Streszczenie:
The Swiss mathematician Johann Heinrich Rahn studied under John Pell in Zurich in the 1650s. Prompted by Pell (who worked on a revised version of Rahn's treatise on algebra, which was published in London in 1668), Theodore Haak made contact with Rahn in 1671, and received a letter from him describing his recent work on optics. This letter was passed on to Henry Oldenburg, who, with the assistance of John Collins, composed a lengthy reply, surveying recent scientific and mathematical publications. Significantly, however, Oldenburg did not consult Pell, even though this correspondence arose in the first place from Pell's friendship with Rahn; the reason for this omission was that Oldenburg and Collins hoped that Rahn could supply details of Pell's mathematical methods that Pell himself was refusing to divulge. Oldenburg's letter is published here for the first time.

Streszczenie:
Based on researches of Baiyao (1995) and Zhang and Xu (2001), this paper proposes an improved 2D MT Zohdy-Oldenburg direct inversion method, in the least-square sense, embodying the features of Zohdy’s ratio method and Oldenburg’s difference method, in the condition of rugged topography, with phase information. It bypasses large calculations of the Jacobian matrix and large sparse linear systems of equations and enables direct modifications and comparisons of the model parameters. According to the calculation and analysis of examples, it shows faster convergence and higher precision. In contrast with the conventional linear inversion, the calculation speed of this new method can be increased by more than 10 times.

Oldenburg (1974) presented an iterative inversion procedure based on (a rearrangement of) Parker’s (1973) formula for rapid calculation of the gravity anomaly caused by an uneven layer; the algorithm proved effective in practice (Sprenke and Kanasewich, 1982). Nevertheless, Oldenburg stated that straightforward application of the iterative procedure usually results in a divergent solution characterized by high‐frequency oscillations. Only in special cases (when the gravity anomaly can be accounted for by a layer with sufficiently small relief) is convergence obtained. However, Oldenburg did obtain convergence after suitable low‐pass filtering of the gravity anomaly. A criterion is derived to assure convergence of the iterative procedure. This criterion is concerned with the high‐frequency content of the layer’s topography and explains the results Oldenburg found empirically.

Kurzfassung Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, inwieweit die Fördermöglichkeiten der Europäischen Union den Kommunen erweiterte Gestaltungsspielräume eröffnen. Untersucht wurde dies am Beispiel der nordwestniedersächsischen Stadt Oldenburg. Gegenstand der Untersuchungen war eine Bestandsaufnahme aller EU-Projekte in der Stadt Oldenburg in den Jahren 1997–2002 und eine qualitative Analyse von sieben ausgewählten EU-Projekten. Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass ein kommunales Bemühen um EU-Fördermittel durchaus lohnenwert ist. Viele EU-Projekte in Oldenburg zielen auf typische kommunale Politik- und Handlungsfelder wie Stadtentwicklung, Wirtschaftsförderung, Integration oder Qualifizierung. Ein effektives kommunales EU-Engagement erfordert aber auch ein qualifiziertes und differenziertes Beratungsangebot.

The article is devoted to the study of the accounts of the Diary written by the Russian academician S. F. Oldenburg who was the head of the First Russian Turkestan expedition organized in East Turkistan in 1909-1910. S. F. Oldenburg’s records have not been studied enough, though they were used by few scholars earlier, one of them being N. V. Diakonova. The full text of the Diary was prepared to publication by М. D. Bukharin, the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the author of this article in 2018 in Moscow. Despite the fact that the goal of the First Russian Turkestan expedition was to study ancient archeological sites in East Turkistan and collect manuscripts in ancient languages of East Turkistan, members of the expedition recorded valuable information on modern time and everyday life of the local population, accounts on social and economic relations in the region. The article includes preliminary analysis of the accounts of the Diary of S. F. Oldenburg and describes it as a valuable source for the study of history and culture of the Uigurs and their historical homeland – East Turkistan. The article focuses mainly on materials of the scholar relating to customs, traditions of the Uigurs, sacred Muslim sites (mazars) and folk songs (qoshaq).

в статье проанализирована деятельность работников избы-читальни («избачей») в период культурной революции в России. Деятельность избы-читальни как инструмента культурной политики рассмотрена в трех аспектах: как объект управленческой деятельности, как конструктивистский проект и как реальная жизненная практика. Феномен данного учреждения культуры получил в тексте статьи новое прочтение в рамках модели государства-архитектора Г. Шартрана и концепции «третьего места» Р. Ольденбурга как особого типа социокультурного пространства. the article analyzes the activities of hut-reading room workers (“izbatch”) during the cultural revolution in Russia. The activity of the hut-reading room as an instrument of cultural policy is considered in three aspects: as an object of managerial activity, as a constructivist project, and as a real-life practice. The phenomenon of this cultural institution received a new reading in the text within the framework of the architect model by H. Chartrand and the concept of “third place” by R. Oldenburg as a special type of sociocultural space.

In the Middle Ages a chain suspended between two towers defended the entrance of Kyrenia’s little harbour, like the chain across the Golden Horn in Constantinople. William de Oldenburg, who visited Cyprus in 1211 during the reign of King Hugh I, referred to Kyrenia as “a small town well-fortified, which has a castle with walls and towers”. He perceived the chain tower as part of Kyrenia’s fortification system in that time. The Byzantines had already fortified the city, but in the thirteenth century, during the Longobard war, before the siege of the city, Frederick II’s party, under the direction of Captain Philippo Genardo, improved the defences of the city. The chain tower is still visible today in the north side of the old Kyrenia harbour. It consists of an 8,15 m diameter cylindrical tower and a 1,5 m diameter pillar on top of it. The tower was supporting a chain attached on the other side to another structure. The fortifications on the north side terminated against the harbour in a square tower or bastion holding the chain to be raised and lowered by means of a windlass. The paper includes the digital photogrammetric survey of the chain tower using a structure from motion software, the historical research and the comparison with other coeval harbour defence constructions of the eastern Mediterranean.

Abstract The demand of affordable, renewable electric energy is still increasing. Wind energy is seen as one of the most promising resources for future electric energy supply. To reduce the cost of wind energy the dimensions of wind energy turbines are still increasing. This leads to higher power output due to the larger rotor diameters, but also due to the higher wind speeds above the boundary layer. This increase in rotor diameter is achieved at the expense of much higher structural loads especially in the rotor blade root. These loads consist of bending moments, that are mainly caused by gravity, wind shear, gusts and the tower influence to the blade. A reduction of these root bending moments would allow a further increase of the rotor diameter, a longer lifetime or a lighter design and therefore be advantageous for the turbine. Load reduction can be achieved by using a trailing edge flap at the outer region of the blade, comparable to control surfaces of aircraft. This trailing edge is capable of moving several times per blade revolution and allows the manipulation of the flow to alleviate changes in the aerodynamic loading. In contrast to aircraft, sealing against environmental media, such as rain, dust, insects and so on is much more important to allow a high lifetime and low maintenance effort. Therefore, a flexible and gapless morphing trailing edge has been designed within the SmartBlades projects at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for the mentioned purpose. Based on this design, a demonstrator was built, which was tested in a wind tunnel and on a rotational test site for its performance. The paper will present the approach beginning with some design and modeling considerations of the flexible trailing edge and the demonstrator, which was used for testing. Main focus of the paper is the presentation of results obtained from a wind tunnel experiment at Oldenburg University and the rotational experiment at the field research site of the Technical University in Denmark (DTU). In these experiments, the effectiveness of the trailing edge flap could be demonstrated in the wind tunnel as well as in free field. Based on pressure taps and force sensors, the change in the lift of the airfoil due to the deflection of the flexible trailing edge was measured and the resulting polars are shown in this paper. Furthermore, the result of different simple control strategies for the trailing edge in terms of load reduction at the rotating test rig will be presented.

Advances in nanotechnology are expected to lead to the development of new and improved therapeutic strategies, amenable to targeting, that may ultimately revolutionize cancer treatment. For example, we have developed a nanoparticle-based photothermal cancer therapy that has shown high efficacy with virtually no damage to normal tissues (Hirsch et al., 2003, O’Neal et al., 2004, Lowery et al., 2006). This therapeutic strategy employs nanoparticles called nanoshells that are designed to strongly absorb near infrared (NIR) light. Metal nanoshells are a new type of nanoparticle composed of a dielectric (for instance, silica) core coated with an ultrathin metallic (for instance, gold) layer. Gold nanoshells possess physical properties similar to gold colloid, in particular, a strong optical absorption due to the collective electronic response of the metal to light. The optical absorption of gold colloid yields a brilliant red color that has been of considerable utility in consumer-related medical products, such as home pregnancy tests. In contrast, the optical response of gold nanoshells depends dramatically on the relative size of the nanoparticle core and the thickness of the gold shell. By varying the relative core and shell thicknesses, the color of gold nanoshells can be varied across a broad range of the optical spectrum that spans the visible and the near infrared spectral regions (Oldenburg et al., 1999). Gold nanoshells can be made to either preferentially absorb or scatter light at their plasmon resonance by varying the size of the particle relative to the wavelength of the light at their optical resonance. For cancer therapy, nanoshells are injected intravenously and allowed to accumulate in tumor sites due to the leakiness of the vasculature (EPR) and/or molecular targeting. Accumulation in the tumor sites peaks after several hours, at which time the tissue region is illuminated with NIR light for several minutes. NIR light is not absorbed to a significant extent by tissue components, but is strongly absorbed by nanoshells within the tumor. This leads to rapid heating of the tumor tissue without damage to adjacent normal tissues. In preliminary studies, complete tumor regression and 100% survival with no regrowth has been achieved. Mice with CT26 colon carcinoma tumors (4 mm diameter) were injected intravenously with NIR absorbing nanoshells that were coated with PEG-SH. 6 hr following nanoshell injection, the tumor sites were illuminated with light from a 820 nm diode laser (4 W/cm2) for 4 min. Animals in a sham group received a saline injection instead of nanoshells prior to NIR treatment, while a control group was untreated. Tumor size and animal survival were then tracked. As shown in Figure 1, all tumors treated with nanoshells had completely regressed within 10 days of treatment, while sham and control tumors had grown dramatically. Furthermore, all sham and control animals died within 20 days of treatment, while all nanoshell-treated mice continue to live (+12 months) with no tumor regrowth (Figure 2, O’Neal et al., 2004). Excellent nanoshell biocompatibility has been observed.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.
