I studied the effect of two abundant omnivores, grass shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosas) and eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), on periphyton biomass of the Florida Everglades. Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus are native to tributaries of the Mississippi River but are now invasive in several Atlantic slope drainages. This includes subestuaries of the Chesapeake Bay, where their feeding ecology and potential impact on native species was largely unknown. The thesis examines the dynamics of intraguild predation models incorporating adaptive behaviour. The top predator varies its relative consumption of the intermediate consumer and the basal resource. The consumer alters its activity level in response to the threat of predation.
