no improvement after 6 weeks. DBS reduced the initiation time of the contralateral paw in the stepping test after 3 weeks of DBS followed by 3 weeks without DBS. Similarly, sensorimotor neglect was improved. The latter two parameters were found to be most appropriate for judging therapeutic DBS effects.

<strong>Abstract.</strong> The article analyzes the results of the free associative experiment, which was conducted among first-year students during 2016-2018. According to the frequency of reactions, the authors model the structure of the associative field: nucleus, body and periphery; define the morphological and semantic groups of associations on the word-stimulus &lsquo;Europe&rsquo; obtained during the experiment, analyze the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships among the reactions, build the structure of the resulting associative field. The responses of respondents are significantly dominated by nouns; occasionally occur adjectives, verbs, adverbs and pronouns; adjectives and adverbs are mostly colored with emotions and estimations. Phrases make a significant group of associations phrases (about one fifth). Among the above mentioned things, toponyms and surnames of well-known political figures are named. Semantically, all associations are divided in general cultural, economic and political, such ones that express aesthetic perception of the word-stimulus, as well as those related to travel and leisure. Special attention in the article is given to emotional coloring of reactions (they are divided in positive, negative and neutral). Thus, the material presented in the work reflects, to a certain extent, the perception of the word-stimulus &lsquo;Europe&rsquo; by contemporary student youth.

This article studies the linguistic worldview of healthy and sick people and its reflection in various spheres of communication. Examples of verbalization of important components of human health and disease are analysed here. For materials, the authors turned to the results of surveys, mass media texts, and TV projects. Based on the data studied, the following conditions for the development of healthy people’s linguistic worldview were singled out: positive thinking; linguistic ecological monitoring of language use and appropriate regulations in the state linguistic policy; strengthening the communicative component in the educational programmes in schools and universities. For the sick, these conditions are: manipulating a person’s communicative consciousness by means of language-game in TV projects, using negatively coloured vocabulary/information in mass media texts, and bastardizing the language. The authors established that the linguistic worldview of a healthy/sick person directly depends on his or her linguistic consciousness, which is formed under the influence of several factors, including the language, which plays a major role in creating cognitive and verbal structures of social consciousness. Further, it is noted that any society is prone to being divided into the healthy and the sick by the criterion of otherness, highlighting significant differences in their communicative behaviour and language use, which is reflected in the linguistic worldview that can be presented in the form of a semantic field with a nuclear and a peripheral zone. These zones represent a healthy (nucleus) and a sick (periphery) society. At the verbal level, various spheres of a healthy/sick person’s life, perceived positively or negatively, are mirrored in the person’s worldview. In this respect, a healthy society is thought of as more positive and ecological in terms of communication, while a sick society is seen as more negative and non-ecological. To prevent risks of failed communication, it is essential to create conditions for ecological communicative interaction.

AbstractAn antiserum directed against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-limiting enzyme in the synthesis of dopamine, was used to study the pigeon retina. Labeled cells were observed in both the inner nuclear layer (INL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL). Two populations of TH-immunoreactive neurons were observed in the INL. Some of these cells were 7−10 μ in diameter and gave rise to processes that arborized in three Layers of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). These cells appeared similar to the dopaminergic amacrine cells described previously (Marc, 1988). Other labeled cells in the INL were 12−20 μ in diameter and were recognizable as a previously described subpopulation of TH-immunoreactive displaced ganglion cells (Britto et al., 1988).A population of labeled cells was observed in the GCL. Counts of these cells in two retinae revealed 5000 and 7000 cells, respectively. They ranged in size from 8−15 μ in diameter in the central retina and from 8−20 m in diameter in the peripheral retina. The density of labeled cells was highest in the central retina and red field and lowest in the retinal periphery. The difference in cell size and cell density as a function of eccentricity is characteristic of the total population of ganglion cells in the avian retina (Ehrlich, 1981; Hayes, 1982). Some of the TH-positive cells in the GCL could be classified as ganglion cells for two reasons: (1) The axons of many of the TH-positive cells in the GCL were TH-immunoreactive as well and could be followed to the optic nerve head. (2) The injection of rhodamine-labeled microspheres into the nucleus geniculatus lateralis, pars ventralis (GLv), resulted in the retrograde labeling of many of the TH-positive cells in the contralateral retina.

AbstractIn in-vitro preparations of both macaque and human retina, intracellular injections of Neurobiotin and horseradish peroxidase were used to characterize the morphology, depth of stratification, and mosaic organization of a type of bistratified ganglion cell. This cell type, here called the small bistratified cell, has been shown to project to the parvocellular layers of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (Rodieck, 1991) and is therefore likely to show color-opponent response properties.In both human and macaque, the two dendritic tiers of the bistratified cell are narrowly stratified close to the inner and outer borders of the inner plexiform layer. The inner tier is larger in diameter and more densely branched than the outer tier and gives rise to distinct spine-like branchlets bearing large, often lobulated heads. By contrast the smaller, outer tier is sparsely branched and relatively spine-free.In human retina, the small bistratified cells range in dendritic field diameter from ∼50 µm in central retina to ∼400 µm in the far periphery. The human small bistratified cells are about 20% larger in dendritic-field diameter than their counterparts in the macaque. However, when the difference in retinal magnification between human and macaque is taken into account, the small bistratified cells are similar in size in both species. In macaque, the small bistratified cell has a dendritic-field size that is ~10% larger than that of the magnocellular-projecting parasol ganglion cell. Human small bistratified ganglion cells tend to have smaller dendritic-field diameters than parasol cells. This is because parasol ganglion cells are larger in human than in macaque retina (Dacey &amp; Petersen, 1992).In macaque retina, intracellular injections of Neurobiotin revealed heterotypic tracer coupling to a distinct mosaic of amacrine cells and probable homotypic coupling to an array of neighboring ganglion cells around the perimeter of the injected cell's dendritic tree. The amacrine cell mosaic had a density of 1700 cells/mm2 in peripheral retina. Individual amacrines had small, densely branched and bistratified dendritic fields. From the homotypic coupling, it was possible to estimate for the small bistratified cell a coverage factor of ~1.8, and a density of ~1% of the total ganglion cells in central retina, increasing to ~6–10% in the retinal periphery.The estimated density, dendritic-field size, and depth of stratification all suggest that the small bistratified ganglion cell type is the morphological counterpart of the common short-wavelength sensitive or ‘blue-ON’ physiological type.

The effects of peripheral nerve transection on the cuneate nucleus were studied in anesthetized raccoons using extracellular, single-unit recordings. The somatotopic organization of the cuneate nucleus first was examined in intact, control animals. The cuneate nucleus in the raccoon is organized with the digits represented in separate cell clusters. The dorsal cap region of the cuneate nucleus contains a representation of the claws and hairy skin of the digits. Within the representation of the glabrous skin, neurons with rapidly adapting properties tended to be segregated from those with slowly adapting properties. The representations of the distal and proximal pads on a digit also were segregated. Electrical stimulation of two adjacent digits provided a detailed description of the responses originating from the digit that contains the tactile receptive field (the on-focus digit) and from the adjacent (off-focus) digit. Stimulation of the on-focus digit produced a short latency excitation in all 99 neurons tested, with a mean of 10.5 ms. These responses had a low threshold (426 μA). Stimulation of an off-focus digit activated 65% of these neurons. These responses had a significantly longer latency (15.3 ms) than on-focus responses and the threshold was more than twice as large. Two to five months after amputation of digit 4, 97 cells were tested with stimulation of digits 3 and 5. A total of 44 were in the intact regions of the cuneate nucleus. They had small receptive fields on intact digits and their responses to electrical stimulation did not differ from the control neurons. The remaining 53 neurons were judged to be deafferented and in the fourth digit region on the basis of their location with respect to intact neurons. All but two of these cells had receptive fields that were much larger than normal, often including more than one digit and part of the palm. When compared with the off-focus control neurons, their responses to electrical stimulation had lower thresholds and an increased response probability and magnitude. The latencies of these cells did not decrease, however, and were the same as the off-focus control values. The enhanced responses of the deafferented neurons to adjacent digit stimulation indicate that there is a strengthening of synapses that were previously ineffective. The increased proportion of neurons that could be activated after amputation suggests that there is also a growth of new connections. This experiment demonstrates that reorganization in the adult somatotopic system does occur at the level of the dorsal column nuclei. As a consequence, many of the changes reported at the cortex and thalamus may be due to the changes occurring at this first synapse in the somatosensory pathway.

The electronic structure of La 2 CuO 4 has been studied by first-principles cluster calculations before and after doping. Clusters containing up to five planar copper atoms were investigated using the density functional method. At variance with band-structure calculations, we have been able to determine the charge and spin distributions from molecular orbitals expressed as linear combinations of atomic orbitals localised at the nuclear sites. Doping is achieved by subtracting an electron from the cluster which, although there is a change of spin state, produces a charge distribution which is remarkably similar to the charge distribution of the peripheral charge method which does not involve changes in spin state. The peripheral charge method is designed to simulate doping by placing a carefully chosen set of point charges beyond the periphery of the cluster and relies on the supposition that the hole distribution is closely related to the charge distribution. More importantly the peripheral charge method enables charge distribution changes to be obtained for fractional changes in doping. The results show that with fixed nuclear positions, doping not only depopulates the 2pσ orbitals but also affects other orbitals. This redistribution of charges influences the electric field gradients and hyperfine coupling parameters. The theoretical values for the field gradients are compared to values derived from experiments.

Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions generate a powerful electromagnetic field that produces photonuclear reactions. These processes have been extensively studied in ultraperipheral collisions, in which the impact parameter is larger than twice the nuclear radius. Recently, coherent photoproduction of J/ψ has been observed in nucleus–nucleus (A–A) collisions with nuclear overlap, based on the measurement of an excess of production with respect to hadron-production expectations in the very low transverse momentum (pT). Such quarkonium measurements provide valuable information about the nuclear gluon distribution at low Bjorken x and high energy. In addition, they can constrain the theory describing photon-induced reactions in A–A collisions with nuclear overlap, including possible interactions of the measured probes with the formed and fast expanding Quark-Gluon Plasma. In order to confirm the photoproduction origin of the very low pT J/ψ yield excess, polarization measurements represent a suitable observable. It is expected that the produced quarkonium inherits the polarization of the incoming photon because of the s-channel helicity conservation. ALICE can measure inclusive and exclusive quarkonium production down to pT = 0, at forward rapidity (2.5 &lt; y &lt; 4) and midrapidity (|y| &lt; 0.9). In this contribution, new preliminary measurement of the y-differential cross section and the first new polarization analysis at the LHC of coherently photoproduced J/ψ in peripheral Pb–Pb collisions will be presented. These measurements are conducted at forward rapidity in the dimuon decay channel. These results will be discussed together with the recent results on coherent photoproduction as a function of centrality at both mid and forward rapidities. Comparison with models will be shown whenever available.

The phase transition between nuclear matter and quark matter is examined. The relativistic mean field theory (RMF) is considered with interacting nucleons and mesons using TM1 parameter set for the nuclear matter equations of state. It is found that the transition point depends on coupling constant αs and bag pressure. From the study of the structure of a hybrid neutron star, it is observed that the star contains quark matter in the interior and neutron matter on the outer periphery.

The article presents a comprehensive description of the semantic field ‟Power” in the novel by the well-known Russian prose writer of the 2nd half of the 20th century, Vladimir Yemelyanovich Maksimov. The purpose of the study is to identify the structural and semantic features of the field, the communicative and pragmatic properties of its nuclear components, which are semantic dominants of the text and actively participate in organising the artistic narrative, depicting characters and events, and explicating the conceptual content of the study. An analytical review of the main linguistic studies devoted to the study of the phenomenon of authority in Russian culture and linguistic consciousness, and the scientific description of semantic fields in the system of language and speech is carried out. Modelling the field structure of the novel is based on the principles of discourse analysis of the text, and it is determined by the specifics of the writer’s linguistic personality, the individual originality of the artistic picture of the world, the genre-stylistic and plot-compositional features of the work, and the linguacultural situation of the depicted era. The component composition of the field, its core, centre and periphery, and microfields are consistently characterised. Semantic connections and intersections of field components are determined with contextual conditionality of additional meanings revealed. The semantic field ‟authority” combines four microfields: the central part of the field structure includes the microfields ‟state authority” and ‟God power”, the peripheral zone includes the microfields ‟family authority” and ‟authority and power of natural elements”. The core of the field includes the key lexemes of authority, power and the leader. The semantic dominants of the text, being components of the analysed field structure, contribute to the development of action in space and time, create narrative polyphony, reflect the author’s position, and convey the bright features of the writer’s linguistic personality.

The vocative function of an address being the basic one is supplemented and modified by a number of other functions actualized in communication, i.e. the phatic one (establishing and developing the contact with the addressee), the status one (reflecting the status responsibility of the communicants), the emotional and attitudinal one (characterizing the addressee and the attitude of the speaker towards the uttered information). Such modification explains the polyfunctional character of the address in communication. All units of address, just like the components of the addressing functional field, are polysemantic and polysemy comprises every type of an address. According to the communicative tasks the following functions can be stated within the vocative one: nominative (naming the addressee), deixis (identifying the addressee), vocative proper (attracting the addressee’s attention). The field model of addresses’ semantic structures allows to research standard and nonstandard vocatives. The standard addresses form the nucleus of the semantic field under research and characterize stability of their application in one of the above-mentioned functions. Nonstandard vocative lexemes (1 % of the total amount of the experimental material) can play the role of an address under certain circumstances. They form semantically heterogeneous (conditioned by a situation) group, located in the periphery area of the semantic field of addresses. The addresses that include anthroponyms form the most widely used group (64,5 % in Ukrainian and 68,1 % in French), the second place belongs to the addresses with appellatives (34,6 % and 29,9 %, correspondingly). As to the composition of appellatives in the status and role addresses they comprise 36,4 % in Ukrainian and 34,9 % in French. Attitudinal addresses reach 63 % and 65,1 %, correspondingly.
