Numerical simulation of single point incremental forming process (SPIF) for Ni 201 sheet material was carried out using finite element analysis software and Taguchi experimental techniques. Reduction in thickness during SPIF process of the parabolic cups was estimated. Formability diagrams were drawn based on minor and major strains, and normalized major and minor stresses. The significant process parameters were identified using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Local thing along the walls of the parabolic cups were also estimated. It has been found that the maximum thinning ranges from 58% to 61

Abstract. Cup anemometers measure average wind speed in the atmosphere and have been used for one and a half centuries by meteorologists. Within the last half century, cup anemometers have been used extensively in wind energy to measure wind resources and performance of wind turbines. Meteorologists researched cup anemometer behaviour and found dynamic overspeeding to be an inherent and significant systematic error. The wind energy community has strong accuracy requirements for power performance measurements on wind turbines, and this led in the last 2 decades to new research on cup anemometer

AbstractThe perceived direction of up depends on both gravity and visual cues to orientation. Static visual cues to orientation have been shown to be less effective in influencing the perception of upright (PU) under microgravity conditions than they are on earth (Dyde et al., 2009). Here we introduce dynamic orientation cues into the visual background to ascertain whether they might increase the effectiveness of visual cues in defining the PU under different gravity conditions. Brief periods of microgravity and hypergravity were created using parabolic flight. Observers viewed a polarized, na

Further evidence was found for adaptive changes in the vestibular "velocity storage" (VS) component of the vestibuloocular reflex in four shuttle astronauts tested in parabolic flight and before, during, and after a 14-day mission. Nystagmus was recorded during and after 1 min of 120 degrees/s rotation. Gains and time constants were determined by computer analysis. Responses correlated with experience. Two subjects were making their first spaceflight. In parabolic flight, their time constants shortened to an average of 60% of 1 G values, presumably because unfamiliar otolith cues reduced VS. H

Previous studies established that vestibular reflexes can have two adapted states (e.g., gains) simultaneously, and that a context cue (e.g., vertical eye position) can switch between the two states. Our earlier work demonstrated this phenomenon of context-specific adaptation for saccadic eye movements: we asked for gain decrease in one context state and gain increase in another context state, and then determined if a change in the context state would invoke switching between the adapted states. Horizontal and vertical eye position and head orientation could serve, to varying degrees, as cues

The monitoring of one's own spatial orientation depends on the ability to estimate successive self-motion cues accurately. This process has become to be known as path integration. A feature of sequential cue estimation, in general, is that the history of previously experienced stimuli, or priors, biases perception. Here, we investigate how during angular path integration, the prior imparted by the displacement path dynamics affects the translation of vestibular sensations into perceptual estimates. Subjects received successive whole-body yaw rotations and were instructed to report their positi

Illusions of body inversion and of vehicle inversion can be evoked by exposure to weightlessness in the microgravity conditions of orbital and parabolic flight. Such illusions can involve all possible combinations of self-inversion and vehicle inversion. In the absence of any patterns of external stimulation, individuals may lose all sense of body orientation to their surroundings while retaining a sense of their overall body configuration and cognitive awareness of their actual position. Some observers take a long time to see the appropriate surface shapes depicted in complex random-dot stereograms (RDSs) whereas others report seeing them quickly. We have hypothesised that this may be due in part to some observers being more affected than others by the cue conflicts that are typically present in RDSs, for which disparity is often at odds with accommodation, texture, and outline shape cues. We report two experiments in which we investigated whether a measure of dominance of texture/outline cues over disparity cues in stereograms of ridges could predict latencies to see RDSs of

Most of the real world problems are complex that is raised from uncertainity in the form of ambiguity. To overcome the ambiguity and impreciseness, Zadeh [20] introduced fuzzy set theory in the year 1965. The underlying power of fuzzy sets is that linguistic variables can be used rather than quantitative variables to represent imprecise concepts which are continuous transitions. The continuous imprecise concepts need to be modeled by continuous fuzzy numbers instead of intervals and real numbers. Many researchers applied triangular and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers which are piecewise linear and c

Abstract In his seminal paper [5] H. Maass extended the ghetto of classical cusp forms by automorphic forms which a.re not holomorphic but, instead, are eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator Δ. For a group with parabolic elements those Maass forms which decay exponentially to zero at every cusp are called cusp forms. The Maass cusp forms remain wrapped in a shroud of mystery; it is not even known today whether they exist for a generic group. However, for any congruence group the spectral resolution of abounds with Maass cusp forms. This is shown by a counting argument using Selberg’s trace fo

Abstract Several QMC calculations had earlier treated quantum dots of various shapes and sizes by either variational or diffusion methods. This study extended much farther, with ground and low-lying excited states for circular two-dimensional dots with 2 to 13 electrons. The method was fixed-node diffusion QMC with importance sampling. Comparisons were made with Hartree-Fock and density functional calculations at the LSDA level. The system treated was a standard circular quantum dot with N electrons confined in two dimensions by a parabolic potential V = ½kr2 centered at the origin. The masses

Catastrophic bearing failure is a major concern for the railroad industry because it can lead to costly train stoppages and even derailments. Excessive heat buildup within the bearing is one of the main factors that can warn of impending failure. A question is often raised regarding the transfer of heat from a wheel during braking and whether this can lead to false setouts. Therefore, this work was motivated by the need to understand and quantify the heat transfer paths to the tapered roller bearing within the railroad wheel assembly when wheel heating occurs.
