Surface water degradation is increasingly becoming a national issue in Nigeria as it affects the suitability of water for its various uses. The preliminary study of the physicochemical parameters and water quality index of the Orogodo River was conducted to ascertain the extent of degradation from multiple sources of contamination. Water samples were collected from four sites that were impacted by various anthropogenic activities along the Orogodo River in Delta State during the months of February (number of samples = 16) and September (number of samples = 16) 2020. The water samples were anal

Abstract The study aimed at assessing the levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) concentration in Orogodo River Sediments at Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria. Sixteen sediment samples at different sample point were collected and analyzed; obtained concentrations were compared with exiting standards. Sediment samples were extracted using a mixture of hexane and acetone (1:1), sonicated in an ultrasonic bath (15 min) and placed on a shaker for two hours. Chromatographic analysis was done after solvent exchange, was carried out on the final extract using n-hexane (1000 μl) and injected (1 μl) into

Parasites are ubiquitous and fish are host to some of these parasites that can be zoonotic. Assessing their status and trends is vital in public health safety, and aquatic ecology. The study aimed to identify parasites, assess the prevalence, identify the infection sites and also determine the variation in infection among sexes in fish from River Orogodo, Agbor, Delta State. A total of 780 fish, comprising 23 species belonging to 12 fish families were collected between September 2014 and August 2019 using cast nets of various mesh sizes and funnel entrance traps. The viable heterotrophic bacteria count for the rainy season ranges from 7.7x105-4.6x104cfu/ml. Total coliform counts 2.6x105 -3.4x104 MPN/ml respectively. A total of 11 bacteria were isolated, antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacteria was determined using the disk diffusion method. The Orogodo River is a major source of water for drinking, cooking, bathing, fishing, washing and recreation for the resident community. Apparently, anthropogenic activities threaten the sustainability of this resource, hence, the need for environmental monitoring studies. This study was carried out to investigate heavy metal content and to assess human health risk of Orogodo River vis-a-vis its suitability for human consumption. The contamination of water bodies has become a serious issue in Nigeria today, as xenobiotics entering the aquatic environment exert their effects through redox cycling. The effect of these pollutant can be assessed using malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant enzymes such as (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GXP), glutathione reductase (GR)) and metallothionein (MT) as biomarkers in fish from Banegbe River. Our results showed Significant (p < 0.05) elevations in MDA, and the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GXP, GR and MT) activities from middle-stream, down-st
