Abstract This article argues that Joseph Blankholm’s concept of paradox needs to be applied more widely in the historical study of religious/secular relations. Blankholm’s study is useful but illuminates only a moment in the history of the secular (one representing a society where the expression of choice is encouraged by the absence of state religion). Examining the struggle between unbelievers and Christianity in 1880s/1890s Britain illuminates an entirely different moment in which a ‘Christian paradox’ is created by secular critics, commentators upon contemporary Christianity and by Christi

AbstractPentecostal-Charismatic Christianity (P/C) is one of the fastest-growing religions worldwide. Some scholars connect P/C’s success with broad processes of globalization. Others try to unravel more personal dynamics of conversion. This article seeks to understand both global forces and local cultural reasons to believe. It focuses first on the remarkable paradox that explains the movement’s popularity among African-Surinamese (Caribbean) believers: what appears as P/C’s rejection of their traditional religious system turns out to be a reinterpretation of beliefs and practices. AbstractExamining the “digital” as a challenge to one of the most traditional spheres of private and public life of Russians, the chapter is focused on institutional aspects of the religion digitalization in the theoretical frame of mediatization. Normatively, digitalization as such does not contradict the dogmatic teaching of any traditional for Russia religion, in Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Buddhism theologically it is being considered as a neutral process with good or bad consequences depending on human will. Therefore, functionally digital technologies are seen by religious institutions as a shaping force, one more facility (channel, tool, space, network) for effective preaching while the core of religious practices still remains based on non-mediated interpersonal communication.

Abstract To better understand the religious transformation which resulted from the encounter of the Germanic peoples with Christianity, it is useful to be come familiar with other instances of pre-Christian and non-Christian religious transformation, particularly those in which a folk-religious society encountered a universal religious movement. Of special interest is the religious transformation which occurred when the folk-religious Indo European societies of ancient Greece and Rome encountered “proto Christian” mystery cults during the Hellenistic age. An examination of Hellenistic and Jewish religious and philosophical currents should con tribute toward the development of a general model of the interaction between folk-religious societies and universal religions, and of the religious transformation which stems from it. This model will then be applied to the encounter of the Germanic peoples with Christianity.

This chapter focuses on secular people’s ambivalence toward conversion, as well as the unique ethical challenges they face in a culture dominated by Christianity. Some secular people consider themselves to have merely deconverted from a religion, and others see their transformation in more affirmative terms, as a conversion to secularism. Secular people also disagree on whether conversion is a choice or a realization and whether it is ethical to try to deconvert religious people and get them to become secular. Nonbelievers adopt various strategies to disabuse the religious of their beliefs and to convince those who are indifferent to religion to strengthen their secular identities and “come out” as secular.

This chapter focuses on secular people’s fundamental paradox, (non)belief, and it provides an overview of the belief-centered terms they use to describe themselves. Some secular people refuse to be called “nonbelievers” because they insist they have beliefs; others resist the language of “belief” because it is too religious. Both are right. Nonbelievers share with one another ideas about what is real and the best way to know reality, and their assertions differ from those of most religious people. They draw from a constellation of overlapping labels to emphasize the negative or positive aspects of their ambiguous identities. The secular paradox fuels disputes among nonbelievers over what to call themselves, which impede their ability to make themselves fully legible in American life.

This chapter argues that secular people are part of a tradition that is thousands of years old. Some secular people, especially humanists, have embraced the idea that they participate in a tradition, but they have imagined it narrowly. A broader conception of the secular tradition includes much of critical theory and Continental philosophy and attends to how the secular has interwoven with Christianity, Judaism, and other traditions. Adopting a genealogical approach demonstrates that the secular is a discursive tradition, which includes embodied practices in addition to institutions and ideas. Because the secular discursive tradition is too religion-like, the secular paradox conceals it. Locating secular people in a tradition renders their truth contingent, but it also gives them a place in the pantheon of religious pluralism.

This chapter assesses The Chronicle of Morea, which contains some of the most intriguing aspects of the colonial encounter of the Fourth Crusade. The Chronicles of Morea provides a series of discursive juxtapositions between the Franks and the Greeks. Although it has a very complicated textual history, The Chronicles of Morea tells the multigenerational story of the Frankish Villehardouin dynasty, which ruled the Peloponnese in the centuries after the conquest of 1204. This text reveals not only the way that colonizer and colonized eventually came to work alongside one another but also the way that the prolonged encounter between Greeks and Franks transformed the means by which both understood their sense of identity and religious commitments. It is precisely because of these aspects of this text that the insights of postcolonial analysis help one to understand the many complexities that they convey.

Settler colonialism was imbued with intolerance towards Indigenous peoples. In colonial North America brutal military force was applied to the subjection and conversion of Native Americans to Christianity. In the United States, that offense continued, joined with condemnations of Indian religious practice as savagery, or as no religion at all. The violence was legitimated by appeals to Christian scripture in which genocide was commanded by God. Forced conversion to Christianity and the outlawing of Native religious practices were central aspects of white intolerance.
