Pełny tekst źródłaMany women with type 2 diabetes fail in their efforts with self care management. The consequence are medical complications. The purpose of this paper is to look at a number of research articles describing women’s experiences relating to their diabetes diagnosis. These experiences affect the woman's ability to self care but also guides the nurse in her profession on how to best support the woman. Orem's self care deficit theory is tied to the diabetic woman and her self care but also to the role of the nurse. There is also an analysis of the sampling methods used in each of the articles. This study was done as a descriptive litterature study based on ten qualitative research articles. The result from the analysis of the articles shows that the experiences of the diabetic women can be sorted into five categories. 1. Self-care and lifestyle change 2. Coping with ones own feelings and emotions 3. Motivation and engagement 4. The surrounding support 5. The interaction with the caregiver/medical expertise. The conclusion that can be made from this study is that women with type 2 diabetes have a lot of emotional experiences relating to the diagnosis that affects their self care management. The analysis of the sampling methods used in each of the articles show that it is critical for the result how the sampling was done and care should be exercised before drawing any conclusions from the results.

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a welfare disorder in which the number of people with the disease is increasing in the world. An important part of the treatment is self-care where the person with the diabetes disease has a great responsibility. The nurse has a responsibility to provide the person with information and knowledge about the illness for the person to be able to perform self-care. Aim: To describe the experience of self-care in people with diabetes mellitus type 2. Method: A qualitative literature review with a compilation of 13 scientific articles. The analysis followed Friberg's five-step analysis. Results: The two main themes developed in the literature review's results: "Means lifestyle changes" and "Significant with support". Difficulties that arose in self-care were changing dietary habits, physical activity and changing daily routines. The result showed that self-care has some challenges in which support from the environment and health care personnel can facilitate how self-care was experienced. Conclusion: Managing self-care meant changing living habits where adaptation to the new life went very fast. Support from the environment and health care played a major role in how self-care worked and was experienced.

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a growing health care concern, in Sweden and globally. The implementation of self-care is a significant part to avoid complications and live a long and healthy life. Aim: To describe people’s experiences of performing self-care in diabetes mellitus type 2. Methods: A qualitative literature review was conducted in which 16 articles were analysed and used for the result. An inductive approach has been used. The analysis was conducted in five steps according to Friberg. Results: The analysis resulted in two themes: “Changed lifestyle” and “Need for support and information”. Changes regarding diet and physical activity entailed readjustment in the everyday life. Dietary changes were found as a barrier to the social life. Support from both health care, family and friends was meaningful. The information that was provided affected the execution of self-care. Conclusion: The management of self-care involved various extent of lifestyle changes. The most difficult to implement in the daily life was dietary changes. Information and support from surroundings and health care facilitated the implementation of self-care. The literature review may be used as support for health care professionals to achieve more insight in people’s experiences.

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which affects more and more people around the world. Studies have shown a close relationship between lifestyle and diabetes type 2 and the importance of having a good self-care treatment to reduce the risk of complications. The diabetes nurse has an important responsibility to work with both health promotion and disease prevention through guidance in self-care. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the diabetes nurse’s experiences of guiding people with diabetes in self-care. Method: 16 semi-structured interviews was performed during January – March 2016 with diabetes nurses who worked in primary care. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. Result: The content analysis resulted in three categories; the ground for commitment, Knowledge transfer and Organizational conditions. The four main results in the study was: The diabetes nurse’s possibilities to create participation, knowledge that both the diabetes nurse and the person possessed, group educations health promoting impacts and the team’s impact on guidance. Conclusion: The result highlights that guidance in self-care should be built on knowledge and lead to a higher level of engagement. A well-functioning communication is crucial to achieve common goals and that the team around the person with diabetes is working together towards the same goal.

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Bipolar disorder causes a great deal of suffering for the individual with recurrent depression or hypomania/mania. Nursing that supports the individual to actively pursue selfcare can strengthen the individual to become more independent and active in the treatment of bipolar disorder. There is no systematic review of qualitative studies on individuals' experiences of performing self-care in bipolar disorder Aim: Highlight individuals' experiences of conducting self-care related to bipolar disorder. Method: The qualitative method of meta-ethnography was used in the study. Searching databases resulted in 22 qualitative articles. Synthesizing the articles resulted in three metaphors with a model of how the metaphors are interconnected Results: The study's results consist of the metaphors "Self-care as a balancing act", "Health care's offering of a balancing stick" and "Risks for falls of the line". Conclusion: The three metaphors of the result together create a metaphorical model that shows that self-care in bipolar disorder can be seen as the individual having to "balance on a line" so as not to "fall off the line" in depression or mania. The metaphorical model illustrates that self-care in bipolar disorder is a complex phenomenon that goes beyond self-care. The specialist nurse in psychiatry should actively encourage individuals with bipolar disorder to actively pursue self-care to strengthen their independence and to provide an increased opportunity to grant improved health and well-being. The study's results are strengthened by the fact that it is theoretically linked to Orem's self-care theory.

Pełny tekst źródłaConsidering the Orem Theory as a subject of nursing studies, it is posed a question on authors have usedit and applied to nursing care practices, research. It is a descriptive research through systematic review was designed aiming to analyse brazilian publications that used Orem Self-care Theory. In order to investigate the evidences of this appropriation, publications were assessed, available in Cochrane, Bireme and PeriEnf data bases. The systematic review included 75 nursing research published from 1985 to 2006. The publication assessment was based on quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative one was used to analyse variables related to authors and articles characteristics. It was found that studies about Orem Theory were published more recently on Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem and became intensified after 2000, with an average of two years and six months (DP-1,48) between the making of the study and its publication. The majority of the studies comes from the southeast region (45,5%), and northeast (32,5%), with an emphasis to São Paulo and Ceará states. Among the keywords used by the authors, it is important to highlight the frequency (n=47) for self-care. Only 21% of the thesis, monographs and dissertations original production were identified. Concerning the authorship, the majority are nurses (84,3%) and professor of nursing lectures (70,7%). Concerning the research design: qualitative (58,4%), quantitative (31,2%), and quantitative/qualitative (10,4%). The predominance indicated studies with adults (50,6%), in the clinic scenario (50,6%), associated to patology (63,2%), being distinguishable the studies related to patients self-care with diabetes mellitus (33,3%). The analysis for categorization was applied in order to assess the ways of Orem Theory application, being possible to delimitate three thematic categories which reflect the following appropriation: the use of the theory in the systematization of nursing attendance, applying of the nurse clinical judgement concerning the development of self-care and application as theoretical reference. Considering the evaluation criteria to identify such appropriation, it was confirmmed that the articles revealing more appropriation concerning the Orem Theory were the ones that applied it in the nursing process (44,1%), for they used the three theoretical constructs. Next, the articles revealing clients context analysis to determine strategies to be taken (36,4%), and the articles that use the concept of self-care as a reference to discussions and reflections about caring (19,5%). In conclusion, the ways that Orem Theory appropriation are present in the application of the self-care concept are as a reference towards practice and as a theoretical framework, in the assessement of self-care deficit, and in the utilization of the support-education system as a means of caring. This theoretical model constitutes a logical and systematic approach, that helps nursing in the provision and promotion of self-care to clients. By assessing the scientific communication, it was possible to outline a prodution profile concerning the self-care Orem Theory and it became clear the evidences pertaining the appropriation of such theory by the Brazilian nurses.

Pełny tekst źródłaBackground: Heart failure is a global health problem that is constantly increasing. Symptoms of heart failure affects the performance in activities of daily living and the ability to perform self-care. Proper self-care can decrease symptoms, increase self-esteem and well-being. Orem's theory Self-care deficit nursing theory was used as a theoretical framework. Aim: was to describe chronic heart failure patients experiences of daily self-care. Method: The literature review had scientific articles with a qualitative method which was analyzed by Friberg's (2017). Results: A total of 13 scientific articles were selected for the results and presented in three main categories with respective subcategories: Emotional challenges (changed emotions), Physical limitations (dyspnea & fatigue), Support through self-care (resources). Conclusion: Patients experienced that negative emotions affected their ability to perform self-care. Social support from the family had both a positive and negative impact. Conversations with various professions were valuable for patients as they gained increased knowledge about heart failure to manage their self-care. Inadequacy in healthcare staff resulted in incorrect information being communicated to patients with heart failure and causing inefficient self-care.
